Debian Hardware :: No Record Device

Jul 19, 2013

I reccently installed Debian Wheezy 7.0.0.1 and when I tried to try the microphone nothing came out only the audio coming what I'm listening to (like What you hear on Windows) and noticed that I don't have any Microphone in either Alsa or anywhere else, only Output devices.

Now Creative is gone from "Available capture devices" in Skype.

Server :: Creating Alias Or CNAME Record For Each Network Device

Oct 28, 2010

I'm running Ubuntu Server 10.04 to provide DHCP and Internet Sharing on my home LAN. In a previous configuration, I was running Fedora + AMAHI to provide the same services. As most of my linux devices are Ubuntu, I decided to decommission and rebuild my server. I've been able to configure all of my services with the exception of one. As a rule, I assign static IP or reservations based on MAC address's for any of my network devices or appliances.

One cool feature that AMAHI provided a GUI for, was the ability to recognize devices by name as well as IP. i.e.. "http://192.168.1.50" or "http://home-NAS" Going from memory, the long name upon first entry may actually have been "http://home-NAS.adomainname.com"? From my reading, I think I either need to setup up a Static Alias or CNAME for each assigned IP. I can't find any tutorial's that will walk me through this process. I'm guessing I need to generate the records under one of the master DNS zones, but that is just a guess?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Record Sound In Kubuntu 10.04 - Default Device For Audio Recording Does Not Work

Jun 28, 2010

I have detected some problems when I try to record sound in my Kubuntu 10.04 system.

The problem is that the "default" device for audio recording does not work but I have to select another device to do so. I always selected the "default" device for audio recoding but currently I have to select hw:0,2 device.

Another odd thing is that different programs show me different device. For example, Audacity shows me that I have the following audio recording devices:

- HDA Intel: ALC888 Digital (hw:0,1)
- HDA Intel: ALC888 Analog (hw:0,2)
- spdif
- default

The only one that works is hw:0,2.

But arecord shows me (when I execute "arecord -L") the following:

Finally, in KDE system preferences for audio I get that I have 2 different audio devices for audio recording:

- HDA Intel (ALC888 Analog): it is said that it will try first x-phonon (CARD=0, DEV=0) and, if the latter does not work, it will try plughw (CARD=0, DEV=0)

- HDA Intel (ALC888 Digital): it is said that it will try first x-phonon (CARD=0, DEV=1) and, if the latter does not work, it will try plughw (CARD=0, DEV=1)

Where is the hw:0,2? and how can I set the alsa system to use hw:0,2 as the default device for audio recording?

All of that would not be a problem but I also have an ubuntu 9.04 installed on a virtual machine (by using virtualbox) and audio recording doesn't work there. I suppose that it is becase of the virtual sound card is using default devices for playing and recording audio.

I must say that audio playback works fine in both host and guest systems. It is just audio recording.

Debian :: Can Record But Can't Echo Input

Jun 28, 2015

I can play audio in my alsa system and I can record. To keep things simple, I use arecord to record and aplay to play. So far so good. The problem is, I cannot hear what I am recording as I record it. Is there some way to get the input to be echoed to the output? I would optimally like to be able to do this before recording as well as during, so that I can check the levels, find the part to record on the tape, beforehand.

I have tried a test of my card: I had aplay running in one term and arecord running in another. They both ran fine and when I checked the just-recorded file, it was different audio from what I had been playing. This would indicate that the card is able to input and output at the same time, I think? I've done the usual googling as well as reading through URL... and I have done many passes of trial-and-error on my .asoundrc. The more I look at my .asoundrc, the more it looks like it should be doing what I want, but it is not.

My .asoundrc (which again, does works but does not echo audio input):
Code: Select all# pros: this allows playback and record.  Playback of several
# programs at the same time works (their outputs are mixed
# together, mono and stereo mixed to stereo)
#
# cons: input is never echoed!

Debian :: Monitor Abd Record Processes Activity?

Nov 11, 2015

I need something to monitor and record the activity of the top 5 processes in terms of CPU usage and load average during a specific timespan. I'm having some spikes in the morning and just realized it's not always at the same time so it's hard to get up and watch the processes with top. I need something that records CPU usage and load average of the processes from 4AM to 9AM (for instance) so I can debug the process that it's consuming my CPU and spitting +80 e-mails with monit each day.

Debian :: Record Files Installed By Install Script?

Jul 4, 2011

I have a program which I would like to package into a deb file for personal use. The program uses a custom install script, and to package the program I need to know which files are installed where. Besides inspecting the installer, which may not be possible if the installer is a precompiled binary, what are some best practices for discovering the filesystem changes enacted by a program installer? Should I test the installer in a chroot environment? Can I sandbox the installer in some other way?

Debian Installation :: Grub 2 Not Setting Boot Record?

Mar 21, 2011

I've been using squeeze for a year or two now, on a PC dual booting with windows xp. Not long ago I thought that, as it's now become the stable release version, I'd do a fresh install, which I've been trying to do with the first two dvds. The installation proceeds as expected, up to and including setting grub. However, although grub saysthat it has detected windows xp, and I tell it to set up the dual boot, the computer on reboot goes straight into windows xp, with no on-scrteen option shown for choosing debian.

Debian Configuration :: Restoring Boot Record After GRUB Installation?

