Ubuntu :: Wireless Adapter Stopped Working?
Jul 26, 2011
Yesterday I installed many updates on my compaq presario cq60-214dx running ubuntu 11.04.
This morning my 2 year old son was pressing buttons, generally playing with the notebook. When he was done the wireless stopped working. I cannot get it to come back on. What could he have possibly done without entering the password.
I have restarted several times. ifconfig does not show the wireless adapter. iwconfig says its not active. i turned on txpower using iwconfig but still nothing.

I use Fedora now for 2 days and all worked fine, but now I have a problem:My wireless internet doesn't work anymore. Normally I see a icon at topbar that tells me I'm connected but now it doesn't.I connected my laptop to my router directly and downloaded WiFi radar to see if that works. That program says: "Not connected".I'm sure the internet card is connected and the switch on my laptop is on. I only deleted BlueTooth, but I don't think that's the problem.

I've been using Windows all my life (and still have to use it at work) but I made the big leap yesterday and installed Ubuntu on my personal machine (at last). With my "Windows-centric" mind, there are a million things that I still don't get, but I must say the community and forums look quite impressive and easy to access (kudos! ). I am testing this today! My current problem is with the wireless adapter. I have a Belkin N Wireless USB adapter (FSD8053v3) and Belkin, of course, doesn't make linux drivers. When I installed Ubuntu, it recognized it automatically and I could connect to my network, but navigation was very slow so I tried to install Belkin windows drivers using ndiswrapper. It worked immediately, and navigation was very fast. However after a reboot, I lost the connection, I can't even see any of the neighbouring networks.

Anybody know how to get pictures off of one? I've got a computer with XP, but the software doesn't want to work. I've tried setting it up in a VM, but VirtualBox won't patch the camera through for some reason. The SD card adapter it came with stopped working, so that's a no-go.

I have somehow messed up my network (onboard) card in the process of configuring network settings. how I managed to do so is that I did not use ifdown before making changes to my "/etc/network/interfaces" file. Also I think it might be relevant to mention that the sshd was running -although with no active connections at that time- since I have the service installed on my 10.04 Ubuntu Server (x64). So step by step what I did to end up with no network connection:
1) sudo cp /etc/network/interfaces ~/myfiles/interfaces.original
2) chmod 444 interfaces.original
3) sudo nano /etc/network/interfaces and then applied my network settings (IP, netmask, etc.). The syntax and configuration of my "interfaces" file is without flaw since it was simple, typical and was assigning my up to then DHCP assigned IP of 192.168.2.3 to static.
At about that point and although "ifconfig" showed the changes had been applied as planned the network card stopped working. I could no longer ping anyone but myself and the leds both on my network adapter and on my switch were turned off. Since my configuration also has a Windows 7 installation I rebooted to Windows in hope of troubleshooting through device manager but I got an error code 10 which means that the adapter could not start. Did I fry my network adapter for good and for all or I still have a chance of repairing it?
PS: After a closer look I saw that the NIC's LEDs indicate that the device cannot start. I am considering to reboot my MB as a last resort since the NIC is an onboard device and changing BIOS settings has done nothing to restore it.

I am running Fedora 14. I've had an ASUS wireless adapter working for a few months now, with no problems. Today, I installed updates, one of which required a computer reboot (not just logging out and back in). I rebooted the computer, and when it came back up, the wireless adapter did not work. The adapter is visible after lsusb, but there is no wireless showing after iwconfig. What happened? How do I fix it?

When originally installing 11.04 I had problems getting my Ralink 5390 wireless card to work.
Today my computer froze completely and I had to turn it off via the power switch. When I turned it back on, wireless was no longer recognized! My iPod can connect to the network just fine, so it must be an Ubuntu problem. There are no problems with my ethernet connection either.
I researched this and found several threads about blocking and unblocking wireless devices using the rfkill command. Well, unfortunately for me the rfkill command doesn't work. When I type sudo rfkill list or sudo rfkill unblock all, nothing happens; it just returns me to my bash prompt. I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling rfkill...nothing.

