I'm using Debian Jessie, KDE 4.14.2. At some point over the last 6 months or so a couple of related problems appeared on my desktop...
1) Sometimes sound appears not to be working and I have to go to change the output device to get this to work (right click on kmix, audio setup, hardware setup, device conguration dropdown to change between analog output and speaker.. -see screenshot [URL] ....). This is often a problem but is particularly a problem if I boot up with a headphone/speaker plugged into the jack...then if I remove this, it doesn't output to the laptop built-in speakers unless I change the settings.
What I want it to do is fairly straightforward, I just want it to use the laptop speakers when nothing is plugged in, but use headphone/external speaker output if i put something in the headphone jack.
2) I have lots of sliders when I click on kmix in my taskbar - I don't really understand what all of these do, they seem like duplicates...and also, sometimes sliders for specific applications seem to behave independently, defaulting to very quiet, or so on - generally behaving strangely! see: [URL] .... for a screenshot.
Similarly, when I click the button to go to mixer, I get multiple duplicate tabs, some with lots of sliders again - some with none: [URL] ...., [URL] ...., and [URL] .....
I also have a problem, much more minor, but perhaps related: when I'm playing music in banshee, if I reduce volume using the system volume (keyboard shortcuts/ kmix), it goes down in banshee...but doesn't go back up again. so if i mute system sound then unmute it, banshee stays muted and i have to use the specific setting within banshee...
I'm not sure where these problems came from as it all previously worked fine within kde for me. Perhaps i messed something up intentionally or perhaps an update caused this ...
I installed Mangler and one of its requirements was pulse-audio. I installed pulse-audio everything worked great except i couldn't get sound out of wow if i started mangler first and vice-versa. I then found a version of Mangler that worked with alsa. So i uninstalled mangler and pulse-audio, installed mangler-alsa. Everything works great now. The problem is when i uninstalled Pulse-audio i lost all my sliders in Yast > Hardware > Sound > other > volume. The only thing that shows up is master volume > Test. My sound works great just can't adjust anything. How do i get my sliders back. I would like some advice before i screw something up. I have recently acquired a Lenovo Q150 machine and attempting to use it as a HTPC. I've been reading that with this platform a newer kernel is required to make wireless, sound and a few other tweaks work correctly--so I bumped up to testing repositories to upgrade to the 2.6.38 kernel.[URL]...
The audio on this device has been more than a pain. I'm currently using XBMC to play media on this device and after setting the outputs to custom: plughw:1,9 sound is played correctly. I found this out by using alsamixer, selecting the sound card with the F6 key (Nvidia 1) unmutting all outputs, quiting, and running speaker-test -D plughw:1,X where X is the sub-device from the output of aplay -l until sound could be heard from the receiver.
Now my problem is that applications like mplayer, and iceweasel won't output any sound. I'd prefer not to use the optical out on the device and would like to send sound over HDMI. Has anyone had any luck getting it to work as it should?
I've also installed pulseaudio, not too sure if this is really needed. I've also used module assistant before upgrading to compile alsa from source, it worked but i just decided to upgrade the kernel instead of dealing with m-a every time an update comes through. Running 10.10 and win 7 on my HP dv6-2150us laptop and I'm having a few issues.
First how do I get HDMI audio output to my TV? I think I have just a integrated Intel graphics card. It works fine in windows but I can't seem to get it to work in Ubuntu. I tried searching but couldn't find anything pertaining to this issue.
I'm having a problem all the sudden with amixer. set Master 5% used to control the pulse audio master volume. Suddenly, it will only raise and lower the headphone volume. Pulseaudio works, but I no longer have a master volume at all.
I installed Banshee 1.6.0. The equalizer presets change the position of the sliders, but I am unable to grab with the mouse any of the sliders individually and set them manually.
I have a fresh install of Natty and i'm having some issues getting sound to work. My laptop has a built in sound card which works just fine. However, i also have a usb 5.1 sound card which isn't working at all. Both devices show up in 'Sound Preferences' but when i select the 5.1 device as the output device sound doesnt work. I ran the alsa-info.sh script and the output can be found here.

1. When I change the sound to internal sound the webcam works in Skype but I have not sound. 2. When I change the sound to the USB headset (sound output) the webcam does not work in Skype.
Been using Sound Recorder and set it to save as:CD Quality, MP3(.mp3 type)but it saves it as, 40 kbps and shows the time as 9 minutes 33 seconds when the correct time is really 2 minutes 39 seconds!Is there some plugin that will correct this to show the standard (128, 160, 192, 320) Bitrates and show accurate song times?

I am not getting sound output from the system... i earlier got it...But after reinstalling I removed Sound applet from the Panel... Hardware is detected as it should be. I think it is because I configured the applet earlier, but as I removed it, I don't know how to restore it...

