I already posted a topic about this but i got wrongly interpreted as someone gave me a link to a topic to restore your audio fully, which isn't necessairy, as I AM able to play music through rythmbox, on dvd's, on ........ but not on games.
I have a conexant Hi-Def audio on a HP laptop here, and when i typed in the code 'aplay -l' in the terminal, i got this:

As you can see my conexantaudio driver is listed, but it does not seem to work with games.. I have 9.10 and in 9.04 it did work..
I switched to Linux but I was, and still am a gamer, and I have been trying to get some of my favorites to run on Linux as well as find Linux native games. While this hasn't been hard, I have run into a sort of Brick wall. I'll get games to start, but there will be no sound at all. The game runs fine though. When I try to close the game, it crashes/freezes.
This has puzzled me because some games that display this bug now did not previously, and at first this only occurred on one game. Now it occurs on all games. I've checked around, found a few similar bugs, but the closest people seem to get to fixing it is "just uninstall pulseaudio and use something else". It only happens in games, music and other sound works fine.
As for specs, I must say I'm fairly ignorant of some things, but getting better, here is what I do know. Mint 8 Nvidia graphics card (can't recall what model) Gnome Desktop
Graphics are fine, but the audio for my 3d games (trigger, TORCS, tuxcart) work for about a minute, and then start making really annoying crackly sounds, and then cuts out over all. Running Kubuntu 9.10 Karmic koala, dual booting with vista. Dedicated 30gigs to Linux. Installed with wubi. Works fine on vista.
I am having sound issues while playing some games under WINE. for this I will use World of Warcraft as it has options for different sound engines. The problem is that I will have sound running fine for a while after a fresh reboot. It will seem fine for a good half hour to an hour and then suddenly it will stop. It will still be present in the applications list in sound preferences listed as 'ALSA plug-in [wine-preloader]'. muting/unmuting and adjusting the slider has no effects. Enabling and disabling sound in the game also has no effects. Here is what I have tried thus far to try to remedy it:
tried all of the various sound options in winecfg (some simply don't produce any sound at all on a fresh reboot - OSS, for instance) tried with and without padsp tried the various sound engines in Config.wtf tried WINE from the Ubuntu repositories and the developer's PPA tried lowering the sample rate and the bits per sample in the audio tab of winecfg tried fiddling with the sound preferences applications controls I am not adventurous enough to try to install OSSv4 so that doesn't seem like an option for me. it is important to note that sounds not coming from WINE function as normal even while WINE is producing no sounds.
My problem is I downloaded a bunch of games, some work fine, others have no sound, others have sound for a while then have buzzing,screeching noises and can go mute and some of the games freeze. About 7 out of 10 games have this problem. I also have compiz fusion with full animations running with the globe and everything else is running smooth and fine. My computer has a intel media graphics card and its 1.73 ghz celeron processor with 1.5 gigs of ram. This is all just a big issue with games and other programs are fine.

