Ubuntu :: Empathy Messenger - Contacts Management - Cannot Get The 'ungrouped' List Empty
Jan 8, 2011
I am using Empathy messenger 2.32.1 on Ubuntu 10.10. The issue I have is that try as I may, I cannot get the 'ungrouped' list empty i.e. there are always 6-7 contacts during every empathy login session that show up as 'ungrouped' even though I specifically grouped them into a user-defined group during the last empathy login session. For e.g. I login into gmail and facebook during session-A and classify all my 'ungrouped' contacts into relevant groups. I logout and log back in to session-B, and now I still see some of my grouped contacts go back into the 'ungrouped' pile.
I have been using Ubuntu 10.10 for a few weeks now (have been using Ubuntu/Linux on and off for quite a while). I had to work around some things for a while to get it correctly partitioned with Windows 7 and what not which led to me formatting and reinstalling a few times to get it just right. Along the way, I was able to upgrade my Empathy messenger from 2.32.1 to 2.32.2. I loved the upgrade as it has the notification icon for me installed which is much nicer than the colored envelope when someone sends me a message. I have tried to upgrade to it recently and it is not allowing me to do so. Can anyone help me upgrade back to 2.32.2 from 2.32.1?
The title says it all really. I run Empathy, have used it for a while with both Google-chat and MSN protocols. I've been using it for a few months now and suddenly my MSN contacts have all disappeared.
People are able to contact me via MSN, and when their message window pops up I am able to respond. It says they are offline however.
I have tried listing all offline contacts but they still do not appear in the list.
I have tried uninstalling (including config files) and reinstalling but this wasn't successful either. When I reinstalled it still had details of my accounts so clearly the cofig files were not removed properly.
I'm very new to Ubuntu. Short of using it as a boot system to recover Windows installations I spent the time to fully integrate. After a recent Windows 7 (shell32.dll error) I decided to back up all my information and move over to Ubuntu 10.10 with a Windows 7 Dual-Boot and after some setup I'm really loving it!
Since I'm a web developer that works with Linux/php on a regular basis I figured setting up Ubuntu with a /var/www partition for server testing would be ideal. ^_^
I used the search on this forum a lot and I see how friendly and helpful the Ubuntu community is, making newcomers integrate very well. So thank you very much for all your helpful answers!
Now the issue (a simple one): I'm trying to figure out how to display my contacts in Empathy in the upper right taskbar when I click my empathy logo. It says "Available, Away, Busy, etc" but I would like to display available contacts when I click there... is there any way to do this?
I tried linking my MSN account to Empathy Messenger for the first time - all went well But.I went to my friends house the next day and he told me that my MSN account status on his Windows PC MSN was continuously logging in and out. My computer had been switched off all morning and only used the night before. I went home logged on to Ubuntu 10.10 Empathy and I was logged off - I logged on and then logged off and rang my friend he told me that My status was now showing "That I was away"
I have dual boot system (xp) I went and changed my MSN password and question- should I be concerned is this a known software glitch/ security issue?
After moving from 9.04 to 10.04, the single most annoying issue for me is Empathy. Yes, it doesn't pop up a new window when a new message arrives. Yes I missed few messages because of that (no, turning the small "mail" icon to green doesn't get my attention as much as a new window). But, I can live with this.
The real issue for me is it shows Offline contacts as Online. Let's start Empathy and let's say you have 10 contacts as Online. If one of them goes Offline, Empathy still shows the contact as online. You will only find this out when you try to send a message.
My laptop is dell vostro 3500, I am using ubuntu 10.10 marvic amd64 operating system.I have installed empathy instant messenger. And I added yahoo chat. from that yahoo account I want use the audio/video call. But I was unable use that feature.
I can't send or receive any files with the Empathy Messenger in F12, using the MSN Protocol. The Menu Entry "Send File" in Active Chat remains grey. When my Friends send me files they ask me to accept the Download but I see nothing.

After installing all possible backend needed to create accounts, I was able to create my yahoo account, but when I try video calling my friend how uses m$n on xp, I get the message "connecting....." but on my friend's pc It doesn't show that I'm calling him. Can I have video calls with contacts using another IM software using my yahoo account?
I'm new to Debian, but have used Ubuntu so I'm relatively familiar with APT. Ubuntu doesn't have backports, though, and I can't figure this out. I've checked the documentation for the answer, and I'm hoping that I'm just overlooking something simple.
I'm running lenny, and I want to install the Empathy instant messenger that's in lenny-backports (v. 2.26.2-1). I already have the stable package installed, and here's what happens when I try to upgrade:
michael@archimedes:~$ sudo apt-get -t lenny-backports install empathy Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done empathy is already the newest version. 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 118 not upgraded.
6. uuidgen should be present on your linux box. you can have other validations and field too as per your need. but these three fields worked best for m
7. ./a.out contact.csv output.vcf Now in evolution go to Contacts->File Import->Import single file, select output.vcf and File type as vcf.
I am having a tough time trying to get Empathy to download a list of rooms. Typing /list does nothing in Empathy's join room. How the hell do I get the IRC room list? I'm about ready to go back to a dedicated IRC client.
I get ubuntu 10.04 LTS installed on my PC and laptop , and I tried ubuntu one.It worked and I want to have a test, so I removed the two devices that already subscribed to my ubuntu one account, after that, I found I can't get them subscribed back.Everytime I start ubuntu one preference , I'll get the error message: got empty result for devices list. How can I add my two devices back to my ubuntu one account (I googled a lot and found that someone pointed that delete the ubuntu one's key will work, so if this is the right solution, how to delete it?
I've always used empathy as an MSN client and everything has always worked fine. Since a week ago (or something more) my on-line contact list has become empty, all of my contacts are marked as off-line. I checked at meboo and I had a lot of on-line contacts, so it must be an empathy issue. I wouldn't want to change messaging client, I like the way empathy integrates the gnome desktop.
During 10.04 install I ran into an error every time I tried to install packages, so I just skipped the step figuring I'd do it later.Boot up, nothing but the cd in /etc/apt/sources.list. Does anyone know where I can find the default sources.list?
Sometimes my user list is empty on start-up. When it happens the buttons beneath the empty list (shutdown, suspend and restart), are not responding. As a work-around I login to the first terminal as root to restart the machine and usually my normal user account appears back on the list. This morning the reboot work-around didn't work any more..
Everytime I login the SELinux Troubleshooter panel applet alerts me that I have 1 alert to view, however when I click on the icon and bring up the Troubleshooter there are no alerts

I just completely put Ubuntu on my laptop and I am looking for a replacement MSN messenger that allows multi-session. Basically, in most of the WLM versions of MSN Messenger it allows Multi-session, as in I can login into the same MSN account on both my desktop (Windows) and my laptop (Ubuntu). Both Pidgin and Empathy don't, and rather going through all of them I thought I'd ask here.
Something has gone wrong Sorry about that. This problem has been reported to Ubuntu One engineers and we'll fix it as quickly as possible. This may be a temporary problem, so try again in a few minutes.
It's been like this ever since I first tried to use it (about a year or so now). I'm not sure how to help to get it fixed.
