I have installed CentOS 5.5 and Skype (static version)
And for some unknown reason, my voice through mic sounds like a robot.
I have tried to use my mic with Skype on my Windows XP machine, it works fine. Hence, it is not my mic issue.
I've been using opensuse for about a week.(although I'm not completely a linux noob) I've been slowly moving more of the stuff I do on windows over to suse. I thought my sound was working fine until I decided to get mp3s running on amarok. I followed a bunch of guides which didn't work. While I was messing around with stuff I noticed a startup noise. I just assumed it didn't have a startup noise. At some point I broke all of my sound except running wine, so I reinstalled.
Now that I've noticed, none of my notification sounds work. Stuff like skype, firefox, and wine still give me sounds.
(If anyone could point me in the direction of a good place to get mp3s working on amarok would be nice as well.)
I was wondering if there exists a software that can change your voice over Skype (acting as a virtual sound driver in order to change the sound in real time). It would be nice because I really want one of these.

Skype informs me that I must change my settings from Pulse audio to ALSA using a program called pavucontrol. I must delete Pulse audio, but although i have tried I can see no way to do this.Pavu control does not seem to install either.

Does anyone know of a good client with good video and voice quality that will work on both platforms. I'd like it to use open standards so at least we can use different OS specific clients if one is not available for both platforms. Googling hasn't yielded much and some of the results refer to really old (~2006) articles or apps. I hope I'm not doomed to using Skype. I've resisted so long with using SIP clients for voice but am stumped now that I want to include video.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm running Ubuntu Maverick on an Intel H55 mobo. I have the sound configured to output through speakers on my monitor, via HDMI. That has been working fine. Last night I installed Skype (2.1.0.81) in order to chat to someone back in UK. When I go to the sound devices configuration in Skype, each of the devices (Microphone, Speakers and Ringing) only have a single choice: 'PulseAudio server (local)'.
In order to get my usb-connected phone handset working with Skype I have had to go to the main sound preferences and alter both input and output to '9980 Analog'. This works fine - I can make a Skype test call and playback my own voice. However, all my system sounds now go out on the usb phone handset - also the Skype ring goes to the handset, which is pretty useless because it can't be heard from more than a couple of feet away.
How can I make Skype use the 9980 device for voice in and out, and use the system speakers 'Internal Audio Digital (HDMI)' for the ringing, while leaving all the system sounds to go out on the HDMI output too? I'm sure that I managed to make Skype work much better on an older system (using Gutsy, or Intrepid???). It seems, to me that there is a lack of fine audio control in my system.
I know that we can use xvidcap or istanbul etc to record our screen casts.. but is there any software in linux which can record incoming gmail/skype voice calls??. maybe incoming gmail/skype video calls with sound also?. I dont need to record my input sound, but the incoming sound?

I have a HP laptop model HP G72 Notebook PC, Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i3 CPU M 350 @2.27GHz & the Sound devices are Intel(R) Display Audio & Realtek High Definition Audio.
This machine came loaded with Windows7 & I have successfully dual booted it with Ubuntu Lucid 10.04.3.
The problem I am having is that I cannot get the sound to work at all in Ubuntu. No opening sounds or anything else that I have tried. No Web sounds, no CD sounds... All sounds work fine on the Windows side, but nothing I have tried so far seem to work with Ubuntu & I have tried many options from many threads.

lenny gives me either system sounds, or other sounds like flash plugin sounds like videos, cd playback etc., but not both. to hear videos i have to disable system sounds. as soon as i tick enable software sound mixing (esd) in system -> preferences -> sound -> sounds, videos goes. a message saying it could not open the resource as something else is using it comes up when trying to play a cd. sounds like a threading problem in some program. what should i do to get sounds to be equitably shared by all?

I am trying to create a RS232 C program that executes a series of commands down the line to a robot. Everything seems to work fine, except any sequential write to the serial port. At first I thought it was the UART's buffer being filled too fast, but even with a 50 uS delay it still throws the error.

I've got the latest version of Flash installed,and it works most of the time,t occasionally a video or game will stop working and the area it was in will just turn into a grey box. Usually it only does this if I leave the page the video's on, but it keeps doing it when I'm playing Robot Unicorn Attack on Adult Swim's site, too
View 14 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to figure out what in the world is going on with my sound in OpenSuSE. I put in a brand new Audigy chipset soundcard and finally got some sound to come out of the speakers. I used the guide here: SDB:AudioTroubleshooting - openSUSE. to fix the permissions on my sound and am able to get sound-test to play sounds as well as connect to the sound device in my vmware and play sounds. That being said, I have terrible sound quality coming out. There is a lot of static sound like white noise and the volume of the actual sound played is very low compared to the noise. The sounds also distort somewhat.
I have tried the pulse audio change in the tutorial above also and have been searching around google. The only problem that I saw similar was a person who fixed the problem by updating KDE. I don't have KDE, I'm using Afterstep.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have installed flash-plugin from rpmforge, video on flash sites works, but audio doesn't. Similarly neither the audio or mic works in skype. The soundcard is definitely recognised and I can change the levels using alsamixer. Furthermore, sound works in mplayer. Using CentOS 5.3 64bit fully up todate with rpmforge and adobe repositories enabled.

I am able to play the default sound in the utility, however, I get no sound when I select the device in Skype as Default Device CA0106. Is there a permission somewhere I am missing, because I noticed when I try to play an internet radio stream using Shockwave Flash, I also have no audio.
There are 3 versions of Skype for Ubuntu on the Skype download section. Does anybody know which is the correct one for Ubuntu Karmic?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently bought a IOgear USB bluetooth adapter and a Sony DRBT101/BLK bluetooth headphones to use with my computer.Whenever I try to make a call using these headphones with skype, I can speak for say 10 seconds and then the headset disconnects completely from the system. I then have to reconnect the headset by switching it off and on. I do not have this problem listening to music using A2DP. It works fine with my mobile phone.When I change the profile to Telephony Duplex (HSP/HFP), it shows up as hands free, I thought it should be headset in blueman manager. My friend uses Plantronics headset with is Dell laptop with built in bluetooth and he says his comes up as headset not hands free. Could this be causing the problem?
