Jun 15, 2010I've got 2 hard disk drives of 250GB, with this partitions :
All partitions are with format "linux raid software". I made 3 raid1 with them like that :
I want to clone them to news hdd of 500Gb, to have this partitions :
My problem, how can I resize partitions, before resize the array md2 with the command mdadm --grow /dev/md1 --size=max ?
After, how can I rebuild /dev/md2 without lost any datas ?
I'm using ubuntu-server 10.04 64bits.
OpenSUSE Install :: Lost Partition Table All The Time?
Mar 25, 2010As soon as I install and reboot OpenSUSE, my partition table gets lost somehow. Here is some information about my system:
Dual-booting system with Vista and OpenSUSE 2 SATA hard drives combined into one with Vista installed on them. 1 IDE hard drive with OpenSUSE installed on it.
When I install OpenSUSE, it loads fine right after the installation. Then, when I reboot the computer and select to load OpenSUSE from the Grub loader menu, it hangs right after:
root(hd4,1)
Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31.5-0.1-desktop root=/dev/disk/by-id/ata-IC35l....... and so on
I tried running System Repair off of a DVD and automated test - it tells me that the partition table is lost. I choose to recover partition table and after a while it does but I am still unable to boot.
Ubuntu Servers :: Separate Non Raid Boot Partition?
Aug 9, 2011I have been working in my spare time over the last few days, Had problems with the whole grub2 not installing on RAID 1. Then I found out that I had to have a separate non raid Ext4 partition on one drive with "/Boot" as mount point and install went though fine.
My question is, will the developers FIX this. I mean if I only have 2 x 2tb drives in teh pc as RAID 1, and the one fails with the boot partition the whole machine goes down. Kinda defeats the whole RAID feature huh.
I USED to run a windows network with RAID 5 servers, and windows never had a problem installing everything on the RAID. Or even setting up RAID 1 in the bios on the PC and installing XP or NT4 on the RAID 1. There was never a need for a separate non raid boot partition.
Do we need a separate RAID friendly/enabled Grub? I guess for now I will get a 250gb drive and install the Server OS to it, and setup RAID1 manually after the server OS boots. Then will make a ghost type image of the server in case that drive fails so I can quickly install a new drive and restore the image and get it back up and running again.
Fedora Installation :: Lost Ability To Boot Into Ubuntu On Another Partition
Nov 10, 2010I wanted to experiment with Fedora 14.
The machine has Windows XP and Ubuntu 9.10.
Before today when I turned the machine on there was a black screen with many Linux kernels to choose from and Windows.
I created another for Fedora and installed it on there - the Ubuntu root partition is still there.
When I boot now, there is a blue Fedora screen with just it and Windows.
To make matters worse Fedora doesn't work with my graphics card (Matrox). I would like to get Fedora working but still want to have the ability to use Ubuntu again.
What do I need to change to be able to boot into Ubuntu again and how do I do it?
Ubuntu Installation :: Lost Boot Partition On Drive Failure
Jan 1, 2011We had a drive failure on /dev/sda. Everything 'except' boot was on raid5 across sda, sdb, sdc, sdd. I know how to repartition a new drive and rebuild the raid etc, but I don't know how to regenerate the files that reside on the boot partition. I really don't want to re-install as we have lot of custom code and software that may depend on our current libraries and build environment.

Fedora :: Finding Lost /boot Partition On F12 X86_64
Dec 8, 2009During attempted repair of damaged USB stick with fdisk and parted, an error appears to have changed the partition holding the /boot partition. At one point I possibly typed sda1 instead of sdb1 and appear to have lost my /boot partition.
This is on a HP Compaq Presario CQ50 228CA Portable running only Fedora (No multiboot).
I am able to reach most of the programs and data on the machine with the rescue mode from the F12 x86_64 DVD, chroot /mnt/sysimage command - so the main part of the system is still available. But when the machine starts up all I get is the 'grub:' prompt. In rescue mode I can cd /boot but there is nothing to list, and certainly there is no /boot/grub. fdisk /dev/sda1 p reports 255 heads 63 sectors/tracks 25 Cylinders Units=cylinders of 16065 x 512 = 8225280 Bytes Disk Identifier 0x0000000 - and then nothing under the headings Device, Boot, Start End etc...
Previously /boot was on /dev/sda1 a 194 m patition, with 39m used and 146m available (according to logwatch mail),
My questions:
Are there any commands in the grub program that would help my recovery - I doubt it, because grub is in place and running but I am not sure. Could I using fdisk recover the sda1 partition and it's contents? If so - how? If no, could I use the F12x86_64 to update and hence recover the /boot drive and retain the the LVM volumes both programs and content? If no, is my only option to reload F12 from the start, then rsync in my backup /home directory?
Since there had been a fair amount of customization done on the previous F11 which had been preupgraded to F12 I would prefer any option that would retain the customizations ...
OpenSUSE Install :: Lost Boot Of Main Partition?
Apr 8, 2011Ive been running crunchbang on my system, and yesterday decided to try opensuse so i can install the novell client. I ran the live gnome cd and during installation I shrank my main partition down and created a new partition for opensuse. Installation went well other than sometimes programs close and make the part of my desktop that they occupied useless.
Question 1) I can see my crunch bang files through opensuse but i cannot find or boot into crunch bang.
question 2) Why are these programs closing and then killing my desktop? Say i have a Firefox in the top left of my desktop and it errors and closes. I go open Firefox again, anywhere that the old Firefox window was in ( not click able). My cursor will turn to the text cursor as soon as it enters the x y position. I have to restart the laptop to be able to click file or insert a web address.
Software :: Possible To Boot From Hard Disk Having RAID Partition?
Mar 28, 2010I wanted to implement raid5 such that one partition is from my laptop's hard disk and others from other hard disks. After making one partition a raid partition, I rebooted the system. The computer stopped mid-way during booting, and brought me to the shell. On typing fsck -p, it told me an unexpected error occured in the partition which I had made for raid. Is there some condition that we cannot boot from a disk containing one of the raid partitions ?

I have a total of 3 HDDs on this system:
-- 2x 500GB WDD HDDs (non-advanced format) ... RAID-0 setup

(The non RAID HDD is intended to be a SWAP drive for both XP and Ubuntu = 2 partitions)
I plan on making multiple partitions... and reserve partition space for Ubuntu (of course).
I have the latest version of the LiveCD created already.
Q4) Do I need the Alternate CD for this setup?
I plan on installing XP before Ubuntu.
This is my 1st time dual booting XP with Ubuntu.

Mar 4, 2010I'm using Fedora 12 since 2 years lately, I really enjoy this S.O., it's quite robust and wonderful, but a couple of months ago it is really slow to boot up when startup the computer, I've checked everything, but seems to be ok, I had a partition lost arround that date, but recover successfully, it happens when I run gparted that It cannot see partition on my 500 GB disk, but still boots up. When running Mandriva live cd, it can see (?) all partitions on that disk, even with Fedora Dolphin I can access this partitions. What could it be?

Nov 1, 2010I got ubuntu 10.04 lucid lynx along with windows (dual boot) and using Grub. On my computer, I have my C:/ (programs) and D:/ (data). I've never used my D:/ before that day that I've lost my windows partition on my grub menu. I usually use my D:/ with windows. The first time I used my D:/ to store data with linux, I lost my windows option in my grub menu. I'm not sure what I did wrong but I do want to restore my windows option in my grub menu.
After "fdisk -l",
I checked in /boot/grub and there is no menu.lst to modify. how I can get back my windows option in my grub menu ?
Ubuntu :: "reconnect" To The RAID Array Even If The "mothersystem" Of The Software RAID Is Lost?
Oct 19, 2010Consider the following setup: Ubuntu system installed on a separate SSD for speed. An ubuntu software RAID array consisting of X number of physical HDD's for storage (RAID6 or RAID10). RAID setup is done during system install. If I suffer a total crash of the SSD and loose my system, will I be able to, using a new system disk, "reconnect" to the RAID array even if the "mothersystem" of the software RAID is lost? If yes, are there any particular config- or system files I need to backup to be able to rescue the array or will it just be recognized "out-of-the-box" when reinstalling ubuntu?

Nov 26, 2010I have installed Ubuntu on my m1530 since 8.04 and currently dual boot Win7 and 10.10. I would like to dual boot on my PC, but I have run into a problem. I am not a pro at Ubuntu, but this problem I can not solve by reading forums like I have in the past.
I realize this is a common problem, but I have noticed people having success.
I have a M4A87TD EVO MB with two Seagate drives in Raid 0. (The raid controller is a SB850 on that MB) I use the raid utility to create the raid drive that Windows7x64 uses. I have 2 partitions and 1 unused space. Partition 1 is Windows, partition 2 is for media, and the remaining unused space is for Ubuntu.
I am running ubuntu-10.10-desktop-amd64 off a Cruzer 16GB flash drive that was installed via Universal-USB-Installer-1.8.1.4.
My problem like so many others is that when I load into Ubuntu, gparted detects two separate hard drives instead of the raid. I read that this is because kpartx is not installed on 10.10. I then went in LiveCD mode and downloaded kpartx from Synaptic Manager. Gparted still reported two drives. I opened terminal and run a few commands with kpartx. I received an error. (Forgive me I didn't write it down, but I believe it said something about a communication error. I will try again later and see.)
Currently I am reflashing the Cruzer with a persistence of 4GB. I am not familiar with this process, but I understand that my LiveCD boot will save information I download to it. I decided to try this method because I was going to install kpartx and reboot to see if this made a difference.
I am looking for any suggestions on a different method or perhaps someone to tell me that the raid controller or some hardware isn't supported. I did install ubuntu-10.10-alternate-amd64 on my flash drive, but fail to get past detecting my CD-ROM drive since it's not plugged in. If this method is viable, I will plug it in. I also watched the ..... video were a guy creates Raid 0 with the alternated CD, but it wasn't a dual boot and didn't use a raid controller from a MB.
Ubuntu Servers :: Lost Partiontable On RAID 1 Array?
Jun 4, 2010I just restarted my server (Ubuntu 9.04 server, running on ESXi 4.0) and while copying files onto the server using samba I got strange problems and the connection was lost. When I rebooted the total system, so ESXi as well as Ubuntu Server I did find problems on my RAID disk.
The directory, where the new files were added I have a lot of files, but a lot of them do not have any info except their name:

Now the 2 disks are seen as two separate disks, with no link between them.

Sep 15, 2010It's been a real battle, but I am getting close.I won't go into all the details of the fight that I have had, but I've almost made it to the finish line. Here is the set up. ASUS Z8PE-D18 mother board 2 CPU, 8 Gig Ram. I recently added an OCZ Agility SSD, defined a raid 1 virtual disk on the 1 terabyte WD HDD drives, which will holds all of my user data, the SSD is for executables.The bios is set to AHCI. Windows 7 installed fine, recognizes the raid VD just fine.
I installed Ubuntu 10.04 by first booting into try and mode, then opening a terminal and issuing a "sudo dmraid -ay" command. Then performing the install. I told it to install the raid components, and told it to let me specify the partitions manually. When setting up the partitions, I told it to use the free space I set aside on the SSD from the Windows 7 install as ext4 and to mount root there. Ubuntu installed just fine, grub2 comes up just fine, and Windows 7 boots with out a hitch, recognizing the mirrored partition as I indicated previously. When I tell grub to boot linux however, it pauses and I get the "no block devices found" message. It will then boot, but it does not recognize the raid array. After Ubuntu starts up I can run "dmraid -ay" and it recognizes the raid array, but shows the two component disks of the raid array as well. It will not allow the component disks to be mounted, but they show up which is annoying. (I can live with that if I have to)
I have fixed a similar problem before by setting up a dmraid script in /etc/initramfs-tools/scripts/local-top ... following the instructions found at the bottom of this blog:[URL].. To recap: My problem is that after grub2 fires up Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS (Lucid Lynx), it pauses, and I get "no block devices found" It then boots but does not recognize the raid array untill I manually run "dmraid -ay". I've hunted around for what to do but I have not found anything. It may be some timing issue or something, but I am so tired of beating my head against this wall.

Jun 14, 2011I was trying to resize to the left the sdb5 partition where ubuntu is/was installed and things got messy. I lost the partition it was unallocated. Next "cleverly" used livecd and reinstall ubuntu (thinking it was just like a repair the system thing) but instead ubuntu install from new...all my data is lost...gone with the wind. I try sadly enough testdisk but it says partition corrupted impossible to recover. Now the whole disk shows as unallocated in gparted.
I am running ubuntu from a second hard drive and strange enough my windows 7 partition with files is save and sound. I wonder if there is anything I can do to recover my files (guess the enitre partition now is lost). I try photorec and no files were able to recover then try scalpel and it says files were not find or couldn't read the partition. Of course "cleverly" I didn't had a recent back up of my files. Now I cant access the new ubuntu partition that still in sdb5 at boot takes me directly to windows 7.

Feb 1, 2011Could any RAID gurus kindly assist me on the following RAID-5 issue?I have an mdadm-created RAID5 array consisting of 4 discs. One of the discs was dropping out, so I decided to replace it. Somehow, this went terribly wrong and I succeeded in marking two of the drives as faulty, and the re-adding them as spare.
Now the array is (logically) no longer able to start:
mdadm: Not enough devices to start the array.Degraded and can't create RAID ,auto stop RAID [md1]
I was able to examine the disks though:

What I want to do is as I save files to one data partition partition (or delete them) I want the files copying/deleted automatically on the the other data partition. I do not want to start using RAID or end-of-day incremental backups.

Two days ago, the system (Ubuntu 9.04) started to refuse to write to it, claiming no space left on device - even if there is ca. 102GB free left, if the disk is 85% full (according to df)! Interestingly, removing a couple of GB did not help, after reboot the disk was again full..
I did the "tune2fs -m 0" trick and then forced file check on next reboot by "sudo touch /forcefsck" .. and the result is that the raid partition is gone. I have the two physical drives /dev/sd*, unmounted, but the /dev/md1 is no longer there. What can I do to re-create it, without losing the data? I realized that I ran tune2fs on the physical partitions /dev/sd* - was I supposed to run it on /dev/md1?

Feb 26, 2011I'm using Windows 7 and Ubuntu in two differents partitions in my hard drive. I was on Windows 7 and decided to reboot. When the grub screen should have appeared, instead the computer rebooted itself. It continues to do so. I put Ubuntu 10.10 Live CD and it keeps "loading" forever, but doesn't hang. In the console, it said something like "input/output" error. I tried with my Win 7 DVD and it was the same: it doesn't reach the part where it shows the menu with all the installation options.
I tried with Gparted and it loaded fine. It showed all my partitions, but there wasn't (I think) more that I could have done with it. I tried then user Super Grub Boot. I finally could enter Ubuntu. Everything is fine except that it doesn't show my Window partition. It's like it doesn't exist anymore, so I can't backup my files. Now, I haven't tried loading Win 7 from Super Grub Boot (I'm going to do it just as soon as I post this), but this is pretty weird. Anyone have any idea what is going on and what can I do to this this?
