Debian Configuration :: Latex Styles Disappearing After Upgrade
Jan 21, 2010
I have just upgraded my system (debian testing, a lot of the upgrade had to do with latex packages). Now some latex styles have disappeared. For instance, I used to have garamond fonts installed but now they have disappeared.I have re-installed the package tex-live-fonts-extra (which contains garamond, but the command
usepackage{garamond}in my latex file always leads to the error message
ERROR: LaTeX Error: File `garamond.sty' not found.

Is there any way to set KDE styles per application? Something in the lines of:

I am a semi-noob on this and I have problems getting my emacs recognizing .tex as latex and even running latex-mode. Usually when you run latex-mode (M-x : latex-mode) emacs should switch to latex-mode, but nothing happens in my case. The menu bar still show the TeX options, highlighting remains the same etc.
I am running emacs 23.1.1 (x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 2.10.4), this is on a university system so I don't know much about it.

I'm trying to change the styles in non-KDE apps like Synaptic. Trying to do away with the think borders within the app box. I downloaded a bunch of GTK files and the GTK icon shows in the System Settings, but can't get the styles to change even after restarting KDE.

I'm trying to use emacs in the auctex mode. But Flymake complains about something I could not understand. This is the error it shows whenever I open a tex file.
Code:
Flymake:Configuration error has occured while running (texify --pdf --tex-option=-c-style-errors PATH_TO_FILE_DIRECTORY/FILE_flymake.tex).
Flymake will be switched OFF.
I have texify installed on my system. I also tried suggestions in the emacs wiki on FlymakeTex, added the following lines in my .emacs file:
Code:
(defun flymake-get-tex-args (file-name)
(list "pdflatex" (list "-file-line-error" "-draftmode"
"-interaction=nonstopmode" file-name)))
How do I stop this msg and use flymake.

I have a MyBookLive where i installed a Debian 2.6 kernel. The system is running fine so far. Because of an error message when apt-get upgrade (udev) i tried to upgrade to 3.16. Here's what i did:
- apt-get install linux-image-xx
- apt-get install linux-source-xx
- extract the source
- copied the old .config from running 2.6 kernel over to the 3.16 directory
- make oldconfig
- make uImage
- make modules
- make modules_install
- copied uImage to /boot
No error messages because its a headless device - its just not booting up.

I have a system that was upgraded from Debian 7 to 8. Unfortunately it is not able to boot from the new kernel 3.16. Only the old 3.2 kernel is able to boot. After I did a safe-upgrade on my lenny system, clamav is now broken, which is quite a pain since my e-mail flow is now failing.
I get this in the log. CLAMAV: couldn't connect to: /var/run/clamav/clamd.ctl:
I have volatile in the list, and clamav is also installed from volatiel of what I can see, so what went wrong? Is the package broken?

1) old a1300 laptop: P3 800, 256 MiB RAM, HDD, PC-CARD NIC. from lspci: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8169 Gigabit Ethernet (rev 10) with debian (i386), previously lenny, now squeeze. running as server.
[Code]...
Smaller files seem to transfer faster, but I have no idea why. I've checked with ethtool that both NICs are running at 1000Mb/s, and both are connected to the same Gigabit switch. The HDD in the laptop had previously provided (nfs) transfer speeds of 12-13 MiB/s. The options in fstab on the client are what I've changed them to since, while trying to fix the problem. Can't remember exactly what they were, but rsize, wsize and nfsvers are some I put there trying to fix it.
I had considered buying a new, faster HDD for the laptop, but that is certainly out of the question until this is resolved. Edit: Is this the right place to ask about this? I did wonder if the 'General Questions' category was a better fit.

