CentOS 5 Server :: CentOS 5.5 Guest In VirtualBox / Less Memory Available Than Configured
Aug 27, 2010
I just ran into a weird problem with a CentOS 5.5 64-bit server running VirtualBox 3.2.8 (I would run Vmware Server 2.0.2 if not for the well known fact that Vmware doesn't care about its Server line anymore and it doesn't run on CentOS > 5.3 without major splits). I currently have two guests in that VirtualBox setup, a CentOS 5.5 64-bit and a Fedora 13 64-bit. The CentOS 5.5 guest shows less memory available than configured. If, for example, I give the virtual machine 512MB of memory the guest OS only recognizes 380MB. If I give it 768MB it only recognizes 637MB, and so on. I don't have that problem on the Fedora guest - 1024MB configured, 1024MB available.

I use CentOS under VirtualBox. There are Guest Additions, but for Ubuntu are
virtualbox-ose-guest-utils and virtualbox-ose-guest-x11
There are GA replacements, better than GA (no problem with AppArmor). Are CentOS replacements ?

Problems with xen 3.1.2 creating and installing domU CentOS 5.5 I am trying to do a virt-install --prompt --paravirt, and the install error out while trying to download install RPMs. I have googled for xen centos virt-install and various permutations. I have found similar howtos for 5.4 and 5.3, but they resulted in the same outcome. I did find several posts with similar issues, but no solution was posted.[URL]..

Physical machine has got one intel xeon cpu 2.4ghz quad core, 8 gb of ram and 3 hdd 500gb raid5. I already set this option: Fit all virtual machine memory into reserved host RAM. How can I increase performance? Are there any kernel build for virtual installation?

I'm experiencing some rather severe problems after updating my Centos 5.4 system (Virtual Xen guest). What happens is that when the system boots it complains about missing .so files which prevents about 50% of the services installed from running.
I'm suspecting that it has something to do with selinux for two reasons: 1. The first services to go down complains about the security context of some files, and 2. selinux was kinda the reason I decided to update in the first place as it was disabled when it shouldn't be (enabled in system-config-securitylevel, disabled when running sestatus).
The whole boot-sequence ends with alot of "INIT: Id 'X' respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes"-messages (including all runlevels) before it goes stale, and I can do nothing.
The server in question had undergone very little tinkering from my part, pretty much none at all, the only services installed after installation was apache, mysql and webmin.
Details:
CentOS 5.4 is installed on both the host and guest.
The guest runs on an lvm-partition.
I have two other vm's(also CentOS) running just fine, altough I'm a bit weary of updating them .
Attached are some screenshots of the boot-process.
I hope some one here can share some insight on this problem. It's making me pretty nervous seeing that our whole network is run by CentOS-installations (not that I'm certain that CentOS is the culprit).

I am new to virtual machines in general, and currently playing with the XEN-based VM in CentOS 5.5. Question: if neither virt-manager nor virsh (using "virsh edit <guest name>" and changing the name in the XML file) are designed to actually change a guest's name...then what is the recommended procedure for doing this?

I have xen kernel on a 5.4_64 though it seems to have always done this regardless of version. When I add a virt the control set shows the total machine memory minus what I just allocated to the new virt. This also shows up in the system monitor as total available ram. Problem arises in deleting and making new virts. The memory never reappears as usable after deleting virts. So now after testing several different setups I'm down to 1.4 gigs showing available on the dom0. What can I do to recover this lost memory? I've searched, read, looked every where I could think of and there just doesn't seem to be any information about deleting virts only adding them.

I have a web server with the specs below and my apache server is being a hog using all my RAM 7gigs or 8gigs of ram. When there is a rush of traffic at once my whole server crashes and I have to reboot apache. The way my site is set up I have a tube script and I use the tube script to host videos on my forum I have 1000 videos on the tube script. I brought a bigger server and more ram because of the down time I been having . I am really trying to figure out why its crashing and using so much ram. I installed eAccelerator didn't seem to help with the apache server.

I have installed a recent version of CentOS 5 (kernel is 2.6.18-128.el5) as VM in VirtualBox on a Windows 2008 server. When CentOS is totally idle, the CPU on the host (windows) machine is totally pegged from the VirtualBox process. I have read on some other forums that this is a problem with the clock running at 1000Hz and that recompiling the kernel configured with the clock at 100Hz will fix, or at least minimize the problem.
Has anyone else seen this problem? Can someone point me to a good set of instructions on rebuilding the kernel? I followed one set of instructions, but it wasn't for CentOS. After I building everything I was supposed to and copying files over the System.map* and vmlinuz* in the /boot directory (I think I screwed up that one), I went to modify the lilo.conf per the instructions, but I couldn't find it.

