Networking :: Can't Get Wireless Working In Slitaz (Asus Aspire ZG5, Atheros Wifi)?
Sep 17, 2010
So I decided to wipe out Windows and try Slitaz. It's an awesome well featured distro for it's size. One huge problem tho: I can't get wireless to work for the life of me. I actually went as far as to manually load the ath5k module but It just refuses to recognize my wireless router, much less any nearby routers. It simply doesn't see anything when it scans for wireless networks. I have no problem with that in Puppy Lucid. But I'd really like to use Slitaz, just for it's small size and quick bootup. Can anyone PLEASE help me with that?
PS: It happened here before that I had to plea and beg for any response, so PLEASE(!!) don't let me hang like that this time.

Ok, so I upgraded my acer aspire one to the new Ubuntu 10, and at first everything was working fine, except the audio. Now, for some reason, my wireless and ethernet ports have died. I can't get online by either method. I can do ifconfig <device> up and it will show up if i do iwconfig or ifconfig, but the wireless isn't associated with the AP. Currently I'm trying to load some drivers for my atheros card, and we'll see how that works outReally I was wondering, how come the modules don't load at boot time, and how can I fix this? I've been a Linux user for quite sometime, however I've been more of end user

I am currently using Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx. Although it has worked fine for the past couple of weeks, I have recently encountered a problem with my wireless card. It is an Atheros AR928X card on a Toshiba satellite U405D-S2874 model laptop. Recently, I attempted to put the computer into suspend mode for the first time. The computer failed to wake up, and I performed a hard reboot. After this, everything seems to work except for the wireless card. I am now unable to connect to any wireless network with my laptop, and the wireless manager doesn't seem to be working either.

Previously my wifi has worked just fine in 10.04, but as of recently I keep losing my connection after leaving my laptop on for a while (and this happens sooner and sooner each time, used to be daily, now it's every few hours), I can no longer see any networks at all, and I have to reboot to get it working again. I haven't even installed or removed any packages lately, so I'm not such what might've caused this to break all of a sudden.

I spent days trying to figure out how to get my atheros AR928x 802.11n wireless card to work in Ubuntu. The card worked perfect in Windows 7 but the connection kept dropping in Ubuntu. It would find my router and connect with 60% signal for about 5 seconds, then fall down to about 25% signal and then cut out altogether. After searching for days to find a solution, I finally figured it out and figured Id post it here to let everyone else in the same boat have a working wireless too!
I found this solution from:[URL].. This solution is for JAUNTY (Ubuntu 9.04), so if you are running Jaunty, you can just follow that post. If you are using Karmic (Ubuntu 9.1), you can follow this tutorial I'm posting. It's pretty simple: First, make sure you got all your files up to date. Type in a terminal:
sudo apt-get update Let that run, and once its done, type into terminal:
sudo apt-get upgrade
Once that finished, restart your computer. Again open up terminal and type:
sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-karmic
If you are using Jaunty, instead of karmic type in jaunty, if you use another version of ubuntu, you can find a list of versions and their names here:[URL].. Restart your computer one more time, and you should be good to go! This has been tested and confirmed to work on: -Ubuntu 9.1(karmic) with an Atheros 928x 802.11n wireless card, using the Ubuntu installed network software, in a Gateway NV53 laptop connected to a belkin 802.11n wireless router.-HP base station / 802.11g airport express
This has been tested and does not work/has issues with:
-airport extreme I hope this works for you too, and if it does, please let me know with your hardware and Ubuntu version so I can post here what other setups have been confirmed to let this work.

Does Ubuntu 10.04RC support Atheros AR2427 wireless card out of the box? I ran 10.04RC Netbook Live on my new Asus Eee 1001P Netbook today and it looks very impressive indeed. However, I could not get Ubuntu 10.04 to even see the Etheros AR2427 card (iwconfig). Am I doing something wrong or is there no driver to support the card? If no driver what are my options to get it working under 10.04 as I do not want to use Windows on my netbook..

lspci gives this for my ethernet hardware:

I have tried installing "linux-backports-modules-wireless-2.6.32-22-preempt" but I receive a notification that it failed to install properly upon rebooting... I have also tried installing compat-wireless but it fails to make because it can't find the linux kernel header directory...(I do have the headers, but how do I get the makefile to see a non-default header dir?) sudo modprobe ath9k runs, but running sudo ifconfig wlan0 up returns this error:

I upgraded to Maverick Meerkat on my Compaq Presario CQ60 and the installation bugged killing all the documents and settings. I'm not a total n00by to Linux as I've been using it for years, but neither am I an advanced user.
Any halp you can give with this as I've tried everything I can think of to get the wireless card to work. Which basically boils down to trawling Google for the drivers and attempting to install them. code...

I have a Toshiba MX35 laptop it's a little old but does the job. I'm have a problem getting the wireless to work. I can boot a live CD either Ubuntu 10.10 or Fedora 14 and they will see the wireless card. The card is Atheros Communications Inc. Atheros AR5001X+ Wireless Network Adapter (rev 01).
I have Ubuntu 9.10 installed and that is the OS that is having the problem seeing the wireless. The computer will not handle Ubuntu 10.10 (at least it won't handle the desktop effects under Ubuntu 10.10) but handles them just fine under 9.10 and that's why I have 9.10 installed. I really need the Wifi to work because I'm going to travel in a few days.

