During boot-up of openSUSE 11.2 (dup'd from 11.1; default runlevel 3) the following message appears:
Code:
My question now: Is there a way to tell SUSE to set the above mentioned keymap using UTF-8 encoding instead of assuming ISO-8859-15?
The few Google search results (~7) on this topic also seem to indicate that this is a 'German-only' problem because it only seems to appear when setting German keymaps.

I avoid capslock like the plague and use "ctrl:nocaps" when in X, and would like to have the same behaviour in the console. Back when I was using Debian I got it set up the way I want, but now I can't seem to locate the default keymap. I tried editing
Code:
/usr/share/kbd/keymaps/i386/qwerty/defkeymap.map.gz
and it works when I use loadkeys manually, but not on boot.

Every time I log in, I get 5 alerts. When I check them out, there is nothing to see. Everything is blank. I'm tired of seeing this lousy popup each time I login. How can I fix this? Also, how do I change the systems default keymap to dvorak (before login screen)

I'm running through an Emacs tutorial and I was trying to figure out how to exchange CTRL and CAPSLOCK.
1. From the Emacs Wiki, i saw
Code:
As super-user:
$ loadkeys emacs
$ echo "loadkeys emacs" >> /etc/rc.d/rc.local
so, maybe stupidly I tried this. Which seems to have changed nothing.
so then I try
Code:
loadkeys -d
to try and get back to the default. Which doesn't seem to work. so then thinking i should reset everything, try to go in /usr/share/kbd/keymaps/i386/qwerty and do
Code:
loadkeys defkeymap.map.gz
Finally, I go into /etc/X11 and edit xorg.conf-vesa to uncomment
Code:
# If you'd like to switch the positions of your capslock and
# control keys, use:
#
Option "XkbOptions" "ctrl:swapcaps"
and restart.
To no avail...

I have encountered a problem when installing fedora 12.
1- It told me that there is no sufficient RAM so it logged in text mode. But I have 256 mb RAM and the lowest is 192mb for the graphical mode.
2- The RAM specified in the manual of fedora the DDR or the VGA.
3- After the installation it ask me to log in as shown localhost login:
What should I type in this? Whatever I wrote it ask me to write password. But if I try to write any thing in it, it didn't respond or write any thing.
4- How could I login the graphical mode after installation in text mode.
5- I have encountered another problem when boot the set it load fedora by default and didn't ask me to choose between fedora and previously installed windows xp.

I'm on an HP envy with with hybrid graphics configuration. I installed debian 7.7 from DVD, but it failed to load i915 driver on its own. It loaded nouveau. But gnome falls back to classic mode. There is not brightness control either.I tried adding i915 to /etc/modules and also blacklisted nouveau at the command line. Now i915 gets loaded, but with some hickups as shown in dmesg. Still I'm in fallback mode in gnome.
Code: Select alljay@aura-envy:~$ dmesg | grep drm
[ 16.152467] [drm] Initialized drm 1.1.0 20060810
[ 16.161706] [drm:i915_init] *ERROR* drm/i915 can't work without intel_agp module!
So I went ahead and added intel_agp (before i915 line) to modules file, but still no luck. I suspect there is no module called intel_agp at the first place, because :
Code: Select alljay@aura-envy:~$ sudo modinfo intel_agp
[sudo] password for jay:
ERROR: Module intel_agp not found.

How do I change the ugly default orange color for the loading bars and stuff? I know how to change things with the window manager, but that only changes the frames and "min, max, close" buttons. I like everything about the theme I have, and the way the window manager is set, except it uses that ugly orange color when things are loading or downloading. How do I change that part? Can I change only that part by itself?

in 13.0 I remember I had to setup some HAL stuff to get a UK keyboard. Now I have upgraded to 13.1 and my keyboard has been replaced with a US keyboard, so I would like to change the keymap to match. From what I have found when reading X no longer uses HAL? In which case, how would I change the keymap? I am not using an xorg config file.