I was experiencing some latency issues when loading KDE on my (squeeze) HTPC box, so I decided to replace the system drive with one that was a bit faster (and larger). Faced with the unpleasantness of having to repeat the many troubleshooting and configuration issues I had with the previous installation, I decided to copy a known good installation. As it turned out it didn't make much difference. I still spent several hours reconfiguring screen and font resolutions, setting up a wireless bridge, removing unnecessary server components, reconfiguring apt proxy settings, resetting hostname and IP addresses, and getting passthrough audio working again.
Anway, once completed, the system was much more responsive, so I was happy--until I tried to burn an ISO to the DVD. When K3b loads it informs me that it is missing several necessary applications, including cdrecord, cdrdao, mkisofs, etc. All the necessary applications were installed and working on the original system which I copied. I verified their existence on the new installation via "aptitude search <packagename>". I even performed a reinstall of said packages. Nevertheless, K3b refuses to detect their existence.Just to be clear, all my boxen are built to standard. Same motherboard, same CPU, same memory, same HDDs, same DVD burners. I do this purposely to avoid just these sorts of issues. I don't see how a working configuration on one machine can fail on another. I am beginning to believe that this is yet more evidence to support my theory that the universe is not only unpredictable, but arbitrary and inconsistent and possibly even perverse.

Intel Core i7-5500U with Intel HD Graphics. So I updated to the backports kernel and backports intel xorg drivers and I have the weirdest thing.Everything is stuttery even cinnamon desktop effects are no longer smooth. If I boot back to 3.16, everything is butter (except the screen corruption). Even my favorite wine game dropped 25% in fps.
I remember that on windows, if the cpu is too slow (pstate_min_speed), graphics is also stuttery. However, increasing /sys/devices/system/cpu /intel_ pstate/min_perf_pct even to 100% didn't do the trick. I suspect, that this measure is causing it: URL....
how to increase the performance again? I just found out, after running glxgears (with about 40 fps), that xrandr shows an available framerate of 40fps
xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 8 x 8, current 1920 x 1080, maximum 32767 x 32767
eDP1 connected primary 1920x1080+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 293mm x 165mm
1920x1080 60.00*+ 59.93 40.00
I guess that's what makes it feel slow. Do you know how to get that back up to 60 (fixed)? It seems like the screen refresh rate set in xrandr has no effect on the problem. When I boot, glxgears runs with 60 fps and everything is fine. After a while, it drops to 40 and the whole desktop keeps stuttering. if I change the resolution with xrandr and then change it back, it goes to 60 again for a while
LVDS_DOWNCLOCK is disabled

Today I fresh installed the latest stable version of debian (jessie) with gnome from the USB DVD image for a 64bit machine. Everything got fine except the graphic driver, I think.
Now Gnome 3 is running but graphic is super slow. My previous debian/gnome 3 ran much better and I think there is a problem with the graphic driver.
I'm on an thinkpad t61.
Processor: Intel Core2 Duo CPU T7500 @ 2.20GHz × 2
Ram: 4GB
Graphic: VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (primary) (rev 0c)
Now the graphic is: Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 3.5, 128 bits) which is likely wrong. If I'm not mistaken llvmpipe is pure slow software acceleration.
Moreover this was different on my previous debian (wheezy), which was faster. Anyway I don't know what " Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 3.5, 128 bits) " is and it was for sure different in wheezy.
According to apt-get I have the latest intel graphic divers installed. So maybe this an X-org confic problem?

I upgraded my server yesterday via apt-get and my Perl scripts are not able to make HTTPS connections due to certificate verification problems.
This seems to be a problem for EVERY HTTPS site.
CURL gives the following error:
Code: Select allSSL certificate problem: unable to get local issuer certificate
I know that this has something to do with root certificate updates, but if I sound ignorant about it, it's because I am.
using CURL with the -k option allows the connection to be made.
I'm running OpenSSl 1.0.1k-3+deb8u2 on Jessie 8.2.
I would obviously prefer to not disable certificate verification on my server.

Basically, I have no trouble booting off a really old kernel like 2.6.18-6. If I try to boot off the newest one installed with Lenny, I get errors such as "mounting /dev/ on /root/dev failed...ditto for /sys on /root/sys" almost as if it's failing to find the drive. This finishes up with "target filesystem doesn't have /sbin/init" and I'm dropped into a busybox shell. It's an ordinary SATA drive, which is being used as an OS drive only. It seems as if something has changed with the newer kernel, but I have no idea where to start or what to look for.

