5 :: Hdb : Timeout Errors When Loading CentOS / Soluton For This?

May 3, 2010

I am a complete novice when it comes to Linux, but want to learn, and installed CentOS5 on an old P4 Dell I had lying around.
Dell Dimension 8100 BIOS is version A02
Install seemed to go fine, but when I power up I get the following message

Red Hat nash version starting
hdb: timeout waiting for DMA
hdb: drive not ready for command

this happens a few times each, then CentOS finally loads.

If Im understanding this right, DMA is direct memory access.
Is it possible the hard drive, motherboard etc does not support this?

CentOS 5 :: Hdb: Timeout Errors After Power Off Only

May 4, 2010

The problems I was having earlier: [URL]seemed to be solved.

I was not getting any error messages after restart. I should have powered down fully, but did not think that it would make a difference. :(

The same issue is again occurring, but after shutdown ONLY and only on the first boot. After the first boot, a system restart will not cause any error messages. (I have rebooted at least ten or twenty times to make sure)

But after a system shutdown, the first boot hangs up and I get the

"Red Hat nash version starting hdb: timeout waiting for DMA hdb: drive not ready for command"

errors five or six times before each boot. Also the system boots very slowly the first time.

I used the getinfo.sh all command and posted the info to the suggested site here: [URL]

Is it possible this could be a hardware issue? This is an old salvaged HDD. Ive changed everything I c an think of in the BIOS with no results.

I have used the hdparm -d /dev/hdb command and verified that dma is not being used on initial boot or after a shutoff but IS being used after a reboot...

here are the HDD settings
multcount = 16 (on)
IO_support = 0 (default 16-bit)
unmaskirq = 0 (off)

Networking :: BlackArmor NAS 110 Having Timeout Errors

May 17, 2010

My spouse bought me a Seagate BlackArmor NAS 110 recently, and I finally had time to connect it to our home network. I have samba installed, and my linux box (opensuse 11.1) can see the NAS, but when I try to open the network connection I get a "timeout on server" message. I bumped up the network connections, but still no luck. The odd thing is that last night I was able to connect and see the public folders for awhile. And her Windows Vista computer seems to connect without a problem after using the seagate software.

I'm no network admin, and have exhausted my resources on this.

CentOS 5 :: Centos 5.4 Grub Timeout Value Not Working?

Apr 15, 2010

pulled up an old clunker and put centos 5.4 on it the other day. well the grub spash screen appears but i have to manually hit enter to select a kernel.at the /boot/grub/grub.conf file and timeout=5. this is a new install. so I tried changing that value to 0 and it does boot the kernel immediately but never displays the splash screen. so something is not right I assume. btw I see a message (loading stage 2) for about 20 seconds as the computer boots and I have never seen that message on my ubuntu machine, so I wonder if something is off there.

General :: Errors In Console-text That Appears While The Debian OS Is Loading - Play Music - No Sound

Jul 11, 2011

I've been using Linux for about a week, now, and yesterday I finally got my audio to work. Before shutting-down yesterday, I installed some more audio-plugins. When I started-up my computer today, there were errors in the console-text that appears while the Debian Linux OS is loading. When I got to the desktop, I tried to play music, but no sound came-out. So, I tried to uninstall the plugins I installed yesterday and restarted. I got similar errors in the console-text as earlier. When my desktop loaded, I still had no sound. I had several problems with the entire sound architecture of the computer. I made some more changes in the application-download-manager-thingy and restarted and I no longer got the errors at boot-time.

Unfortunately, I still have absolutely no sound, and it appears as if ALSA is effectively dead. My soundcards are Rocketfish (PCI) and Realtek HD Audio (Integrated). I got Realtek to work yesterday with OSS.

Another problem is that WINE doesn't work, with the exception of WINE's default programs. I've been trying to get this thing to work for at least four days now, and I've made absolutely no progress...

Also, after fighting with it for a few days, I finally managed to get the internet to work, but Linux still thinks that I'm offline. It's really weird. This one's not so much of a problem as it is annoying. In addition, if I click-on the network-manager-thingy, it says that none of my connections have ever been used. Odd.