Some time ago I acquired a non-working Apple Power Macintosh G4 with an Apple Pro Keyboard - model M7803 - (and a LaCie electron22blue CRT monitor). The fault turned out to be simple to fix and a re-install of OS X Leopard produced a working system - with all keys on the keyboard returning the symbols engraved thereon. BUT - Leopard is the last version of OS X to support PPC machines. SO - I've added a second hard drive which I'm using to experiment with dual-booted Linux distributions. I'm currently using the latest version of MintPPC. The first installation step is to do a network install of a basic CLI Debian Squeeze setup. Then the 'Mint' bits are added. System Monitor reports:Debian Release 6.0.1
Kernel 2.6.32-5-powerpc
GNOME 2.30.2
My M7803 keyboard is sort of 'British' - Shift+3 gives ''.However, compared to a standard 105-key PC keyboard, @ and " are interchanged in the US fashion. The installed keymap handles these keys but fails for the two extra keys - key 49 (the key to the left of '1') and key 94 (the key to the left key of 'Z'). I found a 'fix' for this here: [URL] using xmodmap. BUT - this fix has to be done each time the machine is started. how can I make the changes 'stick'? One way would be to create a modified keymap and then point my system to it. However, all of the suggestions I've found on how to do this founder on the non-availability of either an application or a file or some detail of how to ensure that the modified keymap is used. Edit] Should have followed the Ubuntu forum thread to the bitter end. Creating a ~/.Xmodmap file automates the process - but you would need to create this file for each user.

I just happened to lock myself out of ssh access on my xen virtual server since I changed the ssh port but forgot to open it in the firewall. No problem, I just access it through VNC in VM manager, I thought, however I have some special chars in my root password and the keymap through VNC seems to have changed somehow. So I cant login as root, nor do su or sudo. I can login as user. I need the sign " but can't figure out how.

I've installed wmii as window manager (slackware 13.1) locally, i.e. not system wide. I use a german keyboard and this works fine until I start my window manager. within wmii the german layout is not present (neither in xterm nor in emacs or ooo3 etc). I changed the file /etc/X11/xorg-conf already accordingly but without any effect. Hence I suspect that the local installation of the wmii requires a change of another config-file?!

I just noticed that my USB sticks are not automatically mounted anymore after having updated kernel from 2.6.32-24-generic to 2.6.32-25-generic on my Acer Extensa 5220 laptop. It still works if I "sudo modprobe usb-storage". What might have gone wrong? I'm not experiencing this on my desktop machine also running 10.04. How to fix this permanently? And now I remember that I'm not able to use my mobile broadband either (Nokia N900 in PC Suite mode through USB). It's just not detected anymore. It must suffer from this same problem. I tried to roll back to the previous kernel, but then the restricted driver for my Broadcom WLAN refuses to install

I am running Centos 5.5 X86_64 and recently after updating my server, I am having problem loading gnome. When the server boots, and begins to bring up the login screen theme, I get an error that states "Could not recognize the image file format for /usr/share/gdm/themes/TreeFlower/background.png"I am able to login after clicking ok to this message, and using the "simplistic" login manager. But when the users desktop loads, there are several errors pertaining to "unsupported image format" and none of the icons are displaying correctly. They are just the default "curvy page" icon for an unassociated file type. Some of the icons do not even show up at all.
Another thing I noticed wierd is that when I try to view a png, nothing happens. When I try to open one using gimp, I get an "unsupported file type" error. When I tried to click on the "add/remove software" button I get prompted for root pass, but nothing happens.

I installed CentOS on an HP server with 5i RAID controller (so it's hardware RAID) and installed GRUB to the MBR. However, it boots straight to Windows XP without seeing the GRUB loader at all.
Configuration is this.
Windows installed on RAID0 drive
CentOS installed on a separate RAID0
Windows fileshare on RAID5
I'm guessing that since the RAID controller doesn't "see" separate drives in each array, that I'll need to do some "fudging" to get it to work, like maybe using Windows' pathetic loader to load GRUB and go from there, but I have no idea how. Do I have to make the drive "seeable" by Windows first by assigning it a drive letter under Windows Disk Manager, and then add it to the bootloader ini file?

