I have recently installed 64 Studio. I want to do a lot of video editing and sounds like this is the distro for the job. I must admit that after installing it that the interface does look a bit dated nowadays and it is a bit sluggish compared with other Linux distros. Not sure if I will stick with it but, anyway I can't get the system to recognize my wireless card or it seems that way. I have selected and configured the wireless connection with the ESSID and password, etc but, the check box for the wireless connection does not remain checked. I can save the details and exit the program but, when I come back into it to check status the box is unchecked again which leads me to believe the wireless card is not being detected.
I am using DELL Studio 15, Windows Vista Home Premium. I have a dual boot of Linux (RHEL 5). My question is how to configure Internet access in my PC in LINUX OS. Windows mode :
how do i access Internet :
I insert a LAN cable to my laptop and access internet. or I insert the cable to my wifi router and access it wireless whenever I am bit far away. RHEL 5.0 Linux 1) UNABLE to access internet when I connect the lan cable to my laptop. 2) Is there any way i can access internet or should i use any drivers that are provided my dell pc. I am very new to linux and i am not sure to which and how to use it.
I am having trouble getting my wireless internet working on Ubuntu 9.10 on a Dell Studio 1535 laptop. My wireless card works just fine in an earlier version (8.10) of Ubuntu. In fact, it worked right out of the box on Intrepid. However, in 9.10, I can not get it to work. I have installed Wicd Network Manager in it, and it shows no networks visible, even though if I reboot and go into my 8.10 version (I have a multiboot), opening Wicd will immediately show several wireless networks within range. So I'm thinking that the 9.10 version is missing a driver for my wireless card, which 8.10 has.
I'm currently using Ubuntu Studio Lucid and would like to use Ubuntu Studio Maverick, but I'm unsure how to go about the upgrade. Should I upgrade to generic ubuntu maverick then upgrade to ubuntu studio? Or install ubuntu studio maverick from a DVD?? Or something else?? I should say that I have a separate /home partition.
[Edited because what I first wrote was confusing:] when I started the process of upgrading with Update Manager it said that quite a lot of things would be removed (it would be upgrading only to generic Ubuntu for one thing)---I aborted that by the way. I was wondering if anybody knew of a way to avoid having to first sort of note everything that I have installed, then do the upgrade to generic Ubuntu, then do an upgrade to Ubuntu Studio, then reinstall all of the apps in their newer versions. Might there be a way to upgrade the OS itself first and then just directly update the apps without having to reinstall them, figuring out what to install all over again too?
I'm having a bit of trouble setting up Multitouch for my current setup. I have gone through and tried setting it with synclient, but when I place both of my fingers on the touchpad, the pointer jumps/jitters around.
First issue is, now that I am running Debian "Squeeze", my laptop runs much hotter than before. Its definitely hot on the very bottom compared to when running Windows. Once the system begins to heat up, the fans start spinning faster, the system gets louder, etc.
Second issue is battery life. I am able to get 5 hours out of the laptop in Windows, but maybe 2.5 hours in Debian. I am assuming that these two problems go hand in hand. Now from experience with PC hardware, I know that the newer chips scale their frequency and voltage depending on demand. I don't think the computer is doing this correctly when running Linux.
By running cat /proc/acpi/processor/CPU0/throttling
I see that the CPU(s) are in T0 state (or 100%). Manually setting the frequency doesn't change anything either (via the gnome applet). Am I diagnosing this correctly?
I want to build Taucs library [URL] , to use its sparse solver in some number crunching apps, [URL] Since i plan to build these apps with the intel development suite, i better build Taucs with the same set of compilers... but AFAIK Taucs doesnt exist in <testing> or <unstable> ( I could apt-get source, and set appropriate flags for compilers it it did ) and i do not quite understand its build system ..It is not a ./configure system...it relies on external libs like blas, lapack and metis... which regardless of existing in Debian repo are built with gcc-4.5... so.. no way of using this to link with an Intel built library...
I just got a dell studio 1557 with core i7 processor. I have heard they run warm and suspect this one is no exception but am having a hard time monitoring the temps. When doing acpi -V i can see 2 thermal zones (0,1) with the first being 63C and the second always staying 26.8C. When I am doing a lot of processing the first thermal zone jumps up quickly. First, should that be the processor temp? Secondly, any way to get more accurate readings with lm-sensors(sensors-detect can find no monitoring items).
I have a pc with debian lenny, this machine doesn't have internet connection, when I need a new package I installed it with dpkg, updating phyton I got some broken dependences and some services doesn't work properly. I have another pc with debian lenny that is updated, my question is: what is the process to extract the packages downloaded in the pc-B, and create a mobile repository?
I navigated to usr/local/zend/zendstudio-7_1_2/uninstallzendstudio folder and there are some files, one of them is uninstallzendstudio i double clicked it, and chose RUN .. but it gives me error : you do not have sufficent privileges to perform uninstallation, fix the problem ..
Has anyone tried running ubuntu studio on a mac? (intel mactbook pro 5,3) I assume the installation would be essentially the same as installation for standard ubuntu release on mactel? Is there anything specific relating to audio drivers (video too) etc that I should know?
How can I configure the Ubuntu Studio's desktop exactly like Ubuntu? I installed Ubuntu Studio and theres no way to make an internet connection on standard panel neither any specific audio/graphics production software?
I have a studio 1537. I'm on lucid and since some days I've got two COMPLETE shutdown of my system. Is there a way to check logs to see what's happened?
