View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm fairly new to Debian/GNOME, and I'm running Squeeze and GNOME 2 and I have some questions. How exactly do I change the background image for the login window? I've looked up various suggestions but none of them seem to work - the appearances window does not ever seem to change the background image for the login screen. Also, whenever I log out or when I close the lid on my laptop and it suspends, I am unable to log back in - all I see is a black screen and my cursor, which I can move.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI remember that 10 years ago or so, I used to have on a Debian desktop a clock which displayed the time on a custom level of approximation, e.g. quarter to five for 04:47 or even "morning/late evening/etc". I can't remember if it was a customization of the default clock or a separate program. I didn't have luck searching on the internet. Is it possible to get something similar with Gnome on Jessie?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently went through a desktop crisis after removing unity from 11.04, installing openbox, hating it, and then installing Gnome 3. What's weird is certain applications like chrome and some other system things appear to use the theme I have (as in, they look nice) but windows like terminal, file browser, and most other applications including the default log in screen all look like windows 95.
you can see the square unstyled buttons. I'm just wondering how to apply a full on system theme to apply to all windows in gnome 3. tweak-gnome didn't look like it could do it, and after running through the themes (redmond, clearlooks, etc) they didn't have any impact on these windows.
how i can change the run application window of gnome panel; i had done this with glade-3 but i dont know how to manage its signal and slots for example by clicking on a button it opens an app ,i cant manage it signals and slots

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have my toolbars (top and bottom) set to autohide to save screen real estate, but I need to have a clock so I always know what time it is (my clock widget keeps disappearing). There's actually tons of real estate going to waste on the top window bar. I know the program I'm looking at, and I know where I am. I think it would be cool if we could just get rid of the top bar thing, or at least make it 1/3 the size.
Otherwise, I'd like to have a clock on it, at least, since it's completely blank all the way across to the right side of the screen.
I just have install Mac-theme on my Leny, and it make's my Window-border from right to Left, i want to have these on right(as by default in debian)...

View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen I open either my user or root terminal, by right-clicking on the Minimise Window option in the top right-hand corner (beside the Restore Window and Close Window options), if I tick the Always on Top option from the drop-down menu, then the terminal Window (or any other window when this option is selected) will not minimise automatically on clicking the mouse in another open window like, for example, Iceweasel. This is particularly useful, for example, when cutting and pasting commands from the browser to the terminal and I recommend it. But how can the Always on Top option be set to permanent for a specific program, like the the Terminal so that it will be saved for the next time one logs in to a Gnome session?

1. Leave Gnome installed, but prevent it from launching when typing startx
2. Have both X11 and my prefered default window manager (blackbox) startup when I type startx (or similar)
My ultimate goal is to leave Gnome installed but "dormant" and when I do a remote ssh -X be able to use X11 forwarding with blackbox.
I have a WinXP machine that is monopolizing a perfectly good monitor. I would like to use that monitor in my Debian Multiple Monitor setup. Is there a way that I can operate my WinXP machine's desktop remotely from a Gnome window on my Debian machine? In this window I would like to be able to see and use the desktop of the WinXP installation on the other hardware platform just as if I were on the WinXP machine itself. I use Synergy already to share the keyboard and mouse. Hearing about Remote Desktops suggests to me that this might be possible. If it is possible how is it done? What software / hardware is required to accomplish it? Are there any "secrets" that I need or should know of to make this work?

- I've made a new user account.
- .gtkrc-2.0 in my home is auto-generated, .gtkrc.mine does not exist.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm using Debian 2.6.32-5-amd64 (testing) for several years now. Initial installation was done at least two years ago, without any issues. I do keep my system up-to-date. However, a few months ago, after an apt-get update/upgrade/system-upgrade, I discovered that, if I try to launch KDE or Gnome, I only see a black screen and I actually need to restart my computer. On some cases the system even froze and needed to hardware reset, and run fsck in recovery mode after rebooting. Really very annoying... Since I don't use KDE or Gnome desktops (just a few applications depending on KDE/Gnome libraries), I didn't bother to figure out what is happening. However, others use my computer occasionally, and I would like to get KDE and Gnome working again. I purged and reinstalled everything that had to do with KDE or Gnome, even deleted KDE/Gnome files in my home directory, but the black screens are still there, everytime I try to start any of those desktops. Note that kdm or gdm don't even mention KDE or Gnome as available sessions, although all necessary packages are installed. I have no idea what to do to fix the problem.
Another question: I recently got rid of gdm because it is buggy and tried wdm instead. However, /etc/profile is not read anymore. Apparently, wdm does not use /etc/profile by default. Is there any way to change this?
I'm using this metacity theme along with the included (and AMAZING) emerald theme for the window borders. Just wondering if there's any way I can keep the window borders as they are, but put shadows on for the gnome-panel and my stickynotes? See HERE.When I try to adjust the shadow settings in emerald, it changes everything -- including the window borders, which make the theme look horrible.I know I can specify certain types and classes of windows when using compiz as default window decorator with ccsm, but is there any way to do something like this with emerald?

View 6 Replies View RelatedIt simply doesn't work. No matter what city I put there (I even tried putting American cities) the applet just widens a bit to the left and shows nothing. Doing some searches, I learned the protocol it uses is called METAR, the data is provided by airports, and the list of locations is at:[URL]..
But this file doesn't exist! What exists is:[URL].. And that one only has American cities. But, as I said, not even American cities work. Where should I start looking?
