Jan 16, 2016I have problem to install my fonts in my Debian. I used this guide but it not worked for me, i just could right click on the font and install it with font viewer.
Ubuntu Linux searches for fonts in specific locations as listed in the /etc/fonts/fonts.conf file.
A look at the contents of /etc/fonts/fonts.conf file indicates the following directories which are searched by Ubuntu Linux for fonts. They are :
/usr/share/fonts
/usr/share/X11/fonts
/usr/local/share/fonts
~/.fonts
So if you want to install new fonts in Ubuntu Linux or Debian for that matter, you can copy the fonts to any one of the 4 directories listed above.
The last directory ~/.fonts is a local hidden directory in every user’s Home folder. If you install the new fonts in this directory, the fonts will be available only for the person logged into that particular user account.
If you want your new fonts to be available system wide, to all users, then you should install them in any one of the first three directories listed above.
Once all your fonts are copied to the specific font directories, you have to make Ubuntu Linux aware of the new fonts so that it can make use of them. This is done by running the following command in the console :
$ sudo fc-cache -f -v

Aug 12, 2010After removing a hard drive I (thought I)wasn't using, GRUB failed to load(turns out stage1 was on that drive) and it refused to install to a new drive(even after I kexec'd into the system - which was fun, considering the LiveCD used a different name for the hard drive). I finally threw in the towel and installed GRUB2, which worked after removing a second, incorrect root=. However, I can't find out how to switch the font from the fugly default to something that doesn't try to gauge my eyes out with a rusty spoon.

May 12, 2011I originally installed Debian and configured it the way I want it without any problems. It was working perfectly and I was happy. I then tried openSuse. I did not like it and re-installed Debian five hours later. Now I have a strange problem. This is the third re-install. With the first two, after installing a few fonts the system says the fonts are present, but they cannot be displayed. I only get empty rectangles. The fonts are not available in office and there is no text at all on the internet. Only photographs and a few icons. This forum for example, only has lines separating the posts.
I do not know why there is a problem, because I am configuring the system the same as the first time; install scim and add a few fonts. The founts are not in packages, but I need them for some of the work I do in office. Since Debian uses this strange permissions system where the user is not considered the owner of his or her computer, I use gksu nautilus. I makes no difference if I leave the permissions of the fount folder as root or change it to me. I am completely at a loss. As I mentioned, I am doing the same thing I did the first time, so there should not be any problems.
Debian Configuration :: 32 Bit Apps On Wine Cannot See System Fonts
Oct 23, 2015I've just installed Debian 8.2 KDE 64bit, installed wine, and found that a 32-bit Windows program (Agent newsreader) could not see the linux system fonts. (This worked fine on Kubuntu 14.04)
Since this is the first time that I've installed Debian, I'm not sure if I'm missing something obvious or if this is an actual bug.
Steps to reproduce:
Fresh install of Debian 8.2 KDE 64bit.
apt-get install wine
wine wordpad # this is a small word-processor for wine that is supplied with wine
menu -> format -> font
all linux fonts are visible -- so far so good
Because I want to use a 32bit program, I now have to do this, I understand:
dpkg --add-architecture i386
apt-get update
apt-get install wine-bin:i386
But after that,if I run "wine wordpad" and look at the fonts, all the linux system fonts are gone. The only fonts visible are the nine that are built into wine (Courier, Fixedsys, Marlett etc..) So installing the i386 wine support seems to have broken something.

By default, I build the image and headers packages with this line:

These kernel sources are usually the sources from debian, with a couple of more patches that I add. It appears that for nvidia-driver package versions higher than 352.79-1, the kernel headers/sources need to be prepared with 'make prepare' and 'make prepare scripts'. It's that simple. I concluded this after the nvidia dkms build failed on my custom kernel, but then succeeded after I pointed it to the full sources, but only after running 'make prepare' and 'make prepare scripts' on them. The problem is that this make-kpkg scheme doesn't appear to do this, or if it does, it doesn't properly include in the headers everything that it should.

The problem does NOT show with KDE default settings with display effects on but does show in fvwm, xfce etc, and in KDE without effects.
On a system with a Sandy Bridge integrated graphics (i5-2400) the problem went away by downgrading to xf86-video-intel-2.13.0. But it was not enough for another system with 945G which needed downgrading to xf86-video-intel-2.12.0.

Debian Configuration :: Wireless Won't Make Connection After Upgrade?
May 15, 2010I have a Dell Mini 9 with a Broadcom wireless adapter. I've had it working for months on Debian Sid, but recently I updated the entire OS to get KDE 4.4 (I also went from a 2.6.30 to a 2.6.32 kernel). Something in that upgrade caused wireless to cease to work properly. The problem is similar to the one described in this thread, but no resolution is mentioned there: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=50892 I've gone through all the steps to install the STA drivers/wl module for it, and it basically appears to be working. Using wicd, I can see all the wireless networks in the area.
The problem occurs when trying to connect. When I try to connect to my WPA wireless network, it eventually fails claiming a bad password. When I turned the wireless network into an unsecured network, it eventually fails claiming it's unable to get an IP. I've also tried at the command line with wpa_supplicant and it initially appears to work but in fact it hasn't. I've also got Kubuntu 10.04 installed on this machine, and it can connect without issue (using the proprietary driver that Ubuntu's hardware driver manager allows one to use).Does anyone know what has caused this? I even tried the earlier kernel, so that's not it.

Debian Configuration :: Torrent Traffic Very Slow / Make It Up?
Jul 10, 2011I am running on debian squeeze 6.0.2. I have been using it for the last id say 3 weeks and really am enjoying it.
I generally use transmission-gtk to share files over the internet. Normally I seed torrents at 110-160kb/s for hours at a time. However after messing around with firestarter my upload speed for seeding torrents rarely peaks over 70kb/s. I have purged firestarter with no success of my regular upload speed, and am very confused as to what happened. I also notice sometimes when it will get to about 70kb/s it will immediately drop down to the 20-30kb/s range.
For incoming bittorrent connections I use port 37294. I have set port 37294 to be allowed in my firewall, and forwarded in my router (since purging firestarter did not help I just reinstalled it).
I have also read allowing ports 6881-6889 is important, but I have never done that in my history of using torrents, and I have never experienced a decrease in UL speed like this.
Have I done something incorrect? I have never had this issue on other machines?

I mean these keys:
toggle wifikbd backlight +/−screen backlight +/−enable/disable screentoggle screensenable/disable touchpadvolume controls
I understand that some of them may work only with Xorg (e.g. toggle screens), but screen and kbd backlight and volume may work at tty too (because I can change this from tty when xorg is down). I know how to do it all from the console, but I want to bind keys with actions.
E.g. I can change kbd backlight with dbus and attach this action to key in my wm config, but it is not what I want. I want to make it global. I don’t understand which layer may provide the functionality for all users. Now only two keys works as I expect: toggle wifi and toggle touchpad. I haven’t set it up, it works out of the box.
