I have CentOS 5.5 and try to create KVM virtual machine with CentOS 5.5 as a guest. But when I exec command:

I have tried to install debian 5.0 and 4.0 without any luck. I have both tried virt-manager and virt-install with both debian-501-i386-netinst.iso, and full dvd. I't always gives me the same error:Starting install.Could not find an installable distribution at '/xen/debian-501-i386-netinst.iso'

I had set up 4 virtual machines on centos 5.5 system where I directed the image locations to an external storage. I have lost the image files in the storage, but I have the image files that were copied from the virtual machine image location. I want to put up the same system on the same computer by copying these backup images. However, when I copy the image file to the same exact location and start the corresponding virtual machine I get "no bootable disk" error. When I increase the size of the image using "qemu-img" commands, I can get rid of this error, but get "error reading disk" error. Is there a way to overcome these problems, or is it not possible to restore a virtual machine by copying the machine image file under ..../xen/images?

My hardware fully supports virtualization, and I'm running qemu as the hypervisor with Virtual Machine Manager as the GUI to manage and create VMs. Host hardware is a Dell PowerEdge T710, with a quad core Xenon processor and four 1TB disks in a raid 6 array.
Within the Virtual Machine Manager when trying to create a new VM, there is the option to not "allocate entire virtual disk now". What format is created when you "allocate entire virtual disk now" and when you don't?
I want to create a qcow2 image format, but it doesn't look like it is supported. Does anybody know how to create a VM with a qcow2 image format?
When you create a blank disk with "qemu-img create -f qcow2 disk.qcow2 3700G", it indeed does create a qcow2 image. However, Virtual Machine Manager is unable to read these images, claiming that it is 15 megs or so in size (which is what it actually occupies in host disk space until you try and put a VM into it).
I have a query regarding top & virtual memory. When we run top it show VIRT (Virtual Mem), RES (Resident Mem) & SHR (Shared Memory). The total virtual memory of my machine is 4 GBs (2 GB RAM + 2 GB Swap), but still I am able to see a process showing 4000m virtual memory column. what it means, as its show VIRT Mem more than actual available VIRT memory

I did try to install the Xen Slackbuild some time ago but failed. I'm afraid I can't remember why now. As far as I remember the Slackbuild was just out a day or so, so perhaps there were unresolved issues in the early days. How is Xen now? Does it run as well as KVM, for HVM as well as PV guests? Does virt-manager allow you to create Xen VMs or just KVM VMs? I'm very happy with KVM on Slackware (and Xen on NetBSD) but as I say, the Xen 4 release has some enticing features which pretty much do away with dual- and multi-booting. View 8 Replies View RelatedI have been unable to create any type of Windows VM in Xen. Every time it tells me that the processor(s) in the machine do not support full virtualization. After some research, I found several articles regarding the vmx setting in /proc/cpuinfo not showing up when the xen kernel is booted versus it showing up in the default kernel. Of course, I am not seeing the vmx extension in /proc/cpuinfo after I boot to the xen kernel. In the other posts where other people are in the same situation, the only resolution is to upgrade to the 2.6.16 xen kernel. I am already past that:

yet I am still unable to create any form of Windows VM. I have even seen that some people are able to create a partially virtualized Windows VM, and they report that the message is only a warning. However, I am unable to get past this message. I am running a Dell Optiplex 760 with an Intel Core 2 Duo E7300, and I have the VT-x setting enabled in the BIOS. Has anyone else seen this situation or have any thoughts on why this is happening?

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy company's default OS is Windows 7. I convinced my manager so that I could use Fedora 12, since I am mostly familiar with development environment in Fedora. However there are a few things I need in Windows 7, and I want to stop going back and forth in two OS'es in dual boot-up setting.
I've searched online for easy way to use the existing Windows 7 as guest virtual machine. I first tried VMware's Vcenter Converter Standalone in Windows 7, but it failed with some error code, and searching the particular error code didn't turn up any solution. I also tried to use Sun's VirtualBox, but I get segmentation fault error in Fedora. I tried to see if VMware server has a tool, but installation exists with an error, and searching the web for the error code didn't turn up anything either.... I wonder if I am having this much difficulties because I am using x86_64 version of OS'es.
Anyhow, if anyone has done it successfully - using existing Windows 7 as guest virtual machine in x86_64 version of Fedora 12.
I had just put the last touch on a snort, mysql, apache, barnyard, base isntall to CentOs 5.3. I noticed that ifconfig displayed an odd virtual nic, and I wanted as little running on this machine as possible. I don't remember specifying that I wanted XEN installed. And on the old lowend machine that is powering this server, Virtualization was the last thing I wanted running on it. I did a google, discovered that the way to remove XEN completely (yum uninstall xen' only removed 'xen' but still, oddly, xen was running after a reboot. Talk about perplexing.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just install QEMU and virtual machine manager to use virtualization, but virt-manager cannot run properly. I can create a VM, then mount CDROM ISO, startup. With Windows installation, it runs well until format partition step, after that it is disconected and exit with error related to VNC. I dont know why have this problem cause the packages that I installed is from Fedora repo and I think they have been tested.

I'm working on a script. fter it has installed and removed packages, I need to configure a ton of settings. In GNOME, I understand that those settings are kept in "/home/user/.gconf". Can I create a virtual machine and configure the system through the GUI to my liking and then dump all of the settings, so that I can load them on another machine? Is it as simple as copying the directories?

As per documentation, only NETWORK install is supported if the guest is to be installed as paravirtalized.I copied the CentOS DVD in /home directory with folder name centos52 and exported it through NFS.
