Apr 22, 2011I get black screen when i press ctrl-alt-f1 or when i try to stop gdm, pressing alt-f7 nothing happens.
vga is ati hd 5650 how can i fix?

Nov 18, 2015Now that I'm more lucid I can adjust the format a bit. If I try opening the TTY the screen goes completely black after visualizing few artifact on the bottom of the screen.
Pressing Ctrl+Alt+F7 brings me back safely to the GUI
So far I tried to modify the /etc/defaults/grub file to uncomment the grub resolution and the grub_terminal to no avail. Now at least it seams to waste some less time to load the grub (it took something like 15 sec before) but it lost the previous green/torquoise background and now it's white char on black background.
On a side note pressing C on the grub to reach the grub console gave me some answer I don't know how to deal with... I was trying to use vbeinfo but it didn't found the command and so I tried the insmod:

Nov 10, 2009So I pressed ctrl+alt+F3 and now my whole system is basically one big terminal - black screen and only accepts terminal commands. How do I go back to the 'normal' Ubuntu desktop screen? Rebooting only takes me back to the terminal command page described above. I can access root commands with sudo bash and my password, if fact all terminal commands seem to work. Is there a command I can use to go back to the regular desktop?

Feb 12, 2010Though I kinda do wish that I could just fully migrate to Fedora (or Linux in general), I still do need Vista for some things (like, until I can get this mess with my tablet and speakers sorted out). However, when I tried to boot into Vista this morning (by selecting "other" in GRUB) it said "BTMNGR is missing. Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete to restart."
Will I have to use the Vista Home Premium installation disc to fix this? Surely, telling it to automatically fix startup problems would work, right? I'll try later today PS This problem could also be related to my other 'yum update' problems. All of my problems started when I performed a whole kernel update, so that could also be why I can't boot into vista.

Oct 30, 2009I ran into a problem the moment i installed 11.1. The GUI wouldn't show up (ctrl+alt+f2 yeilded a black screen with a blinking underscore). Failsafe worked fine, though.
So, i tried entering, one by one, every parameter that was entered in the failsafe boot options. Entering 'x11failsafe' gave me a flawless GUI. So, i opened the '/boot/grub/menu.lst' file and added this parameter in the 'showopts' of the normal mode, to make it permanent. Fine. Now, what exactly have i done?
Note- I use an NVidia 8000 series Graphic card. I'll post more details if you need them.

Apr 20, 2011He just installed KUbuntu 10.10 (multiboot with Vista).. When he reboots his laptop from Linux, he directly has a black screen (in spite of the "Press F2 for setup" screen and the GRUB menu). So the problem is before GRUB start. The first thing displayed in fact is the login screen. He doesn't have this problem when he reboots from Windows. The "Press F2 for setup" screen and the GRUB menu are normally displayed. It's only when he reboots from Kubuntu. I precise that it's only a display problem because even if the GRUB menu is not displayed I can still navigate with arrow keys and start Linux or Windows by pressing Enter (because I know Linux is at the top of GRUB menu, and Windows at the bottom). Do you have an idea of what could occure with Linux to disable display at boot?

Jul 2, 2010Here's my problem: While choosing to compress certain folders from within Windows 7, I marked the boot manager as 'compressed'. Now, when I try to boot, I'm not able to boot into Windows 7, or any other OS (I get an error: bootmgr is compressed, press Ctrl+Alt+Del to continue, which restarts the system and the same cycle continues.
I have a Windows 7 + open SUSE + Ubuntu 10.04 LTS wubi install boot setup. To complicate things, its a laptop, and the DVD drive is conked. Is there any way I can boot into any of my OS's? If not using a live boot, can I, perhaps make a bootable USB flash drive, boot into it and uncompress the boot manager ? Note: I'm typing this from another desktop, and I do not have Windows installed on this.

Dec 14, 2010I've been running 5.05. Just in the last few weeks after I update the screen will go black after a few reboots. I believe it has something to do with the ATI Drivers. If I clean install and install the smxi drivers after a few reboots the screen goes black right before the log in screen. This also happens with Mepis and Dream Linux which are Debian Base.

Installed Mint afterwards (as debian didnt boot) and debian is visible in the boot menu. Upon selection of debian, I just get a black screen and the monitor gives the message "input not supported". I havent had any such problems with numerous distros over the 2 years.

