Debian Multimedia :: Audio Devices Not Enabled?

Sep 18, 2010

On a fresh install of squeeze (with the exception of some installed video firmware and the latest updates from the repos) from the kde cd.

System is running an ASUS Sk8V motherboard with onboard sound, also a SB Audigy 2 ZS sound card. Speakers are plugged into the sound card.

Sound worked fine before in Lenny except I had to create /etc/modprobe.d/sound with the following to get the system to prioritize the SB card over the onboard audio

options snd-emu10k1 index=0
options snd-via82xx index=1

I've done the same with the new install, and still no audio.

I followed the troubleshooting steps from the FAQ forum, but am stuck on the end, which suggests doing the following:

The following string needs to be added to the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file
options snd-hda-intel model=YOUR_MODEL

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Audio Choppy - Can't Play Any Audio With Amarok When Desktop Effects Are Enabled

Jun 7, 2011

to start off, i'll post the specs of the machine:

dell inspiron e1505
3.2 gb ram
1.86 ghz intel core duo
ati x1400 gfx
opensuse 11.4 kde 32 bit.

okay, here are the details: can't play any audio with amarok when desktop effects are enabled because the minute a window is moved, it will distort the audio. even when disabling desktop effects, some applications still cause this. can't play videos videos even with desktop effects disabled because of the same reason.

i just switched from ubuntu and when i ran version 11.04, i had to disable kms to do anything. i tried on opensuse 11.4 and the audio was flawless but the gfx went all to hell.

Debian Multimedia :: No Audio - Error Message - No Volume Control GStreamer Plugins And/or Devices Found

Sep 2, 2010

I'm brand new to debian and quite new to unix based systems in general.

I just switched to debian from ubuntu in search of something different and I want to find a system that works for me before I settle down.

I DO NOT HAVE A SECONDARY OS

just two problems I have with debian:

No sound

Error message: No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found.

When I try to open sound from the speaker icon at top right.

I think it's a driver issue but Its not as easy as ubuntu was lspci:

My trackpad also does not work so I have to open documents manually if I don't bring my mouse to class.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Outputing To Two Audio Devices At Once?

Jun 6, 2010

My band play with a backing track running out of my laptop. We have a stereo mix of the backing track running into the PA system, plus another stereo mix of the backing track with a metronome running into headphones worn by our drummer. This means that the laptop is outputting 4 audio channels simultaneously. The catch is, i only have a two channel USB audio device, in addition to the two channel built-in soundcard. The trick i found to accomplishing what i desire within Windows was relatively simple - i used the ASIO4ALL driver, which effectively allowed me to combine the outputs into one "virtual" ASIO audio device which has 4 output channels, which i could then send audio to using my digital audio workstation software (REAPER). Luckily this has worked perfectly every time we've done it on stage, however at rehearsals it has on occasion failed as Windows has encountered errors, etc. Naturally it would be devastating for this to happen on stage, and so i've decided to try Linux out, as it has the reputation of being extremely stable (i've heard stories about machines being switched on for years without crashing).

Now, i've tried for a couple of days to get this to work, messing around with JACK, ALSA, and PortAudio, and using a range of programs such as Qtractor, Ardour, and MusE; however, i've only ever been able to get stereo audio to come out of one device at a time. I do however know that it is possible to do what i want, because i found a little DJ application which allowed me to set a different audio device to be in "headphones", whilst my other audio device outputs the currently playing track.

I'm by no means a proficient Linux user, however if something has to be done through a Terminal, with adequate instructions i'm sure i could do it. What i'm after though really, is a simple and clear guide to accomplishing what i want, which to recap is:

A to simultaneously output audio to two separate audio devices at once from within the same program.

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Locking Of Audio Devices: 11.2 Versus 11.3

Jul 23, 2011

I am running a java-based music player on two machines, one running 11.2 and the other running 11.3. I wrote the code myself, so I have complete control over it. Both machines have Sun java development kit installed, and both have version 1.6.0. The tracks of a given album are each played by a separate thread. Each thread requests the use of the audio device and plays through it. Under 11.2, the device is then locked for the use of this thread, and once the playing is through the lock on the device is automatically removed and the next thread starts playing its music without difficulty. I have no control over this lock, though. It appears to happen at the OS level, independently of my code.

When the exact same code is running under 11.3 the first thread plays through as before, but then the next thread does not manage to get hold of the audio device. It appears to play but no music is heard. When it finishes and the third thread tries to start, I get a "line unavailable" exception. difference between 11.2 and 11.3 in the locking mechanism of audio devices by an application? Is there anything programmatic I can do to remove the lock myself?

General :: Windows - Send The Same Audio Output To Two Audio Devices?

Aug 23, 2010

Say I have 2 speakers connected to 2 different sound cards. Under Windows, is it possible to have some sort of virtual device that would forward an audio stream to both sound cards? If this can't be easily done under Windows, a solution for Linux is also fine. lternatively, if the 2 speakers are connected to different channels of a sound card, is there any vendor-independent way to duplicate audio to both channels?

At the beginning, sound wasn't working, so I promoted the Intel audio device to the top of the list and then I got audio.

Next login, the system complained that there were unmanaged audio devices and I chose to keep the configuration (or something like that...).

However, now only the "Internal Audio Analog Stereo" device is listed and I have no sound again

I also tried to promote the GStreamer backend over Xine, without luck.

