I've created live squeeze usb-hdd with syslinux as boot manager:LB_BOOTLOADER="syslinux". Now if I boot from this usb-hdd image I get in the boot menu:

How to configure to put these "failsafes" away?

I have the same problem with an Ubuntu 10.04 live CD. Whenever I attempt to boot (Lu|U)buntu from a live CD/USB, on most computers. it works just fine. However, on two computers, the live media starts off just fine with the main menu (Try Ubuntu without installing, etc.), then, when I select any option except 'Boot from First Hard Disk', after a few seconds, the CD stops spinning or the USB loses power. I'm convinced it's not a problem from the media, since it works perfectly fine on some computers.

I have installed two OS on my PC. Windows 7 and fedora 12,but when I boot it shows 3 entries for fedora and one for windows to select. How can I remove redundant menu entries without affecting boot loader.

Apparently I'm not supposed to edit /boot/grub/grub.cnf, but /etc/default/grub and /etc/grub.d. I looked at these and read The Readme as well as a tutorial at [URL]. I'm still not sure of what to do. When I boot up I get 4 choices: 2 for Squeeze and two for another linux distro. I would like to edit the print out I get when I boot up, as well as add the partition for XP which wasn't included.

I would like to be able to edit which OS is set as default on the first selection menu. I installed Ubuntu via windows xp. and have Grub 2 installed. When I start my computer, first I see is the BIOS, then I have a menu which allows me to select either windows xp or Ubuntu (windows xp is the default which I'd like to change to Ubuntu). Once I select Ubuntu, then I get the menu allowing me to select between the different upgrade versions.
From all the pages I read through on editing grub2 defaults, they only refer to the second menu that I get to pick between the upgrade versions or kernels (I think they are referred to). What I'd like to do is set Ubuntu as the defualt on the first menu screen, as Ubuntu is my preferred OS and it can load automatically, then I don't care what the default upgrade version is loaded (this i have understood how to edit).
In my Red Hat 7.2 , the /boot/grub/grub.conf has the following data :
But when I reboot my Red Hat server , I don't see the Grub menu to say edit the boot kernel .
I have a simple question, what is the best way to clean up or edit my boot screen menu on Ubuntu...? I'm running 2.6.32-25-generic #44-Ubuntu SMP UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux. I have run about 5 upgrades and the older Kernels still show up.
View 9 Replies View RelatedDecided to swap from ubuntu to full blown debian - and glad I did - just feels right using debian to me. Anyways. On my desktop im trying to edit my "Applications" menu" so that it includes "Programming" and "Other" sections of the menu. So i righclick "Applications" goto "Edit Menus" and try to checkbox the "Programming" & "Other" menu options. Alas as soon as I check them - the tick dissapears again - and there is no way for me to edit the menu. Its my system I have full access.
View 4 Replies View RelatedOk so I wanted to try out Debian, so I got the wheezy live image (gnome) via torrent. The problem is after I write the image to the USB, the computer cannot boot from it. It doesn't even display the USB in the boot menu. I've tried many ways of writing the image like dd, powerISO, UUI, imagewrite (not sure if that was the correct name) etc. Strangely enough, it works on a virtual machine via Plop Boot Manager, but not my actual PC.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI am attempting to get Debian+Mate running on my laptop, with no success. I have not yet used Linux, but I do wish to climb out of the Window, and the Live session seems ideal to get a feel for Debian before finally abandoning Windows.
I got the Debian+Mate ISO file from the Debian website, and created a bootable USB stick. (Note : I have done this several times, getting new ISOs, and using Unetbootin, Universal USB Installer, and Linux Live installer; the result is always the same.)
When I boot the USB drive, all appears good at first. I get to the Debian (or Mate?) screen which is a pale jade green with a white squiggle in the middle region, with a panel at the top; this shows at left three options - applications, places, and system; and at right the correct time, a sound symbol,the wifi symbol, and a battery indicator. At the left of the screen in vertical arrangement there are 4 icons labelled computer, users home, install Debian Sid, and trash. On the bottom panel, at left there is a "button" for "click to hide all windows & show desktop", and at right 4 squares for workspaces.
There are also (temporary) windows that inform me that the battery is no good (I run on mains), and that there is no wifi connection established. These windows disappear in a minute or so.
The cursor moves ok. The only actions that it creates are the information drop-down texts that tell me what the headings mean - e.g. no connections when I hover the cursor above the wifi connections symbol.
But whatever I attempt to do - selecting any of the options - nothing happens. Everything except the cursor appears to be dead.
The machine that I am using is an old laptop that I use as a second computer. It has a SIS Mirage 3 graphics engine, which I gather may be a problem. I also tried the same procedure with my fairly modern ASUS laptop (NVidia graphics) with exactly the same results; it seems that NVidia graphics may also be problematic, judging from some posts on the web. I have also tried Debian+Cinnamon, again with the same outcome.
As you probably know Debian LIVE ISOs is not (U)EFI bootable since there is no EFI bootloader on them. I need to boot usb for uefi mode...

The binary.img was created.
Now if I try to boot from this image using qemu, I get a message "No bootable device"
If I check this main partition using gparted, the flag is "lba" instead of "boot".
Even doesn't work if try to change to "boot".
How to solve this problem?
I've finished the installation of Debian Squeeze using Installer loader from Windows. But the Installer menu is still appear on Windows Boot Manager.
I've try to uninstall the "Installer Loader" from Windows and I got an error message about BCDEDIT (if I'm not wrong), during uninstallation process.
I ignore it, and continue the uninstallation process until complete. But, After I reboot my computer, the Installer menu is still appear on Windows Boot Manager.
I'm using Windows Vista Business SP2.
Debian-live-8.2.0-amd64-xfce-desktop.iso do not boot in uefi mode. I would like to know if live image can boot uefi mode? If not how can I do later from bios to install grub efi?