I am currently running Ubuntu studio 10.10 and I love it, but I added some of the stock ubuntu repositories for software sources. now my upgrade manager is asking me to update to ubuntu 11.4. I am tempted to but I dont know how safe it is.
Is there anyway to install Aptana Studio in Ubuntu 11.04 other than eclipse plugin, like an actual install into the system. Currently all I can do is run it from a folder but that is starting to get very tiresome.
I have recently installed Fedora 12 on an external drive (by itself) on a Studio 15 laptop. The installation went flawlessly, but I am now having trouble getting a network connection (persumably due to lack of network card detection) to work. The ISO I used (via LiveUSB) is: Fedora-12-i686-Live.iso. My wireless card: Dell Wireless 1397 802.11g Half Mini-Card.
I have googled solutions to this, and came across this reference:[URL] to drivers for my network card. I download the file, and notice several C files in the '/src' directory of the .tar. Am I supposed to extract and compile these somewhere? Also, would I presumably be able to still get a hardwire connection with the default profile Fedora shows me without additional drivers? I am used to installing drivers already in .exe form, but would like how to handle these sorts of things in Linux.
well I switched from windows several years ago and never looked back. I wanted to use fedora (and I did for a while) but ended up using ubuntu studio (actually ubuntu with selected studio components) and to be fair it has worked out well. the thing is I am looking to keep my server skills up to date and I know at this time redhat is king and fedora has most of the stuff I need to keep current (files in same places, yum/rmp vs apt-get) for that elusive linux job I am looking for. but I need a real time kernel, jack, ardour, hydrogen and other assorted open source packages because, well because that is my interest. so...
1) Are these packages available in fedora via yum (I don't want to maintain tar packages)
2) Is there a real time kernel as well from yum?
3) kvm/qemu virtual machines did not work with the rt kernel on ubuntu 9.04 but DID in fact work on ubuntu 9.10. Has anyone used the rt kernel and run kvm/qemu on fedora? cause if I cant have a few vm's (opensolaris, centos and xp to be exact) I cannot come back.
ubuntu is nice but after a year I still keep starting to type yum install vs apt-get so I guess fedora never really left me... oh I should mention my computer is 64 bit...
have a Dell Studio 540 and am currently running Fedora 14 x64 KDE version. All seems to work well except I have no sound. Support.dell.com tells me my sound card needs a RealTek driver as well as ALC888 HD driver. Now I don't use the HD integrated sound (back), so I am assuming it's the Analog sound hardware (that I plug my headphones in on the front of the machine). Not sure if that is clear or not, or maybe will have no relation whatsoever how ever I have no sound. I have installed other distros and sound works, but I would really like to use Fedora.
I have not used Linux in some time (I used to use it back when suse 8 was still out and mandrake linux was still around).
Recently I decided to give it another go and downloaded both the LiveCD and the DVD (both 64-bit versions AND 32-bit versions).
I have a Dell Studio 1747 Laptop (with the 17.3 screen). It has an Intel i7 1.6GB processor, 4GB ram and an ATI Radeon 4650.
My problem is that the LiveCD just will not work. It gets to its boot menu, but when I press enter on the boot KDE live CD option, it will either try to boot and then freeze, or it will boot, you will hear that startup music, but the display will go blank. Could it be that it cannot handle my display or the graphics card on the laptop?
Unfortunately I have Windows 7, which doesn't seem to be supported by the windows installer on the DVD, so I can't test if it would work that way.
I must admit that ubuntu has given me the same grief, and so I wonder if maybe the laptop isn't yet supported properly by linux yet?
how I could use a live system or something, to at least try linux for a few things (I would need to retain windows for games and stuff). I'm not into resizing partitions and things, so I would prefer something else that could work.
I have just installed Ubuntu Studio on my old Acer Aspire 3003 and all is going well except that I can't get the wireless to switch on (it was working fine under XP). After searching the forums and with much help I have got the drivers installed for the Broadcom b43, but I still can't seem to get the wireless adapter to switch on. Many of the posts on this refer to System > Preferences > Network Connections, but I don't seem to have that option, just Network Tools and Network. Output of some commands that may help below.
Code:
sudo ifconfig -a [sudo] password for geoff: eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:16:36:0d:1e:d2 inet addr:192.168.1.66 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
I'm trying to use Webcam Studio as a way to feed videos to sites like ustream and ChatRoulette. I've set the source as a video, but when I hit 'Play,' the program crashes.
I did a clean install of Ubuntu Studio 10.04 (64bit) a few days ago. Everything has been running fine for a few days. Yesterday, while working in an html editor (Kompozer) and Firefox, the cursur stareted drifting to the top of the screen. It still responds to the mouse, but I am working against this pull and as soon as I stop moving the mouse, the cursor goes to the top again. It doesn't go left or right, just straight up. I had 8.01 on this before and never had nay issues like this. I have a Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse, but there is no trackpad on the keyboard.
I've tried shutting off the mouse power and rebooting with a regular wired mouse, and I get the same behavior. I don't have another keyboard right now, so I haven't tried disconnecting the wireless transceiver all together.
I recently bought Dell Studio 1747 with i7 processor. My fan keeps running fast and does not slow even when the load on processor is low or idle. In pre-installed Windows 7, fan works perfectly increasing and decreasing speed based on work load. The noise made by the fan is irritating.
