Debian Installation :: Testing - All Logins Fail / System Error Message From The Passwd Command?

Mar 18, 2010

I just installed Squeeze on an older PC. Installation seemed to go fine. But when it booted up on the installed system for the first time, I could not login - username/password failure. I tried every possible typing error and CAP LOCK error I could have made - still nothing.

I brought up a console window and tried logging in as root - same problem.

I booted into single user mode and entered passwd command to set new root password - I got a SYSTEM ERROR message from the passwd command.

I booted to a Live CD, went to /etc/shadow and deleted the encrypted password. Rebooted on the hard drive, went to console window and logged in as root, with no password required. So far so good. I entered passwd command to set new password and got the same SYSTEM ERROR message.

The machine seems fine when running on the Live CD, and the install seemed to go fine.

Debian Installation :: Non-system Disk Or Disk Error ?

Jan 22, 2011

After installation of debian, using the squeeze net-installer, on a HP elitebook 6930P, i get the following error. "non-system disk or disk error"

It is right after boot process, and just when it should load grub. Grub is installed in the MBR. Windows7, is installed as well, and is not an option to remove. (Should not be the problem though).

/ is set with the bootable flag.

The installation went without any issues, and I have actually tried to install twice with the exact same thing.

Debian Installation :: Can't Install From CD (isolinux: Disk Error 32) / Resolve It?

Dec 30, 2010

I'm getting a bit tierd of linux right now.. I can't get the CD, with netinstall on, to start.
I've tried different harddrives and burned it several times at different speed and so on. I've tried to just i386 and amd64, both gives the same error:
isolinux: Disk error 32, AX = 42B0, driver 9F

The harddrives that I got is small 10-80 gb, so they are a bit old.. but they worked the last time I've tried to install (until I got a grub loading error)

I'm not sure what to do at all. Tried to search on google and here without finding something

Debian Installation :: Squeeze Grub2 Error 15 With LVM2 Encrypted Disk?

Feb 9, 2011

This is my specific solution to my specific problem. After updating to Squeeze from my prior Lenny distro (amd64 with whole disk encrytion using LVM2, dm-crypt, LUKS) everything went well - at first. I was duped like so many, thinking that all was well and I could remove the legacy-grub (aka: Grub1) and just use grub-pc (aka: Grub2). As soon as I removed the legacy-grub and rebooted my laptop, I was confronted with:

GRUB Loading stage1.5 GRUB loading, please wait..Error 15 At this point I wasn't sure if it was a Grub problem or a deeper encryption problem - especially after reading that some people had missing packages in Squeeze (lvm2, dm-setup, initramfs-tools, etc.)

Okay, the solution for me.

1. download and burn to disk: debian-live-6.0.0-amd64-rescue.iso[URL]..

2. scroll to and press enter/return on: text rescue

3. choose a root directory - for example: /dev/blah/root (I wrote down the list of possible /dev/.... for reference - this helped me remember where and what I had partitioned in Lenny)

4. choose: Execute a shell in /dev/blah/root

5. once in the shell, I discovered I needed to mount a few of those partitions that I had written down in order to get access to grub-probe, update-grub, grub-install, etc. You may not have to if your partitions are minimal. I you need to use other partitions, type (for example):

Fedora Installation :: F11 - "non-system Disk Error Replace And Strike Any Key When Ready"

Sep 25, 2009

I had Windows 7 RC installed and F10 on the same machine. HP 6730s Intel Dual Core. Everything was working fine and I don't remember doing anything special when installing Fedora 10. I decided to install F11 from DVD, installation went fine but after rebooting all I get is "non-system disk error or disk error. replace and strike any key when ready". I couldn't find any relevant post in this forum and googling I found that this could be a disk starting to fail but I don't thing this is the case here. I'm trying to reinstall just now, I chose to install grub at /dev/sda (default), should it be /dev/sda1 ?

CentOS 5 :: Fontconfig Error: Cannot Load Default Config File

Nov 18, 2009

I am getting a strange font problem (see attached screenshot) for a user logging in over VNC Server, I am also logged in over VNC however I am no experiancing any problems... This was the case on CentOS 5.3 and on 5.4. I have tried removing the .vnc dir in the users home dir and re running vncserver so that it recreates it, I found this in the logs:

1. (nautilus:14718): Pango-WARNING **: No builtin or dynamically
2.loaded modules were found. Pango will not work correctly.
3.This probably means there was an error in the creation of:
4.'/etc/pango/pango.modules'
5. You should create this file by running pango-querymodules.

Debian :: Grub Error - No Such Disk ?

May 9, 2010

I installed Debian squeeze amd64 (using LVM with ext4 for /, /home, and ext2 for /boot). This is on a whole hdd on its own. Before I installed it, I have win7 on it. There is also another hdd with winxp. The dual boot loader is in the hdd. After I installed Debian, grub 1.98 was installed. After reboot, grub says "welcome", and after 10 seconds, it says "error: no such disk". It went on to display the menu with a choice of my debian and MS windows.

There does not seem to be any effect of this "error:no such disk". However, after I chose Debian to boot, gnome comes on, and I typed in the username and password. The screen goes blank for about 30 seconds before my desk top comes on.

I have 2 questions:

1. How do I fix my grub "error:no such disk" message?
2. Is there something wrong with a 30 seconds delay for the desktop to show after typing username and password, and if so, what can be done?

