Ubuntu Servers :: 10.10 - Bind 9 Not Accepting DNS Client Queries

Feb 13, 2011

However I just built a 10.10 server, installed webmin, vmware, and the server is working perfectly. I configured my bind 9 server using the latest webmin and on the server everything resolves perfectly to both the internet and lan. I have it set to 127.0.0.1, the server ip address is 10.1.50.25. However, it will not accept dns client queries in which they cannot resolve to the lan or internet. I have the dhcp giving out the dns server 10.1.50.25. NSLOOKUPS from the client show query refused. I know there has to be some setting or config that will allow clients to query but I am not able to locate it, and I am not totally knowledgeable of named.conf and been all through the webmin module and configuration settings.

Server :: BIND Refuses Queries ?

Feb 15, 2010

I am currently running the latest version of Bind, and for some completely unknown reason I can NOT get queries to work for PTR records. All queries to the servers for reverse name lookup get query denied:

Using domain server:
Name: 66.150.173.1
Address: 66.150.173.1#53
Aliases:

Host 27.173.150.66.in-addr.arpa not found: 5(REFUSED)

And it shows in my logs:

I am at my wits ends with the piece of crap. Can anyone shine some light on why this damn Bind install won't respond to these queries?

For reference here is my named.conf:

CentOS 5 :: Openldap Client Won't Bind To Server

Jul 2, 2011

I can't get the client server to authenticate to the openldap server. I can authenticate on the server itself though. I can su to, login and shh into the openldap server and become a ldap user. I just can't become an ldap user on the client.I didn't setup TLS/SSL. I can do that after I have it working. I'm using hashed passwords though. I don't have replication setup. I'm am tying to setup the most basic openldap environment then build from there. I have read the openldap section in the admin guide.

My setup at home.

Openldap server light.deathnote.net -- 10.0.1.21
client server vm-centos01.deathnote.net 10.0.1.7 -- VM on virtualbox
Virtualbox host L (OS MAC) 10.0.1.2
router (apple airport extreme) / default gatway 10.0.1.1

All computer can reach the internet and ping each other. When I installed centos I disabled SELinux.I used these guids to setup my openldap.

Below I have included some output from the files I'm using with openldap.

[root@vm-centos01 ~]# tail /var/log/messages

Server :: BIND 9.5 On Fedora Core 9 Not Resolving Dns Queries

Apr 21, 2010

I have this ISP grade Nameserver running on BIND 9.5 on Fedora Core 9 64 Bit.

Its been pretty working well for sometime until a last week when we noticed it stopped resolving for our clients using on our service.

It gives correct authouritative answers for our own ISP domain with the A, PTR and MX intact but does not return resolving queries back to clients.

Below are my files

This is the message from /var/log/messages

The 41.223.x.x and 41.215.x.x ip address are from our ISP subnet and so are our own clients being denied.

The box is also hosting our traffic graph server which is on a LAMP but listens on another IP/ethernet card.

So far the load on the server is minimal as is a Dell R200 rack server.

Red Hat / Fedora :: BIND-slow Queries Results ?

Mar 8, 2010

I have installed BIND 9.6.1-P3-RedHat-9.6.1-16.P3.fc12 on Fedora Core 12.

I found out that when i perform i DNS lookup to a some record that is not in the DNS cache or zones(means...recursive) it takes about 4 sec to give the IP results.

I dig a little bit on the internet and found out that it is a known issue but all places says that it is fixed on newer version of BIND (after version 9.3)

I tried:

1. start BIND with -4 argument ( named -4) - the server started but no changes on the delay.

2. disable IPV6 on the server - i tried the articles on the web but still i get IPV6 address.

Sep 5, 2010

trying to configure a Centos 5.5 server (simple file server with DHCP and DNS relay). I configured and tested the config (by 'service dnsmasq configtest') of dnsmasq and I got the message 'dnsdomain:host unknown (translation of the real message : hte inconnu) and I didn't find where I could define this host ! The hostname of the server is well defined and I can see it from all Windows PC's on the LAN. dnsmasq starts (with hte same message as in configtest) but when querying DNS from PC's te.g. trying to surf the Internet), I don't get replies (3 DNS servers are also well defined and operational).

