Ubuntu :: Error - Getting Completely Black Server With Cursor

After a ssh remote login and trying to start my vncserver, I cant login any more on my ubuntu 10.04. During this session I have executed some command with "xterm" and "display:0" and I suspect that is causing my problem now: At startup I have an error message in a window, with following message "running in low-graphics mode" and other phrase with something about my keyboard. Then I have some choises, like Start in low graphics or normal mode, and some more, but nothing seems to works and all I get is a 100% black screen with cursor, no ubuntu, and I must reboot PC in XP to come here...
Although I managed fairly quickly to get 3D enabled on the GF 7600GS of my desktop, it took me longer to get 3D up on the GF 9650M GT of my Asus laptop M70Vn. Although I made extensive use of the numerous procedures outlined here, none of them worked and booting my laptop always ended up with me facing a jet-black screen and a completely inexpressive blinking white cursor. My solution was simple: I did not blacklist Nouveau and problems mysteriously disappeared.
I was going to set up an ubuntu server, but ran into some issues. When I try to install ubuntu server 9.10, it immediately goes to a black screen with a blinking cursor as soon as I press enter on the menu. I've tried pressing F6 and editing options - noapic, nolapic, irqpoll, vga=[something...] and nothing worked. I then downloaded a standard ubuntu desktop cd, and the livecd works, and I can successfully start the install!
I've heard that I should probably use the server install if I want to use this as a server (which I do; webserver for a group of people, website, ftp, ssh.) I've also heard that it's possible to just install everything needed overtop of an ubuntu desktop base. What should I do? Are there other things I should try to make the server install work? Or is it not worth the effort, and I should just go with a desktop install and then work from there? tasksel? (It's a Dell XPS, the graphics card is NVIDIA Geforce 9800 GT).
I turned on my Acer laptop and during bootup it seemed normal. After it passed the blue Acer logo, all I could see is a black screen and a black cursor outlined in white in the shape of an X. Thinking it would be a one time thing, I turned it off again.it still was a black screen.
Can't quite figure this out. My GDM is showing up with no theme whatsoever. It has a completely black background, boxy buttons, and ugly fonts. I can change it by going to tty1 and using Code: sudo -u gdm gnome-control-center
I was playing Minecraft last night when the screen went black. This is apparently a known issue when you're using the wrong java version or something, and I've gotten this crash in the past, but I've always just restarted to get my computer back to normal. However, when I restarted my computer, the monitors would not get any signal from the computer. They just stay black. I tried restarting, shutting down all the way and turning it back on, and nothing works. The computer just stays completely black.
I tried turning on the computer then SSHing into it, but it's not working. I'm not sure if I had it set to auto log in, so it might be that I'm not logged in, or it might be something more insidious, but as I can't see what's happening I don't know what the problem could be.
I have a problem with images showing up as black boxes in konqueror, firefox, galeon, etc. I originally thought the problem was Firefox related, so I updated and the problem is still there.
I can't find anything with search that matched this exactly, so if I overlooked.
It seems to me that any time an image is re-sized it shows up as a black box. If I look at a wallpaper that's large, say 1200 x 800 or something, and the browser tries to resize it, it comes up black. However, if I click the same image and it returns to it's actual size, it looks perfect, as it should.
I look at a website I have to individually view each image and this is beginning to drive me crazy!
I have an Acer 5515 Laptop, with a ATI Express X1200 graphics card. I have taken a snapshot of when it happens.
Just did a fresh Ubuntu 10.10 (minimal) install on my Asus EEE PC 1001PX.Before the minimal install I had Ubuntu Netbook Edition 10.10 which worked flawlessly, now all I get is a black screen with a blinking cursor:for the amazing quality, but I guess it's better than nothing.ctrl+alt+Fx does nothing, ctrl+alt+del reboots the computer.Booting with the usb-stick that was used for the install takes me to the login...
I have just wiped my whole hard drive to install a fresh copy of Ubuntu on it, and now as soon as i power it up it passes the POST screen and black screen shows up with a flashing cursor. I bliv it should say no operating system and pick the USB which has Ubuntu installation on it.I have formated the hard drive to NTFS, the system is Samsung NC10.
A few weeks ago I installed Ubuntu 10.4 beta on a pc. I upgraded it to 10.4 RC and 10.4 final release. I think it was after upgrading to 10.4RC that I started having a problem during startup. Here is what happens: I turn the pc on the bootstrap process occurres, then the grub screen comes up I let ubuntu boot. For a few seconds I get a black screen with a blinking cursor. The Ubuntu splash screen flashes on the screen for maybe a second or two. Then I'm dumped to the command prompt on TTY1.
