Debian Configuration :: Startup Program Screen Too Small?

Oct 10, 2015

The "System Settings/Startup Programs" window is large enough but the "Program" column is too narrow and it cannot be resized. The window can be dragged to make it larger but not the individual columns. It looks like a Java listbox with "Enabled = false" set. This occurs in Debian8 64 bit and also in Mint 17 and Mint LMDE2. I am surprised nobody else has raised the issue. I have a basic setup with 22" screen and 1680 x 1050 resolution. It occurs with Nouveau and NVidia drivers. It is not a critical bug so I have coped with it for 2 years but it would be nice to see it fixed. Unfortunately I could not upload a screen shot as "board attachment quota has been reached".

Debian Multimedia :: Very Small Problem With Fglrx On Startup

Aug 16, 2011

The GRUB2 menu loads up fine, and I am logged into Gnome okay right now, but in between Grub & Gnome, I see no log messages during startup. So far, it's just an annoyance, but one of these days an automatic fsck is going to find something, and I won't be able to see it. I have a custom kernel, with fglrx compiled into it, in case that matters. This system has never used radeon drivers, so I can't add any information about how this worked before fglrx; it just didn't work without it. I saw startup messages IIRC with kernel 2.6.32 / Debian 5.0, but I couldn't tell which of the many changes led to this little malfunction. Now using Debian 6.0 / kernel 3.0.0.

Hopefully, this is just a minor glitch in Grub2 or some other .conf file, maybe in /etc/X11.

Debian :: Small Program / Large HDD Footprint

May 18, 2011

I have recently dropped to a command line to run a DB server. In attempting to write a bit of Python to do this process I went to install emacs using apt-get and noticed that the foot print of the install was going to be around 130 Mb. Likewise with a couple other programs the install size was going to be a lot larger than I anticipated. I was wondering how the footprint could be so large and is there a way to install software without this blow out. While I am happy to use vi or import the code from a desktop with a GUI I think this would be interesting to know.

Debian Configuration :: Setting Up Small Web Server With PHP And SQLite3

Apr 5, 2010

I'm trying to set up a small web server with php and sqlite support. I installed lighttpd, php5, php-sqlite3 and php5-sqlite3. Then, I enabled sqlite and pdo extensions in php.ini:
extension=pdo.so
extension=sqlite.so
extension=pdo_sqlite.so

However, when I try to open a SQLite3 database from php:
$database = new SQLiteDatabase($myDB, 666, $error);
I get the following exception:
SQLiteDatabase::__construct() [sqlitedatabase.--construct]: file is encrypted or is not a database

Some readings in the net make me think that my php settings are not compatible with SQLite3 databases. Is anyone successfully working with SQLite3 databases from PHP5 under Debian? Have you any recommendations? Should I rebuild php maybe?

Debian Multimedia :: Xorg Only Uses Small Part Of Screen?

Jun 9, 2011

After a install on a old Toshiba today everything looked fine. But when i tried to start Xorg it start but doesn't use my whole screen. It is not a resolution problem it just doesn't use the whole screen. Hopefully this explanation is understandable. On lenny i had the same issue but once i changed the console resolution size in grub everything was fine. Sadly this is not the case with squeeze. I already tried "X -configure" and had a look at the generated xorg.conf (posted below)

[code]....

After that is tried to run the generated xorg.conf but then it just frooze.

Debian :: Make Program Run On Startup In The Graphical Env

Feb 21, 2011

I have a dedicated server which runs a game server. On that dedi, I had Debian installed, and I wanted to have graphical access to it so I installed Gnome and nxserver. I want the game server to run automatically when the server boots up and have it appear in a console window when I connect to nxserver. So I added it in the Startup list by going in System > Administration > Session.

My problem is that the program doesn't start when the system boots up, but only when I connect to nxserver. So I assume it is something like gnome not starting up or opening a session until I open one remotely or something such.

But is there anyway to have that game server start in a console window when the system starts up? I tried using init.d but the problem is that it doesn't open any window, and I need to interact with the server through the console. What can I do?

Debian Configuration :: No Sshd On Startup (lenny)?

May 30, 2010

I tried recompiling a new kernel yesterday (2.6.34) on my debian sarge box, but I ran into multiple difficulties. These difficulties forced me to do a double dist-upgrade to lenny. The new kernel was (seemingly) compiled without any hiccups, and I ran dpkg -i on both the image and the header debs. They didn't install properly into grub, but I think I managed to fix that manually.Next thing I did was rebooting the server. It refused to come back up. Luckily my ISP has recovery tools, so I managed to switch back to the old kernel. It boots just fine with that kernel, but the problem is that there is no ssh daemon running! I can access it through ftp and do limited jobs through php, but nothing big, as I have no root access.Now, enough backstory. My question is: How can I install openssh-server onto the server remotely? I cannot access the server personally, as the server is in a completely different country.