Fedora Networking :: DNS Queries - Connect To A Ssh Server ?

Aug 28, 2011

How often are dns queries sent? Assume I want to connect to a ssh server, will I send one dns-query in order to do that or do I send multiple during my connection? What if I request web-pages, do I send a query only when I enter a site or will I send queries every time I visit a new page on that site?

I'm asking since I'm considering getting an account at dyn.com (the standard account for $30/yr) and it comes with 600 000 queries per month (which is way more than I expect to get but knowing exactly what it means is always good).

The server has no GUI (command line UI) while the client has a UI. I need to install a Simple Forum Machine application and I'm told to FTP the files into the server. I figured out that the best option is to load the files in the client via the GUI and then ftp them in the server. How do I transfer the files from a the client t o the server using FTP? I'm totally new to Linux so the more details the better. Also I'm trying to mount a USB key on the server but have had no luck.

CentOS 5 Server :: 5.3 Network Stops Responding?

Apr 24, 2009

after a update to 5.3 from 5.2 via the built in updater the system stops responding to visitors from the outside, http that is, but heres the odd part, if i say run firefox on the server the connection works also for some reason if i'm on the network with my own computer the connection seems to stay open but as soon as i stop using these the server seems to drop the conenctions, but as i said as soon as i go via my comp to the server via say ie it works right away.

this i tried yesterday:did a cold boot to see if some update had problems and actually needed a reboot even if the updater didn't say, after it started the connection seemed to be open for a good while, and not untill this morning from a outside source the connection is droped again, not been on my comp nor logged on on the server today yet.the install only has on it what i got from the dvd, and as far as i know it has all the updates on it since 5.3 came out.my network is built up like this:

CentOS 5 Server :: Dovecot Postfix POP Not Responding?

Jan 2, 2011

I am running CentOS 5.2 on a server here in my home. It runs Dovecot and Postfix and also serves as a website host for a small website of mine. Everything works fine. POP, SMTP, Webmail, WWW, all works great and has for ages. Here's the issue. I recently reinstalled a clean copy of Windows 7 on a workstation in my home onto a new harddrive(I still have the old drive int he machine so I can boot to it as well). I setup the Windows Live Mail client to send/receive mail with my mail/web server. However, it won't connect to the POP server on my server machine. Here's the kicker. If I boot to the old harddrive that is running Windows 7, it connects fine to my mailserver and can send/receive just fine. I've checked, rechecked and rechecked and all mail settings on the mail clients on both drives are identical.

Note: The installations of Windows 7 on both drives is identical. Same computer name/ same credentials, same IP, etc. However, as I stated, I can send/receive email with my server if I boot to my old drive, but if I boot to my new drive, I cannot send/receive.

CentOS 5 Networking :: Daemons Is Not Responding

Jun 4, 2009

The server is a Dell 1650 1U server, which a fresh install of CentOS 5.3, formatting the drive in the process. It has two e1000 NIC's and based on the wiring eth0 is the public segment and eth1 is the private segment. Both nic's make a solid 100mb connection to the cisco switch, and I can ping both interfaces "just fine".

If I run nmap on a remote PC that is also dual-homed in this fashion, I get the same response as to which ports are open (essentially everything since I disabled iptables temporarily to troubleshoot this issue) on both interfaces, which would be the expected result.But... and here is the source of my confusion... I can see the server by pinging it, I can use SSH to make such a connection and log in, but I cannot get apache to "answer the phone" so to speak.Runing "tcpdump -i eth0" shows me that my browser on a remote PC is attempting to connect, but without reply. If I send my browser to the ip address of eth1, I get the default CentOS new web server page as is the norm.Nothing shows in my /var/log/httpd/access_log or error_log at all... apache simply isn't answering. The httpd.conf is the original, and the one line I attempted to 'adjust' was the "listen 80" line, which I added the ip addresses specifically, but that didn't change anything.I am unsure how nmap can indicate the port is open and there is a service behind it, when on the same PC that ran nmap, I cannot connect at all.Might anyone have a clue to toss me so I can work to figure this out?