We had servers that worked fine for years. After updated them to the latest version of CentOS (5.2 with latest updates), they keeps on hanging when being scanned by PCI Verdors (a Credit Card security standard). Basically, the scan causes httpd process to eat up all memory, and the server becomes unresponsive. Normal operations resume after the scan stops for 5, 10 minutes. Output from top looks like the following:
Mem: 1018988k total, 1007168k used, 11820k free, 432k buffers

I'm looking for a way to put a MySQL database in a server's memory. The disks aren't fast enough to keep up with the usage and I don't feel like going for a splitted web&db server yet because of the costs.
Because this involves risks (unless there's a way to read from the memory and write to the memory AND disks?), so I'd prefer that the DB gets copied automatically every hour or so to the local disks.

OpenSUSE installed in a Virtualbox Virtual Machine and I want to set a shared folder.
1 - Set up a Virtual Machine and install OpenSUSE 11.2
2 - Create a shared folder on host (HostFolder)
3 - Setup the shared folder in Virtualbox Via the Virtual Machine details or via Devices > Shared Folders...
4 - Install dependencies for running the Virtualbox installer You need to install the right development kernelpackage for your machinetype (use 'zypper search -i kernel' to see what's installed) sudo zypper make gcc kernel-source kernel-hosttype/default-devel
5 - Run the Virtual Machine and go to Devices > Guest Additions This mounts an iso image in your OpenSUSE guest.
6 - Open a root terminal and run
cd /usr/src/linux
make oldconfig && make prepare && make scripts && make dep
cp ../linux-obj/$HOSTTYPE/default/Module.symvers .
make prepare
* A commenter on previously mentioned thread says this step is unnecessary but it doesn't work without on my system. I suggest trying step 7 first and returning to step 6 if that fails. *
7 - Run ./VirtualboxLinux yourhosttype .run from the mounted iso image.
8 - Create shared folder in OpenSUSE (GuestFolder)
9 - Test with sudo mount -t vboxsf HostFolder /home/user/GuestFolder It works? Great! Let's set up the system so it automounts for your regular useraccount instead of root-only access.
10 - Add this line to /etc/fstab HostFolder /home/user/GuestFolder vboxsf defaults,uid=1000,gid=1000 0 0
11 - It works for me but if it still doesn't automount after a reboot; sudo mount -a

I used to be able to access the web server I had running on my guest OS in Virtual Box from my host OS. I also had it set to the network settings of "Host Only Adapter". Then I needed to access the internet directly on the gues OS, so I changed my settings on the guest OS to "NAT" (in virtual box), and in /etc/network/interfaces, I removed the loopback stuff and the static IP I'd put in. Now no matter what I do, I cannot get it back to being accessible from the host os! I even did a completely NEW install of Ubuntu guest OS in Virtual box Guest OS: Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop Host OS: OpenSUSE 11.3 VirtualBox: 3.2.6

I just opened an (unmanaged) VPS account and and have been encountering nothing but problems with trying to get Apache up and running (its something I've done many times before).Basically the inital error was with LDAP not having enough space, so I disabled the related extensions and Apache still would not run. Looking at the log, it contains: (28)No space left on device: Unable to create scoreboard (anonymous shared memory failure)

I am trying to set up samba in my CentOS virtual machine that is running on a Windows 7 host. I have found a tutorial in the How-Tos on this site but I'm not sure if they are exact and I'm paranoid about messing something up. The link to the tutorial is below. Is there anything that I should do different or anything that I should be aware of? Also, once this is set up, how do I transfer files between the two machines?

I had a lot of trouble installing Guest Additions within the Fedora 13 Guest on a Linux host. I had to mount the vboxGuestadditions.iso from the Device --> CD/DVD Devices menu. Then I located the appropriate package for my system. In my case it was the AMD64 Linux version.I ran this as administrator in Terminal. I used the "bash" command followed by the package name. This was after CDing the the appropriate directory. The packaged installed, I then rebooted and it worked fine. (Something that would make this easier is to load a script into nautilus that would allow me to open a locatation as administartor at the open window. I'm sure there is something in Fedora to do this but I couldn't find it in a hurry so I used the command line way).

I have the following function on my xmlrpc server side.
The registration of this function is done as follows from the main function:
The above function makes the server segfault some where on the return path and client gets the response:
Here is what GDB shows when server segfaults....
However if I remove the line "xmlrpc_strfree (node_name);" then server does not segfault and client receives the response correctly. In the xmlrpc-c code it clearly says " Return the string in newly malloc'ed storage that Caller must free." in xmlrpc_data.c::xmlrpc_read_string() which is the function that gets called from xmlrpc_parse_value().

I came to a "weird" situation when I saw in yum log files that several centOS systems have been automatically updated via yum. I checked the following:
1. chkconfig for init services that could upgrade the system: only yum-updatesd
2. In the config file of yum-updatesd.conf the do_update function is set to no.
3. If an updated made manually by a user ..no.
Where else should I look or how this update happened?
