I upgraded my OS from 5.2 to 5.3 through the system built-in updater. Then I found that I lost correct SCIM support for some applications. I was able to type Chinese and Japanese into aMSN and Skype when it was CentOS 5.2. But I can no longer do that now. Typing into some other applications still works. These applications include sylpheed, firefox, and open office....
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm running CentOS 5.3 x86_64 on my laptop (dell vostro 1400, core2duo, 3GB RAM, intel 3945ABG wireless, nvidia video and LAN). The problem is that some times (like 15-20% of times) I shutdown the laptop, I get a kernel panic related always to the wireless kernel module (I haven't been able to get screenshot or anything). I'm using the latest centosplus kernel. I never get these panics with the standard CentOS kernel, however the standard kernel doesn't light the wireless led, and that annoys me a lot. Therefore I'm forced to use centosplus kernel. The question is not how to solve this (i know I've not given enough details) but what to do to diagnose better the cause of the panic and then correct it.

I have a server running VMWare Server on it with 4 virtual machines running. I am trying to use NTPD to keep the time correct on all of the virtual machines. On my physical server, I have installed ntpd and this is it's config file:

What I really want to do is compile an apache version that uses the same layout as the version included with CentOS. I can not however find the correct layout.conf file. The one from the Apache Source doesn't have a REHL or CentOS option.

this is a plesk/centos server that is pretty much out of the box.
Problem I have is that all the domain names I add to Plesk, are all pulling files from /var/www/html . All 5 domains Ive added each got their own /var/www/vhosts/domain.com/* folders created ...
Is there something I am missing in order to have the server grab files from each domains respective folder?
What I noticed was that if I edit /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf and add the virtualhost lines to it, then the one domain name resolves properly.
i replaced my domain with 'mydomain.com'

View 3 Replies View RelatedCentos 5.4 64bit fully updated. What I am doing is vsftpd is setup and nfs shares are mounted to a NAS server which is running openfiler 2.3 fully updated. openfiler is winbind to AD and pulling users and groups over.
I have it confirmed working when a ftp users connects the username/password is authenticated against AD which works. User can login and is directed to the users folder on the nfs share.
Openfiler shows me UID and GID numbers for users and groups, centos also shows me UID and GID but they are different which is causing permissions/quota's to not work right.
Both servers are setup with krb and winbind, openfiler has a more recent version of winbind.
Here is an example...
AD Users are
user UID of 160010 as an example
user1 UID 160011
When user logs into the vsftp server it works and chrooted into the directory for that user. When user uploads files I can upload but the UID in the ftp client shows 1600011 which is user1 UID
logging into windows to that share shows in the security tab that user1 uploaded the files.
Centos is mapping user as 160011
openfiler is mapping user as 160010
windows is showing the user1 in the security tab.
So it appears that centos is not mapping the right numbers to the right users and groups.
If you need details please ask for it and I will provide.
Both configs are nearly a match and I have made small changes to the config files smb.conf but it failed resolve these issues to work so I reverted back. kinit works with authentication, getent works, wbinfo -a and -u works. wbinfo -u user shows different results on both servers, but authentication works user/password and I tried a different password to test.
Is this a known bug or a silly misconfiguration? I had authentication GUI tool configure the winbind stuff so its all fairly standard on the centos machine and the openfiler gui configure winbind configs.

Either way it's pretty annoying. The way opensuse handles repositories is different than Ubuntu's, so somehow I ended up creating duplicates too. So basically, I want to remove any duplicates and also stop receiving the daily KDE updates.You can ignore the google repositories. My repositories

Although having used Ubuntu for a good couple of years, I'm still a total beginner when it comes to scripting. However, what I need to do should be fairly straightforward:
Importing images from my digital camera, both RAW "originals" and JPG "copies" end up in the same folder. I typically flip through the JPG:s in Image Viewer and remove those that I'm not interested in. Now, this leaves me with the tedious job of going though all the RAW files in the folder manually to get rid of those too! It sure would be wonderful to get Ubuntu to do the work for me...
The script would simply need to go though all the RAW files in a folder one by one, check for a corresponding JPG file - and if there isn't one, remove the RAW file. How could I accomplish that?

View 6 Replies View RelatedWhat is the correct/safe way to move from upstart to systemd? I originally installed upstart in 11.3 and have now upgraded to 11.4. Having successfully upgraded to 11.4 I tried to use yast2 to install systemd and systemd-sysvinit onto my running system. Yast correctly identified that upstart should be deinstalled as a prerequisite for installing systemd-sysvinit.
After the install of systemd the system wouldn't shut down, and on a reset the system reported many systemctl/start service timeouts on things such as mounts and ttys. Eventually the system started an X-windows KDM login, but there were no console ttys and mounts were missing. I used X/kdm to login to root - phew! - I restored / from an rsync backup I'd made prior to the changes, so I'm back in business with upstart. I'd like to tidy up and move to systemd - I going to have a nose around myself, perhaps I will try switching back to sysv init and then going to systemd - but I have to wait for the machine to be idle before I experiment, any info in the mean time would be great.
I am using Centos 5. I got one error unexpectedly after some configuration for rsync and folder settings. The error i am getting is "Serve Authorization directory (daemon/ServAuthDir) is set to /var/gdm but does not exist. Please correct the configuration and restart GDM." after rebooting.
I tried to resolve the issue by setting permission for folder /var/gdm to 755. but the problem is still not resolved.
I'm having issues setting up rsyslog to receive syslog from another server and only log to one file. I'm receiving the syslog from the remote side, however its putting the entries into more than one log file.
I configured /etc/rsyslog.conf to enable udp, and I have implemented a filter to log only from that IP address, and then stop processing more rules, but it seems to continue on.
I have found that the remote syslog events are using local0 and local1. There are two custom rsyslog config files in /etc/rsyslog.d that handle those two facilities. If I use that same if statement at the beginning of those custom config files, I can get it to work. Seems like a hack though.

I am hoping someone already has a script or knows of an app that will let me do this fairly easily - I have a fairly large folder structure that goes several levels deep, etc. In many cases there are duplicate file names that are not really different, e.g.,
/home/chris/folder/folder1/doc1.doc
/home/chris/folder/folder2/folder3/doc1.doc
I want to recursively go through /home/chris/folder and move everything to /home/chris/another_location/ without subfolders and renaming duplicates as appropriate, e.g.,
/home/chris/another_location/doc1.doc
/home/chris/another_location/doc1_1.doc
I have tried a combination of the following lines in .bashrc to try and control duplicates in the bash history file:

I've tried using a script to run incremental backups. The idea was to use the update switch to just update the files in the .tar instead of creating new ones. However it seems to have created duplicate files in the tar instead of just updating them (refer to screenshot). Is this normal?

Are those file duplicates, or are they just hard-linked, ie. there's really only one file in the flash memory but it looks like there are more than one? How can make sure?
I have about 1TB of data to sort out and need a good GUI package to find and safely delete the duplicate files. I am running Ubuntu 10.04 amd_64. Would appriciate any thoughts on how to get it done.

I used the zypper dup tool to upgrade my HP Pavilion dv6000 laptop and my display is now broken into columns and partially obscured. I can barely see anything on it. When I ran zypper it stopped about half way and locked up.I then ran it again to completion. At boot, GRUB gives me my startup options as before and is clearly readable with good resolution. When I select openSuse to start it, the screen goes blank for a few seconds and then comes back with the screen problems.
The problem continues all the way into KDE. I have approximately four columns displayed but I can barely see anything. Most of the lower half of what should be displayed is obscured so I cannot load any applications. If I right click, I can make out the dialog box and select the run command. From there I reran the zypper command using the 'zypper up rpm' option and it says "nothing to do" and the "highest update version is already installed."
The display problem also exists if I use the failsafe boot option. I remember having to download nVidia driver last year to get a better resolution, but 11.2 (64 bit) worked great until the repositories stopped working and I no longer was able to load software. Now I can't use the computer to download and burn a DVD version of 11.4. Again, I do seem to be able to use the terminal, so I could presumably fix something with it if I had the right commands and I do seem to have access to the repositories.
