I'm running Debian testing, and when I boot up my netbook, I see in the GRUB menu that there is Linux kernel 2.6.32-trunk-686, Linux kernel 2.6.32-5-686, and Linux kernel 2.6.32-3-686..
What is the different between the three? Linux 2.6.32-trunk-686 is at the top of the list and that's what I let load first.
I messed up my install so now I can't boot it. I get errors. I doubt I'll be able to fix it. I messed up the upgrade of the kernel images... I'm not sure whether there's something I could do in the Grub config file... I have one other Linux OS I can use in the meantime (plus Windows OS) so I thought maybe boot that up and check the Debian partition in case there's any files I want to save/keep. If I re-install, is Debian Squeeze LXDE still a good choice? I'm going to install something different in the partition where the other Linux OS is. Right now, it's grub is handling the boot loader. The computer is an old laptop, a Thinkpad T41. The HDD is 160GB.

I've found some past threads like this link and this other link, and some other google info, which suggest the only difference would be the io scheduler. Also, I see the default grub choice is "Desktop" and not "Default", so I take this as a suggestion to prefer one over the other.
However, my broadcom 4312 wireless only works on the "default" and not on the "desktop" kernel, so I guess there must be other differences. I just want to evaluate which one is the less long-term risk option to go.

Is this the latest version. i don't know how old 11.4 is, but there weren't a great deal of updates. have added a few repos like packman etc.
Kept /home as the same and what a difference that made. i used to do a fresh install every time, it saved just about all my settings!!! just needed a few more programs and stuff but nothing major.
Really quick, clean install. just need to delete my old root partition for the old 11.3 system.
Would also just like to know are there many differences between 11.3 and 11.4?

I seem to have determined a few other things about my "only gets as far as a GRUB command line" problem:To recap, sda3 (GRUB hd0,2) is the main Linux partition; sda9 (GRUB hd0,8) is the boot partition.GRUB is 0.92.Installation was from an 8.04LTS live CD (at least, that's what the envelope says it is)/"/boot/grub" (i.e., "/grub" on sd9/hd0,8) contains a "menu.lst" file. I modified it (had to do a "sudo gedit" from a command line!) to (1) comment out the line that hides the boot menu, (2) change the timeout from 3 seconds to 90, and (3) add a menu line based on my succesful manual IPL of DOS.
It still boots to a GRUB command line. If I do a "configfile /grub/menu.lst," a boot menu comes up. DOS will successfully IPL, but Linux still gets a "no setup signature found," (ditto for "recovery mode"), which suggests either a bad kernel, or a kernel that's too big for the GRUB to handle.Why would it be finding its way to grub, but not finding the boot menu file?Why would the live CD come up just fine, yet the GRUB and kernel it installs fail?

I'm a very new Linux user, so speak slowly and don't use big words. I installed Karmic from the Live CD. It is the only OS in use on this system. I then upgraded to Ubuntu Studio using the instructions found on the wiki.
On bootup, I get a brief message stating "GRUB loading" and then the system automatically boots to the generic kernel. No GRUB menu is ever displayed. I would like the option to boot to the real-time kernel, but I have no idea how to edit the appropriate files. I've done a fair amount of reading on the subject, but I find very little information relating directly to the real-time kernel, and so I still feel like I'm too green to do it without messing something up.
I am using DEBIAN 6.0 and I wannna update my kernel from 2.6.32 to 2.6.38. Every time, I do it but after the installation & rebooting into the new kernel it gives me error "UNABLE TO BOOT INTO THE KERNEL".

When terminal asked about mime.types (it asks what to do with it) I chose showing me the differences between the new and the old versions. and then I couldn't get out from the "showing differences menu"! so, I shut down the terminal. and now I'm afraid to reboot the computer. can someone possibly say, what i am to do next is it okay to reboot my computer. or do i have to do smth first? Oh, and i almost forgot, when i sudo do-release-upgrade i says that i have latest version and doesn't do anything. update manager isn't showing up neither
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have special permission from the management to stimulate my colleagues to learn Linux - er, Fedora. So I'm dual booting a few machines for them to toy around with. However, all of the popular things of course have to work easily, otherwise there's no convincing them..Almost everything has been arranged, except for an easy way to bulk-print pictures onto A4. I have probably missed it but google doesn't help, this forum doesn't give me too much that I can find.
I did find gpp (Gnome Photo Print) but that is still too complicated. I need to be able to either get it directly from the nautilus context menu, or set the gui so that this app is automatically used when viewing images in a memory card. And then it has to be easy to print.