The error is the same for the other computer except while attempting to update the rpmforge repository. Nothing has really changed on the servers in some time and 'yum update' worked fine on each yesterday and I have no idea why they would both suddenly fail!

I tried to kind of beautify my CentOS 5.3. So I kind of break some rules ( like compiling tar balls.. ). To cut it short, I installed avant window navigator ( source, compile, etc ). Before that I also installed compiz ( which made my desktop kind of much more *alive* ). Problem is there are some bugs on AWN, then I think my webcam got affected too ( not showing proper display ). I then decided to uninstall compiz thru YUM. After this, restarted my system, then whooppss my Gnome, won't load properly. the AWN was gone, then the bottom part of my desktop was just black. I only got a top menu, which whatever application I open there's no top bar on it ( where you see the name of the window ). Also every application just shows up on my upper left corner of the screen. So I definitely broke it. So I switched to another session ( Ctrl Alt F2 ) then went into a terminal. I tried to load again another X Session ( Ctrl Alt F8/F9 ), but nothing comes up, am I doing that wrong?
Now in cases like this where the GUI is not loading correctly, what work-arounds are usually made? I did some tweaks by guessing everything will kind of reset by renaming my gnome hidden folders, but no luck. What to do on this situations? Is it possible to kind of switch to pure terminal session, uninstall whole Gnome package there, remove some settings, reinstall Gnome and everything will be ok again? Or is it possible if Gnome is broke like kind of start a KDE session? How's this things relate to XOrg11.conf something? Could anyone just give like some overview like which sits on top of what.
Since I can't fix my problem yesterday I just reformatted laptop and reinstalled 5.3 with Virtualization checked, and I noticed my kernel says "xen". I thought of trying this builtin virtualization software because I had problems with VMWare before also.

I recently setup a software RAID1 with two hard drives for testing. I manually unplugged one hard drive to test redundancy and it was fine. I then did the same to the second and plugged back in the first and it was fine. But when I plugged both back in it is only loading one of the mirrors instead of both. I am guessing when the mirror (failed), at least as far as the system knew it removed it from the load sequence to prevent data corruption... how do I go about re-enabling it?.

I am a complete novice when it comes to Linux, but want to learn, and installed CentOS5 on an old P4 Dell I had lying around.
Dell Dimension 8100 BIOS is version A02
Install seemed to go fine, but when I power up I get the following message
Red Hat nash version 5.1.19.6 starting
hdb: timeout waiting for DMA
hdb: drive not ready for command
this happens a few times each, then CentOS finally loads.
If Im understanding this right, DMA is direct memory access.
Is it possible the hard drive, motherboard etc does not support this?

I have tried everything I can think of to get the Java plugin working on Centos 5.5 and Firefox.I'm using the sun version of Java that I downloaded: jdk-6u18-linux-i586.rpm
I do have it installed already on a seperate partition that survives OS upgrades. Do I need to have the same version of Java in my alternatives dir, or will the Java browser plugin work regardless of which Java is installed on the system? Another way of expressing this: Is the Java browser plugin a standalone application that works independently of the system-installed Java version, or does the browser plugin rely on the installed JRE to function? So I have made a symbolic link from /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/@libjavaplugin_oji.so
to my Java plugin, under:
/usr/local/java/jdk1.6.0_18/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so
There are actually 2 versions of the Java plugin - which one should I be using?
/ns7
/ns7-gcc29
I take it it's the non-gcc29 version? When I restart Firefox nothing is showing in the about :plugins window.I have disabled all the other mozilla plugins, just in case they are stopping the the Java plugin from loading.