Mar 11, 2011

I have recently installed Debian alongside Vista on the same boot menu using the GRUB booting device. Only problem is, I couldn't boot Vista at all any more, so I removed my Debian installation from that drive. But the GRUB boot record persists, I don't have the Recovery disk to restore my old system, so I have to find a way to manually remove the GRUB track and put the old record in its place. I assume there was a copy made of it by the installation program, now my only problem is to find that file and copy the content back in place (at the address at the very beginning of the drive) all that by using Linux code, since that is all I have left. Being new to this game, I have no idea how to begin writing the right command for a job like this

Debian :: Restore Original Boot Record After Grub Installation?

Mar 11, 2011

A few days ago I installed my first Linux product, which is Debian 6.0, and I installed the GRUB booting device on my main boot record, as it was suggested that it was a harmless step to take. Unfortunately, some quirk in my system made GRUB believe that I had XP when in fact I have Vista, so the options I have now are to boot Debian or to boot XP which is not on my computer. In other words, I have to get rid of GRUB now, but I'm realizing that he's not such an easy customer to kick out. I have moved my Linux installation to another drive, but the old GRUB always stays in place, and my Vista is stuck there frozen for eternity. So after considering all kinds of possibilities, I have come to the conclusion that the easiest way to restore my original boot record would probably be to find its backup copy that I assume the installation program made, and to copy it back into the right address at the beginning of the disk. I don't have the Vista recovery CD, so I really have to do this manually. So now my questions are these: did the installation program make a copy of the boot track, and if so, where did he put it and under what name, and finally, what command can I use from within the Debian terminal, which is now my only tool left, to copy the content of thesaid file into the first 512 bytes of the hard drive? I know that would be a simple matter for any serious geek, I guess I must be a little rusty. Anybody feel up to it?

Debian :: Bluetooth Device Installed ?

I have a dell vostro 1720, and the specs from dell insist there's a bluetooth adapter installed, and the laptop even has a little light which (ostensibly) indicates data being transmitted via bt... and, it's enabled in the bios.

though, dmesg | grep bluetooth

I've read comments on dell bluetooth for other dists, but can't seem to find any deb-specific recommendations.

So, how do i confirm that this laptop does *in deed* have a bluetooth adapter.. and... if there is one... how do let the kernel know about it?

Debian Configuration :: No Space Left On Device

Mar 15, 2016

Debian Version: 8.3 (Jessie) KDE (although this is NOT a desktop issue)
Basic Hardware:
Gigabyte Motherboard GA-970A-D3P
AMD 8350 CPU (8 cores)
32 GB DDR3 RAM
120GB SSD SATA-6GB/s
750 WD Black SATA-6GB/s

I am getting "Error: No space left on device" regularly during updates or installs, but why. Here is data on the disks, filesystems, etc...

Code: Select all df -h
Filesystem      Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda1        81G   27G   50G  35% /

Seems very doubtful that inodes are the killer.I have googled and followed all the threads, and search these forums and found nothing that fits - every answer there was focused on avaiolable space and inodes..And to make the cheese even more binding, the issue has cropped up on another 8.3 system with far more disk space (larger hard drives) and lots more unused inodes

Code: Select alldf -h

Debian Configuration :: Missing CD / DVD Device In Squeeze

Apr 3, 2010

I've been testing Squeeze to determine whether KDE4 is finally suitable for my primary machine. Everything seems to be working fine except for detection of IDE devices. My CD/DVD drive no longer automounts and the reason seems to be that no device is being created. My Lenny system detects the drive as /dev/hda, but no such device exists in Squeeze. During boot, Squeeze appears to detect the drive as /dev/sr0 (according to dmesg), but in fact that device does not exist either.I'm actually running the Lenny kernel, as I am unable to compile my Ralink wireless driver (rt2860sta) using the Squeeze kernel. Also, for inquiring minds, I use removable HDD drive bays on my systems to simplify testing.

Debian Configuration :: Wireless Not Working With Sid And New Device?

Dec 8, 2010

The computer networking works fine with a normal static setup, but adding a USB wireless device is not successful. It is my own network so the wpa-ssid and wpa-psk are known to work with Lenny and a previous wireless device. The device is recognized (lsusb) and the driver is confirmed to be in the kernel (lsmod). Here is the iwconfig output:

wlan0     IEEE 802.11bgn  ESSID:off/any
Mode:Managed  Access Point: Not-Associated   Tx-Power=20 dBm
Retry  long limit:7   RTS thr:off   Fragment thr:off
Encryption key:off
Power Management:off

After typing: ifconfig wlan0 192.168.1.144 up I can ping that address, but it is not working. I have just done a fresh install of Sid so that I could get the 2.6.35 kernel which contains the ath9k_htc driver for the USB wireless device that I am using. The firmware is ar9271.fw but my source of that is questionable because it does not seem readily available. I am temporarily using a PCMCIA wired connection which is what I am using to connect to the computer via telnet. (This is just for convenience so as to avoid getting up all the time.) Here is the ifconfig output:

eth0      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:40:05:07:d9:11
inet addr:192.168.1.122  Bcast:192.168.1.255  Mask:255.255.255.0
inet6 addr: fe80::240:5ff:fe07:d911/64 Scope:Link

[code]...

That file works with the previous USB wireless device under Lenny. Am I doing something wrong or is the driver and firmware just not up to snuff yet?
