Debian :: Copying Files Very Slow - Freezing After Each File
May 28, 2011
Yesterday pendrives started to misbehave when files are being copied/moved into them: after each major file (like a few hundred megabyte movie) the copying process freezes, stops and doesn't seem to proceed. After a long while (a few minutes), it unfreezes and proceeeds, only to get stuck again on another large file. Thus copying 5 movie files takes half an hour instead of just a few minutes.
The freeze occurs regardless of copying method used: mc (F5), Dolphin, command line cp or mv. During the freeze the process refuses to react to any signals, for example 'killall cp' or 'killall mc' doesn't kill the process, only 'killall -9 mc/cp' works, and also only after a short delay.
This misbehaviour continues across reboots.
What may be the cause of this? Where should I look for the source of the problem or for solution?
This has never occurred before - since I'm on llinux, copying to external devices has always been going smooth and fast. On current Debian this used to be like that as well since install untill yesterday. I don't recall doing anything special to the system yesterday or right before yesterday (I switched from Ubuntu to Debian (squeeze, AMD 64) a week ago).

I am running Ubuntu 10.10 on my workstation and have Ubuntu Server 10.10 installed on a HP Proliant MicroServer. A NFS share is configured on the MicroServer and successfully mounts from workstation PC/ Ubuntu 10.10 The issues: Copying files to an NFS share on the microserver is very, very slow. Whilst files copied to the NFS share are visible to the workstation, they don't appear when using 'ls' on the server. despite the folder owner/ user account on the Microserver and the workstation having the same name and sharing the same UID & GID (1000), copies made from the workstation have a different UID & GID

When I copy files from one partition to another, or from one drive to another, the transfer rates hover around 5-8MB/sec which is kind of slow given that all my hard drives are SATA II. I have the same problem when copying either a single file or a group of files.
I'm running openSUSE 11.2 x64 here (KDE 4.3.5) with three SATA II hard drives that are all formatted with ext3. I have dropped to the CLI and used mv and cp instead - this seems to improve things but I shouldn't have to do this.

A week ago I installed a completely new Debian Squeeze on a newly LUKS encrypted, etx3-formated notebook Acer Extensa 5220. I used main sources only and the only uncommon thing I did so far was to disable ipv6 according to the Debian guide:

I used Epiphany as my main web browser on Debian Lenny on the same Notebook. Before the last weeks before switching to the Squeeze I experianced the problem, that I couldn't display the freemail-webpage of GMX any more without crashing the browser. After installing the new system I can display GMX again, but now Epiphany freezes as soon as I open GMail. And unfortunately the browser is much slower than before on Lenny. Right now Chromium and Iceweasel are working without any problems with the same installation...

I've got a text file with a list of .gz files, these .gz files are in various sub directories of one parent directory and I've hacked this little script together to copy them from their current location to a new one and spit out any it can't find to "/home/user/not_found" but for the life of me can't get it to run properly!
The shell script as it currently looks:

I'm running squeeze on i686, my last update was this morning (9/9/2010). Running the stock kernel 2.6.32-5-686
My PC keeps crashing when copying files. The monitor displays the desktop, but the mouse doesn't move, nothing responds and I can't even ssh in to debug it.
This happens when copying files using nautilus and the command line. I'm trying to copy files from my local hard disk to an nfs drive which is mounted in my system and has been working fine for years.
how to debug this after a hard reboot?
This has only just started happening, last night was the first time.

I've observed that if I copy a directory containing some files to an USB stick, files whose names are all upper-case are copied with all lowercase names. Is this expected behavior? The USB stick is shared with a Windows box.

I currently have a problem in running rsync on 64 bit Debian Jessie (although the problem also occurred with 64 bit Debian Wheezy)I am trying to use rsync to archive my home directory (which is on a hard disk) to a USB memory stick. The home directory is about 18GB in size and the memory stick has 32GB.
Unfortunately, rsync hangs after copying a certain number of files and the process eventually has to be killed. Rsync was rerun but hung again at about the same point as before. This has now happened several times. Each time the hang occurs at about the same point.Use of strace after the hang shows that rsync appears to be processing a pdf file at the time, although not always the same pdf file.I originally had the rsync hang problem on a PC which ran 64 bit Wheezy and which used a USB 2.0 port.
I now am running rsync on another PC, which runs 64 bit Jessie and which uses a USB 3.0 port..I have also tried three different USB sticks, two from one manufacturer and the third from another manufacturer. All give similar rsync hangs.

