View 2 Replies View RelatedI use CentOS as a host for VMWare virtual machines. I like the CentOS install to be as minimal as possible. However, if I try to remove stuff I don't want at the install stage, the install invariably crashes. So I just accept the defaults, and it works fine.
So I would like to know the best way to get rid all the stuff I don't want (which is pretty well everything except Gnome, vi, samba and an email reader).
I basically just want to be able to run XFree86 on one of my clients and have networking support. Does anyone know what packages I need to add in my ks.cfg to meet this requirement?

View 4 Replies View RelatedLooking at the various OS image download options, I see that I need to download/burn 8 ISO images for CentOS5.5 x86_64. Trying to see if it is at-all possible to avoid downloading/burning all 8 CD's, and make-do with the 1st one alone. My target platform is a commodity desktop running AMD AthlonII X2 250, with dual-channel 4GB DDR3 @1333MHz, and 500GB 7200rpm SATA (no RAID, SW or HW).
I read in another forum post that for minimal install without X, the 1st CD should suffice. Is this correct ? While I do not expect this forum to answer OpenVZ questions, but if someone happens to have experience in installing OpenVZ on such a system, how much extra I might have to download online, to get the system functional.
The guestOS in the OpenVZ partitions would be a mix of CentOS5.5 64-bit and 32-bit, and few running Ubuntu 10.04.1 32-bit. I am told that this is possible. Effectively it means I'd need the (pseudo?) 32-bit library support.
Continuing on my quest to build a system with sole purpose of being a LAMP server, I am trying to have the bare minimum number of packages installed. I'm not trying to disable as many deamons as possible, but actually remove any package that is not required. It might sound a bit extreme but each package that is installed that is not needed is using valuable space on the expensive (and small) 36GB 15krpm SAS disk.
Also it is a damage control approach, in that assuming a cracker finds an exploit in Apache or PHP that allows them to run executables on the filesystem then taking away as many tools as possible will help in damage limitation. For example I don't want an SSH client installed on the system as it has no purpose for me but could be used by a cracker to access other systems on the network, if they compromise that system.
I have installed the absolute minimum from the 5.3 install by deselecting everything during install but that still leaves a great deal of unnecessary packages installed. Seeing as how the system is a 64bit installation and will have no 32bit apps running on it I have first uninstalled all the i386 versions of various libraries. I presume their only function is to provide compatibility for 32bit apps.
I have been looking for information about removing other packages but I don't seem to be able to find information on real dependancies. For example I believe I have no need for dmraid as it is for managing software RAID arrays that I have no intention using. but if I attempt to remove it the dependancies include kernel and mkinitrd. What I can't figure out though is if these are hard dependancies in that those packages will fail to work or soft ones that simply mean without dmraid it will not be possible to configure the software raid module that is loaded into the kernel.
What packages would people recommend to remove, anyone seen a good guide to reducing down CentOS/RHEL to the absolute minimum ? python-elementtree-1.2.6 : Is this really required by YUM ? m2crypto-0.16 x86_64 : Is this really used by YUM, I didn't think YUM connected via SSL ?
Problems with xen 3.1.2 creating and installing domU CentOS 5.5 I am trying to do a virt-install --prompt --paravirt, and the install error out while trying to download install RPMs. I have googled for xen centos virt-install and various permutations. View 4 Replies View RelatedAfter a long time I tried ubuntu(9.10) again on my fileserver, I have some remarks; why does a minimal server installation include X/openoffice? I don't need document conversion on a fileserver and I bet a lot of people don't. Wouldn't it be better to create a new server package and leave minimal minimal? low memory installs (64mb) don't work unless you configure swap by hand in between things, 64mb ram is a lot in my eyes. I mean, not to be rude but if I wanted all this I could've better installed Solaris.

I would like to sync the web folders using rsync. However, when I sync the files from the Cpanel host the permissions look as follows:

But that doesn't work on the Webmin server which needs the following:

It seems the Cpanel install has the group as 'nobody' whilst webmin has it the same as the file owner. I can fix this by running:

But as the file transfers will be frequent, I don't want the files to be inaccessible until chown is run.
So, what I really want to know is - how can I change things on the 'webmin' server so that files with ownership owner:nobody will run?
I built a home server (NAS/WWW/SSH/media server etc) and chose CentOS 5 as the OS (stability, easy of configuration).I was just about to start tuning the power consumption when I realised that the kernel CentOS uses is so "old" that it does not support the latest reduced power consumption enhancements that Linux has achieved in big strides in the recent past (we are probably still talking 6-12+ months ago e.g. tickless kernel)..
So my questions; 1) I know CentOS was maybe not meant for home servers (certainly its not its primary purpose), but if it is, any ideas of what kind of power consumption it takes (I know its relative) and if there are particular power consumptions that are worthwhile?
2) Do you recommend me compiling my own 2.6.21+ kernel from kernel.org or am I just likely to have compatibility issues (I really did not want to do that) or when is CentOS 5.4 supposed to have a newer 2.6.21+ version kernel?
Was it wrong of me in principle to choose CentOS for a home server when I am power conscious? (I don't have a low-power VIA processor either but a P4 so I am really just hoping to make do with software changes).
I have a few mail servers, a mail log server and a web server running on Centos 5. Now I have a task: to avoid accidental crashes on the production servers while installing updates, my boss asked me to do clones (these clones will all be VMware virtual machines) of the servers (EXCLUDING the actual e-mails and log contents) and then to run those clones on VMWare Server. This way, first I will install and test updates on the clones and - if they will be running without crashes - I will apply the updates on the real production servers themselves.
I have already installed VMWare Server 2.0 I have a few questions: How do I build the virtual machines to exclude the actual mail files and mail logs? Can I use VMware Converter for this purpose, or do I have to use another program? How do I actually do this cloning? Is there a tutorial on how to do this?
If I ssh from my laptop (running F10) to the server (centos 5.2) it asks for the password, but everytime I enter the correct password it says incorrect password. when I do the same from the server to my laptop I can get in just fine. I think my passwords are stored as ssha in the LDAP (I tried clear passwords and that dosen't work either).

I've installed CentOS 5.3 on a machine, and I need a Samba version 3.2 or higher. Since 3.4 is out, I thought I'd grab that. But, "yum list|grep samba" gives me only version 3.0.33. Is there a package of Samba I can grab that will upgrade the 3.0 installation so that I don't have two laying around? If not and I need to compile from source, do you have any suggestions for what arguments I should give configure? I'm not used to Linux coming from the BSD world

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am running an application that requires use of my /etc/hosts file. In it, I have my machine name and its LAN ip address. The program creates a service on a specific port, then attempts to connect to it based on the host name. So my hosts file has to be correct.I added the nameservers to resolv.conf and now my application will not run. My guess is that the computer is checking the name servers first, timing out then checking the hosts file.Is there a way I can tell the system to check the hosts file first, then DNS. I thought it should behave that way by default, but it does not appear to.
View 1 Replies View Relatedi am currently trying to install vsFTP onto my new linux server and btw i just started using linux today this is my first time using linux so i got the ftp installed good it got downloaded and everything then i went to open a port for my server for vsFTP i used this comand to open it "-A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -m state --state NEW -m tcp -p tcp --dport 21 -j ACCEPT" then i closed it by pressing ESC then :wq! and it brought me back to my comand line again so now when i try to start the ip table thing with the comand "service iptables start" then when i execute that comand putty respondes with this "Applying iptables firewall rules: iptables-restore: line 1 failed [FAILED]"

I installed mysql mysql-server php-mysql perl-DBD-mysql libdbi-dbd-mysql via "yum install -y" on a server running CentOS 5.3 X86_64 The install completes successful with no errors, but once I start mysqld via "chkconfig --level 35 mysqld on" ; "service mysqld start" There are no errors in /var/log/mysqld.log netstat shows mysqld listening on 3306 and localhost is in /etc/hosts

View 5 Replies View RelatedI've installed the CentOS 5.1 from a CD only yesterday and everything is working fine except Mysql that came from the CD distribution. I have detected that my system has mysql.

However I'm unable to find mysqld, safe_mysqld or mysql_install_db in my filesysytem.