Debian Multimedia :: Gnome Does Not Load If KMS Is Enabled

Mar 8, 2010

Gnome loads without problems when Kernel Mode Setting is enabled. Original message

Daily updated Debian Testing | Custom Gnome installation
Intel GS45 chipset | Intel GMA 4500HD graphic card

The title is rather vague because I haven't been able to identify the cause of the problem. I installed Debian Testing using the daily builds of March 6th and 7th with the same results: the system fails to load the Gnome desktop after the log in. Instead, a pale blue background is shown. No panels, no window manager, nothing. I can move the cursor but there's no context menu and the key bindings don't work, turning the session useless. The problem exists in all accounts, and persists even when the dot-files are deleted after the first Gnome start.

After trial and error, I found out that if I changed to a virtual console (VC1 to VC6) and go back to VC7 (sometimes VC8), the Gnome desktop loads as expected. The pale blue background is shown over/instead of the actual background and I need to cover ("paint") it with a window to show the actual one. This pointed me to a Gnome Session or a graphics card error. Indeed, if I disable Gnome Session, the Gnome desktop loads after the log in. Of course, no interface settings are set. I checked the Gnome Session's bug list without luck and the error messages in .xsession-errors aren't conclusive, for they appear in other cases.

About the graphics card: the video settings work (screen settings, 3D accelaration, recovery after suspend to RAM/disk) but Xorg's log shows several erros and warnings when setting up the system (mostly related to the video and touchpad settings). Right now, I'm building a custom xorg.conf file to try to decreases udev's errors and see if it affects the Gnome problem. I've spent hours trying to solve this problem. It's annoying to lose interface settings after closing the session (key bindings and brightness settings, for example).

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Changing Switching Audio Devices On The Fly

Feb 8, 2011

How can I change my audio output (and input) from one device to another?

(Using a Sound Blaster and USB Headphones)

Changing settings in Phonon is a hassle, and it still won't change the sound immediately for the apps... Is there a quick way to just disable one device and enable the other, without having to restart the apps that use them? (For instance, right now Skype and my browser are outputting to headphones and amarok to my speakers - one enabled device that receives everything, bang! output for everything to another device and the first device is having a nap)

I can't see any settings in KMix to facilitate such a change...

what I can do to change sound cards quickly and easily?

I recall doing this in seconds in Ubuntu via their mixer, so would it be similar if I ditched KDE in favor of Gnome??

Debian Multimedia :: Audacious / Audio Freezes For A Few Seconds

Mar 28, 2015

I have a very fresh and basic install of the weekly jessie build (this week). I've installed nvidia drivers, some non-free plugins, virtualbox, basic system tools, etc. The issue is while playing in audacious, the song will freeze for about 5 seconds. It's always around 5 seconds. Sometimes it's once or twice per song, sometimes I'll play 10 songs without it happening. BTW, all music is on a separate hard drive on an NTFS partition.

In audacious, I'm using the Winamp skin. I noticed when trying to play for the first time, it wouldn't play unless I changed the setting in audacious to use ALSA. That was the only way I could go to Settings and select my SPDIF digital output. But then doing that, other sounds no longer worked (in iceweasel). So I downloaded pavu, was able to select my onboard digital stereo output, set audacious back to pulse audio, and everything now works. Only issue is audacious is freezing every now and then... Is there a driver or module that I need to check for? Is there a way to get everything to use ALSA?

I once tried AV Linux for the low latency kernel but since it was based on Wheezy and I wasn't familiar with repos, everything was extremely outdated, so I migrated away. Should I need an LL kernel for 320kbps audio playback? I haven't sat and watched a full mkv yet, some of those have 1.5mpbs audio.

Debian Multimedia :: Avconv Gives Audio And Video Out Of Sync

Sep 10, 2015

I have a problem with avconv. Most of the use cases work spledidly, but when I need to crop a segment and then splice multiple segments together, I get problems.

The process I use is this:

1. Raw recording of short segments in high-quality AVI, These are produced by avconv, some as screencast and some by combining a PNG file with flac audio from audacity.

2. Conversion segment by segment into mp4 and ogv
Options A: -acodec aac -strict experimental -ab 128k -ac 2 -vcodec libx264 -s 640x480 -pix_fmt yuv420p -movflags +faststart -crf 22
Options B: -acodec libvorbis -ab 128k -ac 2 -vcodec libtheora -s 640x480 -b 500k

3. Splicing of the segments using MP4Box or oggCat.
(I used to do this in ffmpeg, but I have not figured out how to do it in avconv.)
This works.

In some cases I need to crop the segments, using the copy codecs and the -ss and/or =t options.

If I crop the AVI segments (between 1 and 2) the sound is clipping (this also generates a spree of error messages `Non-monotonous DTS'). If I crop mp4/ogv segments, (between 2 and 3) the remaining video, after the cropped segment are out of sync. I get the same problems with both OGV and MP4 playing them in vlc. Playing the mp4 directly in iceweasel works as it should.

Debian Multimedia :: VLC Stream Capture Audio Out Of Sync

Oct 20, 2015

So I got myself a USB capture card (EasyCap) to use for capturing gaming, digitizing my kids' old VHS movies, etc. It works fine, I've been using VLC to view and record stuff from it, but I've noticed one issue. When recording streams via VLC, even with no other programs running to give VLC as much CPU time as it wants, the audio slowly falls out of sync. I've tried the MP4 (H264/MP3) container and the OGG (Vorbis/Theora) container.

Early on you can't hardly tell, but the further into a movie you get the more out of sync the audio gets, so that by the end of the movie the audio is a good 1-2 seconds off. It's not a set amount either so I can't just split the audio to a separate file then shift it one direction or the other to make up for the difference, because like I said, the offset starts out at nothing and gets progressively larger as the movie goes on. When I select "display locally", the video/audio that is displayed stays in sync, only the video/audio that gets committed to the output file falls out of sync, and it doesn't matter if I play the file with Totem or VLC.
