General :: Forgot Superuser Password - Cannot Login As SU

Mar 2, 2010

We use a linux (centOS I believe) cluster for our research. My professor somehow forgot the new password he set for root, and now can't login as 'su'. What is the way (or best way) to reset the root password without damaging something. I don't know whether it's even setup for 'sudo'. What will the procedure with and without 'sudo'?

I've tried reinstalling ssh too.

General :: Interactive Bash Script To Ask For Superuser Password?

Jan 10, 2011

This is an old question asked many times, which, however, is NEVER answered directly in any manual I've checked. So...I'm writing a bash install script (instead of a rpm or .deb package) that must be run by a normal user. change to superuser (asking for password and receiving it) and the rest of the script to be executed in the superuser mode in order to install what I mean to install.I know how `sudo ...` or `su `root"..."` or `gnome-terminal -e ...` can achieve this purpose by creating certain batch files and then give them as argument to these commands. That's NOT what I'm asking, however.I want to know how I can make the script interactively switch to superuser mode and go on running the rest of the script (can be a lot of code) in that mode. I don't mind if it oens a separate terminal window to do that; just how can that be achieved?

General :: Updating Ubuntu 10.04 But Forgot Password

Sep 8, 2010

I am trying to use Ubuntu 10.04 update, but have forgotten the password. If I could get the GRUB prompt, I could use a method I picked up somewhere, but where is the GRUB prompt, which I understand is a bootloader? My installation is single installation on a single partition. I press ESC before the Splash Screen, but just get a square bracket and pressing ESC makes no difference, to the continued boot process, except perhaps make it a little slower. I can use the Desktop and the software I use works fine. There is also something about a 'ring' that requires a password, which I also don't know.

General :: Yet Another Need To Access Forgot Root Password

Aug 13, 2010

I have tried: booting into single user mode (using '1' and 'single' in my bootloader edits) and it still ends up kicking me to the 'myBox login:' prompt booting from a live-CD with no luck - seems my CD drive is hosed, or the system just won't boot the CD

This is a system I set up, literally, years ago, with no need to touch it. It was originally set up as a file server, running SAMBA. I am wanting to add CUPS to it, and possibly a web server if it will handle the load. Currently, it is running Debian 4.0 without a GUI.

My next step, if I can't get into the root account, is to install a new OS (and try to salvage the file shares that exist). I just would rather keep the install that I have, but I need to hack/crack or change my root password.

Fedora :: FC9: Forgot - Partition Doesn't Work - Can't Login At The LUKS Login After Grub Starts

Feb 15, 2010

My computer was working this morning and both hard drives were working fine, then all of a sudden for about two hours I was stuck with this "problem", then after fumbling and moving and stablizing things, then Windows works? See below for details. I've finally reinstalled both hard drives, but the one with the Linux partition doesn't work: it says nothing is discovered on the disk. I can't login at the LUKS login after grub starts, therefore I can't get into Linux, but Windows works?! I used to be able to go directly into Grub when the computer starts, I forgot how to do that but it doesn't matter. If you need details I'd be glad to provide them. I just wondered why Linux doesn't work, but Windows does. I have Linux & Windows on two different separate hard drives