At this point I can log in with a username and password type startx and I'm at the ubuntu desktop. If I log off I'm back at the command prompt on TTY1. If I press alt-ctrl-F7 at the command prompt this is what I see, these are the last four lines of text: init: ureadahead-other main process (742) terminated with status 4
I now installed recordmydesktop via ubuntu software center ,and when I record my desktop I have black video with cursor on export. I have installed graphic driver , cairo-dock , google-widgets , compiz And I have now problem when I need to take Screenshot I have a black picture with curosor on export am ubuntu 10.04 user.
I have an intel atom board (D410PT) and I can run livecds, liveusbs and even boot a grub4dos stick without issue, but install any 10.4 ubuntu variant and all I get is a black flashing cursor.It appears as if there is a grub2 incompatibility with this board, which is currently preventing me running a full ubuntu on it.I tried struggling on with a liveusb system with a rw partition but it's just not feasable for a home server as the lack of swap just bogs the machine down all the time.Grub-legacy no longer appears to be in the repos and neither does lilo (yeah, I really am that old-school that I could cope with lilo if necessary).What can be done about a system that doesn't like grub2? (syslinux is fine, but requires fat32, grub4dos works but doesn't like ext3/4, isolinux works but I don't want livecd, I want full install!)
I have windows 7 + Ubuntu 10.04 in dual boot, I noticed that sometimes the ubuntu was not booting.
Right after I select the os in grub (ubuntu) the screen goes black with the blink cursor and nothing happens, that's all no messages it's stuck there forever.
Today, it does this every time I try to enter Ubuntu, it's just stuck there.
just did a dual boot install on a brand new DEll T1500. The machine has win7 on it. I booted off the live CD and all looked well. Installation went well. When I reboot, I get grub, select the top linux option and then see a small black blinking cursor for a few seconds, then nothing. The screen reports no signal.
I have installed Maverick onto an INTENSO 320GB USB Hard Disk. I can boot from GRUB, but only get a dark grey screen, with no cursor. I have tried editing the boot script, removing "quiet & splash" and putting in "nomodeset". I have also tried "i915.modeset=1" and "i915.modeset=0". Also "xforcevesa" and "nouveau.modeset=0". None have worked. I have not been able to reach a console screen to log in. Here are the specifications of the machine:

Are the number of spaces between "ro" and "quiet and splash" essential? There are three spaces on the boot script and I have left them there. Ubuntu works fine as a live CD, and I experienced no problems with the installation.
I am trying to do a dual boot of XP and ubuntu. I have 3 hard drives and I plan to put ubuntu on one of them. I have created a DVD from the ISO for 10.10 using programs and methods recommended by ubuntu, and it burned correctly onto the DVD. When I boot with the dvd in the tray the computer says something about linux iso then the screen goes black with a Human=Keyboard symbol at the bottom for a few seconds. Then my screen goes black with a blinking cursor in the top left of the screen. I have let it sit for a while and the PC shows no signs of drives working.Also if I remove it the PC automatically boots to windows.
I have a very affordable Linux Alpha 400 2.4. I need to change back to the black regular cursor. What I am getting know is a red cursor that does not let me indent and write, when I do it brings the text under this sentence along with it.
I decided to give a try to VNC server on my remote dedicated centos machine. WHAT I DID:
yum groupinstall "X window system" yum groupinstall "GNOME Desktop Environment" yum install vnc-server Followed the Centos wiki tutorial.
PROBLEM: After typing the password in my vnc viewer I get a black screen with cursor. I can move the cursor about but thats it.
SOLUTION: I have googled like crazy for the last 2 days but have not found a solution yet. My best guess is xorg.conf file, but I am quite new to linux so could be wrong.
After running for a while, often after starting a program that displays graphics, such as Shutter, Gimp, Ocular, or maybe simply having previews in Dolphin (as some of my folders default to large previews)most menus, and some windows will go completely black. Some simply grey out (only ksystemlog does this that I have noticed so far)Blindly clicking anywhere on top title bar has no effect (would expect minimize/maximize etc to work if hitAlt-leftmouse or alt-middlemouse will allow window move/resize - black actively conforms to new window size/shape.

My Keepass2 window is completely black in Gnome. Its possible to open my database and use autotype, but I cant edit anything coz its black. Everything works from KDE.
I have here two old identical compaq pc's with 64mb ram.I want to copy drive/os from one machine to other. So i do a drive to drive clone (witn both hd's deing connected to another machine). And it says its done and okay. But the second (cloned) machine doesnt boot. And have the black screen with the blinking white cursor in top left corner. I have already tried to do fdisk /mbr and also copying partition table from original to destination disk. Because i think it is logical that with a drive to drive clone it sould be copied. But i have a doubt in that somehow. Because why would it not boot if it was copied then
when I boot and login to a fresh install of Ubuntu, everything goes fine, the login screen appears, I login. Then the cursor appears on a black screen. This is normal. Then when the desktop should appear, on the very left edge of the screen, about 5 pixels in size, you can see the panel and the rest of the desktop. But I stress, You still see the cursor. In this small area, you can right click as you, even click on the menu and it will come down, you can see it. I can click on Ubuntu SC and the cursor will turn to a loading symbol. But then nothing again. I can press Ctrl + Alt + F2 and terminal will come on fine. So far, this has happened on a live CD of Maverick, A live USB of Maverick, A Natty Narwhal Fresh Install, A Maverick Fresh install, A Karmic Old Install and That same Karmic After going through a Distro upgrade via Ctrl + Alt + F2 to 11.04. I've gotten all the updates for all of them (A slow, bandwidth wasting process), and this doen't happen on other computers, even ones with lower graphics cards then mine. Additionally, on the same computer on a seperate partion, I can load my main Maverick just fine, Indicateing that it can't be a hardware problem. After searching across the internet, I'm at loss to an answer.
