Debian :: Getting Duplicate Source Error When Update
Apr 15, 2011
I'm sometimes getting a 'duplicate source' error when I update, but not always. Sometimes it's just fine, without me having changed anything significant. To be honest I don't really understand what's going on.
Here's my sources.list :
deb [URL] testing main
deb-src [URL] testing main
deb [URL] testing main contrib
deb-src [URL] testing main contrib
deb [URL] testing main non-free
deb-src [URL] testing main non-free .....
Whats with the duplicate sources referring to /var/lib...? I've never touched that directory. Ever. And why are there three 'duplicates' of testing/main when clearly I only have two in sources.list? I'm confused. Is my sources.list set up properly? Usually, running another update immediately after the first one cleans up the errors, but this keeps coming back every few days.

[rant]Ok, I've been ignoring this for a couple of months, but now it's gotten to me and I want to know what's causing it.[/rant] Here's my problem. I have scim 1.4-9 (latest) installed for Japanese input. It works fine. I have no problems with it. However, when I launch Synaptic or update manager a duplicate instance of scim starts. This is on Debian Squeeze. See below:
Fresh reboot:
Code:
scim-bridge 34.2MIB
scim-helper-manager 32.7MIB
scim-launcher x2 47.8MIB, 165.4MIB
scim-panel-gtk 153.2MIB
After launching Synaptic or Update manager:
B signifies before as above
Code:
B scim-bridge 34.2MIB
scim-bridge 34.2MIB
B scim-helper-manager 32.7MIB
scim-helper-manager 32.8MIB
[code].....
It's not a huge deal, because when I close said programs, the duplicate process stop. I just find it odd because these are the only two programs that seem to cause it. Oh, and I'm using Gnome, if that matters.

I used to be able to resolve this problem by simply opening my sources.list file and doing a search and delete, but now Ubuntu appears to have two completely different methods of handling sources. What is is the simple solution? I would really like to have everything all in one place.
Code:
W: Duplicate sources.list entry http://ppa.launchpad.net karmic/main Packages (/var/lib/apt/lists/ppa.launchpad.net_sunab_ppa_ubuntu_dists_karmic_main_binary-i386_Packages)
W: Duplicate sources.list entry http://ppa.launchpad.net karmic/main Packages (/var/lib/apt/lists/ppa.launchpad.net_mozillateam_firefox-stable_ubuntu_dists_karmic_main_binary-i386_Packages)
W: You may want to run apt-get update to correct these problems

When opening "Update-manager" I get this error:
E:Malformed line 47 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list (dist parse)
What I was trying to do was update my Opera web browser, when I tried, Ubuntu told me that I was attempting to download from an unauthenticated source, I checked the software sources list and Opera was in there, so I deleted it and re-added it, I must have done it wrong because after closing out and refreshing "Update-manager" it gave me the error above and closed. So now I can't update anything.

What happens if I update Debian Squeeze from Lenny's source.list?A step by step manual is written on Lenny, and if I change lenny to squeeze things seem to not work. When I update the squeeze from the original source.list and then change to the source.list that manual uses things are working. But if I were to start squeeze with lenny's source.list I am getting error while trying to do this:
apt-get install wget mc zip unzip bzip2 ntp ntpdate lsb-release.

I'm trying to install the calculator Qalculate from source so I download the tar.gz package for KDE from their official website to my ~/Downloads folder. I unzipped it with
Code: Select all tar xzf qalculate-kde-0.9.7.tar.gz
I moved the exploded folder to my /home/guest/ folder (my user-name is guest), I entered the qalculate-kde-0.9.7 folder and searched for a INSTALL or README file. Here's what the INSTALL file says to do. The INSTALL file says to run the following commands
Code: Select all./configure
Code: Select allmake
Code: Select allmake install
Code: Select allmake clean
After giving the first command, trouble started; here's what I got:
Code: Select allroot@aliquis:/home/guest/qalculate-kde-0.9.7# ./configure
checking build system type... i686-pc-linux-gnu
checking host system type... i686-pc-linux-gnu
checking target system type... i686-pc-linux-gnu
checking for a BSD-compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c
checking for -p flag to install... yes
[Code] .....
This is impossible, as I am running a fully functioning kde system. What should I do? I don't find the kde version of Qalculate in Apper...

I have added the following line in sources.list, deb [URL] squeeze main non-free
Running apt-get update i get this error message,
Reading package lists... Done
W: GPG error: http://www.debian-multimedia.org squeeze Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 123456789
Do i need to generate this public key 123456789 ? If so, how?
Running apt-key update has not solved the problem.
apt-get install debian-archive-keyring was a recommended solution from some googling.
I have also read this page, [URL] , but how to add a key is under construction.

