View 2 Replies View RelatedI am new to Debian but not Linux-based systems. I have been experimenting a lot with Debian Lenny/Squeeze. I am growing more comfortable each day with the Debian design. Yet there remain many unexplored areas. I am creating a migration check list. Things to check, prepare, or reconfigure when moving from one Linux-based system to Debian.
I have a good computer background and my current check list probably is fairly good. Yet I would appreciate input and opinions from experienced Debian users of things to watch in such a migration. Login defs, passwd/group files, different directory locations, keymaps, services and daemons, etc. I am not too concerned with the desktop as I plan to stick with KDE 3.5 for a while and I can basically move those settings across.
In a debian squeeze box + Xfce the numlock is never enabled at login. Is there some daemon or some configuration to turn numlock on everytime I log into my Xfce session?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI have a fileserver running debian 6 and I would like to be able to remote control it over VNC. I have enabled Remote Desktop in Gnome and it works, however I have to be logged into Gnome for it to work. Gnome doesn't enable vino before a user is logged in for some reason. This presents a problem as there is no keyboard or mouse connected letalone a screen.
I looked up the issue on google and found this: [URL] Long story short, I have to edit /etc/gdm/Init/Default and insert "/usr/lib/vino/vino-server &" just before 'exit 0' at the end of the file, and change "KillInitClients" to "false" in /etc/gdm/gdm.conf. I edited the first one as it says, but I can't find gdm.conf anywhere. I did however find a 'daemon.conf' in the /etc/gdm directory, and added the line there.
When I try to connect after doing the above, my vnc viewer (client) just disappears - no errors, message, sound - nothing. It doesn't even ask for a password. I checked the comments in the link, and the second to last comment suggests it's because of some negotiating-issue which should be an easy fix:
Turned out I had to enable connections to vino not related to my user account. To do this run sudo vino-preferences and duplicate the settings instructed here
Gnome loads without problems when Kernel Mode Setting is enabled. Original message
Daily updated Debian Testing | Custom Gnome installation
Intel GS45 chipset | Intel GMA 4500HD graphic card
The title is rather vague because I haven't been able to identify the cause of the problem. I installed Debian Testing using the daily builds of March 6th and 7th with the same results: the system fails to load the Gnome desktop after the log in. Instead, a pale blue background is shown. No panels, no window manager, nothing. I can move the cursor but there's no context menu and the key bindings don't work, turning the session useless. The problem exists in all accounts, and persists even when the dot-files are deleted after the first Gnome start.
After trial and error, I found out that if I changed to a virtual console (VC1 to VC6) and go back to VC7 (sometimes VC8), the Gnome desktop loads as expected. The pale blue background is shown over/instead of the actual background and I need to cover ("paint") it with a window to show the actual one. This pointed me to a Gnome Session or a graphics card error. Indeed, if I disable Gnome Session, the Gnome desktop loads after the log in. Of course, no interface settings are set. I checked the Gnome Session's bug list without luck and the error messages in .xsession-errors aren't conclusive, for they appear in other cases.
About the graphics card: the video settings work (screen settings, 3D accelaration, recovery after suspend to RAM/disk) but Xorg's log shows several erros and warnings when setting up the system (mostly related to the video and touchpad settings). Right now, I'm building a custom xorg.conf file to try to decreases udev's errors and see if it affects the Gnome problem. I've spent hours trying to solve this problem. It's annoying to lose interface settings after closing the session (key bindings and brightness settings, for example).
On a fresh install of squeeze (with the exception of some installed video firmware and the latest updates from the repos) from the kde cd.
System is running an ASUS Sk8V motherboard with onboard sound, also a SB Audigy 2 ZS sound card. Speakers are plugged into the sound card.
Sound worked fine before in Lenny except I had to create /etc/modprobe.d/sound with the following to get the system to prioritize the SB card over the onboard audio
options snd-emu10k1 index=0
options snd-via82xx index=1
I've done the same with the new install, and still no audio.
I followed the troubleshooting steps from the FAQ forum, but am stuck on the end, which suggests doing the following:
The following string needs to be added to the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file
options snd-hda-intel model=YOUR_MODEL

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have triplebuffer set up in the xorg.conf, i am using the squeeze Nvidia drivers (the ancient one), installed debian way.
In nvidia-settings, i have enabled all the entries of sync to vblank, but after i log in, if i go a glxgears, i get 1000+fps, then i start nvidia-settings, the screen flickers when it starts for some reason, resolution is still at native (1366x768), after starting and quitting nvidia-settings, starting glxgears made it 60fps.
How to i make sure sync to vblank is forced? i prefer it this way.
Recently I have noticed that at times my keyboard will act as though shift is pressed. That is, letters are capitalized and when i press a key, its shift equivalent is shown. I actually first noticed this behaviour on fedora 12 beta (i believe fedora has been using udev/DeviceKit since F11). At the time of F12 beta I was not aware of fedora using udev. Where can I find a comprehensive guide to setup udev? Or if it all fails, how to re-enable settings in xorg?