I installed Debian lenny amd64 a couple days ago and I have only got a few things figured out thus far. I got libdvdcss, and adobe flash along with some neat little games and apps. Well I had no sound at all because I couldn't get my audigy ls working with lenny so I'm useing my onboard sound (a realtek). I changed all my sound options to ALC 880 Analog now I have sound for movies and mp3's but not in games or on the web (ie ....., farmville).
It seems like it's mostly an issue with playing games. When I play certain 3D games, the audio may work for a little while, but will start getting scratching or full of static. Some times it's a lot, and other times it's just a little bit. Most times, the sound in the game will stop working after a short moment of static/scratchy sound. Then I am left with complete silence.I've seen on other posts that PCM volume may be turned up all the way. I wasn't sure what PCM was, but in the volume controls, I saw that you could adjust each individual application's volume. I assumed that this was PCM, as the game's volume was all the way up.I turned it down some, and I still got some static in the sound, and the sound still disappeared completely after a short time.
I am using 10.04 64-bit on a GA-770TA-UD3 motherboard with onboard Realtek ALC888 audio chip. I'm having scratchy sound with games like World of goo and Penumbra. I solved the problem for Penumbra by selecting OSS option instead of ALSA from the settings menu but I'dont have that option in World of goo (and many other games).I have no problem with video or audio files. I'm running Lucid 10.04, kernel 2.6.32-26, 64-bit, Intel 3400 series chipset. Whenever I run Hedgewars and The Mana World, the volume fluctuates really fast, and the sound applet flashes. A friend of mine gave me a few .iso games that will work just from the computer...not using a cd drive. I figured out how to do it in windows, it was pretty easy, but in ubuntu its not as easy. I got some tips on how to mount...and after some experimenting i got it to work. So i installed Morrowind thru Wine. And it starts the opening screen just fine (where you can pick "Play" "Options" etc.) But when i click play it gives me an error that it cant find a cd drive on my computer...because i use a netbook. why this is happening since i have it mounted. Also i am trying to use PlayOnLinux, since ive heard it is good at auto fixing problems that youd have to manually fix thru Wine, and id like to be able to run Morrowind thru that if possible.
I recently changed from Gentoo to Debian Squeeze. All went fine but I have an ALSA issue. I have an AMD Athlon II X4 board with a Nvidia (Realtek) sound chip. After installing I got a lot of "no such device" errors, so I installed the Realtek driver the Debian way and the errors vanished. I could successful run alsactl init and alsamixer.
At this point there is no sound neither in games nor system. alsaplay says (on the screen) that it is playing a wav file but there is no sound. My test ''dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/dsp'' complains "/dev/dsp : no such file or directory". Well, all clear. modprobing the snd-*-oss modules brings sound alive but I have to do this after every restart. I have no clue how to make this persistent the Debian way.
I just got my hands on an MSI E7235-295US and slapped Ubuntu 9.10 on it. So far everything's worked great, but I am beginning to get a bit concerned about my sound quality. The laptop itself has 5 speakers + subwoofer so I should be getting 5.1 sound, if I understand things correctly (the newegg link should provide more details) and when I play anything (music, flash, videos, games, etc...) the sound comes out 'muffled'. Almost as if it is in a concert hall, maybe. I initially wondered if the problem is related to the 5 speakers and if the sound is initially only setup for two. If that is the case, nothing I've done has seemed to made any real difference. I've tried changing the master/pci channels, but it only hides it a little, and doesn't solve the problem.
This seemed to be on the right track, but the laptop is still really new and not listed in the alsa file.

I have in the past few months managed to get several people to switch to Linux just on the merits of its educational programs and games alone. Many people who are interested in educational programs for their children do not know where to find them for windows, and even when they do find them, they cost money, and might be worth nothing. So, i started looking into this on Linux, and did only minimal research on the available programs and games that are educational. I wound up already building 3 new computers that use Fedora, and getting several other people who already have a computer to switch to Fedora, just by making a video on how to use most of the educational programs that are available. This made it easier for those people to learn how to use the programs, especially for those that are not that intuitive, and it also showed them just what was available. [URL]
My children use the Webkinz web site for fun and games. The site works with other LINUX OS (Ubuntu) , but I can not get it working with Fedora 12 or 13, 64 bit. I have installed flash from the [URL] Fedora wiki and flash works (I have tried both 32 and 64 bit versions). The webkinz site loads, but none of the buttons or games work (Try using the log in button, a new window should open asking for user name and password).
Playing a song works at first; then it quits after 1-5 minutes. If you select a different output device, it will work for another 1-5 minutes, but switching back to an already used up device will not play sound. Running 'sudo killall pulseaudio' resets everything and each output device works for another 1-5 minutes. This is on on 9.10.
The sound stopped working on my Macbook Pro 1,1. It was working fine before, and I can't think of any changes I made that would make it stop working. I know it's not a hardware problem because the Apple sound plays when I turn on the computer. Everything is unmuted in ALSA Mixer. None of the hardware options in Sound Preferences produce sound. Plugging in headphones or speakers does not solve the problem. I'm using 10.10.One curiosity: Whenever I do something that would normally cause sound to play, the optical audio red light in the headphone jack turns on, but no sound plays.
my computer after being updated a few months back lost its ability to make noise. the sound and volume settings see no input (i have an internal mic) or out put (speakers) hardware. they see no sound hardware at all. im running this on a sager so im assuming its an intel HDA audio thing. is there a package where i could report this bug?
I just upgrade my fedora 11 to fedora 12 using the dvd and upgrade setup. I know that there is Fedora 13 released however now I`m with fedora 12. My problem was with sound. Sometimes the sound is working, sometimes it is not working. Here is the information for my PC:

however If i killall pulseaudio or kill -9 PID of pulseaudio, pulse audio starts again and sound is working. I do not know every time when my sound goes off to kill the pulseaudio.

I have both Windows 7 and Ubuntu installed on my laptop. Since the last few days my sound in Ubuntu is not at all functioning when it works just alright on windows.
I have a desktop pc which is running Ubuntu 9.10, and for some apparent reason I am not getting sound from my sound card. No error message is coming from o/s, I have checked the sound card with head phones, still no sound.Now, I have checked my sound card, because on the same desktop pc, I have another hard drive, which runs Windows XP Professional, and my sound card works perfectly! Please note that I have two hard drives on my pc, one for Ubuntu and the other for XP. So, there is no conflict on operating systems.Does anyone know how I can resolve my sound problem - my sound card is a Creative Audigy 2 Sound Blaster.
I recently noticed that when I boot up ubuntu it no longer plays the cool startup music. I think it may have something to do with me removing these packages in synaptic package manager because they were interferring with my sound in total annihilation for spring. Most of the packages below were reinstalled because my sound icon disappeared and I had to reinstall them. But are any one of these packages responsible for the ubuntu boot up sound?
I have just installed 9.10, unfortunately sound is not working. I have an 275 gtx video card that is connected via HDMI cable. The spdif is connected via the motherboard and video card.
I haven't do any updates so it shouldn't be anything wrong with the system...Even after restarting my comp, it still won't work.I was plugging in my earphones to the jack last night as I didn't want to disturb my family while watching starcraft 2 commentaries...So this morning i plug it out and wanted to use my speaker and it don't work anymore...it was working fine all the time...so is there any way using the earphone might have cause the problem?
I'm using Lucid and after some update my sound indicator got vanished.And now it doesn't show any any controls ( buttons) while some track playinging in rhythmbox or anyother audio player.
I've been using Ubuntu for several months now. The sound was working just fine until now. I installed an update I put off that came 9/20/10. I restarted and my sound no longer works. The speakers built into the laptop doesn't work nor do the headphones. I tried going to the preferences to fix it, but my sound card info wasn't there anymore. Dummy Output was in my Output. I've been searching frantically for a solution but found none. I think my driver has been uninstalled some how but I'm not sure. I recently isntalled Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid on my HP Compaq Presario CQ42. Recently being around two to three weeks ago. The first day I had it I didnt have sound due to my alsa version not being updated to 1.0.23 (something like that, i just know .23 was the version i upgraded to) and then along with another fix this solved my audio problem. There were a few issues with the audio after that, such as vlc and other app sounds not working after playing audio in a browser, requiring (as far as i know) a restart every time. This wasnt a big deal and i was getting around to finding out how to fix it but then today...
While at school I closed my laptop lid (as i usually do), but when i opened it again the screen flicked back and forth between some screens that usually show at boot (not bios, something else). Then Ubuntu told me that it didnt detect any of my drivers and that i should start in low graphics mode, and i did, but i made sure to select the just for this session option. I think this may have happened because I was running on low bat at the time but i cant be sure. When i restarted it booted up normally, and graphics and everything were back to normal except...Since that happened my audio has not been working at all. The sound icon is still in the notification panel but there is nothing next to it, eg. volume level.