My computer: 3 year old cheapish box, Gigabyte board with onboard video and sound. Cat5 cabled to Linksys wired router to a cable modem. Debian 6.0 Stable. Network installation.
This didn't happen from the initial installation but I now get an error message each time I get the updates.
I first see the red update notification icon top right of Gnome desktop. I click on it, enter root password at prompt. Click the install updates button on the update manager window. The software progress bars show me the download progress but then I get the following errors.
An error has occurred and installing has been aborted. Error Message: subprocess installed post installation script returned error exit status 1
Error message: dependency problems - leaving unconfigured.
I cancel the messages. The notification icon then turns to the reboot icon. If I start the update manager again from the System menu it shows me that my system is up to date, so I suspect the update has taken place. But why am I getting the error messages. This now happens every time I see the new updates icon. Apart from that everything works fine.
I include my source list in case this helps.

I have done a update from Lenny to Squeeze with the update manager within Gnome. And there was a error 126 and the update broke off leaving me with a non working system. The system does start into Debian Squeeze to the command line. Users are in place and a login is possible. X does not work and there a lot of broken and defect packages. I want to repair my system. Is a restore without losing the configuration possible?

I've got Opera for Linux on my Debian Lenny system, installed by adding their repository to my APT config, and it works great. Just recently there was an update. When I downloaded it, it could not install because the signature could not be verified.
W: GPG error: [url] lenny Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY F9A2F76A9D1A0061
Why would that happen now when I already had the repository correctly setup in my apt files? I tried re-installing the key and that didn't change anything. Is there a problem with a public key server somewhere?

I'm using Debian Jessie, KDE 4.14.2. At some point over the last 6 months or so a couple of related problems appeared on my desktop...
1) Sometimes sound appears not to be working and I have to go to change the output device to get this to work (right click on kmix, audio setup, hardware setup, device conguration dropdown to change between analog output and speaker.. -see screenshot [URL] ....). This is often a problem but is particularly a problem if I boot up with a headphone/speaker plugged into the jack...then if I remove this, it doesn't output to the laptop built-in speakers unless I change the settings.
What I want it to do is fairly straightforward, I just want it to use the laptop speakers when nothing is plugged in, but use headphone/external speaker output if i put something in the headphone jack.
2) I have lots of sliders when I click on kmix in my taskbar - I don't really understand what all of these do, they seem like duplicates...and also, sometimes sliders for specific applications seem to behave independently, defaulting to very quiet, or so on - generally behaving strangely! see: [URL] .... for a screenshot.
Similarly, when I click the button to go to mixer, I get multiple duplicate tabs, some with lots of sliders again - some with none: [URL] ...., [URL] ...., and [URL] .....
I also have a problem, much more minor, but perhaps related: when I'm playing music in banshee, if I reduce volume using the system volume (keyboard shortcuts/ kmix), it goes down in banshee...but doesn't go back up again. so if i mute system sound then unmute it, banshee stays muted and i have to use the specific setting within banshee...
I'm not sure where these problems came from as it all previously worked fine within kde for me. Perhaps i messed something up intentionally or perhaps an update caused this ...

I have just upped from lenny to squeeze. I didn't mean to, really, but the package manager was well into its stride by the time I realised what was happening. Mostly all went well, BUT /usr is now 100% full. I notice that there are duplicate files in /usr/lib, eg Oct 11 22:35 libgcj.so.10.0.0 and Sep 14 2008 libgcj.so.90.0.0 (I assume the latter has been replaced by the former?). Is it safe to remove the "outdated" lib files? Is there an elegant way of doing it?

Today I tried to attach my digital turntable to the line-in of the computer and hoped for some sound to come. Unfortunately it didn't work. I switched the line-in feature on and put the volume on max. Still no results. I checked the same on Windows and this DOES work, so it can't be the hardware. Do I have to install some extra app in order to use the line-in in put? To complete the information: I'm using Squeeze 64-bits with Gnome. The turntable (Akai ATT05U) HAS worked before (that was when I used Ubuntu 32-bits on an Intel Celeron ). Another thing: since I tried to edit the sound settings, I get an error message at boot: "Could not update ICEautority file /var/lib/gdm3/.ICEauthority". Does this have anything to do with the audio matter?

I have recently updated my GNOME installation from 3.x to 3.14. Suddenly, there are many glitches. The power buttons on the power menu does nothing, I am forced to shut down via the terminal, everything goes black every now and again, and there is a weird colour pattern behind some icons when I hover over them. But most importantly, the icons and text do not show up on the "Activities -> Show Applications -> All" menu. They still there, as you can see the opening animation before they disappear, and I can click on them, but you just can't see them. The "Frequent" menu works fine. Here is a YouTube video I have made to explain my problem.

I did change the icons, but this was after these problems started happening, and so it should be un-related.