I have a problem. I'm using the latest Debian stable, Lenny. I am trying to get my usb wifi card working.
The Debian wiki advised me to upgrade my kernel to 2.6.30 using backports, because the drivers for my wifi chip are supposedly in the newer kernel.
So thats what I did. The install went fine. However, after rebooting the computer hangs when it is starting gdm. Only the desktop background appears with some fuzzy stripe over it, the mouse doesn't respond. Pressing ctrl+alt+f1 does nothing. I can only restart with ctrl+alt+del.
I can still use the computer with the old kernel. No problems there. I tryed disabling GDM and rebooting again with the new kernel. It boots up and works fine on command line. However when I type startx it hangs, just like before.
I'm not an expert, but I'm suspecting there might be problems with the graphic drivers in the new kernel.
When I installed lenny at first, X started fine. However 3d acceleration was not functioning. I got help from IRC, I had to install some package to enable direct rendering. Don't remember which one anymore.
Here's what lspci gives for VGA:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Rage 128 PF/PRO AGP 4x TMDS

I had some problems about a week ago with installing Python2.6-minimal (as an issue, it got resolved), however, after the problem was resolved, 'Add/Remove Applications' disappeared after upgrade was complete. I usually do not use this program for installing, etc., if I can help it, but do use it more often for web address reference when I am considering installing a new program, etc. Question is,is there some way to find out if it is merely lurking somewhere in my system... & then to once again add it to my menu list? Or, if that is not the case, to reinstall it via apt-get, aptitude, or some way like this? I could not find this application (or whatever it is called) in the Synaptic Package Manager.

I have a Dell Mini 9 with a Broadcom wireless adapter. I've had it working for months on Debian Sid, but recently I updated the entire OS to get KDE 4.4 (I also went from a 2.6.30 to a 2.6.32 kernel). Something in that upgrade caused wireless to cease to work properly. The problem is similar to the one described in this thread, but no resolution is mentioned there: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=50892 I've gone through all the steps to install the STA drivers/wl module for it, and it basically appears to be working. Using wicd, I can see all the wireless networks in the area.
The problem occurs when trying to connect. When I try to connect to my WPA wireless network, it eventually fails claiming a bad password. When I turned the wireless network into an unsecured network, it eventually fails claiming it's unable to get an IP. I've also tried at the command line with wpa_supplicant and it initially appears to work but in fact it hasn't. I've also got Kubuntu 10.04 installed on this machine, and it can connect without issue (using the proprietary driver that Ubuntu's hardware driver manager allows one to use).Does anyone know what has caused this? I even tried the earlier kernel, so that's not it.

I am trying to upgrade a Debian 4 server to v5 with the instructions from document. However, I am having trouble with getting an installed package upgraded to the latest version for the current release (see error below). And I am afraid to upgrade the distribution if I can't get this package to upgrade. One thing I did notice in the error was, "Aborting downgrade from (at least) 5.1 to 5.0". The dpkg --get-selections command showed that both MySQL 5.0 and 5.1 were installed (I don't know how or why, as I was not the one to setup this server), but 5.0 was the one running. So I've since uninstalled v5.1 but that error still shows up when I try to do an apt-install upgrade. I don't know that this is what is causing the package upgrade to fail but I thought it worth mentioning.

My version of Squeeze was about half a year old when I updated/upgraded it just now. As part of the (longish) process I was advised to run apt-get autoremove, which removed what looked like a stunning amount of material. As another part I noticed a huge number of error messages about nonexistent locale files (I think) whizzing by.
Well, the result has various cosmetic changes and no doubt fewer bugs, but it doesn't have WLAN. I used to see an icon at the top right like two tadpoles chasing each other, turning into a set of green (if I was lucky) or grey (if not) bars. No longer. No tadpoles, no bars, no error message, nothing.
This very recent thread ("Just isntall debian 6.0, wired networking ok but no wireless") looks helpful. However, I don't know what WLAN hardware I've got or how to get a text dump of this kind of thing. 4D696B65 kindly points the person who asked to wiki.debian.org/ipw2200. I don't know whether I have any of these "Intel PRO/Wireless 2100, 2200 and 2915 devices" but I'm encouraged to read there that [the file] is now also available in the nonfree-firmware tarball which we build regularly on cdimage.debian.org. Supply this blob on a CD/floppy/USB drive etc. and d-i will do the right thing. I don't know what either "blob" or "d-i" means, but I was rather hoping that some software or other would look at the hardware, look at the available firmware, and install accordingly (as happened months ago). So got the (small) file; I opened it up; I copied the contents to a CD (even though it's not an ISO). But apt-cdrom add is not interested.
