CentOS 5 Hardware :: Disk Write Performance Sustained (200 MBs)

Oct 27, 2010

I am experiencing disk write performance issues and I cannot find the cause. I have LSI-9211-8i SAS 2 controller (latest firmware), Centos 5.5 latest x86_64 kernel (2.6.18-194.17.4.el5 #1 SMP with latest LSI driver v. 7.00 datet Jul 27) and Seagate Cheetah ST3600057SS drives. These drives have a std write performance (sustained) of > 200MB/s (and read as well); with Fedora core 13 (same machine), issuing a dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdo bs=1024k count=16384 (16 GB direct device write), gets normally to 213 MB/s (repeated retries). On Centos 5.5 I am getting speeds around 110/113 MB/s.
iostat does not show anything specific (just 1.3 % wait, CPU 99.7 idle).
There are 14 drives: tried with several of them, same figures. Reads go around 200 MB/s.

General :: How To Access TrackPad Device In Eeepc

I am on an Eeepc running Ubuntu and I am trying to store the raw data from the Eeepc's inbuilt track pad in a file.To do this with the keyboard (as root) I wentcat /dev/input/event7 > ~/raw-keyboard-out.dataThe result was the whole bunch of random-looking data I was hoping for.Now I want to do this for my mouse, and I tried all of the 'files' in this folder in an analogous operation and none of them seem to stream the input into a file.Does anybody know what the name of the TrackPad/mouse device is called in the /dev folder for an Asus Eeepc 1001p?

Ubuntu Installation :: Files Owned By User 1000 - No Access

May 25, 2010

Running 9.10 now, I'd like to do a clean install of 10.04 on my dual-boot (with XP) Compaq notebook. As a test, I burned an ISO image onto a 1-GB stick and booted to 10.04 from it. It works just fine, except that the directories in the Documents folder on my hard drive are owned by "user 1000", and "he" grants me access to only about half of them.

Is this problem likely to persist if I actually install 10.04 rather than just running it from the stick? If so, what can I do about it? Second question: am I correct in understanding that if I still need to access my Ubuntu partition from XP, I'd better stick with ext3 for this install rather than going to ext4?

Ubuntu Networking :: Cannot Access Internet With Asus Eeepc 1015p

Nov 18, 2010

i've just installed ubuntu netbook remix 10.10 on my asus eeepc 1015p. whether i use an ethernet cable or wireless, i can establish a connection, but i can't access any websites through firefox or get software via the software manager.

i've attached some terminal screenshots from my attempts at troubleshooting, which i think contain all the relevant hardware info.

i've already searched the forums and see a lot of problems similar to mine, but none seem to involve the same combination of hardware / ubuntu version as me. since i have no experience, i'm hesitant to try to apply solutions that i don't understand and in which i'm not totally confident.

Ubuntu :: Sustained HDD Writes After Formatting?

Jun 7, 2011

I'm seeing sustained disk writes of about 2 MB/s in the indicator-multiload indicator in Unity. I determined that it is writes on my 500GB HDD on /dev/sdb. This behaviour started after I used Gparted to create a single 500GB ext4 partition and also selected that it should be formatted to ext4 in Gparted.

Is this usual? It also survived a reboot.. I assume that it is the full formatting taking place in the background?

I saw no activity using pidstat or iotop. Only using vmstat -d revealed the writes.

General :: Configure 1000 Base T Ethernet Card To Send At 1000 Base T?

I have a router that is 1000 Base T and two computers each with ethernet cards that support 1000 Base T. All are equipped with Cat 5e cable. Before I had a router that only went up to 100 Base T and I would setup one box with linux running proftpd. On the other box,I would use win xp pro and use firefox to ftp into the other box and download a file. Download speeds went up to 11.2 MB/sec. Now when I switched routers, I expected something like 120 MB/sec but I'm only getting 5.3 MB/sec. What do I need to change?

CentOS 5 :: Random Kernel Panics / Correct It?

Jul 8, 2009

I'm running CentOS 5.3 x86_64 on my laptop (dell vostro 1400, core2duo, 3GB RAM, intel 3945ABG wireless, nvidia video and LAN). The problem is that some times (like 15-20% of times) I shutdown the laptop, I get a kernel panic related always to the wireless kernel module (I haven't been able to get screenshot or anything). I'm using the latest centosplus kernel. I never get these panics with the standard CentOS kernel, however the standard kernel doesn't light the wireless led, and that annoys me a lot. Therefore I'm forced to use centosplus kernel. The question is not how to solve this (i know I've not given enough details) but what to do to diagnose better the cause of the panic and then correct it.

CentOS 5 :: Getting Error Message And Random Hangs / Fix This?

Oct 2, 2009

I recently installed CentOS 5.3 on a Dell PowerEdge 1800 server that used to have Microsoft Windows SBS 2003 on it. Everything seemed to be going fine until a few days ago. Here's the sum of it all...

- System seems to randomly hang, at which it becomes unavailable on the network (can't be pinged, monitor won't come back on, and you can't wake it up... have to reboot, the scroll lock and caps lock keys flash at the same time)
- Received this error message...

Uhhuh. NMI received for unknown reason a0.
You probably have a hardware problem with your RAM chips.
Dazed and confused, but trying to continue.

...it doesn't crash at this point though. I ran memtest86 twice and did not experience any problems. I updated the BIOS to the newest version, which contained a few bug fixes, but still experienced the same problems

CentOS 5 Server :: Postfix Random Delivery ?

