I would like to run Blender (3D modelling software) on RedHat Enterprise. I have a problem with missing libraries (libavutil50.so). Second problem is that I have no root access so I cannot install rpm package with libavutil50.so. Does anybody knows how can I manage this? Is it possible to install somehow libavutil50.so in my /home folder, that Blender will have an access to this library ?
when I go to download 11.3 I am presented with the installation medium for a DVD installation with a button that says download DVD. Should there be an option to download an ISO option for a CD installation on this page along with the DVD version? Some of our older machines can only read CD's with a max size of 500+ megs.
I have just installed XBMC (yum install xbmc) and noticed that the option where you can control it via the HTTP protocol is gone. Just as a curiosity I have installed it on my windows machine and the http server option is there. Does anyone knows what you have to do to fix this?
For some reason, my latest Fedora 11 install + yum update does not seem to have the option to connect to a Windows Share in the drop down list when I select Connect to Share. I'm using gnome.Does anyone have any ideas which packages provide this functionality.
I'm running sed in WinXP on a text file using a script file. Every time I run it I get an unknown option to 's' error:C:Program FilesGnuWin32in>sed -f jagerize.sh input.txt>output.txtsed: file jagerize.sh line 22: unknown option to 's' I've tried two different implementations of sed, with the same result. Deleting the offending line in the script file still produces the same result (as the next line has the same syntax). I'm guessing the problem has something to do with WindowsXP, but I'm a complete newbie with sed and Linux.Here is the script file I am using:
Supposedly, the person who used to manage the server set up an admin account before they left, but when I try to log in to it I get the error:Your home directory is listed as:'/home/username'but it does not appear to exist. Do you want to log in with the / (root) directory as your home directory?It is unlikely anything will work unless you use a failsafe session. I've browsed a couple other topics with similar problems and tried some of what was suggested, but I haven't gotten anywhere.
why my df -h command is telling me I'm missing 18G?

This was 'df -h /home' straight after a fresh install. It says it's 357G in size, but even though 272M is in use, it's telling me I have only 339G left available. Where did that extra 18G go?

I want to use samba for file sharing like on a Windows home network. Actually they are all Linux machines but nfs is too complicated. On my host machine I installed samba and system-config-samba. I created a new share for /home, check marked writable and visible and put access to everybody. For preferences-->server settings--> security the "authentication mode" is set to user, encrypt passwords is no, and guest account is no guest account. Under preferences-->samba users I added myself as a user with the same windows user name as my Linux user name and the same password.
My client is a virtualbox fedora (used for testing purposes but actual clients will be real computers on my home network). I entered the address smb://192.168.1.184. When asked for the user name and password I put my regular user name and password since that was what I set in samba users. However, the password dialog keeps coming up and won't let met into my own computer. If I quit it says something like access is denied. How can I get my home network back? I liked this feature when my home computers ran XP but I switched them to Fedora 12.

For some of the above a 10kb file was created, where the expected file would be about 250MB. I dont think it has anything to do with the user's rights, because I think I have them all.
The onlything I could find after scrubbing the internet is once ina while there's a missing bracket. But I have checked and triple checked my config files and the syntax and can't find anything wrong. I have another installation of bind9 running on Fedora and the same exact syntax works just fine.
I am getting this error "Unknown filter "police", hence option "rate" is unparsable. This is in Linux Kernel 2.6 which is compiled with the "policing" option enabled in Qos (Kernel config). The error seems to be coming from the file tc.c in iproute2/

This is called from get_filter_kind() which is called from tc_filter_modify(), called from do_filter(), from do_cmd() from main()...all in tc.c. Is this a known "bug" in iproute2+2.6 as the 2.4 Kernel works with the same settings?

but something a lot of folks may not be aware of -- you don't have to go messing around over in /usr/share/fonts anymore if you've got a single-user type machine and just want some fonts for your personal desktop.Since I wipe most partitions when I upgrade (/home is on a separate one) this makes the fonts stay with my login. This is GNOME specific, I do believe KDE has a control panel to install fonts.

I am trying to sort out a problem with my mum's Ubuntu 9.10. On my laptop, the internet is working fine and is really really fast but on my mum's laptop it is very slow. I tried doing an update and they were unsurprisingly slow as well. I need when I tried to install, they took ages, they kept saying download rate: unknown.
I downloaded and burnt the ISO imagw of Fedora 15 onto a CD. I wanted to try Fedora 15 before installing. So, I booted from the CD. However, in the list of Applications, I do not find Libreoffice Suite. Wil I need to download Libreoffice separately after installing Fedora 15?
I've recently upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 (a bit late, I know), but have been getting repeated messages telling me that the filesystem is running low on space.
I've run apt-get autoremove and autoclean, but there is still insufficient space for me to upgrade to 11.04.
Whilst looking through the /home folders, I came across a number of 2 character titles folders in the /home/user directory. These have the extension.file. Does anyone know what they are, and can I delete them?

I recently switched from Windows to Linux (using Fedora 13 at the moment). I managed to get most things working, but there is one last thing that I'd love to get working: amBX (more info: here). After some searching I found a few guides on how to install it (like this guide: link) I know that one is for Ubuntu, but I can't find any for Fedora, so I used that one as a general guideline. This guide (and the others that I found) require installing Boblight (website here). Compiling Boblight requires several dependencies, but I can only get two of the required dependencies. I used the following code to install the dependencies:

I've been using Ubuntu for the past 4 years or so and would like to give Fedora a try. I have a question - should I decide to ditch Ubuntu for Fedora I will want to install but keep my Home folder.Normally whenever I've reinstalled Ubuntu I've installed over top of my existing installation. I have 3 partitions: 1 - Root 2 - Swap 3 - Home
When I reinstall I normally format root and swap but keep home and choose my usual user name. hen I boot up after install all my settings for all my apps are retained.
If I install Fedora this way (keeping Home while formatting Root and Swap) will I get the same results?

I don't have a "CPU MHz" line in my /proc/cpuinfo. I wonder if this is because I installed a 32-bit Ubuntu (10.10, Maverick) on 64-bit (dual core) AMD hardware. Various apps depend on the "CPU MHz" value and simply refuse to run without it. Is it, indeed, a 32-bit software on 64-bit hardware thing? If so, is there any fix short of replacing (clean-installing) the whole system in 64-bit?