I am trying to delete some files to make space. But, I made the mistake of 'moving to the trash bin Whoops Doing this in Debian requires running through hoops trying to find files that went into a black hole. In Ubuntu, I move it to the Trash bin.I empty the trash bin and I'M DONE. REPEAT: I'M THEN DONE. Why, why, why, make it so hard? If I should do it a different way, how should I delete files so that they are GONE so that I can free up some disk space? I don't know where the files went now and when I run 'df -h', it shows exactly the same before I 'deleted' the files. I assume they exist someplace.
I then tried:
rm -fr /home/username/.Trash
Checking again using 'df -h' shows no change. I'm confused. Please help and excuse my frustration. I guess I'm still too raw as I don't do these tasks very often. I have to do some major copying soon, though, as I want to copy many many files from my home partition to an external drive. I hope I can receive some help/support for that if I have trouble. Also, please suggest some steps for freeing up disk space from moving/copying files to another drive to deleting files. I recall there are some commands that might delete temp files, too (disk 'clean' type?).
Just to set the scene, I'm not a Linux expert, but am learning the hard way! I have a 6 server cluster that needs upgrading (this includes quite a few of our own packages), and am currently working on a spare server. Lenny is now installed, and my next problem is that libapache-template-perl doesn't seem to exist in Lenny. So, is there a definitive list of 'replacement' packages, if not what can I do about this one.

THIS NEVER HAPPENED WHILE RUNNING WINDOWS VISTA OR WINDOWS XP. First icons will disapear and text will not work, images wont be there, system dock and explorer will just not work, the start menu will have nothing in it, and when i restart it, (manual) it will boot and show me specs and say "NO OPERATING SYSTEM FOUND" and when i go into BIOS it says IDE0:_______ not the hard drive name and size like it usually does.
I'm trying to reinstall Debian on one of my machines after an unsuccessful install of FreeBSD (it didn't jive with my ssd). Debian installations have never been a problem before on this particular setup before but now for some reason it won't get past the "Debian GNU/linux installer boot menu". The USB goes into idle mode and the menu does not respond to keyboard strokes. I've tried several debian images to no avail. Ubuntu seems to work just fine though but I don't want to install Ubuntu just because Debians having some problems. I booted ubuntu live and reformated the SSD I had tried to install FreeBSD on because there were no partition tables on it but that didn't work either. I'd like some expert input before I go do another `dd`.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have installed Debian Jessie 8.0.3 64-bit net install on an IBM ThinkCentre. I have earlier had a dual boot Win 8 and Ubuntu 14.04 installed on the computer. When I installed Debian Jessie, I deleted the Ubuntu partitions and created new partitions from the free space. The install went fine and the Debian EFI/UEFI version of Grub was installed, but clearly at some other place, as when I boot the system, the old Ubuntu Grub pops up and of course cannot find the necessary files that it is looking for.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have an old version of DSL installed, followed by XP. On a further partition I installed Debian 6. Installation of Debian went smoothly, including the final detection of the other two OS for Grub. I had expected that the Debian-version of Grub would override/overwrite the one that came when I installed DSL.
It did not - when I boot, Grub comes up with the old DSL menu, in which Debian is not included.
From what I've been reading about Grub, there's two "fases", first in MBR, that points to the second part where the actual boot-commands are given, in my case stored in DSL.
When I open the Grub config-file in Debian, both DSL and XP are correctly listed.
Now I'm not sure what to do - I'm a bit hesitant to try and point grub-fase-1 to Debian (if I can write the correct lines at all, I'm very insecure on that) - if that fails, I cannot boot at all. But I'm not really sure either how to formulate a new rule in the DSL-grub, to make Debian boot from the existing menu.

So far I've tried to add a number to 'GRUB_DEFAULT=', but it wouldn't want to boot in anything other than Debian or Windows, same with StartUp-Manager...
I currently have the liquorix kernels installed, but I can't get to use them as the standard Debian kernel is always picked. So is there any way to change this behaviour?
I have not been using my lenny 2.6.26-2-amd64 for about a month or more.I booted it today, and there were over 30 updates available, inculding some kernel header updates I installed all these updates and rebooted.Well, there are 2 new entries to grub menu:Linux 2.6.32-bpo-3-amd64Linux 2.6.32-bpo-2-amd64 (single user or recovery)in addition to my old kernels.So, I chose the bpo-3 entry, but it just sits there.I have to chose the kernel before the update. Is there something wrong with the update? dit: I just found out that synaptic manager does not show 2.6.32-bpo-3-amd64 at all as being installed.In fact, it is not in the header list nor the image list.

I can move the cursor a little and slowly or not at all. Few violent reboots and I get a clean boot. Running Debian Lenny kernel 2.6.26-2-686 on a Pentium 4 2.0 GHz with 250 MiB ram.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am trying to setup a debian sid on my Chromebook (Asus C201 / Rockchip ARM).I've followed the howto here : URL.....Debootstrap ok, config ok, kernel repack ok... everything went fine until the first boot.When i boot from the sd card, nothing seem to happen. The screen stay black, no text appear.Back in chromeos, i check the syslog and the kernel did load successfully.

I'm running Squeeze and I've been running into the r8169 hang problem (see [url]for example). A temporary (until the driver foibles in the kernel are resolved) solution that seems to be working for many people is passing the boot option "pcie_aspm=off" to the kernel.
Apparently, either I don't understand grub2 at all or my kernel doesn't like me very much. I put the option in grub.cfg like so:
However, it appears that the kernel, for whatever reason, is either not being given this boot option or it's not interpreting it correctly. When I run lspci -vv I get this for my r8169 ethernet card:
The relevant section is LnkCtl: ASPM L0s L1 Enabled; indicating that ASPM is still on.