I burned the CD and ran the installer and everything installed okay, but when I went to boot it up for the first time, the screen blacked out after a few seconds of scrolling text and shows no signs of life after that. Dec 28, 2014I am a complete beginner to Linux (I understand a little bit of terminal from my OSX usage). I did a fresh install of Debian on an older Gateway laptop to try and make it usable for something. There is no other OS installed to this machine, I would like it to run Debian exclusively.
I used the UNetbootin application to install Debian from USB [URL] ..... Everything seemed to install just fine (no errors). However, upon 1st boot, I am presented with a black screen with a blinking white cursor. I cannot seem to get past this. I searched around and found this post: [URL] ... which seems identical except that their machine is a Mac. I had no luck using the REISUB reboot method. When I hold Alt+SysRq or Alt+PrtSc, it makes a lot of beeping noise. Issuing the REISUB keystrokes while holding does nothing.

Instead of taking me to a splash login screen, it instead remains a black screen like a console where I type in my username and password, and it remains in this black command line mode beginning ben@ben-desktop:~$. Like it does in a terminal. What can I do to resolve this? This is completely new to me and hasn't happened to me in Ubuntu or Mint. I am familiar with using the terminal for the odd task but obviously I can't use it like this without a visible desktop.

Sep 19, 2015Yesterday I installed Debian Jessie, I ran into a few problems at first, but in the end everything worked fine. It started the desktop environment (gnome). I installed a few programs(sudo, chromium, tor) and saw that everything was working correctly. I shutdown the system with the command "shutdown now". Then I booted into windows to make sure I hadn't broken anything there (which I did not), but when I tried going back to Debian, it booted to a black screen with a cross as a pointer. By pressing ALT CTRL <FKEY>, I can effectively get to other virtual terminals and login there, however trying to start the desktop environment with "startx" results in the same thing.
I installed Debian on an external hard drive and made four partitions, boot, /(root), /home, and swap.
I also tried to apt-get install --reinstall gnome and apt-get install --reinstall xorg, but the result is still the same
Not actually solved, but in the end just reinstalling got rid of the problem.

Feb 23, 2016I have installed Debian Jessie 8.0.3 64-bit net install on a MSI CX620. Installation went fine but trying to boot it up the first time nothing but a black screen shows up. I've tried:
Holding shift on startup - Nothing
Press down all keys - Not much, only ctrl+alt+delete makes the screen turn off and then on again.
I'm thinking that I had secure boot on which I now after installation see could be a problem, but I didn't think it would be a problem as I could just go into bios and turn it off, but seeing now that I can't even go into bios it may be a problem.

Dec 31, 2010I'm trying to install Xorg manually in Squeeze on my IBM X30 Thinkpad with intel graphics (it works in Lenny). I used aptitude and installed "xorg" and "fluxbox", but when I restart my computer I get a blank screen, instead of the console login request that I was expecting. (Note: I did not install any login managers). So exactly what happens is that the screen goes black (just backlight on)during boot process. Once I'm at the black screen doing CTRL+ALT+Backspac, Ctrl+Alt+Del or Ctrl+Alt+F[1-7] will not result in anything.
I tried booting with the single user mode, but same result, so the only way I could acess my log-files was by using a systemrescue-CD. What I find odd about this is that I cant find any configuration files at all. No xorg.conf anywhere in /etc, /etc/X11, nor in /home. I don't even have a /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d folder.Am I expected to write these by myself? And if Xorg is the source of my troubles, why is it starting by itself, without any installed login managers? Xorg not working is one thing, but not even being able to access the console, or log in to my computer makes it rather difficult to search for errors.

May 14, 2015I installed jessie amd64 lxde to a thumb drive to use with a laptop. Vanilla install using the amd64 lxde live cd. Upon booting the usb system, I am presented with a black screen with blinking cursor. No grub screen, no ability to type any commands and no ability to switch to another terminal. I tried booting into the live cd and I could get into the intro splash screen. Booting to the live system from there would also hang at a black screen.
However, using the kernel parameter "nomodeset" from the splash screen did allow the live system to boot to the desktop. I booted the live system, mounted the usb system and chrooted into it. I edited /etc/default/grub to include "nomodeset" in the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT and GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX variables and then ran update-grub.
Upon reboot to the usb system the problem still occurred. The video card in question is a amd firepro 5800m which has an lspci line of mobile radeon 5000 series. This card was supported in wheezy and apparently works with the live system.

Jan 3, 2011I am using the actual "testing", Debian works in version 5 on my notebook (or at least starts), but I can't use it b/c I have too much new hardware what is already implemented in the testint Version. I already had debian 6 running but that wasn't the good way to do it.
I have an Alienware m17x R1, with a q9000, a nivida mobile 260gtx. I know that the Problem the basic Debian Driver for Nvidia cards is. It is enough if I can use at least the command line of Debian to install an actual Nvidida driver and get the system running. But that's not possible!
I solved it once, with plugging in an External Monitor to my Notebook, but I don't have one at home at the moment and honestly there must be a better way for. How to "let debian 6. use the Notebook Screen"?
