Debian :: No Decompress In Nautilus Since Jessie?
May 20, 2015In the past (with Wheezy and before) I often used "decompress" via double click on compressed folders or "compress" via right click on folders (or files) in Nautilus. Since I installed Jessie this option has vanished. I added several packages like "zip", "7z", "unzip" and so forth. Now I can do similar things via command line, but I just don't find any option anywhere to enable compressing and decompressing in Nautilus again. There seem to be no options for configuring such things in Nautilus.
I have the odd feeling my Jessie installation is broken since many little things are missing from the beginning. Should the old behaviour of Nautilus be standard in Jessie also?

Jan 3, 2011I have recently upgraded to Bugzilla3 and I wanted to restore my bugzilla database with my backup but when I attempt to tar -xvvzf file.tgz I get the error:
gzip: stdin: not in gzip format
tar: Child returned status 1
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors
My script that creates the backup is:

Software :: How To Edit The Initrd.img (decompress And Compress)
Oct 18, 2010I need to recreate my initrd.img after having extracted its contents. Bash by itself; pointing me to similar threads in this forum and google are useless to me and a waste of everyone's time as that has all failed. I need a working example. Apparently, I am supposed to use this bash command (s): "zcat ../initrd.gz | cpio -i -d." The preceding command is unintelligible to me. I cannot compress the initrd.img file and folders back into an initrd.gz file with a compression level of 9, so that I can rename with a .img extension.
My understanding of recompressing folders back into the initrd.img: Google and this forum all point to bash involving either zcat or cpio and then gzip with a compression level of 9. However, I require exacting instructions for using these commands to compress the folders that have been extracted from the initrd.img back into one homogenous initrd.gz archive so that that the created initrd.gz can be renamed initrd.img
Note: posting bash without that an example is a waste of everyone's time as I found that on Google and it was useless as I lack the requisite computer science degree or years of Linux guru experience needed to figure out how to specify the arguements proprerly. What I need is a working example, not just bash.
Note2: To save time, the answer to why I need to edit the initrd.img is this: Two different utilities (based upon the same parent system & kernel) use the same initrd and the same file paths. When they are installed on separate partitions and the one farthest from the mbr is selected for boot, it will begin to boot and then switch to the one closest to the mbr, which results in a failed boot. If one is removed, the other boots fine, so it's not a menu.lst or a lilo config problem.
General :: Decompress A Tar File - Butrun Out Disk Space
Feb 7, 2011I'm running a virtual machine of CentOS 3 and I am trying to decompress a tar file, but I run out disk space. I created the VM with 80 GB of disk space. When I look at the partititions, (du command) I have /dev/sda2 with a partition of 70GB mounted on /home with < 1% used.
Here comes the n00b question: How do I use the 70GB of space on sda2? I thought working in the /home directory, where sda2 is mounted, would give me access to that disk space, but the tar files fill up the /boot partition.

Apr 8, 2011I have tried to plan my backup plans. As I want it simple I am gonna use only tar.gz combination of some files that are important. My question then is the following:
-I have a 100GB hard disk with 20Gb free space only. I would like to backup the rest 80Gb to an external hard disk. I run my scripts which end up saving a 75Gb(due to compression) to my external hard disk.
-->Then comes the times to try to see the contents of my archive (just to make sure that I can recover what is inside the 75GB disk file). Do you know if tar.gz needs to decompress the 75Gb file in some /tmp space in my hard disk for showing me the contents inside it? In that case it will not be easy at all to ever look at what is inside it in my hard disk, as there is no 80Gb of free space in my hard disk (20gb only).
Ubuntu :: No ISO In Compressed DL Folder?
Mar 12, 2010I am trying to create an Ubuntu install disk from a downloaded ISO. Evrey time I have tried (3 or 4 times now) to DL the iso I get a compressed folder with a zillion files (including WUBI installer). However there is no actual iso in the compressed folder any where. I have tried DL'n it from the direct link as a windows handled DL and I have DL'd it using BitTorrent.
I am trying to DL and burn the iso on a Window$ XP box. Could my problem be that my browser is auto detected and I get the wubi install DL? Is WinRar messing with me? Am I just lame and even though when I launch 'Infra Recorder' and it can't see any ISO's anywhere in the decompressed Ubuntu, install/iso download, there is a magic manner in which you burn the image that I just don't get?
I just want to install Ubuntu on an older box and play with it. Then I am thinking I might like to reformat my laptop and make it dual boot with ubuntu as default load. But I can't even seem to figure out how to burn an install disk ?

Feb 26, 2010I have been having a recurring problem backing up my filesystem with tar, using bzip2 compression. Once the file reached a size of 4Gb, an error message appeared saying that the file was too large (I closed the terminal so do not have the exact message. Is there a way to retrieve it?). I was under the impression that bzip2 can support pretty much any size of file. It's rather strange: I have backed up files of about 4.5Gb before without trouble.
At the same time, I have had this problem before, and it's definitely not a memory problem: I am backing up onto a 100G external hard drive.
That reminds me, in fact, (I hadn't thought of this) that one time I tried to move an archived backup of about 4.5Gb to an external (it may have been the same one) and it said that the file was too large. Could it be that there is a maximum size of file I can transfer to the external in one go? Before I forget, I have ubuntu Karmic and my bzip2 version is 1.0.5 (and tar 1.22, though maybe this is superfluous information?)

Then moved all the parts of the file to tiny linux on a really old laptop. no cd drive, no usb or network. so have to rely on floppy drive. i do know that reconstruction while extracting using commands is possible. but not working.tried tar -xMf file.tar.001 but nothing.

Oct 30, 2010I was trying to figure out how to generate compressed files in zip format and searched on here. The search produced a list of forum entries on the topic, but all of the instructions were on how to do it in terminal, how to download obscure programs and install them from terminal, then run them from terminal, with all these arcane sets of switches and parameters. Eesh.
It comes with Ubuntu, after all. In the case of zipping files, all you have to do is to go to the File Manager, find the file(s), select it or them, right-click on it or them, and select Compress and file type zip. It's so simple.
There have been a number of other tasks where I wind up spending hours figuring out how to implement the advice offered in these forums through Terminal. The folks who offer the advice often are so good at it that they leave out steps obvious to them, but that take a lot of work for somebody not as skilled at it to find out. After crawling through broken glass to get the job done, and normally screwing something up so it's not quite right once I get it going, I figure out how to do it through the GUI and find out it takes a fraction of the effort.

Apr 21, 2010I am attempting to be careful in case my system crashes, and although highly unlikely my first question is if there is a way to first compress my Linux Partitions. After running the diskutil command in OSX's Terminal, I basically end up with this poartition scheme:

I am sure there is a way in the Terminal to first compress disk0s3, disk0s4, and Linux Swap, and then output the compressed partitions into my external Harddrive. I have already read some of the suggestions that only /HOME, /etc/fstab/, list of installed packages, /opt, and /var/cache/apt/archives/-where all installed packages are stored, is what I should backup. But, please correct me if I'm wrong. Wouldn't it take quite a while to install all those packages again in case of a system failure. Or would it just be easier to untar all of them in their directories once Linux has been reinstalled. The closest command I have found so far in being able to achieve this is:

I can open the new (empty) archive file and then add files to be compressed. I have tried using several different formats (zip, tar.bz and others) with the same results. The "file roller" is shown as a plugin but has no configuration other than the compressed file type.
