Debian :: Any Compressed Format Download Option Rather Than ISO?
Feb 6, 2009
I have a limited bandwidth and I want to download all 4 DVDs of debian 4.0r6 in a compressed format (something like bzip2, tar, ...) that contains the ISO files? Any site that distributes debian in this way?

I was trying to figure out how to generate compressed files in zip format and searched on here. The search produced a list of forum entries on the topic, but all of the instructions were on how to do it in terminal, how to download obscure programs and install them from terminal, then run them from terminal, with all these arcane sets of switches and parameters. Eesh.
It comes with Ubuntu, after all. In the case of zipping files, all you have to do is to go to the File Manager, find the file(s), select it or them, right-click on it or them, and select Compress and file type zip. It's so simple.
There have been a number of other tasks where I wind up spending hours figuring out how to implement the advice offered in these forums through Terminal. The folks who offer the advice often are so good at it that they leave out steps obvious to them, but that take a lot of work for somebody not as skilled at it to find out. After crawling through broken glass to get the job done, and normally screwing something up so it's not quite right once I get it going, I figure out how to do it through the GUI and find out it takes a fraction of the effort.

when I go to download 11.3 I am presented with the installation medium for a DVD installation with a button that says download DVD. Should there be an option to download an ISO option for a CD installation on this page along with the DVD version? Some of our older machines can only read CD's with a max size of 500+ megs.

I would like to disable the option to format a hard drive on the drop down menu in computer. The reason being is that it is too close to the safely remove hardware option. I have one drive with about 15 years of stuff on it that I just use as a backup, and I don't want to accidentally hit the wrong button. What I was thinking of doing is going to that section of code and commenting that line out (that way I can just uncomment it if I want to format with the GUI tool). where can I find the code for that module?

I have a Live install of ubuntu 10.04 on a USB drive which is really handy. I've changed some things around so it's just how I like it.However, if for example I'm using a computer running windows, and I plug this USB stick in, a popup appears asking me if I want to reformat the drive. I'd much rather not have this appear because an accidental misclick would make me have to do all the work of reinstalling/customizing my USB.
I know how to turn of the popup for a particular machine, but I was wondering if it's possible to deny permissions to format the USB if it's plugged into any computer. Best case scenario would be if you were to plug the usb into any computer and click 'format' you would get a message prompting for a password first (not the one for the computer, one relative to the USB) or something like that.

I'm running rsync and outputting the log to a file using --log-file option. I am also using the --link-dest option, which in turn is adding the hard link creation output for EVERY file in the log file. I want to ONLY show the actual file transfer (if any) that take place.
In the 'log format' section of rsyncd man page here I assume you can do this, I just can't make sence about the code. If someone has better experience with reading it, can you please assist ?

I have two Debian machines running Squeeze x86 and x86_64.
I am having difficulties to untar a file in x86_64, although it is working in x86.
I made sure file is the same and the md5 match in both machines.
It seems like something special in x86_64 is causing it to fail.

When using the Yast partitioner to partition a USB stick, I noticed there was no option for the ntfs format, but has the fat option. Is this a missing functionality/lib or by design? I have all of the ntfs stuff installed. I used to use gparted for this, but decided to make my self use the Yast tools. I like to keep them in ntfs format to get around the 4GB data transfer limit and have them readable by Linux and Windows.

I hope this is the right place to post it My problem is when I try to install A msn, I can't see the download or install option. I only see the "use this source"button. Idk how to download it then. I hope it isn't a problem that i installed ubuntu on a usb stick. Cause it doesn't have a big enough hard drive and I can only overwrite windows when I have a usb-cdrom player that I get next week.
Stefanoviche It isn't my computer but from a friend, so maybe i react late cause i don't have the computer in my house :S Ow and when I try to install ubuntu netbook it gives a error

The problem I have is that when trying to convert the files to another format or open them with a video editing program I get messages such as "Invalid data found when processing input" I used a FireFox plug-in called "video downloadhelper" to save the video files to my local ubuntu PC and this saved them as *.wmv files. If I double click the file name then the Totem Mplayer opens up and plays the video OK. The one strange thing is that the file sizes seem to be quite small for what I would expect, for example, a 1 minute video clip is showing with a file size of 145 bytes (not kb or mb but bytes) but they do play OK with the Totem MPlayer.
I have tried converting them to AVI using both FFMpeg and WinFF and both give the same message about "Invalid data found when processing input". Also, if I copy the files to a windows PC and try to open them up with a video editing program such as Sony Vegas this also fails to recognise the files. Finally, if I try to play the files on a windows PC with VLC Player, or GOM Player or Windows Media Player none of them can play the files.

Im trying to install ubuntu with windows xp, but I only have 1 disk. People at irc told me i Could make a new partition in this same disk without having to format the whole drive.. and this option should appear at the setup, but i dont have that option, it only show the option to format the drive or "do something else", And here i cant see anything that let me use the free space i have in the windows partition to make a new one...
my ntfs partition has at least 35gb contiguous free space of 200gb free so i thought i could use this to make a new partition, but idk how,

I have been using Wubi for a few weeks now and I am really impressed. I have endured a lot of problems with grub and kernel problems etc but now realise that its just the Wubi inside windows! I have it all set up with the cube to perfection and all drivers are running great after a bit of tweaking. So a bit of a lazy question really, can I install it properly onto my drive, and retain all the hard work I have put in setting it up? I have tried, but when it comes to selecting the drive that the Wubi is installed on it just says format with no backup option.

I am trying to create an Ubuntu install disk from a downloaded ISO. Evrey time I have tried (3 or 4 times now) to DL the iso I get a compressed folder with a zillion files (including WUBI installer). However there is no actual iso in the compressed folder any where. I have tried DL'n it from the direct link as a windows handled DL and I have DL'd it using BitTorrent.
I am trying to DL and burn the iso on a Window$ XP box. Could my problem be that my browser is auto detected and I get the wubi install DL? Is WinRar messing with me? Am I just lame and even though when I launch 'Infra Recorder' and it can't see any ISO's anywhere in the decompressed Ubuntu, install/iso download, there is a magic manner in which you burn the image that I just don't get?
I just want to install Ubuntu on an older box and play with it. Then I am thinking I might like to reformat my laptop and make it dual boot with ubuntu as default load. But I can't even seem to figure out how to burn an install disk ?

I have problem to mount a compressed (ISZ) image under Linux, which was created by e.g. UltraISO? I am aware about user-space fuseiso, but it fails to mount these images, as I have reported in Debian bugtracker (correct me if I ddi something wrong). I ask the community for a help: I need a proved solution to mount these images without decompressing them.I believe that CONFIG_ZISOFS kernel option cannot help, as it refers a special RockRidge extension (per-file compression with mkisofs -z or mkzftree).
