I've observed that if I copy a directory containing some files to an USB stick, files whose names are all upper-case are copied with all lowercase names. Is this expected behavior? The USB stick is shared with a Windows box.

My PC keeps crashing when copying files. The monitor displays the desktop, but the mouse doesn't move, nothing responds and I can't even ssh in to debug it.
This happens when copying files using nautilus and the command line. I'm trying to copy files from my local hard disk to an nfs drive which is mounted in my system and has been working fine for years.
how to debug this after a hard reboot?
This has only just started happening, last night was the first time.
I have a "DataTraveller" 16 GB - that gives me slower and slower speeds on copying files to it. It starts with 8-9 Mb/sec, and goes down all the time, until it's down to kb/sec.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI currently have a problem in running rsync on 64 bit Debian Jessie (although the problem also occurred with 64 bit Debian Wheezy)I am trying to use rsync to archive my home directory (which is on a hard disk) to a USB memory stick. The home directory is about 18GB in size and the memory stick has 32GB.
Unfortunately, rsync hangs after copying a certain number of files and the process eventually has to be killed. Rsync was rerun but hung again at about the same point as before.This has now happened several times. Each time the hang occurs at about the same point.Use of strace after the hang shows that rsync appears to be processing a pdf file at the time, although not always the same pdf file.I originally had the rsync hang problem on a PC which ran 64 bit Wheezy and which used a USB 2.0 port.
I now am running rsync on another PC, which runs 64 bit Jessie and which uses a USB 3.0 port..I have also tried three different USB sticks, two from one manufacturer and the third from another manufacturer.All give similar rsync hangs.
Yesterday pendrives started to misbehave when files are being copied/moved into them: after each major file (like a few hundred megabyte movie) the copying process freezes, stops and doesn't seem to proceed. After a long while (a few minutes), it unfreezes and proceeeds, only to get stuck again on another large file. Thus copying 5 movie files takes half an hour instead of just a few minutes.
The freeze occurs regardless of copying method used: mc (F5), Dolphin, command line cp or mv. During the freeze the process refuses to react to any signals, for example 'killall cp' or 'killall mc' doesn't kill the process, only 'killall -9 mc/cp' works, and also only after a short delay.
This misbehaviour continues across reboots.
What may be the cause of this? Where should I look for the source of the problem or for solution?
This has never occurred before - since I'm on llinux, copying to external devices has always been going smooth and fast. On current Debian this used to be like that as well since install untill yesterday. I don't recall doing anything special to the system yesterday or right before yesterday (I switched from Ubuntu to Debian (squeeze, AMD 64) a week ago).
I just installed Shotwell and I copied some photos from a usb stick. I set the permissions to read/write but it won't save as read/write and Shotwell won't except photos, says its unsupported.
I get this error:Error interpreting JPEG image file (Improper call to JPEG library in state 200) now I think the file was corrupted, because other files on the usb stick open OK.I deleted the file. who knows what caused the corruption.
when I am trying to copy any of my files to usb stick, it gives me this alert: the folder cannot be copied because you do not have permissions to create it in the destination.

The MP3 files 'stutter' or jumps to the next song in any music player or the copied folders are just empty. The copies are more 'reliable' when I copy album after album instead of a bulk copy of lets say 10 albums. I tested several sticks and even formatted them.

I have to check what was copied and what was ommited and fix the bad copying by copying again. The DVD is okay, it is perfectly readable. There is also plenty of memory around (8 GB). The behavior is new in Jessie, Dolphin in Wheezy used to work flawlessly.
I have met this strange behavior after copying archived data to my new Debian installation. The copyings were "huge tasks", for example 2000 files, more than 1GB total. "Small tasks" seem to copy okay. Nevertheless, the danger or missing files is annoying. What to do?
During some partitioning my Son accidentally deleted a bunch of MP3 files from his disk that he thought he'd backed up. It wasn't a big deal at the time since we listen to the same music and since he got most of those files from me in the first place (ripped my 400 CD collection a couple of years ago). So yesterday he asked me if I would copy those files for him onto a USB stick. No problem, right?
I have a 16 GB USB stick which has some backup folders and about 2.5 GB of data on it. It's formatted as NTFS.
So I created another folder on it, entitled music. Then I copied about 12.5 GB worth of MP3 music to the USB stick. No problem. When all was said and done about 1 GB of free space was remaining on the USB stick. A few minutes after the copying was completed, I used the "Remove Disk Safely" option. A small window came up, indicating that data was being written and that the stick should not be removed until the process completed. It took about 15 - 30 seconds but eventually it was finished. I could see in Nautilus that the stick had been unmounted and so I removed it from my computer.
My Son then put the USB stick in his Debian machine ... indicating to me that although there were some folders, the folder entitled music was empty. I asked him how much space was available on the stick ... he replied 1 GB ... which jives with the space that I had left after my copying. Went to his computer, and sure enough, the folders are all there, the data that was previously contained in the other folders is still there as well, but the actual music files are nowhere to be found. Then we tried using Nautilus as root, but the files still won't show up. Tried rebooting, still can't see/access those music files. Brought the stick back to my Debian system ... SAME PROBLEM THERE.
What the heck is going on? Clearly, the space of the copied 12.5 GB is being used up ... but the files are nowhere to be seen ... not even when using Nautilus as root. Disk Utility does recognize the 16 GB NTFS stick and it can be mounted/unmounted.
I installed openSUSE 11.3 with KDE4 on three different computers. Only one of them has the following problem: When I use my Sandisk Cruzer USB-stick (FAT32 formatted), copying is extremely slow. Also, the taskbarpanel notifier does not show a progressbar or a cancel button during copying. It only shows that is copying but I can not cancel. On the other two computers, the same stick works ok. The computer has the following mainboard: Asus M4A87TD/USB3

I do 'mkisofs -iso-level 1 -o image John Smith.txt'. Only an example. When I mount image, ls outputs john_smi.txt. So it has shorten to 8.3 and translated ' ' into '_'. This is in accordance with the manual, although it doesn't say the conversion will be done.