Debian Configuration :: Plymouth Does Not Show Up At Startup

Oct 25, 2010

I've been trying to setup Plymouth on Debian Squeeze, but have only been partially successful: Plymouth works with shutdown (i.e. I see Plymouth after I tell the computer to shut down), but not when I start up my computer (before it reaches GDM). In other words, Plymouth seems to work with my graphics, but for some reason does not show up at startup (not even briefly, as far as I can tell). I've searched the forums and followed this advice, as well as the instructions found here: [URL] but neither of those worked. I'm running Debian Testing (Squeeze) on a Thinkpad X41, which uses "Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller" for graphics.

Debian Configuration :: Disable Wireless At Startup?

Dec 22, 2010

I've been using Debian since the early days of Lenny being testing as OS on the same Computer. Its a Acer Aspire Notebook with switches for wireless and bluetooth. While booting Lenny my wireless and bluetooth stayed off as long as I didn't switch them on. But since squeeze they get activated ( you can see it by looking at the LED's ) the moment after the grub screen. I now do have to turn bluetooth and wireless off by hand everytime which is quite annoying since I mostly use eth0.

how to disable bluetooth and wireless per default in a way I can simply turn them back on by using the switch?

I also tried setterm -blength 0, xset -b in startup scripts. They disable terminal-beeps, but not the halt or the gdm login beep. I tried wasting around with the gconftool, but nothing happened. It is an annoying sound. If you use, init 0 to shut down, no beep comes up.

Debian Configuration :: Making (PPPOE Start) Run At Startup Automatically

Feb 17, 2011

I have to use pppoe because my ISP uses service names, and as far as I know the only program which lets me input a service name is pppoe (inside the pppoe.conf file). Networkmanager is buggy because it tends to disappear from the panel periodically and, worse, it doesn't reconnect (although the option is selected, it does reconnect only once).

So, for peace of mind I open a superuser terminal and enter "pppoe-start" and "pppoe-stop" to have everything I want (reconnects automatically, etc.). Now the question is: how can I have pppoe-start run at startup, automatically, without entering superuser mode, and without having a terminal open for this? Using Debian Testing (Wheezy).

Debian Configuration :: Wheezy Xfce 4.8 VERY SLOW First Thunar Startup

May 16, 2011

I upgraded my main PC's Xfce 4.6 to Xfce 4.8 this morning.Now, every time I start Thunar for the first time after a new boot, it takes about 30 seconds to appear, and then about 10 seconds later, a second instance of it appears.After that, Thunar appears instantly every time I start it during that same session. But if I shut-down or restart my PC, Thunar again takes about 30 seconds to start up, and a second instance of it appears about 10 seconds later.

Google searches seem to indicate that people running other distros are also experiencing this problem. On advice in a different forum, I deleted the ~/.config/Thunar folder and restarted my PC, but that didn't help -- it created a new Thunar folder, but the long delay and the double-Thunars are still there every time I run Thunar for the first time in a session.

However, on initial startup, when I believe it should boot into the true GUI, it simply gives me horizontal lines that start white and then turn blue. They move slightly. The computer did have a funky graphics chip prior to install, but I am not convinced that it decided to crap out right after the install, especially considering I can see the startup procedure fine.

Programming :: Small Java Program To Manage 2 Apartments?

this is my first post and I would like to get some help from you , so what should be the answer for this question ?:::::::::::::the question::::::::::::::::THE UNIVERSITY APARTMENTSThe University Apartments provides apartment rental to university students at affordable rates, with optional facilities:Apartment Type A, 2 bedrooms and equiped with kitchen and laundry facilities. The monthly rental for the rooms in this apartment type is RM300.Apartment Type B, 3 bedrooms includes one master bedroom with attached bathroom but does not have kitchen and laundry facilities. The monthly rental for the rooms in this apartment type is RM200 and students staying in the master bedroom will be paying an additional 40%.

Each apartment may house a maximum of 3 students. Students are required to check out from the apartment unit when the current semester ends.Create an application to manage the university apartments rental:1. Register new student and assign apartment moduleRegister and assigns an apartment to the student for 140 days from the date of registration. The module should retrieve the date automatically from the system clock and calculates the expiry date for the apartment rental. Before an apartment is assigned, the system should allow the selection of the type of apartment (i.e. Type A or B), then check for the number of occupants in the apartment. If the apartment already housed 3 students, it should recommend another apartment unit that is still available. Upon registration, student should pay a RM100 for the utility charges, rental deposit for one month and the rental for the current month.

2. Update apartment status moduleWhen a student moves out from an apartment, the apartment status is updated.3. Search module Enable the administrator to search for a student's apartment unit using the student id as the search key. The search result should produce the students information and the details of the apartment that the student is staying in.The application should be developed using object-oriented concepts using Student class and Apartment class, implementing the appropriate data fields and methods for the classes. Data may be stored in collections i.e