Is there a way to condensate the output lines to get only one or two, indicating the start and last occurrence of a block? Or I need to create a program to do so?
Because right now I get thousands of similar lines, but when I'm scrolling through them i sometimes miss relevant information that i would've otherwise noted if it wasn't all that spammy.

OS is Suse11.3 64Bit with KDE now! At "System-Settings/Multimedia/Audio Output" there are the following devices in the given order: HDA NVidia (ALC662 rev1 Analog) HDA NVidia (ALC662 rev2 Digital) HDA NVidia, NVIDIA HDMI (HDMI Audio)
That's consistent with the connector layout of the mainboard. Playing "Test sound" while marked the HDMI Audio is not causing any output with HDMI, while analog works just fine!
I also installed the nVidia prop drivers with the packet manager. In YAST there is one card found in the sound section:: Idex=0 and Card Model=MCP79 High Definition Audio
I installed LMMS 0.4.5 on my computer (Ubuntu 9.10), but I'm getting no sound output from the program on ALSA, and whenever I try one of the other options (PulseAudio, OSS, etc.) it reverts to dummy audio. I tried installing JACK to correct the problem, but JACK seems to be giving errors and quitting, and in the past I've always used ALSA for LMMS and it's worked just fine.The problem is local to LMMS, even after a reinstall. I installed the vkeybd program to easily create some tunes, but when i push any of the keyboard buttons no sound comes out. I do have sound in programs like vlc. I thought jack and timidity may have something to do with it, but starting and clicking on things in those programs didnt get me anywhere because I dont have much understanding about them. How do I get a sound to come out of my speakers when i press a button in vkeybd?
Currently using an Asrock ION 330 with an SPDIF output and running 10.04It works as stereo but can't get the system to run as surround sound and everything shows as 2 channels only.The hardware itself supports it fine as it works under windows 7 without issues so it has to be a config issue somewhere.I have tried everything I can find via google including upgrading the alsa drivers but so far there has been no change.
I recently got a new ATI HD 4890 graphics card that supports sound over HDMI. It works in my other OS (Windows 7) but I cannot get it to work in Xubuntu. I read somewhere that by default the open source drivers have HDMI sound disabled. How do I turn it on? I even tried the Comprehensive Sound Problems Solutions Guide and still have no sound.

For some reason my soundcard is recording every playback sound. This become apparent when I was trying to make a Skype call and the other people couldn't hear me. I checked my sound preferences and noted that the input was recording what they say (they could hear an echo). Also if I played back anything it would redirect to them. This has never happened to me and I've made a lot of calls in the past.
I tested with Audacity and it records fine, but when I play back the recording, it redirects to the input channel so it's not a problem with Skype. (my soundcard is a VIA VT1708B 8-Ch). Somewhere I read that the output of aplay -l is useful.
I used to be able to use Skype without a problem. I must have played with something as it now doesn't allow me to both use a microphone and external speakers at the same time.I go into sound setting and I am able to test the microphone (works) but then the speakers don't show, if I reverse the tests then the opposite happens.
I have had a problem with none of the microphone inputs working after upgrading to Ubuntu 11,04 64-bit on my Toshiba A665 laptop with 4-core Phenon processor. This includes the internal mic, mic jack and Logitec C610 webcam. All worked before upgrading to 11.04. The broken mic input means no Skype calls.Today I noticed that there was an application called EarCandy that is suppose to add functionality to PulseAudio, so I installed it to see if the auto-detect features would fix my mic problem.
EarCandy completely broke the two apps I tested: Skype and RadioTray. Now neither will output sound. The Ubuntu start-up desktop sound scheme also quit. So it seems that EarCandy killed all sounds that heard while it was briefly installed.How do I get sound output back on Skype and RadioTray? how to fix my mic input issue?
A few days ago I setup a pc. It contains an "Intel ICH5" sound card. Before I begin posting all the configuration stuff I've tried so far what the standard procedures are to set it all up for recording the sound card output (with Audacity)?
On my older computer it all worked fine but now I only get silent recordings. However sometimes (when I played on the controls the right way...) I get recordings where you can (amoung some noise) recognize the stuff I actually wanted to record very low... Apart from Audacity I've also tried
Code: arecord -vv -fdat audio.wav which didn't work either. That's why I think the problem is not related to Audacity but to the system.
Is the combination of OpenSuse 11.2 + ALSA + Intel ICH5 commonly known to cause such trouble?
I'm using pulse audio sound server in opnsuse 11.3 and latest version of flash player, The problem is playing video or sound with flash player in firefox, Once I play something in firefox sound output it seem like closed to other applications like amarok.