I'm about to move a lot of folders from an older computer (sarge/etch) over to a newer with Lenny. But I get problems when I reach folders or files with names that contains nordic letters like øå. I'm using an external drive to move the folders. What is the easiest and best way to do this.

When I am copying from DVD to my comp - Dolphin copies some files and directories and some did not. I have to check what was copied and what was ommited and fix the bad copying by copying again. The DVD is okay, it is perfectly readable. There is also plenty of memory around (8 GB). The behavior is new in Jessie, Dolphin in Wheezy used to work flawlessly.
I have met this strange behavior after copying archived data to my new Debian installation. The copyings were "huge tasks", for example 2000 files, more than 1GB total. "Small tasks" seem to copy okay. Nevertheless, the danger or missing files is annoying. What to do?

I used to have Windows XP on my desktop computer which was changed to Linux 9.10 awhile back and just recently I downloaded Linux 10.04. I am having problems with my screen while viewing websites and games I play freezing up. I have also noticed that it is very slow at times downloading sites I wish to view. The sound on videos and games comes and goes. I thought by upgrading to Linux 10.04 would fix the problems, but it has not.

I recently installed Ubunto 10.10 (the netbook version) onto my Acer Aspire One Netbook. The OS it came with was a very old Red Hat, so I got rid of it. I am a complete Linux newbie, and not having the best experiences so far. Basically, the netbook is completely clean with Ubuntu just installed. It's not got any files on it or any extra software. But it runs REALLY slow.
Boots up pretty quickly, but it takes ages to do anything. It'll either just run ridiculously slowly, or it will run okay for 10 seconds and then not do ANYTHING for the next 10. I have never been able to play an MP3 track without the whole thing freezing, let alone a video. Why is it so bad? The machine's not that old (maybe a year and a half) and the OS is brand new. There's no files or added software on it. What's the problem? Is there anything I can do? It's so frustrating! And it's the the only computer I've got at the moment.

I know there were threads on USB problems already, but there does not yet appear to be a definitive solution to USB speed problems on Karmic.flash drives are very slow to copy to. running lsusb in terminal, it appears to be running at USB 1.1 speeds, but even that doesn't seem to be the whole picture. When I copy an 800mb file to the drive the first 150mb transfer in a matter of seconds, then the mb/s seems to get slower and slower, starting at about 12 and ending at about 5. If I copy multiple files to the USB at the same time the problem seems to get even worse, taking about 10 minutes to copy 1600 m/b - less than 1 mb/second.

I am trying to copy the contents of an external NTFS hard drive to my internal ext3 drive. Ubuntu 9.04. The transfer starts, then slows, then grinds to a complete halt, and has to be ended, causing icons on my desktop to disappear. Then the hard drive needs to be unplugged, then re-plugged to register in ubuntu again. Sometimes this happens first time, other times it will not register after many plug in - out cycles. Small files will copy across successfully while still in the "slowing down" phase, so I don't think it is a permissions problem. On the occasions the ntfs HD will not register in ubuntu, it makes a clicking noise when started, then spins down to silence. Could this indicate a hardware error, or is this ubuntu giving up after failed attempts to recognise it?
When trying to run files directly from the NTFS hard drive (when working correctly), it runs fine with no problems.I currently have this device plugged in via sata - usb adapter, but the same problem happened when this drive was an internal. I had planned to move all the files from the ntfs drive to my ext3, then format the ntfs drive to ext3 and copy the files back, but it looks like it's not meant to happen. Next time I can actually get ubuntu to pick it up and mount it I will try the enabling of DMA (as seen in another post), and trying to copy with rsync instead of nautilus (as seen in another post). Is there anything else it could be

With Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.0.4 I have seen that the nautilus filemanager is extremely slow with folders that contains many files or/and folders.I made sure that "Assistive Technologies" is diable. On the filemanager preference I set all preview to "Never", tried all possible views, but the filemanager remains extremely slow. It seems like it becomes even slower when the subfolders in the folder you are viewing new files are being created by for example a program. Possibly nautilus filemanager is updating continuously ?
I use to be using debian etch nautilus file manager. With the same directories, nautilus in debain etch was working much faster. But contrary to the one in Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.0.4 is is far less stable. It seems like the newer version is more stable but however extremely much slower. I was wondering if I am missing something. Or whether this is a bug. If it is a bug, then I am wondering when this is going to be solved in nautlius filemanager.

