I currently have a server setup in a perfect way for my specific network. Is there a way that I can mirror the server EXACTLY to a CD that will install all my configurations and the like upon CD boot?

The luksOpen command asks me for my passphrase, but always rejects it. I have retried this several times and written down the passphrase - and even tried with a very simple one just to check. And I never can make it work.
I have installed Fedora 12 and am running it successfully. I have made a few stupid mistakes a couple of times and have had to start from scratch with a complete OS reinstall on a few occassions. I am happy with my current setup and am wondering is it possible for me to create a Live CD that has my exact configuration so that If I make a mess again, I can just stick in my backup DVD/CD's and roll back to my happy (Known to ne Working) sate. Something like System restore on Windows...... Is this possible?

I currently run CentOS 5.4 and I want to create an image of my current hard drive so that I can play it in a VM Player (VirtualBox).
What utility can I use to create a disk image? Also, Since i'm only using 20gb. I think I want to make a "sparse" file so that the image only takes up about 20gb.
Now... if there is an easier way to do this... let me know. I tried a few tutorials online with no progress. I spent all day yesterday trying to figure this out. Literally, all day.
I'm running a modified version of OpenSUSE 11.1 from the susestudio builder. I've run across a weird issue whereby gparted is unable to create anything more than an hfs filesystem.
It seems that the package libparted simply doesn't exist in any of the repositories I'm using. I am figuring this would affect what gparted is able to do, although I'm unsure since the program itself runs fine.
I have attached an external USB disk to my debian gnu/linux system. The disk showed up as device /dev/sdc, and I prepared it like this:created a single partition withfdisk /dev/sdc (and some more commands in the interactive session that follows)formatted the partition withmkfs.msdos /dev/sdc1If I then attach the USB disk to a Windows XP or Vista system, then no new drive becomes available. The disk and its partition show up fine in the disk managment tool under "computer management", but apparently the file system in the partition is not recognized.How do I create a FAT32 file system which can actually be used in windows?edit:I've given up on this and went with a NTFS file system created by windows. In debian lenny this can be mounted read-write but apparently it requires you to install the "ntfs-3g" package and explicitly pass the -t ntfs-3g option to the mount command.

I have a fedora 11 installation on my machine , with a customized partitioning of the 500GB sata HDD , I wanted to create a exact replica image on a USB stick , for future installations on other 500GB sata HDDs .. while only need to create a copy of the 5 GB (/boot + / ) while the remaining 400 GB + is a Data Logger partition which can be created by a script. 'sudo apt-get install fatx' And then it downloads the driver, and bam, they can read the fatx file system?
I debootstrapped lenny to by machine. I compiled the latest kernel etc and setup all the necessary programs by chrooting. I want to now boot a PC using newly debootstrapped system. How do I do it?

What I do not understand is why 'is a valid inequality' gets written to this file. I thought it would write '2', all the file names in the current directory, then '3' into the file called '5'. Why does the 'is a valid inequality.' get written to the file also?
I cannot seem to get past the "creating File System.." window on a laptop upgrade
Setup: Thinkpad T23 (dual boot) upgrade from fc10 using DVD iso.checked with checksum and burnt by K3b.
History/actions taken:
Burnt iso to DVD and install/upgrade froze "creating File System " froze after approximately 10 minutes.
(completely froze and had to use the power button!)
Checked disk OK on laptop, tried again, same fault.
Bought another DVD.(different die) and tried again, same fault.
Tried another laptop HD, (full install not dual boot) , same fault.
Removed partitions with fdisk, but still no luck.
Tried disk on a spare HD on my PC and it works, I get into the window allowing software selection!
Tried a "Linux Format" fc 10 disk and that works, also tried a PCLinux LXF disk which also worked.
The laptop does not report any problems at bootup and I do not not what else to try

I've tried to install both Debian 5.0.3 and Gentoo 10.1 (Minimal).The Gentoo distro kernel is 2.6.31. I honestly didn't check to see what version the Debian distro is using. With both distributions, I get a kernel panic as soon as I try to create the filesystem. I can see the drives just fine, and can partition them. The problem doesn't happen until I try to create a filesystem. I've tried configuring my SATA drives in the BIOS as IDE and as RAID. kernel support for SATA drives is at least three years old, so I have to believe that SATA support has become ubiquitous, but obviously I'm missing something here.
I was just wondering if there is a way to capture current state on a machine and create live cd from it?
If not - what is the best way to create Live CD with optimazied system updates and configuration packages.
I am very new to linux, and I have a question regarding the filesystem check (fsck). The power recently went out and when I tried to restart linux the following error appears:

Give root password for maintenance (or type Control-D to continue) I wasn't sure what to do, but checked some other online forums and they suggested running fsck manually - so I typed in the root password - and used the command, "fsck -A -V ; echo == $? ==" it then gave the following message
*WARNING!!! Running e2fsck on a mounted filesystem may cause SEVERE filesystem damage
*Would you like to continue (y/n)
Again, I wasn't sure what to do so i just checked no. I then manually turned off the computer and was prompted at the beginning to press Alt-3. I was brought to another screen and it informed me one of the drives was degraded and suggested rebuilding the array. I tried doing this, but it still brings me back to the original error of, "/dev/sda1 contains file system w/errors, check forced," and the process continues.
Also, when I tried to rebuild the array, I didn't backup any of the data on our home directory before doing this (which was probably a big mistake). After being prompted to type the root password, I was able to give the ls command and look at all the directories...the home directory where our data was stored was empty and I am afraid I may have lost some information. Is there a possibility that data was lost when I was trying to rebuild using the old drives?
I have an apparently stable installation of Xubuntu that I've hand-tweaked in a few ways. I'd like to be able to reinstall this system verbatim on this machine should a disk crash happen, etc.Is there a "standard" method to create an install and/or total-backup CD that would be an instantiation of the currently-installed-and-modified system?

Fat 32.I was copying some files into that and suddenly my computer shut down due to overheating .. am having this problem for some days ..Anyway .. After I restarted it I found I am not being able to any thing except copying for the drive .. Otherwise I dont have permission.I cannot even change the permission into 'Create and Delete' while its saying "Read only filesystem" ..When I restart the comp, everything seems okay .. but after a few seconds the problem arise .. it become inaccessible .. View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm working with a program that uses Open Motif to create all of the widgets, including the Open File dialog box (obviously). However, Open Motif being kinda old-timey, 80's vintage, and for the most part now an abandoned project, it is quite clunky. So, actually what I need to do is to open some files located on my work server. I have already successfully connected to the relevant server directories with Samba, and with programs built with GTK+ (such as GIMP) I can open files across the network because I have created a bookmark in Nautilus, and those bookmarks appear in the Open File dialog box created by GTK+. Now, Open Motif is different: it doesn't see network locations, orNautilus shortcuts. When I type "smb://serveripyadayada" in the search folder, it really doesn't like it and complains. So, what do I do? Can I get somehow Open Motif to open a network location? Or can I do a run-around and place a shortcut in the file system that points to the network location?

With a separate /home partition, you may upgrade or reinstall Fedora without erasing user data files." seems to suggest I have to create a separate physical partition and assign that to /home. But reading elsewhere it seems to suggest logical volume acts like a partition. My goal is to make it easy in case fedora is hosed and I have to re-install it without affecting /home where my cirtical data resides. Given above do I need to create a separate physical partition or I am just fine?
I have a second hard disk that originally had windows and all my data. Windows is hosed but I can see my data from within Fedora and Windows is gone and I created created new partition in its place which used ot be the C:/ drive appears as 53 Gb filesystem. My data which was originally D drive appears as 215 GB filesystem. As given in [URL] I want to create a new logical volume in 53 Gb filesystem which I want to use as space for virtual disk to install guest OS's in KVM. Currrently 53 GB filesystem is mounted as /media/3467BH89JK789 but this does not work well with KVM. how do I create this logical volume out of 53 Gb filesystem partition and add proper selinux info and do I add to vg_vostrolx volume group and in a different volume group?

I know about the handful of utils like: lsmod, lshw, lspci, lsusb, xinput, sysinfo, hardinfo, and friends. I could roll a script and cobble some sort of report file together.

But I get the following:
mount: you must specify the filesystem type
I try ext3:
mount -o loop /tmp/apps.img /media/apps -t ext3
dmesg says:
error: can't find ext3 filesystem on dev loop6.
I've also tried ext2, vfat etc. How can I detect the filesystem type of apps.img?
I have a following problem: Recently my drive with Ubuntu 9.4 has mysteriously stopped working, i.e. when I switch the computer on it informs me that GRUB didn't find the filesystem. Well, I suppose it happens.
First, I though it was due to the drive dying, but I popped it in an external enclosure and HDTune told me the drive was fine. Wanting to recover the files on the drive before reinstalling I first tried to mount it in said external enclosure under Windows (I have Win Ext2 driver installed which used to work just fine). This time, however, drive gets assigned a letter but upon opening it Windows popped up an error saying that the drive was not formatted and whether I would like to format it then.
Unfazed by this streak of failures I tried to mount it under Linux but, alas, to no avail. I might have tried every single -t operator under mount command but it still won't budge and let me mount.
