I tried yum clean all and yum clean metadata, but I am still getting this error.

And I noticed that every time you reboot the server the file resolv.conf is erased

Nov 14, 2010I am going through creating a document on how to install Zoneminder on CentOS.So I decided I would do a new build and capture the output, dump it to a file, then post it.However, seems like sometime over the past 10 days or so when I did it last, one of the repos I use to download other software is now gone.I use this as an additional repository:Except, now it is not there anymore. Feb 3, 2010I don't know if this would be usefull to others but since we are using kickstart and then running post install scripts I needed a way to add rpmforge and set the yum-priorities for it correctly via script and here is what I cam up with. If you want to use go ahead (make sure you comment/uncomment the correct repo for your architecture). also not the ex commands are whitespace sensitive. If anyone sees a way to improve this let me know.

Aug 12, 2011I ran this command on a new centos 5.6 64 bit install today: rpm -Uhv http://apt.sw.be/redhat/el5/en/x86_64/rpmforge/RPMS//rpmforge-release-0.3.6-1.el5.rf.x86_64.rpm Sadly I failed to read a warning about setting priorities as a prerequisite to avoid rpmforge overwriting base Centos packages.
The install is a standard Cpanel web/email server and seems ok at the moment. My concern is I intend to clone this VS about ten times. Should I be concerned and if so, is there any way I can safely undo the rpmforge install? Eg can I use "rpm -e rpmforge-release-0.5.2-2.el5.rf" without vile consequences?

May 21, 2011Ubuntu 9.10 was set up to handle the booting selection - previously I thought it was xp but Ubuntu 9.10 "did" it. The system started out as a xp / ubuntu 9.10 dual boot on a 400gb drive. xp has 210gb, ub has 80 and their is a 100gb shared storage. Xp was installed first and then I followed a guide over at linuxconfig.org to get ub installed so that I could select which OS was wanted at boot. Ubuntu manages the boot up menu (Went back to look at my notes from the original setup) The owner tried to update to ub 11.04 and afterall was said and done the machine now boots to the message
error file not found grub rescue I can't say if 11.04 was properly installed or not. Ask whatever you like and I'll give the best answer I can. I think the xp install is okay but I can't say for certain as I don't know how to boot it outside the bootmanager at startup. Data has been saved so if I have to blow it all away and start over I can but I'm hoping I won't have to.

Software :: VLC Yum Installed From Rpmforge Doesn't Work?
Feb 19, 2009I have a RHEL Desktop and I added the rpmforge repo and yum installed VLC - the install itself run through without any problems, but when I try to start VLC, nothing happens. When I run a music or movie file and say open with VLC - nothing happens. I installed mplayer but it seems to have problems with playing streams and I'd prefer vlc anyway...I tried now several fresh installations using CentOS 5.2, RHEL Server 5.3 and RHEL Desktop 5.3 - same result .. VLC installs without being able to actually start it.

CentOS 5 :: Broken Kernel / How To Recompile?
Dec 15, 2009I tried to run some virtual machine using Virtual Machine Manager but the guest OS (windows server 2003) was not able to "see" the rest of my network. I believe VMM did some NAT-ing (192.168.122.x subnet) so i'm not able to "see" my network. I tried various network setting in VMM but couldnt get it to pull my network IP (192.168.1.x subnet).So i installed VirtualBox as a work around because i know VB work when i tried it on my windows machine. I ran into some issue getting VB to run, i think it was that i need to compile the kernel to "optimize" it for VB. I am fairly new to linux so that the impression that i get when i research for the fix to get VB working. In some of the forum post people suggest few things and it seem to me like it to compile the kernel. After a few hours of working i finally got it to compile but the computer crashed during compilation.
I am guess what happened is that i was trying to optimize the kernel for VB but the version of kernel i was using (2.6.18-164.6.1.el5xen) is already optimized for xen (VMM) so it crashed. I am looking to restore or recompile the 2.6.18-164.6.1.el5xen kernel. I am not sure if this is the right thing to do to fix it. With my limited knowledge of linux that all i can think of.
CentOS 5 Networking :: GDM Or PAM Broken After Upgrade 5.4 To 5.5?
May 20, 2010I have a number of CentOS 5.4 machines that use kerberos to authenticate. This works fine. However, after upgrading one of them to CentOS 5.5 it is no longer possible to log in.
In 5.4, I get this in the log:

Note the absence of the line where libkrb5 asks for a password. Running "kinit hans" on the machine (as root, who can log in) works as it should, so I don't think anything is wrong with kerberos as such (as I did yesterday, in [URL]. Clients still running 5.4 have no problems, so the problem was introduced in 5.5.
General :: Broken Software Update On Centos 5.5?
Apr 20, 2011I modified the file /etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-Base.repo and when I tried to do a yum install on some packages, i ran into "error performing checksum" on all mirror sites. Then I fell upon a comment on this site that gave a suggestion to type this: "yum -y remove yum-fastestmirror" to correct it. not a good command to use apparently since it removed yum and yum-fastestmirror. I re-installed them both but since then there doesn't seem to be automatic software update notifications nor any actions to do so in "system tools" under applications. I can still probably do a yum update but it'd be nice to have the system notifications.