The wireless on my 64-bit openSUSE-11.2 installed on my Dell Studio 1537 laptop stopped working some time back (possibly more than a one or two months back). I just discovered this last week when on business. I have not used the wireless under openSUSE-11.2 for a while so I am not certain what broke it, but I am suspicious of an update. I note openSUSE-11.3 milestone-7 works great with the wireless (on a liveCD). I note possibly two related threads, although I note no failed request for firmware in my case:request for firmware file 'iwlwifi-5000-2.ucode' failed [INTEL 5300 AGN] [OPENSUSE 11.2] - openSUSE Forums, and I see another thread here: Suddenly No Wireless Network Card - openSUSE Forums... but I can not tell if what I have is the same problem, so I did not add to those threads. In my case I can scan for the network, and see the SSID. An ip address is assigned. But a ping does not work.
Some details, the wireless is:
Code:
04:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 5300 AGN [Shiloh] Network Connection [8086:4235]
Subsystem: Intel Corporation Device [8086:1121]
Kernel driver in use: iwlagn
In terms of installed apps:
Code:
rpm -qa '*wireless*'
wireless-tools-30.pre8-5.1.x86_64
wireless-regdb-2009.09.08-2.2.noarch
[code]....
I know the router wireless network is good, because I can connect to the router via wireless with another laptop (old Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo 7400M with older Intel wireless), and the router wireless also works with this Dell Studio 1537 PC (with same hardware) but with openSUSE-11.3 milestone7 version.

So I bought a linksys wireless-g usb adapter for my desktop because I don't want an ethernet cable running halfway around my house to the router (the router can't move from that location).
it comes with a windows setup disc which i obviously can't use in linux so i just plugged it in and hoped for the best. It seems to turn on, the little light flashes, and I tried connecting to my wireless network in the network manager (using 10.04, gnome), but it just seems to be retrying to connect and every 5 minutes it asks me for the password which I've given it already.

As the title reads. My wireless adapter does not work when I boot from the Ubuntu 10.04 LiveCD. The adapter in question... tricky. It's this one: [URL]...- however, aside from a mention in one of the comments to a "Ralink RT2780", I don't see any reference to a make/model.
The software that ships with this product is indeed Ralink-branded, but again there's no mention of a specific make/model. So I assume it's just a driver issue, however I've no idea where to begin in my search for one as I can't identify its model number.

I have been searching for days on end trying to get my machine to detect my Netgear WG111T wireless adapter...and I've gotten absolutely nowhere at all. Most tutorials suggest I use ndigstk(sp?), which allows me to use Windows drivers for my adapter. I've been told many times to use the wg111t.inf file, but all I've been able to come up with is the w11t.inf file. Whenever I start up the Windows Wireless Drivers application, I usually get a popup which tells me "Unable to see if Hardware is detected"--yet when I hit the OK prompt, next to the w11t.inf file, it says "Hardware detected --Yes", yet I still have gotten nowhere. I grasp some basics of Linux, but overall I'm still pretty new to it--and I have a big headache from the whole thing.
EDIT: I forgot to mention, my install is 9.04, so if 9.10 resolves this, how would I go about upgrading without downloading an ENTIRELY new disc (I have a horrid internet connection, it'd take HOURS to download the 699MB ISO, so perhaps make that a last resort)

I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.4 on my Dell Inspiron 6400 yesterday (32-bit). Everything was running great, but when I turned it on today my wireless adapter is no longer working and the hardware switch doesn't do anything. It's working in Windows fine so it can't be the hardware. Here is some information:
Adapater name: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG [Golan] Network Connection (rev 02)
Code:
iwconfig:
wlan0 IEEE 802.11abg ESSID:off/any[code]....
Restarting the network with 'sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart' didn't work.I've tried Ubuntu several times before but usually there is one small issue which makes me go back to Windows. I love 10.4 so I hope I can get this working so I can stay on Ubuntu!

