the error is:

my distribution is ubuntu 10.4.
It started with Update Manager constantly recycling and not updating. When it starts it shows 295 files and 308MB waiting to download. When I click on 'Install Updates' it appears to go through the process, and then presents me with the same 'waiting to install' window again - and again, and again - in fact as many times as I care to click the 'Install Updates' button. No error messages appear. The 'Settings' button produces the same apparent process as the 'Install Updates' button, but doesn't present me with any other screen.
I've tried all the solutions I could find on these forums and nothing works. The sudo suggestions for Terminal usually produce error codes. adjusting a line in the 'hosts' file. When I tried this I was presented with the obstacle of not having access to the read-only file, and no matter how much I searched I couldn't find how to gain access . While investigating all these possible solutions, I was directed in turn to the Software Sources and Synaptic Package Manager applications, but when I attempted to start them, 'Starting Administrative Application' appeared briefly on the taskbar - and then disappeared!
Software center, update manager, Synaptic package manager crashes for no reason. I have not done any recent changes or downloads. I'm running a fresh install of ubuntu 11.04
5 gigs of ram
Intel dual core

I want to install CmapTools in my desktop, which runs v.10.04. I have downloaded the .bin file from their site.Is there a way to install it using Synaptic Package Manager?

I have gone to a couple locations and the files exist and the hash is correct, and the file types are correct. I have tried replacing the sources file. I have tried sudo rm -r /var/lib/apt/lists sudo apt-get clean sudo apt-get update with the same problem happening upon updating. In the same exact areas.

System management is locked by the application with pid 6890 (/usr/sbin/packagekitd)
I literally have to kill -9 pid everytime I run it. What is going on here?
While running the update manager my system froze and all that I knew to do was power down and power up again. When I first started the update said 18.5 MB and on restart it said 17.x MB. I restarted the update manager and it failed with errors.
The last message says "E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) A package failed to install. Trying to recover:" but no progress in 1/2 hour. If I try to copy the messages to the clipboard it says that cntl-c will abort the operation so I haven't done that. From the top of the "Details" there are about eight "Invalid archive signature" messages. I don't know how to proceed.
1. Update-manager panel icon changes into do-not-enter traffic sign.
2. If you want to re-install Update-manager using Synaptic, then Synaptic opens for a while and then closes by itself.
I installed Xubuntu 11.04 a few days ago, and everything's been more or less fine since then. But I installed some updates last night, paying no attention to what they were, and this morning I logged in to find problems.
Open windows do not get registered with window listings (like in the top panel, for instance). All windows open above desktop panels, and cannot be moved behind them. Some windows open with their title bars above the top frame of the screen, but Alt + Click/Drag doesn't grab the window. Maximizing and minimizing windows do not work. There is simply no reaction to clicking them. I logged out and also restarted the system to see if it was a fluke, but it's not.
Otherwise, everything still seems to be functional. I'm writing this post from the laptop that's having the problem. I'm going to try uninstalling the crappy ATI video drivers and see if that resolves the problem.
I,ve tried upgrade from F14 to F15 using preupgrade, but I run into serious problem. Preupgrade downloaded all packages without problem and prompt me to reboot. After reboot installation process went ok. It was upgrading cca 1650 packages. But installation hung around package 1600 (almost on end) with message that openjpeg-devel-1.4-6.fc15.i686 cannot be installed and only option to end installer. After reboot I ended up with "kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)". It is still possible to enter grub menu, where I can choose upgrade to F15, but it fails again on that openjpeg-devel package. When I enter terminal after failure, I can see package is downloaded in preupgrade repo (and after moving somewhere else and running upgrade again it I got message that package is missing). Is there any possibility to skip this package installation or only option is fresh reinstall?
View 10 Replies View RelatedI installed a packge redmine apt-get install redmine It went without any error. But I found later that it was not working. Another package I installed was red5 during installation it says it can not start red5-server. How can I debug the package installations. If there would have been some script I would have set some thing like set -vmx in it.
As an example while installing red5 I got a message to issue the following

I was having a problem with a fresh 11.04 install and the VPN software I use for work. I found the fix was to upgrade the software, so I downloaded an RPM, converted it to .deb and installed it via dpkg. The install worked and the VPN software now works, but Package Manager says I have a broken package and wants to 'upgrade' to the older broken one. How can I fix this without breaking my VPN SW again?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a small touchscreen tablet here that's running a cut down version of ubuntu (I think 9.04). It has its own flash gui and no mention of ubuntu on it anywhere (but I know 100% that it is). Anyway, its so cut down it doesn't even have things like apt-get, any file sharing capabilities and it cannot run .deb files. I can only do things to the filesystem via ssh not using the gui. Its running a busybox shell which is also very limited.
I would ideally like to be able to connect to some nfs shares on my ubuntu server with this thing but im having no luck. I have found out its because it doesnt have nfs-common or portmap installed (apparent dependencies). How would I go about manually installing something like that? I need to be pointed in the right direction as atm. I am not too sure. Baring in mind I cannot simply use apt-get or unpack a .deb file.
I am getting the following error when trying to open the Package Manager.
This is Ubuntu 10.10
An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information.
Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message:

My ubuntu is Portuguese, I took the liberty of translating to facilitate the understanding.