This bug has been around for years now?!? Surely this can be fixed by now, would somebody please feel this very common issue. I've installed Ubuntu 11.04 on my Acer Aspire One 110AB netbook and everything seems to work fine except the wireless - I can connect via ethernet no problem.
While the wireless can scan for networks - it seems them but they seem to be rather weak signals and also no matter never connect UNLESS I turn off ALL WEP/WPA security clearly not an option.

I had UBR installed and working fine for a month or so, wireless and everything. Then I did a clean re-install while trying to add WinXP to half of my drive.Anyway, with the new install, my wireless chip (BCM4312 802.11b/g) isn't switching on at all. I've tried installing the Broadcom driver that appears when I run Hardware Drivers, but that doesn't help. With the old install, the wireless switch and indicator light on the front of the netbook worked, now nothing.
Output from lshw -C network is:

I have a new installation of Ubuntu 10.10 on my Aspire 1640Z, and since I have it, it's impossible to connect it to the web. I have a wireless connection on a SFR Neufbox (I'm french and it's a french box I guess). I've tried to be connected with a Sagem key. I have another computer with Windows XP, which is connected wireless with the same kind of key. When I use Network Manager, there isn't any automatic connection : "no network connection" and when I click on the logo of Network Manager, I can't click neither on "<<filaire>> network" nor "wireless network".
I also used Wifi-Radar, but there isn't any connection again. I created a new network on it, with the SSIF, code WPA, MAC.. But there's no connection and when I try "connect" it writes "could not get IP adress" (even if I'm in DHCP). I went to Systme > Administration > Network Tools > Priphriques > Interface ethernet (eth1) > Configurer > Wireless and I've writen the WPA, SSIF etc. again of my box, without any result. Here is what I have in the terminal with

i installed ubuntu on my netbook after having a successful install on my asus g51 laptop.
everything works fine except the wireless. for some reason the netbook wont pick up internet via the ethernet connection so i went and got the drivers via synaptic and copied the packages plus the dependencies required (just needed one - dkms). dkms installed fine, but there was an error when i tried to install bcmwl-kernel-source. ubuntu still sees it as installed tho looking in ubuntu software center.
i rebooted just for shits and giggles, cuz it still didnt work. no dice. then i tried to check in that section that shows drivers that arent allowed in a default install as per another thread. its not in there.
my situation doesnt let me connect this netbook via wire and the only way i can get software for it is to download it via my ubuntu connection on my laptop.

having problems with wireless on my old Asus A2500H laptop, NetworkManager applet keeps the "enable wireless" greyed out and gives a "Wireless is disabled" for each wirelss network card. The wireless cards in this laptop are:
Code:
00:0c.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4303 802.11b Wireless LAN Controller (rev 02)
02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR2413 802.11bg NIC (rev 01)
It does look like the network interface come up fine as well:
Code:
wlan0 IEEE 802.11b ESSID:off/any
Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associated Tx-Power=off
[Code]....
Of course the easy solution would be to just flick that hardware switch on, however there isn't any hardware button only a indicator light, which is off unfortunately.
Any clues to get wifi up? Also tried another pcmcia card but same problem, card is recognized but still "Wireless is disabled".

I have a 6 month old Acer (sorry not Asus as per the heading) Aspire laptop. I downloaded Ubuntu and cannot connect via wireless. It works fine via ethernet. Having spent several hour reading this forum, other web pages and the help file, I actually still have not got a clue either as to what the actual problem is or how to begin solving it. Is there a simple answer? If not, I'll go back to windows 7 as Ubuntu seems anything but the promises made.

Making it impossible to get anything done. its been like this for a while, i figured it was a bug in 10.10 and ignored it since 11.04 was coming soon. And with windows everything is fine. I'm getting very sick of this. Can somebody please help me? If you need more info, just let me know.

My wireless worked out of the box for the past few months. When I was running low on battery recently, I put the laptop to sleep. When I woke it up, there was a black screen with a flashing underscore. I pressed a bunch of buttons but nothing happened. Then suddenly it said something about a wireless hardware error and I did a hard reset by holding down the power button. When I turned the computer back on, wireless was greyed out. There's no hardware switch to enable and disable wireless and the software switch had no effect. I tried echoing into the 'state' of the adapter but it didn't let me. When I tried sudo ifconfig wlan0 up it gave me the following error:
Code:

Im a Linux newbie and am running OpenSuse 11.3 (Gnome, 2.6.34.7-0.5-desktop Kernel) and Ive an Asus N13 wifi dongle (linux compatible). I currently connect using my laptopś internal wifi but I bought the dongle due to trouble with weak signal. It came with some sort of code that can be "compiled" but I havent got a clue how to do that (and I have been researching this matter for quite some time now). I then came across a post where someone with the same USB stick created and added only two small files to his filesystem and it worked...for him (maybe becasuse he was on a different Distro )
Ralink RT2870 USB Stick and created the two files mentioned in the post (network_drivers.rules and network_drivers.conf) and placed them in ETC... etc, etc! I rebooted the system but NetworkManager only lists it as "device not ready" ... So now back to square one.

Just moved from Mandriva 2010.1 to Ubuntu 10.10 and am having problems with the wifi. It connects fine, but tends to grind to a halt every now and then. I always have this problem with Ubuntu... hence me migrating to Mandriva in the past. My card uses the Atheros AR5007G Wifi chipset. So, using ndiswrapper, I installed the windows drivers. Everything seemed to go okay. Yet, after a restart, I'm having the same problem. Which makes me think I'm still using the same old driver. So I added blacklist ath_hal and blacklist ath_pci to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf. Restarted. And I'm still having drop-out problems.