Below is the recipe I've used to compile dwm from source on Squeeze
su
apt-get install devscripts debian-keyring
apt-get build-dep dwm

It all seems to work, however debuild gave an error about secret keys. Is this a sensible procedure? just installed debian squeeze KDE after years of ubuntu and suse.. For some reason, after I finally got both scrolling and tapping to work, I have a weird weird touchpad through my xorg.conf: - tapping on a tab in chrome closes the tab.
- tapping in a text field pastes txt that is in the clipboard, each successive click keeps pasting the same thing
- the left side of the touchpad is not enabled for vertical scrolling (?), and for some reason the directions are inverted (move finger up to scroll webpage down)
- when having multiple windows open, tapping that window will highlight it, but the previously selected window stays overtop of the now selected windows. Using the actual left click button the windows change normally.

I have a fresh installed debian server.
I am not sure if an FTP was installed or not.
How can I check that?
I have this deb from a package in unstable...
It calls for libhdf5-openmpi, which is not compatible with libhdf5-serial which in turn is used by several packages that i have installed...
It's either the serial or the openmpi version... not both.
Since this specific package from sid calls for this dependence, which way do i have to check that if i override dependency checking it wont overwrite anything along the way...?
All other dependencies can be met... except this particular one...
And i wont be using the functionality that calls for openmpi...
I am not sure whether I ask this question on the right forum. My debian mailserver is depending on a MySQL database. Every reboot it takes around 30 minutes to boot because of the database check. I could not find the right command or setting to boot without this check. Do you know how to do this.
View 1 Replies View RelatedBut, given that I've mixed some source and unstable packages in with my stable system, I'm now experiencing a few eccentricities (which really should make me swear off screwing around with my system, but, alas, I don't seem to learn from experience).
I digress. Anyway, in trying to play cdroms (with xplaycd and with kaffeine), it does not work. Kaffeine gives me the following feedback:
Code:
The host you're trying to connect is unknown.
Check the validity of the specified hostname. (unable to resolve)
PS, I am a member of both audio and cdrom.

Is it possible to check out the log as well when you are checking out a version from some repo. For instance this is a game I like :-
[Code]...
The game is called dawn-rpg and one can find about it at dawn-rpg.sourceforge.net but that's not what I want to talk about. The thing it would be so much more convenient for me if instead of going to the svn mirror or whatever it is and checking out the log, it was local. I know I could do something like this :-
svn log > svnlog150611.txt
This would download the log file and put the contents in some text file I have named as svnlog150611.txt . The problem with this way of doing things is that each time I have to check out I would have to create a new txt file with that date. If there was a way one could check out the log as well when checking out a new version/release it would be nice. Its also possible that this might be already be there and there might be another command to use locally that I am not aware about. In that case, would look forward to people to share the same.
freshly installed Debian-netinst, configured internet connection. Pinged Google - all transmitted packets were received, 0% loss.
Yet I am not sure if I have internet connection for what ever package I am trying to install using apt-get install package_name, I receive

How can I check internet connection from CLI?
I want to install Debian Stable 8 Jessie. I've tried the main website, of course, first. But there are a lot of options there to download Debian 8: CD, DVD, Live etc. I downloaded debian-live-8.0.0-amd64-lxde-desktop.iso and I booted live in VirtualBox. It boots fine and the operating system looks in order.
Questions/problems:
1. The desktop icon for the installer says "Install Debian sid". But from what I know "sid" is unstable version. I do not want unstable, nor testing. I just want normal Stable. Did I got the wrong version? The website is a bit confusing about which version is which.
2. How do I check the md5 of the iso? I know how to do that with other distros, they usually specify it near the download link and I can execute in terminal the command 'md5sum' followed by the specific linux distro iso and then compare the numbers. But I can find no such thing for Debian. I searched the website but could not find any clear info.
3. After I install, what should I do in order to make Iceweasel work with Flash and multimedia codecs? I also need Skype and the proprietary Nvidia drivers.
And if I enable these non free, do I get automatic updates for them like for the rest of standard Debian software? Or, if not, what should I do?
The idea is that I want a system that is as stable and bug free as possible, but I won't use many apps beyond these ones. I don't need the latest and greatest software as long as these get security updates. Should I be ok with this configuration?
Also how do I check the latest version available? I gather to update a driver I need to update the kernel so ill not be doing that but im trying to get more familiar with linux here. I know how to do this in windows so it would be good to be able to check driver versions in linux too. Im on debian 8.1 with intel HD4400 graphics.