I first noticed the problem because my wireless internet will stop working. The usb stick has its LED constantly on but it fails to connect. I have tried some methods of restarting the networking, like "sudo restart network-manager", disabling and re-enabling the wireless and networking from the taskbar applet. I tried removing the module and restarting it. It might be a bigger problem because I'll find that things will randomly hand for awhile, like opening system monitor, or running terminal commands. They do eventually run but only after several minutes. A restart seems to get everything working again, but the problem comes back at random times. I am willing to solve this right now as I have time, just let me know what info you need and I will post it.
Update: Some more info I forgot to include. I am running Ubuntu 11.04. It just froze again, I tried logging in and out but the internet still wouldn't work and things were hanging, I couldn't get file manager open. I have even tried shutting down the computer and had it stall on the Ubuntu logo with the dots loading so I had to hard restart.....

I recently got my D-Link DWA-556 pci card working with my new desktop with Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit. Connection speed is good, but local network file transfer speeds are pitiful. I'm trying to copy some files from my laptop(also running 10.04) and I'm getting around 300-500 kb/s, which is actually lower than my typical download speeds. Anyone know what the problem might be? output of iwconfig is this:

I've discovered that Dolphin seems to lose random files when copying many large folders.
I first noticed this a few months ago when I tried to copy my music library from one folder to another on the same HDD. It consisted of around 600 folders and 6500 files. During the copy there were no errors but after the copy I found that some of the newly copied folders were missing files. I put it down to human error or a glitch.
Yesterday I tried to copy 13 folders containing rips of some of my DVDs. Each folder basically had one film of either 700MB or 1.4GB. Again no errors showed up during the copy but I found 3 of the newly copied folders were empty.
It's not so critical with music or films but I can't afford to lose work data like this.
Has anyone experienced or seen a similar problem with Dolphin? I'm going to have to do some more extensive testing but this is not good.
The first time I noticed the problem I was running KDE4.3.4 (I think) and now the latest was with KDE4.4.0.

I've had this odd, stubborn problem that seems to be related to the nouveau video driver and certain kernel builds: opening or saving full resolution jpeg image files using GIMP takes from 1-5 minutes and causes xorg CPU usage to reach almost 100%.This also occurs when using UFRaw to open Canon raw image files. The problem is not intermittent, it happens each time I open a file. Opening photos in the default image viewer works fine. This bug has vexed me on and off for the last couple of months, and seems to be triggered by a combination of kernel version and the Nouveau driver. I switched to Debian Squeeze from Ubuntu 10.04 because I was experiencing slow image open times in Ubuntu 10.04 (using the Nouveau driver).I did not experience the bug running Squeeze with the nv driver and kernel 2.6.32-3.
I did not have the bug running Squeeze with the nouveau driver and kernel 2.6.32-5 backported from Sid.I began experiencing the bug again after the Squeeze updates on June 14th (still running nouveau and kernel 2.6.32-5). I update daily so it's likely to be that day's updates which caused the bug to reappear.Just for grins, I installed the Liquorix kernel. The bug does not occur using kernel 2.6.34-0.dmz.10-liquorix-686 and the nouveau video driver.I have a Nvidia FX5500 video card. I prefer the nouveau driver to nv as my display seems to behave better. The Nvidia proprietary drivers are not an option because they produce X freezes when I am doing photo editing. The liquorix kernel seems to be working fine, but for long-term stability I'd rather be running a mainline Debian kernel.

Asuming I have two files, one large file and one small file, I want to write the smaller file to the large file without overwriting the remaining part of the larger file.
Both are binary files, and the large file can become very large, so I want to avoid copying the whole file, as that will take some time. Is there any standard Linux console utility to do this, or do I need to write it myself?