Apr 9, 2009After upgrading to CentOS 5.3 my sendmail will no longer deliver messages using a program in my /etc/smrsh. It fails with the message "unknown mailer error 1". This program was working perfectly before I did the upgrade using yum. Here is the list of packages that were upgraded. Does anything jump out as being the source of the issue? I don't believe that sendmail itself was upgraded:

CentOS 5 :: Session Management Appears To Be Broken In 5.3 And 5.2
Jun 8, 2009Session management with gnome-session-properties and GDM appears to be broken in CentOS 5.3 and 5.2. I can't comment on earlier versions.Activating "Automatically save changes to session" does work--for example, on the next login, the terminals that were open at the last logout are reopened.
But if "Automatically save changes to session" is not selected, according to help,"when you end your session the Logout Confirmation dialog displays a Save current setup option."This does not happen. No "Save current setup" is offered, regardless of whether or not "Ask on logout" is selected.
Also according to help, if one has added sessions with gnome-session-properties, then
when one logs in "on GDM, you choose a session. When you choose a session, you can
select which of the multiple sessions to use."This does not happen. No matter how many sessions one may have added with gnome-session-properties, none of them appears in the list of sessions that GDM presents.
So it appears that only a small fraction of session management functionality works in
CentOS 5.3 and 5.2.
CentOS 5 :: C5 Media Repo Is Broken / Recover That?

My repo file is included at the bottom. Checking the path http://mirror.centos.org/centos-5/5.5/ there is no media dir which would explain the 404 error I get when I try to enable the repository. The question is where does it live or is this repo defunct? code...
CentOS 5 :: Part Of VLC 0.9.9 Broken With The Latest RPMs From Dag
Mar 31, 2011Aside from a few minor issues, I've been happy with VLC 0.9.9.
I recently did a yum update to get to Centos 5.5. I've got yum pointed to Dag.
Everything worked fine, until I restarted VLC 0.9.9.
In the update it looks like ffmpeg was updated to the 6.X branch, x264, and how vlc 0.9.9 was recompiled.
wait wait wait.. let me clarify, vlc 0.9.9 still works, but a key function in it that i use has broken.
I am able to do a yum downgrade on x264 and ffmpeg, but I am unable to downgrade VLC because it tells me there is no down grade path. How do I go about requesting the previous version of VLC be added back to Dags RMP site?
I spent sometime hacking on things the last 2 days, and was able to compile using the same ./configure options that were compiled from Dag with ffmpeg 5.2, and x264 and I get them to compile cleanly. VLC 0.9.9 source compiles and the errors I'm hitting go away.
I don't think the ffmpeg 6.X rmp is broken, i just think its to new for vlc 0.9.9 and breaks certain functionality.

May 18, 2010I had a working client installation with CentOS 5.4, using kerberos and PAM to authenticate. After an upgrade to 5.5, logins for users are no longer possible. Instead I get this:

CentOS 5 :: Gnome-volume-control Broken After Yum Update?
May 19, 2010My challenge today is a broken sound mixer in gnome. Yesterday I run 'yum update' and it installed about 200 updates. This morning I rebooted, when double-clicking the 'speaker' icon in the top right corner of my gnome and I got a "crash".
(I have to go to mixer and enable 'front speakers' before I get any sound - thats something else i'd like to fix one day) Here is what bug-buddy has to say:

On step 3, compiling ... module.I get No rule to make target `build' Stop.When I go to the /lib/modules/2.6.18.194.3.1.el5 directory, the Build file link is broken.If i go to the link source /usr/src/kernels/2.6 ...x86_64 does not exist. The /kernels folder is empty.I think I need to reinstall the identified kernel in that directory and reestablish a link to it. but am not savy enough to do that on my own.
CentOS 5 Networking :: Eth0 Now Broken After Last Kernel Update
Nov 23, 2010I am currently working to get to a stable dual boot Win7/CentOS 5.5 configuration on a Dell Latitude E6510 with the Intel 82577LM chipset. I haven't gotten the Centrino N WiFI chipset working yet, but the Eth0 device was working just fine.However, yesterday I did a system update. I did not pay close attention, but I believe the update did mention networking, because I thought it might help me get my wireless going. Now, Eth0 fails with the message, "Determining IP information for eth0... failed; no link present. Check cable?" It does this at boot up and if we try reactivating it once the system is up. We have tried unstalling and re-installing the driver.The Window 7 boot sees the adapter and runs just fine. I was at a different site location yesterday when everything was working, but my co-workers and I can't help but think it might be related to the update yesterday, since everything worked prior to the update and Windoze 7 works fine with the adapter.
I have not been able to mount my NTFS harddrive on the CentOS side, despite installing fuse, and I don't have wireless, which makes it difficult to get access to new drivers. I also have a FAT32 partition that would be great to share between the boots for passing info, but I haven't found a way to mount a FAT32 partition in CentOS.

Aug 18, 2010I tried to install OpenSuse 11.3 on my brand new pc, which already had Windows 7 proffessional in it, and I went step by step through the installation without changing anything. It didn't work. I tried for a second time and this error message kept popping up: "Creating device modes with udev 2.0436224] [drm: i915_diver_load]*ERROR*Detected broken BIOS with 262140/2644kb of video memory stolen. 2.0436224] [drm: i915_diver_load]*ERROR*Disabling GEM(try reducing stolen memory or updating the BIOS to fix)"
And then a lot of letters and numbers wich make no sense to me. Now the only way I can initiate OpenSuse is with the OSuse boot dvd and on failsafe mode.