I'm somewhat familiar with Ubuntu (familiar but not sharp!) but have never tried Debian OS until now. I've installed Debian 5 64bit as a guest on a Mac host. I'm impressed how smooth the install went; even installing VB Guest Additions went smoothly. But, I get a "Your system had a kernel failure" error after booting. I have searched the forum & didn't find this error. Everything seems to work okay but is there an update that isn't showing in the Update Manager? Could this have something to do with VirtualBox 3.1.4?

Ubuntu Installation :: Error 29: Disk Write Error Then Trying Again Windows Seems To Boot But It Takes Much Longer

Aug 17, 2010

i finally decided to updgrade from Hardy Heron to Lucid Lynx. for this i made a backup of my old install, then i couldnt find my Lucid CD so i used a Karmic one to partition my old ext3 to ext4. There were some errors but after trying a few times it worked. Installed Karmic, rebooted (worked fine), downloaded all updates - (did NOT reboot to let updates take effect) and upgraded to Lucid.

Everything went fine so far. Now when i try to boot into Lucid the system hangs, i've also got a windowsXP partition on there so i tried booting that, first grub tells me Error 29: Disk write error then trying again windows seems to boot but it takes much longer than it should and seems to hang.

Then i tried Karmic and Lucid LiveCD (which i found in the meantime) none of the LiveCDs make it to boot after about 20 minutes. (previously they worked fine)looking at the errors it seems to be something about the harddrive. Why the harddrive would stop the LiveCD booting is a mystery to me but the same messages appear when i select Recovery from the Grub menu so i guess the problem is related.

Fedora Installation :: GRUB Error - Error - No Such Disk

Dec 22, 2009

I'm trying to install Fedora for the first time on my Desktop. Unfortunately, upon restart once the installation is complete I get the following error:

Code:

This is from Fedora 12 x86_64 DVD. I presume that this obviously has to do with my disk selection during partitioning, during which I deselcted the two drives that I didn't want to be part of the install and left the one that I did selected. I also selected "use entire disk". The drive had copies of both Ubuntu and Windows 7 on it, which I expect were wiped out during install.

I know that the details are sparse...but that's all I did. I'm happy to go back into the installer to retreive any necessary information that may be needed/to reinstall.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 - Unable To Access Disks Error

Dec 20, 2010

I'm fairly new to Ubuntu/Linux. Here's the problem I'm encountering after I tried to install Ubuntu Desktop 10.10. I was installing from a CD, as I tried to install alongside Windows XP, (The setup detected 2 hard drives, the first one was 40 GB, with all my windows stuff on it, the other was a 160 GB one), I got the message "error informing kernel about changes made to .....", which would not disappear no matter what I clicked. So, choosing the seemingly only option, I force powered down the computer. As I powered it back on.

Windows did not boot, instead I just got a black screen of nothing but a flashing _. I tried booting from the LiveCD again, which worked well enough, EXCEPT, the 40 GB hardrive full of my Windows stuff and files was not detected, and the 160 GB drive was detected only in the drives tool, but not accessible. I have no clue as to how to: 1. retrieve important files from my 40 GB drive. 2. Restore Windows XP professional.

Fedora Installation :: Error - There Isn't Enough Free Space On The Disks To Create The Layout

Aug 14, 2009

I got a new computer (core i7, 6gb ram, 500gb hdd).I first installed Windows 7, because I remembered how Fedora 9 created a dual-boot screen nicely, while if I installed XP on a system with Fedora 9 it would just take over the boot and boot to XP.Anyway, so Windows 7 is installed, and I got the Fedora 11 DVD install.I partitioned the hdd as thus (on win7 installation): 93gb windows system, 300gb media partition, 90gb unformatted. When I boot the installation and select the "use free space" I get an error that there isn't enough free space on the disks to create the layout.I also tried to create a custom layout, but after a few errors I gave up on that what should I do to get Fedora 11 installed?

Fedora Installation :: Does Preupgrade F10 To F11Beta Fail On SCSI Disks?

I have a SCSI disk so I'm suspicious preupgrade is having trouble accessing it? That prefix "hd" looks suspicious, should that be:

or maybe
Code:

Ubuntu Installation :: 9.10 - Non-system Disk Or Disk Error With Manual Partitions

Apr 9, 2010

This is the third 9.10 install to do this on two different laptops, so wondering what's up...

In both cases, the goal was to leave a large chunk of unpartitioned disk after the Ubuntu partitions, for a second OS install or a filesystem Ubuntu cannot create like NTFS.

When I install with manual partitions, the system can't boot and asks for me to insert a system disk and press any key. When I reinstall telling Ubuntu to "use the entire disk" it then works.

First laptop, first try:

Remainder of the 500GB disk is free space.

Fails to boot, "insert system disk".

First laptop, second try without the /boot partition:

Remainder of the 500GB disk is free space.

Fails to boot, "insert system disk".

"use entire disk" works perfectly.

Second laptop, first try:

Same thing, non-system disk or disk error, insert system disk.

Second try "use entire disk" is currently in progress but I expect the same to happen.

Debian Installation :: DMA Error On Calgary PHB 0x0

I did a distribution upgrade to Debian 7 which went through without any trouble and the machine rebooted fine. during further works on the machine it did not come up after a reboot and would show the following as last message on the screen:

[12.856028] Calgary: DMA error on Calgary PHB 0x0, 0x02020000@CSR 0x00018000@PLSSR

After another reboot the machine came up. i reinstalled debian 7 from scratch because i thought the distribution upgrade could have gone wrong somewhere. over the next days i rebooted a few times and often needed at least 2 attempts to get the server to work. same error comes up just with a slightly different time code. updated to debian 7.1 and still the same issue. installing Debian 6 and the problem does not show up.
