I wish to install httpd and mysql server softwares via YUM and i added rpmforge rpm, which installed the following content in my /etc/yum.repos.d/rpmforge.repo.....But, when i did a yum clean all and yum install httpd, it is not working.What should I do to get the RHEL5 packages from mirror sites such as rpmforge or epel5 without registering with RHN?

I want to install RHEl5 from guest OS in Vmware:
1.I inserted cd-rom and change bios setting to cd rom
2."linux askmethod" , then select http protocol.
3. but system never retrive files from installtion dir instead retrive from cd rom used for only booting purpose.

I still need to install and configure tomcat running as a worker behind httpd and configure everything. But my question is about security. What do I need to do to ensure that when I start httpd and mysql that they are secure? Are there default settings that I need to change? Are there security patches I need to apply?

Alright, so I installed the c5-testing versions of httpd, php, and mysql, since my server is used for other daemons primarily and these aren't used as production servers I decided to test the bleeding edge versions of these, report any bugs I find, etc. The problem is, since I updated httpd and mysqld they no longer start up at boot. I tried using chkconfig --add with both of them, but both their init.d scripts have - for levels, so I did not assign any levels. They still do not start up at boot. [URL]

I know it is possible to do it manually, but then you would need to know all the package names, and I don't.
I want to install all the packages from BackTrack into my Ubuntu installation. I really don't like the idea of having it in a VM and having a separate partition for it is even more out of the question. I know that the folks at BackTrack doesn't like it when people leech their repositories, but that's what you get for releasing open source software. Stupid? maybe.. A valid reason? probably not.. Do I still want it? Yes.
Another edit: I have now given up on this as it seems impossible to get it to work even by manually installing packages.
accidentally I do something wrong with my server and the httpd folder missing and I need it to setup my mail server and anyone can help me what can I do without reinstalling my Cent OS? Here is the error msg :

I am novice to Package Management in Debian family of Linux distributions. My Internet connection is working fine. But I am not able to install any package with apt-get package Manager. I'm a Windows admin who does part time Linux server installs. Most of the time I'm asked to deploy a generic Windows server, install a few basic applications and if needed some other applications like Nagios or Zabbix. My question is for long term support, or patching should I be focusing on deploying with repositories to install applications or compile from source? In the Windows world you can patch and update from Windows Update, but is there problems using 3rd party repositories for future updates? Would one of these locations go off line?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am installing Mysql 5.0 on Centos5.5 on different location. Like by default mysql rpm installs mysql in /var/lib partition but i want to install it on other HDD. So, i created a new partition on new HDD. The problem is in which configuration file of mysql i should change datadir and socket path because there are 4-5 configuration files i.e my-huge.cnf, my-large.cnf, my-medium.cnf, my-small.cnf etc.
I changed path in all these files by adding new datadir and socket line but after modifying mysql is not starting. So, how can we install mysql on other partition and which configuration file we have to do all the changes.
I am using ubuntu 9.04. is it possible to install MySQL on my pc??How?? if not what are other possible database system softwares i can use???