I have Koala with Grub 2, working fine. Just did some updates and now the boot menu is getting long, too many kernels. Want to reduce to the last two kernels plus Win XP, so got online and looked for instructions in English. News flash: Nobody seems to care about this issue, there is absolutely nothing to be found on it for Grub 2. There is a SIMPLE command for Grub, "howmany", in menulst. Menulst is not used in Grub 2, so that's out. OK I give up, after searching for over an hour for Grub 2's equivalent. Maybe someone here knows how it's done? IN ENGLISH please, not "sudo I am an intelligent BEGINNER. The Grub 2 page says: "GRUB 2 allows users to create customized menu selections which will be automatically added to the main menu when sudo update-grub is executed." Note the word ADDED. What about REMOVING? Does anyone want to bother themselves with addressing this issue? I read somewhere StartUpManager can do this. Application Finder doesn't show StartUpManager on my machine, and reading about it at [URL].. as it seems to be Grub-1 related. I don't get the impression it will do what I want for Grub 2. If it does, they should say so, right??
I could remove the older kernels, but would rather just edit the boot menu. I found this for removing kernels: Open synaptic, do a search for "linux-image" and then remove the older kernels from your computer. Removing them via synaptic will remove them from the boot menu as well. Keep the kernel you are currently using plus one older one you know works. To find your current kernel: uname -r OK so I open synaptic and do the search. It comes up with maybe 200 files, some of which start with linux-image, scattered throughout the list. Oh boy, let a newbie loose on this. Just select and delete them all, why not? I can't tell one from another, the only difference is a cryptic number that means not one whit to me. There has to be a better way!
I got brave after editing etc/default/grub and doing update-grub, which reported the kernels by number, which I had forgotten. Then went back into Synaptic and hit the 'Sort By Installed' divider, which brought all the installed kernels to the top, where they make sense. Then I selected the two lowest-numbered and shot them in the head. They are gone.
i have been running Kubuntu 10.04 on my primary hard drive, and i have a second 1.5TB HD that i use for storage. so shrunk the secondary HD partition and created a second 50GB partition and i installed Ubuntu 10.10 on it and told it to rewrite the mbr on my primary HD. Where i am at: i took the menu entry from my Kubuntu "grub.cfg" and the entry from my Ubuntu "grub.cfg" and put them in the 40_custom file. so now when i boot-up my computer, it shows both installations at the bottom of Grub2s menu list. with all the menu entries that Grub automatically adds.
What i would like to know is how do i make it so that the Grub2 menu only shows the entries that i add to the 40_Custom file and not the randomly generated list aswell.
I'm currently running Lucid Lynx, which installed the Grub 2 Boot loader which it currently lists three different Linux kernels. My problem is this:
1. How do I edit the menu to either remove or comment out one or more of the kernels?
2. Can I remove any of the kernels I don't want, which files do I remove, and will doing so compromise my system.
I have been frustrated attempting to get Grub2 to boot a Debian Live system from hard disk. Have set aside a 4gb partition /dev/sda1 to contain the Debian Live and some other recovery tools. I actually have them all working from a 4gb USB stick successfully, but getting it to work on my HDD has proved challenging. On USB, I have PartedMagic, Gparted, Grml, and of course my standard 6.01 Squeeze. I have also managed to get the Debian Live booting from that USB stick. Very slick.
However, I can NOT get Debian Live to boot from my HDD; altho all of the others above boot fine. Have tried it two ways - one using an iSO image, which is how it is done on my USB stick. The other attempt is to copy the entire contents of the ISO to a directory.
Here are my directory structures:
debian_live_gnome_squeeze_i386- contains the following: debian-live-6.0.1-i386-gnome-desktop.iso initrd.gz initrd.img vmlinuz which is how it is laid out on my USB stick debian_live - contains the files from the ISO image The error I get is something like "panic unable to find live filesystem" My grub.cfg snippet for the two methods I have tried - the 2nd menuentry is similar to how it works on the USB stick.

Probly don't really need to get it working since PartedMagic can do almost everything I need for recovery and I can use the USB for reinstall or whatever else.
I'm trying to reinstall Debian on one of my machines after an unsuccessful install of FreeBSD (it didn't jive with my ssd). Debian installations have never been a problem before on this particular setup before but now for some reason it won't get past the "Debian GNU/linux installer boot menu". The USB goes into idle mode and the menu does not respond to keyboard strokes. I've tried several debian images to no avail. Ubuntu seems to work just fine though but I don't want to install Ubuntu just because Debians having some problems. I booted ubuntu live and reformated the SSD I had tried to install FreeBSD on because there were no partition tables on it but that didn't work either. I'd like some expert input before I go do another `dd`.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu 9.10 (desktop version) and it performs flawlessly. Now I want to add a second hard drive to the same box, install Ubuntu 9.10 *server* on it, and use GRUB to control which one boots.
Problem is, I'm a Windows pro but a Linux n00b. Should I disconnect the first hard drive (the one with Ubuntu desktop) before I do the server installation on the second (new) drive? Also, how do I edit GRUB's menu to offer a choice between the 2 OSes?
I have installed Debian Jessie 8.0.3 64-bit net install on an IBM ThinkCentre. I have earlier had a dual boot Win 8 and Ubuntu 14.04 installed on the computer. When I installed Debian Jessie, I deleted the Ubuntu partitions and created new partitions from the free space. The install went fine and the Debian EFI/UEFI version of Grub was installed, but clearly at some other place, as when I boot the system, the old Ubuntu Grub pops up and of course cannot find the necessary files that it is looking for.
