Now I have a task: to avoid accidental crashes on the production servers while installing updates, my boss asked me to do clones (these clones will all be VMware virtual machines) of the servers (EXCLUDING the actual e-mails and log contents) and then to run those clones on VMWare Server. This way, first I will install and test updates on the clones and - if they will be running without crashes - I will apply the updates on the real production servers themselves.
I have already installed VMWare Server 2.0 I have a few questions: How do I build the virtual machines to exclude the actual mail files and mail logs? Can I use VMware Converter for this purpose, or do I have to use another program? How do I actually do this cloning? Is there a tutorial on how to do this?
i am trying to install centos 5.5 x86_64 as a guest OS in vmware server 2.0.2 using netinstall iso. Installation runs fine until the point, when it tries to install selinux-policy-targeted-2.4.6-279.el5.noarch, the whole virtual pc hangs at this.any ideas? i tried to google few things about this, but i have found nothing. this has happened 3 times in row, whole virtual pc always hangs at the same package. i dont have any other problems with vmware, gentoo runs and installs fine in it.i would prefer to do installation using netinstall.iso, it would take a lot of time to download all cds or whole dvd and all i require is a very basic set of packages.

I have an i5 Thinkpad running Windows 7 64-bit. VT is enabled in the BIOS. I have installed vmware server v 2.0.2 but am unable to install Centos 5.5 x86_64 as a guest OS. Peter Anvin' and nothing else. The installation splash screen never appears. As a test, I downloaded the first of 7 iso files for the 32-bit version of Centos 5.5 and pointed the CD/DVD drive to that iso. In that case, the installation starts as expected. I would really like to get the 64-bit version installed and running.

I took a snapshot of my machine with internet working
If I reboot my machine I lose internet. This makes no sense to me.
I ifconfig eth0 down then ifconfig eth0 up and still no internet
Weird thing
I check ifconfig and my bcast ID is 192.168.2.255 when it is supposed to be 192.168.45.255
(When the internet is working if I check ifconfig the bcast ID is 192.168.2.255)
IF I change my bcast my internet stops working
If I reboot my machine my internet stops working
I checked /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 and I see that in my snapshot (where the internet is actually working) the bcast is at 192.168.2.255
Without rebooting if I edit that script and I put it to .45.255 my internet stops working
If I reboot my machine at any time my internet stops working
I have also just realized that I cannot ping my gateway..
I have stumbled upon a rather peculiar problem whilst trying to rescue a CentOS system. For this effort I have to connect a USB stick and boot from that stick. That does not pose a problem. The system contains 3 disks (scsi) which are, not surprisingly, found as sda, sdb and sdc. The problem is that the USB stick is also assigned as 'sdc'. And so the process comes to a grinding halt, because there is no image found on sdc.
I have to find means to make usb-storage (or whichever module decides on using sdc for the USB stick) choose sdd as devicename. But how?
I did a pretty extensive search through the forums, but to no effect. Probably because I did not really know how to construct the finding key for this specific problem.
Bonus points for one that incorporates the fact that this system is at a remote site on which I login via a network connected KVM...

I have vmware pointing at my cd drive, I mount the cdrom and when I ls, it lists the contents of the cd. But when I go to reboot centos, it doesn't boot from the cd and just boots normally.

Configuration: host box that have an Intel Quad Core CPU Q8300.
Host is CentOS 5.5 64bit, VmWare 1.0.10, guests are CentOS 5.5 32bit (and an Ipcop test box that have 2.4.x kernel)
Considering the 3 CentOS 5.5 32 bit guests (same config for grub and ntpd), I have 1 VM that usually havent' any timedrift, the remaining 2 VMs gain about 15 mins every hour (!!!). constantly, indipendently from load or Similar problem for the IpCop VM.
I need to disable ntpd daemon and put a cron job because ntpd seems not work (but manual ntpdate work, so no fw problem). Sometime is one of the VM that have no driftime problem; after some host reboot, is another. No matter how I configure it (apparently). The VM's hwclock have little or no drift, the system clock have the drift ... I can't find any logic on this ... Some months ago I use Vmware Server 2.x, but switched to 1.x for the annoyng glib problem and the not appreciated new interface. Initially no problems, next (little time before updating the host from 5.4 to 5.5), problems started ... so no apparent ralations with update from 5.4 to 5.5.
I have a new public mail server running under Vmware Server 2.0 installed on Windows Server 2008. I'm not satisfy about performance, virtual machine has got 3gb of ram and 2 virtual cpu. Physical machine has got one intel xeon cpu 2.4ghz quad core, 8 gb of ram and 3 hdd 500gb raid5. I already set this option: Fit all virtual machine memory into reserved host RAM. I performed a system update yesterday to CentOS version 5.4. Now I cannot get vmware to start. I get the error "VMware Server is installed, but it has not been (correctly) configured for the running kernel. To (re-)configure it, invoke the following command: /usr/bin/vmware-config.pl." I tried running vmware-config but that did not resolve the issue. I saw the bug related to 2.0.x (after the update), but that does not seem to apply to 1.0.9.

