CentOS 5 :: Cannot Log In After Restoring With Mondo Rescue

Nov 3, 2010

I install CentOS 5.5 from DVD, set root password and log in as root. Then I install Mondo Rescue backup solution, make a backup and restore from it. After that, the system boots just like before, but I cannot log in. When I enter the right password, a couple of lines of text flicks briefly on a screen, too fast to read and the it returns to the initial password prompt. When I enter wrong password, it says "Login incorrect".What am I doing wrong?

I am sending a message to mondo-devel mailing list, but I suspect the root of the problem lies in CentOS, or something that I do wrong with it?I have installed both i386 and x86_64 versions of CentOS 5.5 from DVD's, the problem is the same.I'm running this on a separate machine that I have just for experiments with CentOS and virtualization. I install CentOS with defaults except I uncheck "Desktop - Gnome" and check "Virtualization". I can reinstall if needed.

CentOS 5 :: Mondo: Kernel Panic Upon Restore?

Feb 21, 2011

I created a CD image of my CentOS installation using mondo. When I booted from this CD and, in the restore process, selected an option to test the integrity of the image, it got to a certain point and said: Failure to execute /init. Kernel panic - not syncing: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel. The instructions say the kernel may need to be recompiled with certain options.Does anyone know if the CentOS kernel needs to be recompiled for use with mondo? If so, with exactly what options?I'm using CentOS 5.5. dmesg: Linux version 2.6.18-194.el5 (mockbuild@builder10.centos.org) (gcc version 4.1.2 20080704 (Red Hat4.1.2-48)) #1 SMP Fri Apr 2 14:58:14 EDT 2010.

Unfortunately I don't remember exactly what command I used to test the integrity of the mondo image, and http:[url]....the source of the instructions, is currently down.

CentOS 5 :: Restoring To New Hardware?

Jul 19, 2009

We are doing some disaster recovery exercises with CentOS 5. One of the things we want to do is be able to restore to our old production server. However, after restoring the partitions the boot loader starts and then does nothing other than displaying the location of the kernel image at the top of the screen.

If I use the installation CD to boot and chroot into the system everything appears to work fine. I am not sure why the system isn't working right.

CentOS 5 :: Restoring With Cpio - Command Correct?

Nov 12, 2009

The last time I did a restore using cpio under CentOS 3.9 it took a very long time for me to find my seemingly correct command wasn't working and I ended up doing the work in Knoppix. This time I thought I'd run my command by wiser heads before the necessary tape turns up and I spend a lot of time finding my command doesn't work. cpio -i -mtvV --block-size=128 --no-absolute-filenames /var/log/maillog* < /dev/st0

Does this look right? The backup string is find / -path /mnt -prune -o -path /lost+found -prune -o -path /sys -prune -o -path /proc -prune -o -path /swapfile1 -prune -o -path /var/named/chroot/proc -prune -o -print | cpio -o -H crc --block-size=128 > /dev/st0

EDIT: I changed the restore string to cpio -i -mtvV --block-size=128 --no-absolute-filenames *var/log/maillog* < /dev/st0 EDIT2: Whoops, should be cpio -i -mvV --block-size=128 --no-absolute-filenames *var/log/maillog* < /dev/st0

I have been unable to find the file /etc/apt/preferences in my system using file search or the Synaptic Manager. When I tried to create a file with this name the Synaptic Manager got up set.

CentOS 5 :: Boot Into Rescue Mode Using Live CD

Oct 16, 2010

I am attempting to work with adding a new hard drive with a default logical volume setup. In order to complete the task, I am instructed to use a live CD to boot the system without mounting the drives using linux rescue. I am using CentOS-5.5-i386-LiveCD-Release2.iso

I have reviewed the centos documentation. When the live CD boots, it starts a count down to an automatic boot. I attempt to invoke the boot options as directed by hitting the tab and adding the words

linux rescue

At the end of the line and hit return to begin the booting process.

Unfortunately, the linux rescue boot option is ignored and the system mounts the hard drive. Additionally, I have checked the boot option several times by hitting the tab a second time and the option is not displayed.

In researching the issue, I inevitably get very similar instructions like:

Quote:The first centos CD or DVD has a rescue mode, just type on the boot screen: linux rescue

CentOS 5 Hardware :: NIC Works In Rescue Mode But Not For Install

If I boot the same disk with 'linux askmethod' and select http as the install method, it tries to start eth0, then times out trying to get dhcp. Checking tty3 (or 4, i forget) indicates the eth0 link is up, but no communication. Manual configuration doesn't work either.

CentOS 5 :: Manually Mounting Partitions In "rescue Mode"?

Aug 2, 2010

give me the sequence for manually mounting devices in "rescue mode" ? When I try "linux rescue" from the install disk, it eventually fails to mount my partitions with a generalized failure message, which tells me nothing. I then try mounting them myself on /mnt/sysimage. I have separate root, boot, and home partititions. Is the sequence:

Mount root partition at /mnt/sysimage
chroot /mnt/sysimage
Mount boot partition at /boot
Mount home partition at /home

What about tmpfs, devpts, sysfs ? Do they need to be manually mounted also ? The 'mount' command does not show them as mounted after I do my chroot.

Slackware :: Restoring Whole System From A Tar.gz?

Mar 8, 2011

I save my whole system to a .tar.gz file weekly except for the /proc content. I have used this backup a few times to restore my system without issue.

Last time I restored, I discovered the following 2 issues I home somebody can explain:

#1: while extracting the .tar.gz using tar xzvf filename.tar.gz, I get the following error near the end of the restore process "tar: Incorrect Length". This error only occurs when I boot the system with the slackware 12.1 disc 1 CD. It does not occur if I try to restore from my working system, same file. Other than this, everything seems to be restored properly and the system boots up properly. I am just concerned by the meaning of this error.

#2: After restore, I do lilo -C /mnt/etc/lilo.conf to make sure the systems boots up properly. This works... however, I have discovered that just this won't make module autoloading work after the restore. When booting the restored system, no module autoload !

I have correct this by just entering setup when booted up using the slackware 12.1 disk 1 CD and going thru addswap, set target without format and the going thru the configuration menu and cancelling all question.

Why would modules not load automatically ?

all my test restores in vbox worked fine. i may use the backup as a second OS, so it works. but there i first deleted the old OS and than ran cp -a /media/backup_partition /media/restore_parititon.

yesterday i ran into trouble and had to restore my system.
mount /dev/sda1 /media/restore
mount /dev/sdb1 /media/backup
rsync -auv /media/backup/ /media/restore

that did work, but not so good. dpkg-errors, all non-repo-apps, like opera and some old thrash, were a mess. i had to reinstall them with dpkg to delete them. besides that the system is up and running, but it was a lot of work.

Fedora :: Failing HD And Restore Not Restoring

Dec 20, 2010

The HD containing my main F14 install is suddenly failing with many unreadable blocks. So I booted a different F14 installation I have on another disk.

Then I run dump, for example, as following:

Code:
dump -0 -a -q -v -A sdb1_home.arc -f sdb1_home.dmp -L F14_sdb1_home /dev/sdb1

as, for what I can recall, I've often done to create full backups.

The problem is that running restore with this command:

Code:
restore -i -A sdb1_home.arc -f sdb1_home.dmp

(as, for whatI can...) and using the add and extract commands, only the directory are created. But files are listed using ls. If I add just a file, only dirname is extracted.

I wanted to test out restoring the database, so on my test server I deleted the database and restored the .sql file to a new schema with the same name as the old. one. It appears to complete the process just fine. But I noticed that the number of rows for the restored database is slightly less than what was backed up.

Is this normal or should the numbers be exactly the same? It's only a difference of about 28 rows. I seem to be able to view the data just fine in the query tool.