Apr 13, 2011

I configured a Postfix Server to relay the messages to an Exchange Server. To keep it simple I configured all my users locally and I setup local .forward files in their home folders, specifying their local Exchange address.

Everything seemed to work fine (for years now), until I upgraded postfix in October, 23rd 2010.

Alas, lately I noticed that, since then, even if I just realized it now, sometimes the server seems not to use the .forward file and tries to use the local delivery using cyrus, which does not find a local mail folder (obviously, since I never created them as I didnt want to) and replies to the sender with a "550-Mailbox unknown" error. Today I enabled the "-v" mode for "local" in master.cf the debugging the problem a bit better, to see what's the problem.

If I was sure about the problem being the postfix version (2.3.3, which is way too old now!), I'd give it a try and substitute it with the latest 2.8.2 (even if the server is a production server and is almost untouchable).

Following the error and my main.cf and master.cf setup files:

CentOS 5 Networking :: Reboots Causes Unpredictable Enumeration Of Ethernet Drivers Causes Eth0 To Be Random?

Mar 20, 2009

I have several systems experiencing this issue, but the "worst case" system at the moment is a system where there are 2 dual-port PCI-X e1000 cards, and two on-board e1000e PCI-express card. What happens is maddening. If the /etc/sysconfig/hwconf is removed, and kudzu is not run, and the 6 interfaces each have a corresponding script:

/etc/sysconfig/network-script/ifcfg-eth0
/etc/sysconfig/network-script/ifcfg-eth1
/etc/sysconfig/network-script/ifcfg-eth2[code]...

Now what happens defies explanation. The only way I can be sure to make the e1000e first-listed-in-pci-order e1000e device always eth0 is to remake the initrd and add e1000e to the initrd. If I do not do that, eth0 might be the onboard night, it can also be the first port on either of the dual port cards. So eth0, eth2 and eth4 all take turns being eth0. This was not an issue in the EL-5.1 timeframe. This is certainly new to the EL-5.2 timeframe and thus far is not possible to control because the system does not load eth0's driver alias in order, and the enumeration of the PCI devices causes what seems to be random labeling of the first interface.

This is a particular problem in that identical hardware systems will come up with different eth0 interfaces , and on a single system, without the /etc/sysconfig/hwconf (which calls "eth0" something different from what was originally in the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 HWADDR directive).I need as little auto-magic as possible, I can live with PCI-bus order and driver load order is the order ethernet devices appear in, I cannot use the software in a state where what is "eth0" is randomly determined and the only way I can nail it down is to run kudzu, generate a hwconf AND brand the network interfaces in the network-scripts with HWADDR. I've been using EL since 6.2 and this is the first time I've ever encountered a situation where the enumeration rules (which are ancient at this point) over-ridden by something.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): EL-5.2 series. The random enumeration of PCI devices and the subsequent assigning of eth0 to a random NIC is not on every reboot, and does not seem tied to a power off scenario vs a simple reset or warm reboot. Over the course of 0 reboots , eth0 should have moved between 2-3 times.Packages that seem relevant.

CentOS 5 Server :: Cannot Access VMware Via Infrastructure Web Access

May 9, 2011

I've recently installed CentOS 5, because I needed a good OS to run VMware Server. Just a heads up, I'm not very familiar with RH/CentOS distros, I usually use Arch Linux. My VMware install went fine, config is standard settings. Now I'm trying to access the VMware Infrastructure Web Access using port 8222 (http) and 8333 (https), but it's a no go. I'm connecting from another machine on the LAN, as the CentOS box is headless. I restarted the vmware services, and they seem to be launching fine. I don't know much about VMware though. I verified with netstat and ports 8222 and 8333 are listening.

Compared to Windows Visya and other Linux distros ( Fedora 11, Suse 11.1, Mandriva 2009.1 ) access to the internet is much slower. It seems there is a noticeable delay when running CentOS 5.3. before internet access kicks in each time I am surfing the web or updating my system.

Is there any way I can speed things up, or determine why CentOS 5.3 seems much slower ?

Fedora :: F12 On Asus EEE 1000 SSD Netbook?

Nov 28, 2009

Fedora 12 is nearly turnkey on my Asus EEE 1000 SSD netbook. I just needed a few tweaks to get the wireless and touchpad seutp. All of this info is scattered in various places including right here on the FedoraForum, but I thought if it would help just one more person to have it all in one place, then so be it.

1) I used the Fedora 12 i686 Live iso.

2) I installed it on a 1GB thumbdrive using my desktop Fedora 11 system:

sudo livecd-iso-to-disk Fedora-12-i686-Live.iso /dev/sdg1

3) While booting the EEE, hit the Esc key and select the USB device of the thumbdrive. Make sure a wired ethernet is plugged in. We will restore the wireless later.

4) Pick the defaults, except when it comes to the disk partitioning. I have the pair of SSD drives, one 8GB and the other 32GB. I reduced the swap volume size to 2GB to match the memory in the device rather than using the 4GB default (2x memory) and increased the / volume size to the max. I planned on turning off swapping and only intended to use the swap space for the sleep/hibernate functionality. Otherwise, I let the installation setup the layout. a /boot with 200MB of space, 2gb swap volume, and the rest under LVM covering both SSDs.

5) Finish the installation. Reboot and create your user.

6) Apply any patches that are available using SoftwareUpdate. Reboot if necessary.

7) Now time for setting up the wireless. We need the rt2860 driver. This is available in the rpmfusion.org repro. First we need to set it up. Bring up FF and use this url:
