CentOS 5 :: MD Raid Lost On 2 Servers / Get That Back?

Nov 2, 2010

I have a problem with a few up-to-date installations of CentOS 5.5. I have lost all md (software raid) devices on them some point in the past. They were working ok.

Now the 2 disks are seen as two separate disks, with no link between them.

# cat /proc/mdstat
Personalities :
unused devices: <none>

Ubuntu Servers :: Lost Partiontable On RAID 1 Array?

Jun 4, 2010

I just restarted my server (Ubuntu 9.04 server, running on ESXi 4.0) and while copying files onto the server using samba I got strange problems and the connection was lost. When I rebooted the total system, so ESXi as well as Ubuntu Server I did find problems on my RAID disk.

The directory, where the new files were added I have a lot of files, but a lot of them do not have any info except their name:

1304 -rw-rw-rw- 1 spoorhobby spoorhobby 1327274 2010-05-15 22:10 DSCF1895.JPG
? -????????? ? ? ? ? ? DSCF1896.JPG
? -????????? ? ? ? ? ? DSCF1897.JPG
? -????????? ? ? ? ? ? DSCF1898.JPG

[Code].....

Both mirror disks are still functioning and I can still add/delete files, from the server, from other LINUX systems and from other Windows systems via samba.

I did make a full backup on a different server.

CentOS 5 :: IP Configuration Lost After Reboot / Get That Back?

Sep 16, 2009

Google brought me no love on this one, tried searching here with little luck as well. So I'm hoping somebody vastly more experienced than I can shed some light on my plight.

The situation:
I have a CentOS 5.3 x64 server running the latest cPanel which works fantastic. I issued a graceful reboot and the server came back up (according to the DC) just fine to a login prompt. Apparently the system lost all of its IP address configuration. Primary IP, secondary IP's gateway, you name it and it was gone. Now my secondary IP's were showing in cPanel after I had the DC re-enter my main IP address/gateway. But listed as not active due to the fact that they were not anywhere to be attached to the interface. i.e. eth0:1 eth0:2 etc and so on.

I have no idea where to begin looking for this problem and am afraid to reboot it again (at least until I get my lantronix spider up there). I've never experienced this with any of my other CentOS/cPanel servers either. All similar configurations CentOS 5.3 x64, latest cPanel as well. My hardware is all Supermicro gear as well and has been solid in the past.

Maybe I'm just missing something, granted I've only been managing Linux based servers for about two years now. This is actually the first real problem I've ran into on any Linux distro, they are normally pretty solid. So I assume it's a configuration error on my part somewhere.

Ubuntu Servers :: RAID-5 Recovery (spare/active) / Degraded And Can't Create Raid ,auto Stop Raid [md1]?

Feb 1, 2011

Could any RAID gurus kindly assist me on the following RAID-5 issue?I have an mdadm-created RAID5 array consisting of 4 discs. One of the discs was dropping out, so I decided to replace it. Somehow, this went terribly wrong and I succeeded in marking two of the drives as faulty, and the re-adding them as spare.

Now the array is (logically) no longer able to start:

mdadm: Not enough devices to start the array.Degraded and can't create RAID ,auto stop RAID [md1]

I was able to examine the disks though:

Code:
root@127.0.0.1:/etc# mdadm --examine /dev/sdb2
/dev/sdb2:
Magic : a92b4efc
Version : 00.90.00
code....

Code:
mdadm --create --assume-clean --level=5 --raid-devices=4 /dev/sda2 /dev/sdb2 /dev/sdc2 /dev/sdd2
As I don't want to ruin the maybe small chance I have left to rescue my data, I would like to hear the input of this wise community.

Ubuntu :: "reconnect" To The RAID Array Even If The "mothersystem" Of The Software RAID Is Lost?

Oct 19, 2010

Consider the following setup: Ubuntu system installed on a separate SSD for speed. An ubuntu software RAID array consisting of X number of physical HDD's for storage (RAID6 or RAID10). RAID setup is done during system install. If I suffer a total crash of the SSD and loose my system, will I be able to, using a new system disk, "reconnect" to the RAID array even if the "mothersystem" of the software RAID is lost? If yes, are there any particular config- or system files I need to backup to be able to rescue the array or will it just be recognized "out-of-the-box" when reinstalling ubuntu?

CentOS 5 Hardware :: Connect A RAID Box To The Server Via LSI 8880EM2 RAID Controller

Aug 3, 2010

I am trying to connect a RAID Box to the server via LSI 8880EM2 RAID controller. The raid box is FUjitsu Externus DX60 with raid 1 configured. The server is Fujitsu Primergy SX300 S5 with LSI 8880EM2 RAID card. The external raid box is being recognised by the raid controllers bios.

The server runs CentOS 5.5 64bit. I have installed the megaraid_sas driver from LSI website and MegaCLI utility but CentOS still fails to see the box.MegaCLI utility, when launched from CentOS, recognises the raid box, CentOS does not(no mapping being created in /dev).

I have also tried to create a logical RAID0 HDD on one physical HDD(as seen by MegaCLI) with MegaCLI utility in CentOS.The result was success and the new logical drive could have been used, but when restarting the server, the controllers' bios fails with an error (not surprised(one logical RAID0 on one physical HDD)) and configuration is being erased.

Has anyone tried connecting 8880EM2 controller to a raid box with raid configured on the box, running it all under CentOS and what were the results.

Ubuntu :: How To Get A RAID-1 Back

May 27, 2010

I had a working RAID-1 (software raid) under 9.10 and the update to 10.04 failed totally. Now I did a new installation of 9.10 and wanted to have my RAID-1 back ... but how can that be done ?

The first partition has the ID "83", the second one "fd". I was able to create a degraded RAID and was able to get a backup from the "83" disc - but whatever I do with the second disc: its busy and nothing can be done with that.

My question: how can I build the original RAID-1 from these two discs using mdadm ? Actually I've read the documentation, but the documentation also says, that both partitions should have the "fd" ID.

CentOS 5 Hardware :: RAID Or Non-raid HBA Recommendation?

Dec 10, 2009

I am going to be using CentOs 5.4 for a home storage server. It will be RAID6 on 6 x 1TB drives. I plan on using an external enclosure which is connected via two SFF-8088 cables (4 drives a piece). I am looking to try and find a non-RAID HBA which would support this external enclosure and allow to use standard linux software raid.

If this is not an option, I'd consider using a hardware based raid card, but they are very expensive. The Adaptec 5085 is one option but is almost $800. If that is what I need for this thing to be solid then that is fine, I will spend the money but I am thinking that software raid may be the way to go.

Ubuntu :: Lost GUI After Running Grub / Get It Back?

Feb 5, 2011

Login in problems:
I was trying to fix the brightness on my toshiba T130 Satellite laptop and found these instruction [Note: I did not try XRANDR option]
If backlight control doesn't work with the 'XRANDR' option above, use this code...

Safe the file, run 'sudo update-grub' and reboot.

Credits: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...id/+bug/392948[/INDENT]http://www.linlap.com/wiki/toshiba+satellite+t130
However after running these instructions and rebooting my laptop I lost the GUI, and do not know how to get it back.
If it helps the loader screen with the 4 dots has gone slightly skewed, and I've downloaded the most recent update changes.

I can get GUI through recovery mode and running it in failsafex, but I don't think this is a good solution.

Ubuntu :: NTFS Partition Lost / Get That Back?

Feb 26, 2011

I'm using Windows 7 and Ubuntu in two differents partitions in my hard drive. I was on Windows 7 and decided to reboot. When the grub screen should have appeared, instead the computer rebooted itself. It continues to do so. I put Ubuntu 10.10 Live CD and it keeps "loading" forever, but doesn't hang. In the console, it said something like "input/output" error. I tried with my Win 7 DVD and it was the same: it doesn't reach the part where it shows the menu with all the installation options.

I tried with Gparted and it loaded fine. It showed all my partitions, but there wasn't (I think) more that I could have done with it. I tried then user Super Grub Boot. I finally could enter Ubuntu. Everything is fine except that it doesn't show my Window partition. It's like it doesn't exist anymore, so I can't backup my files. Now, I haven't tried loading Win 7 from Super Grub Boot (I'm going to do it just as soon as I post this), but this is pretty weird. Anyone have any idea what is going on and what can I do to this this?

I had everything backed up so it is no great disaster, but drop box lost a lot of my files. Some of the folders with missing files now have thumbs.db in them, but when you go to the dropbox site, you don't even see that.

I had thought about using dropbox as my main backup solution. That would be a big mistake.

I was messing around with the "Login Screen" utility and changed the session choice to "User defined session" (or something similar). I thought this would allow me to pick the session to use (Unity, Gnome) but that was wrong. So right now, when I login, I have a blank screen with no menu bars. If someone could give me the commandline command to run the "Login Screen", I should be able to switch it back.