I am using fedora 15 on my dell studio 1558 . Sometimes a black screen appears with a cursor blinking when i tries to reduce the brightness of the laptop and somethimes it automatically happens . And i am not able to do anything its just like the blue screen of death as in windows . the only way to get back is by restarting the computer
Seems to happen with every version! I have the same problem as my last thread. Basically it was solved by removing an IPv6 line from the hosts file or adjusting the vnc configuration to use an IP and not host name. Both of these are not working for me on 11.3. I'm not seeing any errors in log/messages. It just sits there with an X cursor that moves around then times out after around a minute or so. I don't know if there are any other logs that will help.
To clarify, starting a vncserver from a terminal will work, but the 'Remote administration' vnc with the login screen will produce a fully black screen with an X cursor that updates with my mouse position.
I have a problem - after installation of Ubuntu 9.10 I discovered that I do not have virtual terminals on my computer. When I am trying to switch, to another virtual terminal with, say, Ctr-Alt-F2, I am getting a black screen with lonely cursor blinking in the upper left corner (no login prompt).my tty2.conf file is

As the topic says. I'm having problem after problem, everytime I figure out a way to take a step forward, my PC has pre-emptively taken a step back.
I'm unable to boot to X or (recovery mode).
I did try booting to a LiveUSB in order to run update-grub, but then it occured I have no idea how to do this from a LiveUSB that will affect the internal HDD installation?
So I'm currently trying to reboot from Live USB, but that just seems to have locked up the PC on the white ubuntu logo. I'm afraid to hard reset it (been doing too much of that lately). How long should a Live USB take to shutdown? (been about 10 minutes so far ). It's not a persistent LiveUSB as far as I know, and I basically just booted to the desktop and then start the reboot cycle as soon as I realised I didn't know what I wanted to do .
I dual-boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu. Sometime between 4/18 and a few days ago, something happened with Windows booting up. Ubuntu boots fine, but whenever I try to boot Windows, it just goes to a black screen with a blinking cursor (the command line kind, not a pointer). At first I thought it was Windows, but I have run the repair CD and executed chkdsk /f and chkdsk /r on all partition related to windows. No effect.
I ran a system check designed for issues with booting up, and it found no errors. I have looked at my GRUB files, and they all look fine. I am not sure if it is GRUB or Windows. I tried reinstalling the Windows boot-loader, and it had the same effect, the only difference is that it bypassed GRUB. The reason I think it may be GRUB is that the error happened around the same time as me upgrading from Karmic to the Lucid RC. I have posted this on a Windows 7 forum.
I have an Acer Aspire One AOA110 that came with Windows XP.
I created a usb flash drive install for Ubuntu 10.10 netbook edition and went through the install process (wiped disk clean, not a dual boot with WINXP).
Before install, I was able to run Ubunut from the usb key with no problems.
At the end of the install, it told me I needed to restart, so I clicked the "restart" button and the removed the usb drive. Nothing happened and it never restarted and just completley hung for about 20 minutes. I manually shut down the computer by holding the power for 10 seconds and then rebooted the machine. Now all I get after the "acer bios" screen is a black screen with a blinking cursor. If I press any buttons, the computer beeps at me.
After installing Ubuntu Server 10.04 LTS, I restarted my machine. I removed the disk, but now when it starts, it never gets to GRUB. Instead, it just takes me to a black screen with a blinking cursor. I can't type in anything and holding shift doesn't take me to GRUB.
I have rebuild my system, with an Asus motherboard M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3 with radeon 4250 integrated 8 Gb memory Athlon II 4x 640 2 x 1 TB sata3 WD Harddisks I installed 10.10 64bit, and ran through the whole install with the alternate CD without problems, Installed grub in the MBR on the 120 Gb partition for 10.10, it even recognised my 2 3ware pci raidcontroler on which 8.04 is installed.
When I start I get grub, when I choose for 10.10 I get a black screen with a cursor blinking in the left uppercorner. Luckily I can start into 8.04. I have no idea how to continu. for now I will burn a knoppix cd so I can read the ext4 partition with 10.10 and hope to find something to solve this.
