CentOS 5 :: Restoring With Cpio - Command Correct?
Nov 12, 2009
The last time I did a restore using cpio under CentOS 3.9 it took a very long time for me to find my seemingly correct command wasn't working and I ended up doing the work in Knoppix. This time I thought I'd run my command by wiser heads before the necessary tape turns up and I spend a lot of time finding my command doesn't work. cpio -i -mtvV --block-size=128 --no-absolute-filenames /var/log/maillog* < /dev/st0
I'm getting ready to deploy a Ubuntu server in a remote location. I am deathly afraid of something going horribly wrong though, so what I'd like to do is be able to somehow image the system when it's working, and be able to restore that remotely via SSH if things go to hell. My first thoughts were that I could partition the hard drive, and install two separate instances of Ubuntu. One would be the server in it's working state, and the other one would be a separate instance of Ubuntu that I could boot into to restore an image (if that's possible).
1. If I had two separate instances of Ubuntu on two separate partitions, and I was currently booted into one of them, would it be possible to tell the Ubuntu server to reboot and boot into the other instance of Ubuntu on the other partition over SSH? (SSH is the only form of access I will have to the server)
2. Is there a better way to remotely restore a server than what I outlined above?
3. Also, I've used the dd command to make backups before, but it copies an entire hard drive byte for byte. Is there an argument I can tag on, or another command to use altogether that will only copy the bits that are being used?
We are doing some disaster recovery exercises with CentOS 5. One of the things we want to do is be able to restore to our old production server. However, after restoring the partitions the boot loader starts and then does nothing other than displaying the location of the kernel image at the top of the screen.
If I use the installation CD to boot and chroot into the system everything appears to work fine. I am not sure why the system isn't working right.
I have managed to blow up something trying to follow this:http://wiki.centos.org/AdditionalResources/Repositories/RPMForgeHere is what i get when i try: yum update
I install CentOS 5.5 from DVD, set root password and log in as root. Then I install Mondo Rescue backup solution, make a backup and restore from it. After that, the system boots just like before, but I cannot log in. When I enter the right password, a couple of lines of text flicks briefly on a screen, too fast to read and the it returns to the initial password prompt. When I enter wrong password, it says "Login incorrect".What am I doing wrong?
I am sending a message to mondo-devel mailing list, but I suspect the root of the problem lies in CentOS, or something that I do wrong with it?I have installed both i386 and x86_64 versions of CentOS 5.5 from DVD's, the problem is the same.I'm running this on a separate machine that I have just for experiments with CentOS and virtualization. I install CentOS with defaults except I uncheck "Desktop - Gnome" and check "Virtualization". I can reinstall if needed.
I have a Samsung ML-2525w, and have loaded the unified driver several times previously but long enough ago that I can't remember the correct command to install it. This is what I remember, in terminal viewer:
sudo ?(enter login)(then drag and drop the autorun file into the terminal viewer to install) I am going nuts trying to find the instructions again.
I have a need to make a rather odd filter in tcpdump- I would like to capture only all those packages on interface eth0, that are outgoing(in other words from IP 192.168.1.1, which is IP for eth0 in this computer) and doesn't have src MAC address 11:22:33:44:55:66. However, fallowing command says, that syntax is wrong:
Code: tcpdump -n -p -i eth0 src host 192.168.1.1 ether src not 11:22:33:44:55:66 Is this possible? If yes, then what is the correct command?
i am getting duplicate entries in dag rpm repository with different names in different cases !

I upgraded my OS from 5.2 to 5.3 through the system built-in updater. Then I found that I lost correct SCIM support for some applications. I was able to type Chinese and Japanese into aMSN and Skype when it was CentOS 5.2. But I can no longer do that now. Typing into some other applications still works. These applications include sylpheed, firefox, and open office....
I'm running CentOS 5.3 x86_64 on my laptop (dell vostro 1400, core2duo, 3GB RAM, intel 3945ABG wireless, nvidia video and LAN). The problem is that some times (like 15-20% of times) I shutdown the laptop, I get a kernel panic related always to the wireless kernel module (I haven't been able to get screenshot or anything). I'm using the latest centosplus kernel. I never get these panics with the standard CentOS kernel, however the standard kernel doesn't light the wireless led, and that annoys me a lot. Therefore I'm forced to use centosplus kernel. The question is not how to solve this (i know I've not given enough details) but what to do to diagnose better the cause of the panic and then correct it.
I have a server running VMWare Server on it with 4 virtual machines running. I am trying to use NTPD to keep the time correct on all of the virtual machines. On my physical server, I have installed ntpd and this is it's config file:
Quote:# ntpd.conf tinker panic 0 restrict 127.0.0.1 restrict default kod nomodify notrap server 0.vmware.pool.ntp.org server 1.vmware.pool.ntp.org server 2.vmware.pool.ntp.org
What I really want to do is compile an apache version that uses the same layout as the version included with CentOS. I can not however find the correct layout.conf file. The one from the Apache Source doesn't have a REHL or CentOS option.
having a bit of trouble getting domains to resolve to their own folder properly on my new server.
this is a plesk/centos server that is pretty much out of the box.
Problem I have is that all the domain names I add to Plesk, are all pulling files from /var/www/html . All 5 domains Ive added each got their own /var/www/vhosts/domain.com/* folders created ...
Is there something I am missing in order to have the server grab files from each domains respective folder?
What I noticed was that if I edit /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf and add the virtualhost lines to it, then the one domain name resolves properly.
i would like to know if its safe to backup root partition with cpio. I need to do an online backup of running system so i can't unmount partition or so to dump it or dd it. Is it safe? is there any chance the backup would be inconsistent or so? What is the worst what could happend? will the files used by a running system backup correctly? Running opensuse 11.3 and some basic daemons like ftp,www server...
BTW i did try search with tag "cpio" but there was not such a topic.
Centos 5.4 64bit fully updated. What I am doing is vsftpd is setup and nfs shares are mounted to a NAS server which is running openfiler 2.3 fully updated. openfiler is winbind to AD and pulling users and groups over.
I have it confirmed working when a ftp users connects the username/password is authenticated against AD which works. User can login and is directed to the users folder on the nfs share.
Openfiler shows me UID and GID numbers for users and groups, centos also shows me UID and GID but they are different which is causing permissions/quota's to not work right.
Both servers are setup with krb and winbind, openfiler has a more recent version of winbind.
Here is an example...
AD Users are
user UID of 160010 as an example user1 UID 160011
When user logs into the vsftp server it works and chrooted into the directory for that user. When user uploads files I can upload but the UID in the ftp client shows 1600011 which is user1 UID
logging into windows to that share shows in the security tab that user1 uploaded the files.
Centos is mapping user as 160011 openfiler is mapping user as 160010 windows is showing the user1 in the security tab.
So it appears that centos is not mapping the right numbers to the right users and groups.
If you need details please ask for it and I will provide.
Both configs are nearly a match and I have made small changes to the config files smb.conf but it failed resolve these issues to work so I reverted back. kinit works with authentication, getent works, wbinfo -a and -u works. wbinfo -u user shows different results on both servers, but authentication works user/password and I tried a different password to test.
Is this a known bug or a silly misconfiguration? I had authentication GUI tool configure the winbind stuff so its all fairly standard on the centos machine and the openfiler gui configure winbind configs.
I am trying to build a e1000 network card driver rpm with particular requirement to have cpio.gz inside rpm.
But after i build my rpm driver it has cpio.lzma inside. I simply build using command from the readme: rpmbuild -tb *.tar.gz.
I have googled and found that from around 5.0 RHEL includes lzma and uses it as a default setting. Is there any way to force to use cpio.gz or somehow repackage my rpm correctly?
I have searched through makefile and other files but was not able to find a clue.
I am trying to copy my /home directory to a separate partition. I have seen a lot of info on this on the internet. Most of the information uses cpio to copy the files. The destination partition has been successfukky mounter.
I want to install Forms & Reports Developer Suite in Linux OS So I have downloaded Oracle Developer Suite 10g for Linux (Including Forms & Reports) as_linux_x86_ids_101202_disk1.cpio as_linux_x86_ids_101202_disk2.cpio
So in the Oracle Documentation Site they have given Guide as Follows: To extract the cpio file, move the cpio file to an empty directory, then do: cat filename.cpio | cpio -icd .... but its not extracting.
Below is the oneliner that I am using to exclude all of "." hidden directories within the same directory.
Code: cd find . -depth ( -wholename ./.* ) -prune -o -print | cpio -oav > /media/caca/extract/full$date.cpio it works fine but when I extract the files from the full$date.cpio archive it appears to have worked but gives me permission errors:
Code: cd /media/caca/extract cpio -ivd < full061411.cpio cpio: Selection_001.png: Cannot change mode to rw-r--r--: Operation not permitted Selection_001.png cpio: Selection_002.png: Cannot change mode to rw-r--r--: Operation not permitted Selection_002.png
But i would like to move to cpio, because with dd, if you add something new, you might need to change the count. Also cpio is used in distro's like Fedora and Ubuntu.
Im trying to build an initrd image for my livecd using cpio -o -H newc, but the livecd can't boot. If I create the initrd image using mkfs.ext2 then it works.
In the revision for the driver information it says it's for Ubuntu, but I assume it will work here as well.

When I do this the Make command is not correct for openSUSE
I'm running Red Hat Linux 5.4 on HP DL580 server with 16 processors and 64 GB of RAM. I'm connecting to the server remotely through SSH. after entering the password, it takes time to return the command line, if I click ctrl+c during this time, I'll have the command line prompt but not the correct bash prompt (I have to run bash to pass to my correct prompt).I tried to install Apache on the server, ./configure took 4 hours to finish instead of 1 or two minutes, Oracle installation same behavior. Server Disks are mirrored using RAID controller.
I'm not sure wether this is the correct forum for this, but this is the best place I can see at the moment, so I'll give it a try. Please redirect me if I'm mistaken.Running Suse 11.2, I have a RAID-5 device mounted, and a straigt disk. I want to copy data from the straigt disk to the array, using several methods: with Dolphin, with cpio. Copying runs for some time, sometimes one or some files are copied indeed, but after a short time (sometimes half a minute, sometimes 10 minutes or more) I get a

I am using Centos 5. I got one error unexpectedly after some configuration for rsync and folder settings. The error i am getting is "Serve Authorization directory (daemon/ServAuthDir) is set to /var/gdm but does not exist. Please correct the configuration and restart GDM." after rebooting.
I tried to resolve the issue by setting permission for folder /var/gdm to 755. but the problem is still not resolved.