pulled the wireless USB adapter out of the back of my laptop when I was using it. I plugged it back in and it can see my wireless network, but it can't connect. Everytime it tries, it just shows the connecting icon on the top bar for a few minutes and then says that the network has been disconnected.
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the USB adaptor, but nothing I've done seems able to fix the issue. Anyone know how to fix this?
The USB adaptor I'm using is a Trendnet TEW-424UB

Just recently the wireless stopped working on Ubuntu 10.04. The machine is AcerOne AOA-150. I did notice recently the wireless would stop working, and I would need to either 1) reboot 2) switch the wireless off by moving the switch from left to right in front of the laptop.
However, this time nothing is working. I've provided some detail and if more information is needed, let me know.

My wireless mouse stopped working about a week after i bought it. i replaced the batteries, and tried restarting my computer. I also tried putting the receiver in all of the other usb ports, to no avail. Where is the driver software that was installed when the receiver was plugged in located on my computer? I plan to un-install this and hope that it works when it is installed again.

A couple days ago I booted up my Ubuntu 10.10 machine as usual, but the wired LAN connection did not work; it doesn't seem to see any wired connection devices. I can still connect to a wireless network with no problem, and if I plug that same ethernetable into another machine it works fine. I've been happily using this setup for weeks; the LAN only stopped working a day or two ago. So I figure there's two possibilities:A recent update caused NetworkManager to stop working with wired LAN connections, but I'm e only persothed affected (unlikely)My motherboard's ethernet port died (this motherboard only a couple weeks old, so this also seems unlikely)I'm not good at diagnosing problems with networking, so who can tell me where to st

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04. I was happily connected to internet and surfing some forum, when wireless connection suddenly stopped working.
Now I can't find any access point, and I'm pretty sure I didn't do anything to justify this behaviour.
It already happened a month ago, but I had to format my drive, so I didn't really bother to try to solve the problem.
Anyway. I'm posting here the results of the commands I think I can help with a diagnosis; if something else is needed.
I'm using a different computer to post this thread, so I'm manually writing the output.
Code:
sudo iwconfig wlan0
wlan 0 IEEE 802.11bg ESSID: off/any
Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associated Tx-Power=20 dBm
Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
Encryption key:off
Power Management:off
sudo iwlist wlan0 scan
wlan0 No scan results

About a week ago I upgraded to Maverick from Lucid.
All networking worked fine on Lucid.
I am using an Acer Laptop with the Atheros AR928X Wireless Network Adapter.
I can connect to my home network (visible, with WPA2-Personal) fine. However, I cannot connect to my university's wireless network. The only difference I noticed is that its network is using WPA2 Entreprise with Tunneled TLS Authentication and MSCHAPv2.
I tried dmesg and I got:
wlan0: authenticate with 00:1a:1e:ef:f4:e1 (try 1)
wlan0: authenticated
wlan0: associate with 00:1a:1e:ef:f4:e1 (try 1)
wlan0: RX AssocResp frin 00:1a:1e:ef:f4:e1 (capab=0x431 status=0 aid=2)
[Code].....
Unless the driver has changed, I suspect this is not a driver issue, since it worked fine on Lucid. Is this a NetworkManager issue?

I have a HP Mini 5105 SSD netbook, runing Ubuntu 10.10 with 2Gb RAM. My wireless card is a Broadcom BCM43224 802.11a/b/g/n. Its driver is enabled and running. The wired network connection runs fine too. The problem: Wireless stopped working. When I right click on the network icon, the enable network option is clicked, but the "enable wireless" option is listed in dark grey and cannot be clicked on. I have recently updated my kernel version to 2.6.35-24-generic. What I have already tried: this one too I got to know there seems to be a problem with the 2.6.35-24-generic kernel. I have gone into the GRUB menu (it took some time to find out that you have to keep the Shift key pressed during startup for the GRUB menu to show), chosen the older kernel version (2.6.35-23-generic) and then removed the faulty one. Nevertheless, nothing has changed. I still cannot enable the wireless. The outcome to lshw -C network is:
