CentOS 5 :: Make PC Speaker/Beep Work?
Jan 17, 2010
My server is headless, so I'd like to make it beep when it finishes booting. Some posts in the forum seem to indicate this is the default setting, but my box has no sound when login prompt appears. The speaker does work since it beeps once at the start of the booting process (probably BIOS' doing). "lsmod | grep pcspkr" shows "pcspkr 7105 0", lspci shows nothing related to speaker.
Also I'd like to know how I can test the speaker from command line (remote ssh terminal), will echo -e "007" work?

I live in a crowded area so I have to use headphones almost all of the time. I just leave them plugged in so when an alarm goes off from Thunderbird or Evolution, I can't hear it. Is there a way to get some use out of my internal system speaker and have a reliable calendar-event-reminder and alarm? I'm talking about the one that will beep from inside the computer even if you have headphones plugged in.

This may seem like a stupid question (if not completely ridiculous ), but I was wondering if there's a way to configure audio events so that I can use a wav/ogg sound instead of the PC speaker's default beep for small events like hitting backspace in a text editor when it's the beginning of the document (or any other illegal keyboard action), or in Wine applications when it calls for an "asterisk" sound (it just beeps the PC speaker).
I've looked at similar threads, but they mainly just talk about either the beeps that the machine does when it boots up, or simply turning off the beeping completely. What I want to do is substitute the beeps (that are caused by the OS) for an actual sound that's played through the ALSA/OSS/whatever audio device.

i'm running Ubuntu 10.04 server and want to turn on the pc-speaker warning-beep.I commented out the line in /etc/modprobe.d blacklist.conf:
#blacklist pcspkr
The beep is now working for root. But somehow it won't work if i log in as a normal user. (i don't know why, but if i install beep the beep-command works for all users...unfortunately beep seems not to make a warning sound in all cases so this is no solution for me)

I've got a laptop running OpenSuse 11.1/KDE 4.2. I've got sound working just fine (can play music, etc), but whenever there's a system alert (like when I get a new email in Thunderbird), I hear a loud BEEP, as if it's coming from the PC speaker.

I've been using my girlfriend's Mackbook Pro and really like the beep sound when pressing backspace at a command prompt and really would like to have it on my ubuntu. However, I've checked "Terminal bell" option in the profile settings, but there is still no beep sound. What am I missing here?

My beep command stopped working -- it does not beep. I think this happened when I upgraded to Karmic (but could have been earlier). I use the beep command to notify me of important events.
I tried looking in sound settings, and did not find anything suspicious. I also tried googling but most stuff just describes how to "disable the annoying beep". Lastly, I tried different software channels and repositories to find an alternative program to the beep command, but nothing happened.

Curses's 'beep' errors. I loaded pcspkr.ko but couldn't get a sound out of my speaker. I tried sending a KDMKTONE via ioctl to /dev/tty0, which returns success but still makes no sound. I have all mixer parameters set to 100%. I can make sound with mplayer, sox, etc. Mr Vojtech Pavlik recommended I try evdev, which I built and loaded. It creates an event for pcspkr in /dev/input. How do I use that to make a sound on my speaker?

I have a problem which is a great inconvenience to me. I want to say that I've been searching for the answer for a week and couldn't find anything but problems similar to mine which were unresolved.I used to have debian lenny, but one day i decided to reinstall my operating system and upgraded to sid, so I have a fresh install of debian sid with gnome.
The system beep no longer works on gnome.
What I mean, when i move to terminal(like ctrl+alt+f1) it works great, it also works when i type 'beep' in gnome-terminal. but it doesnt make a sound when i e.g. press ctrl+G, when i am being called on irssi, when i press backspace in gnome-terminal. These things used to work in Lenny, and I really need them (especially this hiliting in irssi). I would go back to Lenny if i didnt need some software that is not present for that version of debian. The pcspkr module is loaded

My laptop beeps three times during the resume from hibernation. How can I disable this beeping. I use CentOS 5.3. Interestingly, this issue did not occur when I used CentOS 5.2 on the same laptop last year.

I am having trouble getting my internal speaker to work on openSuSE 11.2. These are the symptoms and my experiences to date. When I boot my machine the internal speaker emits a beep. On my other machines, I get a similar sound when I press Escape in vi (in command mode). It is this beep from the internal speaker that I am having trouble with. Looking around on the web I see that it is reported that the module snd-hda-intel can interfere with the internal speaker. When I unload this module using rmmod, I do get the beep from the internal speaker. When I reload it, the beep does not sound. Some of the reports seem to attribute the problem to a configuration option for the sound module called "digital beep" that needs to be enabled.
Using "make -C O=`pwd` cloneconfig" on my kernel sources, I see that the option CONFIG_SND_HDA_INPUT_BEEP is set to y. Also affected are things like printf ( "a" ) and sending Control-G to "cat" or "cat > /dev/console". what do I need to do get the internal speaker to sound while at the same time retaining the full capabilities of the sound system?

I have bought a laptop 2 months ago with pre installed windows7 and installed Ubuntu 10.04 64bit but still didnt get sound from the speakers. With headphones everything is OK . I have unmuted everything and searched forums but nothing so far. In windows I get speaker sound so it is not hardware problem. In alsamixer it appears I have 2 soundcards, one HDA -intel (chip Realtek ALC272) and a second one HDA nvidia ( a virtual one propably from my nvidia VGA ) that lacks controls . With lspci -v , it appears both use the same driver :Kernel driver in use: HDA IKernel modules: snd-hda-intel . Tried to disable the first one from bios but it didnt help I also tried sound adjustment in preferences -> sound and gnome-alsamixer, nothing. From gnome alsamixer, when I mute speakers, the headphones also get mute so may be the system doesnt recognize speakers and headphones separately? May be it has to do with config files but my linux knowledge is low.

I have got a Creative X-fi gamer card. I have Creative 4.1 speakers. One of the front speaker doesn't work and I use one front and two rear and of course one subwoofer.
In Gnome, it works after I do few commands and all is well. But, in any other desktop environment only the front one speaker works and the rear two don't. Neither in KDE nor in XFCE or LXDE.
I am tearing my hairs on this. And it is indeed the same with other distributions.
Is it because now it has become actually 3.1 and channelling is not happening. But in Gnome they work.

originally my sounds worked completely, but now I only have sound out of the headphone jack. I used all the OEM software originally, but ended up following this step-by-step guide to run all pulse audio. After installing that I noticed that the sound keys on my laptop still showed that they changed the volume, but didn't have any effect in PulseAudio Volume Control... fixed that by changing the keyboard layout. While that bugged me the sound still came out of my speakers and headphone jack, but just recently the speakers randomly stopped working. Has anyone else experienced this?Computer:Lenovo 3000 N100 0768-4JUWindows 7, and Ubuntu 9.04*Edit- I tried to make it in one post, but it would not allow me yet saying I tried to post a link.

I'm running slack64 13.1, I don't have KDE installed or any of the KDE libraries (so answers concerning KMix aren't going to help), I'm using xfce4 as the desktop environment. Anyway I just bought a new 4.1 surround sound speaker system from Amadeus and wanted to give it a shot. Obviously my first instinct was to plug them in and give it a whack... much to no one's surprise this didn't work. So I googled my ass off, and it seems for every person that has had a surround sound system, there's a different solution for them. I tried a couple tutorials to end at the same disappointing conclusion: the front two speakers and the subwoofer work. So here's the current situation:
The front two speakers are plugged into the speaker-out port (the green one) and the rear-two speakers are plugged into the line-out port (the light blue one). Since the subwoofer works I'm going to assume it uses the the same line that the front two speakers do. I've turned all the lines all the way up in alsamixer, and made sure it's playing on 4 channel. I reran alsaconf just to make sure and it configured snd-intel8x0 for me with no complaints. I also added a .asoundrc file that looks like this:
[Code]...
Then I ran "speaker-test -c 4 -D surround41 -t wav". Again only the front two speakers play any sound. I'm kinda new to configuring sound, as I've never before had a problem.

I don't get any sound from my left speaker. With my headphones plugged in though I get sound in both speakers. I've upgraded my Kernel to .36. I'm using Ubuntu 10.10. I'm on an MSI A7200 which is a great laptop but apparently a very rare one. There's like no info on it at all on the internet.

I am running a quad core centos 5.4 box that is having a strange problem with dovecot. The administration panel is able to send emails through dovecot but not any of the user accounts (ie with webmail). I've done a bit of research with what could be wrong but haven't had any luck so far I am also having a weird problem with apache: on a c++/php bittorrent application I was going to be running on a subdomain of my main site I get a 500 error every time I try to log in. The only way to get rid of the 500 error is to clear the chache (so its horribly broken somehow). The error generated in the log whenever I try to log in is that "ffmpeg is already loaded" (which I am running on the main site and is critical). Is there a way of either repairing my apache install or excluding ffmpeg on the subdomain in the conf or something?

I'm having trouble getting compiz to work on my Laptop. It worked for a while and then I turned on Shift Switcher and a message popped up saying..."The new value for the button binding for the action Terminate in plugin Shift Switcher conflicts with the action Zoom Window of the Scale Addons plugin. Do you wish to disable Zoom Window in the Scale Addons plugin?" I was given the option of Set Terminate anyway, Don't set Terminate, and Disable Zoom Window. I clicked Don't set Terminate and ever since the only thing that works in compiz are the bindings in the general options. I've used synaptic to completely remove and then reinstall compiz but the problem persist. Something else weird, all of the changes I made are still there, even after complete removal, but they don't work?

I just recently (about an hour ago) installed Ubuntu Netbook edition on my old laptop, and I was greeted with the message, that unity could not be run due to some sort of missing driver...fair enough, I was then greeted with the default Ubuntu desktop, I installed all my needed software (wine, google chrome) and installed the missing display drivers. I then rebooted the system, and once again I am stuck with the default desktop, and not the Unity interface. I checked the software center, and it says Unity IS in fact installed.. And yet I cannot make it appear. So now I ask you Ubuntu veterans. How do I make it work?
P.S. I wiped the system of windows, and the computer is an old HP Pavilion DV6000