However, as it did not reject the file name, it should have converted it to all upper case, it seems to me. And -iso-level 2|3 does the same thing.

I've discovered that Dolphin seems to lose random files when copying many large folders.
I first noticed this a few months ago when I tried to copy my music library from one folder to another on the same HDD. It consisted of around 600 folders and 6500 files. During the copy there were no errors but after the copy I found that some of the newly copied folders were missing files. I put it down to human error or a glitch.
Yesterday I tried to copy 13 folders containing rips of some of my DVDs. Each folder basically had one film of either 700MB or 1.4GB. Again no errors showed up during the copy but I found 3 of the newly copied folders were empty.
It's not so critical with music or films but I can't afford to lose work data like this.
Has anyone experienced or seen a similar problem with Dolphin? I'm going to have to do some more extensive testing but this is not good.
The first time I noticed the problem I was running KDE4.3.4 (I think) and now the latest was with KDE4.4.0.

I am trying to copy a 7.3gb .iso file to an 8gb USB stick and I get the following error when it hits 4.0gb
Error while copying "xxxxxx.iso". There was an error copying the file into /media/6262-FDBB. Error splicing file: File too large The file is to be used by a windows user, and I'm just trying to do a simple copy, not a burn to USB or anything fancy. Using 10.4.1.LTS, AMD Dual Core, all latest patches.
I got some crontab records and everything works fine. I installed mail server recently and all cron notifications started to come into my inbox. I'd like to receive only notifications about cron errors. I would rather not filter all notifications off.

I'm restoring an old TI Silent 700 terminal [URL] ... and have connected it to an RPi running the debian based Jessie release using a serial converter. After learning more than I wanted to about serial settings and support I now have it interfaced and communicating bidirectionally but have one last hurdle - proper support for a single case (uppercase only) terminal in agetty.
With the -U flag on it seems like the the login name is detected as needing conversion because lowercase login names work - but lower case passwords do not and once I get a bash prompt all input comes in as upper case. So the -U agetty flag only seems to apply to login name and is then forgotten (not passed on to login process or bash?) and various settings in stty like iuclc, xcase, iexten don't seem to work.
I'd really like to get this terminal working with native support but I'll also take a kludge of some kind (I've tried a tr pipe for example).

I want to use find and scp to copy files. Is there a way to copy files that have spaces in their names? I know you can add " tags for a single file but can find do that? This is the command that i use:

I was told fedora is great operating system but all i run is into trouble, hours spend on searching for solutions and never get an easy answer as it is on Leopard or even windows 7.What's my problem. I installed a new dvd copy of fedora13, and now connected 2 USB hard drives that seem to connect fine, can access everything but if i try to copy files to one of the drives it says i don't have permissions, and the fields to change permissions access are blank.

I am running it as grsync with root authority. The only options are to preserve time, permissions, owner and group., and to produce a verose output and transfer progress. There are no exceptions specified to skip any files.
The rsync command is this:

I have run it again to give it a chance to get it right. Same result. The source is in an rsnapshot folder, but this is the first backup, the original, containing only whole files, not links.
when I try to copy files from ftp server, at some moment speed falls to 0, i recive message "copy stalled" and my system frozen.I used Opensuse 11.2 (kernel linux 2.6.31). Some people advise me to upgrade the kernel. I upgraded it to linux-2.6.34, but it did not fixe a problem.Copying from ftp is very important for me, i like opensuse, but if i will not fixe this problem, i will must to change the OS.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI had to leave rather suddenly (decision was Germany's, not fiancee's), and now am in the States again, but my files are still there. There are lots of things (mainly photos) on there, that I would like to have here. SOME stuff is on CD/DVD, but there is stuff that isn't.
Is there some way that I could access her computer and just copy files to mine?
(I picture two folders, one on hers, one on mine, and I just dragging an icon from one to the other - but I don't suppose anything's THAT easy...)
Naturally, her computer would have to be on, and I assume she could not be using it herself. Naturally also, I would get her permission first...
I assume that it would take a while, but if it were as simple as the icon thing I described above, then I could just go away and come back later. I assume something would be running to make sure that the destination file and source file were identical before proceeding to the next file.
[Before you suggest: why doesn't she just copy the files to DVD's and mail them to me? She is not all that computer saavy, I'm afraid, and trying to explain it all, including the exact folder names and such, Plus, how to use a DVD/CD burner and software... I have a new network attached storage unit that I'm trying to transfer my data to. On this NAS, it has a very basic linux installed with SSH enabled. Browsing through the programs installed on it, i found smbclient. Am I able to copy files directly from my old NAS to my new one using smbclient?It would sure beat transfering 950GB from my old NAS through a computer then onto my new NAS.

The network card activity (computer copying the files) would be dormant for 30 second to a minute and then flash rapidly for just 5 second or so. This repeated for the duration of the copying progress (approx 2 hours at a supposedly constant 5-7MB/s).
The share that I was copying to was via SSH using "connect to server" from the GNOME menu. I was expecting the see the network card activity light constantly flash. I wondered if someone could explain this strange behaviour that I have witnessed.
