After I login to KDE I see an error dialog saying,"ESC is already running, but is not responding. To open a new windows, you must first close the existing ESC process, or restart your system."
What is ESC and what can I do to stop this error dialog from popping up right after I login?
After "yum install emacs" & "yum install emacs-ess", I was able to install emacs on my X86_64 running Fedora 10.
If I run one session of emacs everything works fine.
Once I start a second session and try to resize or move the emacs window, the system stops responding.
Today I tried to start Firefox but, for no apparent reason, I got this message:

I'm trying to install Thunderbird on my mom's desktop. She has been using Outlook Express for years, and I want her to get away from that as well as Windows in general (her computer has a true 1.8 GHZ single-core processor and only 512MB of ram). The first thing I did was install Thunderbird on her XP partition, then I copied the .default file to a flash drive and copied it into the folder where I saw that Thunderbird had another .default folder in (although I never created a user for it). I deleted that folder and replaced it with the .default folder from her XP system. I then went to load Thunderbird, and it gave me the error message that is in the title.
I restarted Ubuntu, and it still gave me the same error message. I then deleted Thunderbird from the Synaptic, Software Center, and Terminal. Every time I went to re-install it I got the same message when I tried to open the program. I did find a couple of threads here that had problems with the same error, but it was after they upgraded the software.I found a lot of threads on Google on how to convert from Outlook to Thunderbird, but most of them were 2-3 years old, and the instructions were useless.
I've been working on getting NoMachine and FreeNX working together ... and they're both working well, listening on different ports (guess I should write a howto). At some point I decided to write an init script to control FreeNX behaviour (start, stop, status, setup), since the Ubuntu version has one (called freenx-server) and openSUSE doesn't, but I noticed that it was not necessary, as FreeNX got started automatically... but how ? I could not find any init.d script or command which would start the FreeNX server. Indeed it wasn't actually running :

My server (CentOS 5.5) is a ldap client authenticate to LDAP server (Successfully authenticate) I use pam for ssh. I can ssh successfully with any users on system. But I cannot su - from ssh. It display the error: Could not open session. I look to log file and it shows: # tail -f /var/log/secure

I'm running xen as installed from the CentOS Virtualization Suite and I'm having some problems. One of my VMs powers off immediately after an error during 'POST'. Is there a way to stop it from immediately powering off so I can see the error? And there's also at least one error message that appears for a split second after the vm craps out, before the gui console reports 'Guest not running'.

Well after messing with compiz Opacity I managed to make all panels and windows transparent. Only thing I see is desktop background and icons. Tried ctrl+although+f1 and running gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/compiz
Then a reboot. Same issue. Next ran metacity --replace I get: Windows manager error: Unable to open X display

I just updated my CentOS machine from 5.2 to 5.3. After rebooting, I found a few commands are not responding after the update.
The non-responding commands are:finger, groups,chown I did nothing after the update.
The server is a Dell 1650 1U server, which a fresh install of CentOS 5.3, formatting the drive in the process. It has two e1000 NIC's and based on the wiring eth0 is the public segment and eth1 is the private segment.Both nic's make a solid 100mb connection to the cisco switch, and I can ping both interfaces "just fine".
If I run nmap on a remote PC that is also dual-homed in this fashion, I get the same response as to which ports are open (essentially everything since I disabled iptables temporarily to troubleshoot this issue) on both interfaces, which would be the expected result.But... and here is the source of my confusion... I can see the server by pinging it, I can use SSH to make such a connection and log in, but I cannot get apache to "answer the phone" so to speak.Runing "tcpdump -i eth0" shows me that my browser on a remote PC is attempting to connect, but without reply.If I send my browser to the ip address of eth1, I get the default CentOS new web server page as is the norm.Nothing shows in my /var/log/httpd/access_log or error_log at all... apache simply isn't answering.The httpd.conf is the original, and the one line I attempted to 'adjust' was the "listen 80" line, which I added the ip addresses specifically, but that didn't change anything.I am unsure how nmap can indicate the port is open and there is a service behind it, when on the same PC that ran nmap, I cannot connect at all.Might anyone have a clue to toss me so I can work to figure this out?
When i try to create a virtual machine using the Windows 7 Enterprise Evaluation iso file, everything goes as planned untill i click on the start button. when i click on it i get two error messages. the first: Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Windows 7. The virtual machine 'Windows 7' has terminated unexpectedly during startup with exit code 1. Kernel driver not installed (rc=-1908). The VirtualBox Linux kernel driver (vboxdrv) is either not loaded or there is a permission problem with /dev/vboxdrv. reinstall the kernel module by executing
'/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup'
as root. Users of Ubuntu, Fedora or Mandriva should install the DKMS package first. This package keeps track of Linux kernel changes and recompiles the vboxdrv kernel module if necessary. i have installed the DKMS package, but when i try to run the command stated in the error message, i get another error message in the terminal:

I upgraded to 13.1 from 13.0 a few days ago. I have a Toshiba Satellite L3655D that I leave on constantly. Twice now, I have woken up to windows (urxvt and firefox) that don't accept keyboard input. I can paste into them and they respond, clicking is fine, but the keyboard either barely sends or is completely ignored - if I tap a bunch of keys, one or two might go through, eventually. New windows work fine, so I have to replace everything I have open.
edit:I switched to XFCE for 2 days and the issue didn't appear, but my other laptop with the same fluxbox settings also did not have any problems. I switched the original laptop back to fluxbox (and happened to upgrade the ATI drivers around the same time) and haven't had it happen since. If this happens to you, try restarting X.
after a update to 5.3 from 5.2 via the built in updater the system stops responding to visitors from the outside, http that is, but heres the odd part, if i say run firefox on the server the connection works also for some reason if i'm on the network with my own computer the connection seems to stay open but as soon as i stop using these the server seems to drop the conenctions, but as i said as soon as i go via my comp to the server via say ie it works right away.
this i tried yesterday:did a cold boot to see if some update had problems and actually needed a reboot even if the updater didn't say, after it started the connection seemed to be open for a good while, and not untill this morning from a outside source the connection is droped again, not been on my comp nor logged on on the server today yet.the install only has on it what i got from the dvd, and as far as i know it has all the updates on it since 5.3 came out.my network is built up like this:

I was wondering if anyone else has noticed the following behavior lately. Sometimes, when I enter a directory, during the generation of thumbnails nautilus freezes up with 100% cpu use. It has to be killed. It will then happen whenever I try to enter that specific directory with nautilus (although access with Konqueror or command-line is fine). Turning off the previews allows nautilus to enter that directory (usually... once even that didn't work). If I create a new directory and move all the files from the troublesome directory into the new directory, I can enter the new directory with nautilus and it works fine, even with thumbnails turned on. I can even rename that directory to the same name as the problematic one had and it will work. Long ago this behavior used to happen very rarely, then it seemed to be fixed, and now it is happening again but fairly frequently.
I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this and, if so, do they know what is causing it? A simple solution is to turn off thumbnails but I'd prefer another solution.

I am running CentOS 5.2 on a server here in my home. It runs Dovecot and Postfix and also serves as a website host for a small website of mine. Everything works fine. POP, SMTP, Webmail, WWW, all works great and has for ages.Here's the issue. I recently reinstalled a clean copy of Windows 7 on a workstation in my home onto a new harddrive(I still have the old drive int he machine so I can boot to it as well). I setup the Windows Live Mail client to send/receive mail with my mail/web server. However, it won't connect to the POP server on my server machine.Here's the kicker. If I boot to the old harddrive that is running Windows 7, it connects fine to my mailserver and can send/receive just fine. I've checked, rechecked and rechecked and all mail settings on the mail clients on both drives are identical.
Note: The installations of Windows 7 on both drives is identical. Same computer name/ same credentials, same IP, etc. However, as I stated, I can send/receive email with my server if I boot to my old drive, but if I boot to my new drive, I cannot send/receive.
I am trying to write a BASH script that will help people print on Linux Servers (CentOS). I am asking the file in the script. We use a print server That have specific named print queue/ports.
The syntax I am using is:

I am bit new to Linux and have setup caching-only name server with Centos 5.5. when i do dig server, it provide resolutions. but when i use the server IP as DNS on my windows client, it says, "connection refused" on the NSlookup output. On two Centos5 servers, yum gives a segmentation fault error when trying 'yum update' or 'yum check-update' after running 'yum clean' :

The error is the same for the other computer except while attempting to update the rpmforge repository. Nothing has really changed on the servers in some time and 'yum update' worked fine on each yesterday and I have no idea why they would both suddenly fail!
I have recently resurrected an old X Windows application and I am having a problem getting a CentOS 5.3 client to run the application from a CentOS 5.3 host.
If I am logged in as root to the client side and ssh -Y over to the host, then run xclock, everything works just fine.
However, if after I ssh -Y over to the host, I then su - userx on the host, and then run xclock, I always get the "Can't open display" error.
I have tried:
Running xhost + on the client. doing the "xauth add display MIT-COOKIE xxxxxxxxxxxx" on the client & host, both as the root user, and as the userx. I can't seem to get a definitive answer as to which user and which machine (client/host) this needs to be run as.
Also, when you "xauth list $DISPLAY" you get nothing, (because it is either localhost:0.0 as root, or :0.0 as the su - user) you have to "xauth list", and then you get a list of cookies, but since the "echo $DISPLAY" doesn't match any of them, it is not obvious which one to use. Also, they are ALL "host/unix:X.0", so I assume they are all socket based, and as such I would assume that the their cookies would not be usable for remote TCP connections?
I also saw information about using netstat -anp to look for 60** LISTENERS, I could not find any on the client or host sides.
Nothing seems to work.
I heard about a program sux that is on ubuntu, but I could not find it for CentOS. Is there an equivalent on CentOS?
I have searched the web and found lots of info in forums all over the net with what appears to be the correct way to do this, still nothing appears to work.
What is confusing is that if the TCP LISTENERS were not there, I should not be able to get it to work as root either, so it must be in the transition of the su - userx.
I am a long time Unix system admin and this one has got me stumped.When I try to run the system-config-network (or any of the system-config-xxx programs) from the links on the GNOME interface, I get a message pop-up that says, "Unknown error" and no additional information. I have also opened a terminal and run it from the command line (/usr/bin/system-network-config) and I get the same "Unknown error" pop-up. I was not the one who originally configured this server, so I am not sure of the history or how it might have been broken. I can't seem to find any debugging information or even any command line parameters that might give me a clue what the complaint is. There is no error number or any other helpful hint as to the cause of the problem.
I have been manually editing the config files so the server is up and running but it is tedious to manage the server without the GUI.Has anyone seen this before? Sometimes I connect to my Debian box from another computer (using SSH on Cygwin or Linux), and once ina while I want to run some console apps. And sometimes some of these apps might complain about "another intance, Error: an instance of newsbeuter is already running (PID: 2496)". Is there a work around for this issue at all(without killing the original instance") ? The reason I do not want to kill the app because there might be 2 users connected to the same machine that might be using the same app.

I open ssh and other ports and port 7001 for example but when I go to check to see if they are open or try to connect to them. It shows that they are still closed. I am using - [URL] Also yes my ports are open on my router. I know my router works fine with opening ports because I have shoutcast setup on another computer with xp that is currently running. I am willing to pay for who can ever get this fixed for me...