Within the CentOS I can only use the Screen Resolution 800x600.
As I have a VMware installed I use the VMware grafic adapter shown in the hardware selection.
Even if I configure the VM graphic adapter within the ESX to use 1600x1200.
Is there any change to configure a higher resolution?
I can't install centos 5 on vmware esxi 4 server.I use the netinstall cdrom and I get the splash screen with the kernel menu.After this, I can choose a language but then I get this error: "The CentOS CD was not found in any of your CDROM drives. Please insert the CentOS CD and press OK to retry."
I have tried it with the image on the datastore, a unc-path and as physical cdrom.I have tested all modes in the vmware cdrom settings (passthrogh IDE or Emulate IDE) - nothing helps.

View 4 Replies View RelatedSo I have a pretty big networking nightmare on my hands right now. Stepped into the dog crap with this one, told my employer that I knew how to setup vmware servers right? Its not hard, install CentOS, install vmware, run the config tool, bridge the network, down the road we all go right? We have 3 servers running about 10 virtual servers.
Here is what we have all together.
CFU <- This is the internet. We have IP ranges xx.18.230 - xx.18.241 Gateway is xx.18.254 and subnet is xx.255.128
DELL PowerConnect 3348 Switch <- This is what everything is pretty much jammed into.
VMH1 <- This machine has 2 NICs
eth0 connects to the DELL switch somewhere on the upper 30+ ports
eth1 connects to the DELL switch on port 1.
It uses firestarter and is the gateway for our internal internet on 192.168.11.XX using IP 11.254. It has 4 vm's on it. One of them is the domain controller, hooked to eth1 using IP xx.11.1. The other one is a server for managing remote backups, it has an external IP linked to eth0 of xx.18.234. The other 2 vm's are for misc remote login stations that use internal ip addresses linked to eth1. It hasn't had a single problem communicating on either one of the ports..
VMH2 <- This server hosts a web server, and some other misc stations.
It hosts a web server on xx.18.230 and xx.18.231
It also hosts 2 workstations on a seperate network, through another router that is wireless....
Now, we have the problem child, VMH3
VMH3 <- This hosts...nothing. It sits and has a ton of storage, but does absolutely nothing, but won't communicate out either one of its network ports.
The xx.36.xx and xx.22.xx networks are there because we have multiple businesses in the building that shouldn't see each other.
I have a problem with the VMware Workstation 6.5.2 build-156735 on CentOS 5.3. When I start a VM then, after 10-20 minutes the machine and VMware Workstation freeze. The mysterious thing was, after the freeze a large of folders from my two partitons were lost. ( I have two partitons on a NVIDIA Raid,configured with dmraid.) But the partitons still here, I can see them and they are mounted. Its very mysterious.
I have installed the VM's to a folder on my raid. When I killed the processes and restart VMware Workstation I cant start a VM.
VMware says that CentOS 5.3 are supported for the VMware Workstation 6.5.2 build-156735.
This is my first post, and i have a question with the fence software for VMWare ESXi. The fence_vmware agent only works with ESX, and redhat (in you GIT repository) has submited a new agent called fence_vmware_ng that claims to work with ESXi. But the problem is that they do not specify the version that works with that. Anybody has test the fence_vmware_ng agent for VMWare ESXi 4.0 ?, i follow the instructions here: [URL]...and i can install the software, the API from VMWARE site, etc, but in the moment when i run the agent nothing happen, The agent connects to server, i see in logs, but the off-reboot-on operations not works. Only works status operations, that return the state of a virtual machine. I have CentOS 5.3 (fully today updated) with RHCS.

So, I decided to turn to the experts and see if you can provide a better solution than [URL]. The system sees both CPU's and all of the cores (cat /proc/cpuinfo). I have tried with HT and without HT (I never run HT anymore; seems to hurt performance in my workloads). I've tried the recent and newest kernels for CentOS 5.4 and still have no luck. There seems to be lots of people having this issue, but no real solutions.

I have an Intel i7 with CentOS x64 installed, with the intention of using it as the host O/S with VMWare Workstation to run a number of virtual machines. I had this all working until the kernel was updated to 2.6.18-164.11.1.el5, Now I can no longer start any VMs. I have tried reinstalling CentOS, updating it first, then installing VMWare Workstation - no different. I have tried running as root - no different.
Is anyone else aware of this problem? Does anyone else run VMWare on CentOS x64?
2.6.18-194.8.1.el5xen is the reported kernel that I'm running while the headers that are installed are listed as 2.6.18-194.8.1.el5-i686. I assume these are the same, or at least close enough that it shouldn't matter.
However, when I run vmware-config-tools.pl to configure it it says it cannot find the kernel headers. I've tried pointing it to /usr/src/2.6.18-194.8.1.el5-i686/ and /usr/src/2.6.18-194.8.1.el5-i686/include (not sure which of the two I'm supposed to do as online instructions contradict one another) it says that is invalid and there seems to be no way to force it since it just complains without letting me use it anyway. What can I do? Running centos 5 btw on vmware workstation 7.