CentOS 5 Networking :: Transactions Timeout - Yum / Wget And HTTP

Apr 28, 2011

I am having a problem with 5.4 that I did not have with 4.5. The problem happens only sometimes but in specific instances. Basically a summary of the problem is that certain network transactions timeout. The specific instances are with wget, rpm, http. The problem usually, but not always, occurs with pptp stuff. (NOT running pptp but getting pptp stuff). For instance, the following command, which finishes in seconds on non-5.4 OS's:
wget [URL]
downloads about 20% then gets stuck. About 5 minutes later it downloads another 20% and then gets stuck, etc. The same thing with rpm:
rpm -ivh [URL]
waits about 3 minutes and then gives an error. I think it does the same thing as the wget but
wget will keep trying, while rpm gives up. The error from rpm:
Retrieving [URL]
..five minutes later:

I can wget the above as I mentioned before and install it that way. Before I do it, yum works fine. Afterwards, yum exhibits the same behavior of timing out (because it is using the pptp repository). Also visiting the pptp web site from Firefox times out on certain pages. I originally thought it was some problem with the pptp site, but I notice that log into hotmail.com. Does the same thin (fine on other operating systems). A view with Wireshark on the wget (pptp) shows the my machine receiving a reassembled TCPPDU from (Sourceforge), sending an ack, receiving a reassembled PDU, sending an ack, receiving, sending followed by the 5 minutes or whatever of nothing. Then sourceforge sends an RST and a SYN and the process is repeated.

When I put the machine directly on an AT&T IP connection (12.147.X.Y) everything worked fine. Same with Comcast on a direct link. The times I am having problems is when our router is hooked up to a Comcast IP (70.88.X.Y) and assigns 192.168.5.X addresses to our machines. So when I was doing the above from going through the router through Comcast is when I had the problem. So it is probably something with the router, but it is hard to figure out since CentOS 4.5 and Fedora do not exhibit this behavior, nor does 5.4 on most sites (mail.yahoo.com for instance). I did verify, at least from what I could, that ICMP type 3 and 4 are not being blocked. If they were, the same problem would happen on other op systems. And I was able to ping, albeit just locally, but we looked at the router settings and ping was not blocked.

CentOS 5 :: Errors / Warnings At Boot?

Sep 14, 2010

I've made a CentOS 5 x86_64 setup last year, around november/december.This system is supposed to operate as a home router/gateway, firewall, nas, small intranet/extranet server and media center.I've previously built a system using older parts (Pentium III 866MHz), and had on it CentOS 5 x86.It successfully served the same purpose (except nas and media center) for quite some time, about 1-2years, until i felt i needed better hardware (more memory, speed and disk space mainly) and 64-bit support.

Part of this intended setup isn't finished (router/gateway, firewall, media center), partially because i'm still lacking a good 1000mbps switch and a supported wireless n 3-antenna card in AP/server mode.In the previous setup, i had router/gateway, firewall and small intranet/extranet server working, with a crappy 100mbps switch (the switch is broken now).the new setup has run pretty well, it had been upgraded 2 times, etc...But since it has been installed, even before any updates, upgrades or repo additions, there has been always warnings/errors during kernel boot.I'm listing my specs, configs, versions and logs bellow. all the partitions, RAID and LVM were created during CentOS initial setup.

CentOS 5 :: Icons Not Loading / And Will Not Display .png

Nov 29, 2010

I am running Centos 5.5 X86_64 and recently after updating my server, I am having problem loading gnome. When the server boots, and begins to bring up the login screen theme, I get an error that states "Could not recognize the image file format for /usr/share/gdm/themes/TreeFlower/background.png"I am able to login after clicking ok to this message, and using the "simplistic" login manager. But when the users desktop loads, there are several errors pertaining to "unsupported image format" and none of the icons are displaying correctly. They are just the default "curvy page" icon for an unassociated file type. Some of the icons do not even show up at all.

Another thing I noticed wierd is that when I try to view a png, nothing happens. When I try to open one using gimp, I get an "unsupported file type" error. When I tried to click on the "add/remove software" button I get prompted for root pass, but nothing happens.

5 :: Installed CentOS But GRUB Not Loading / What To Fix It?

Feb 5, 2011

I installed CentOS on an HP server with 5i RAID controller (so it's hardware RAID) and installed GRUB to the MBR. However, it boots straight to Windows XP without seeing the GRUB loader at all.

Configuration is this.

Windows installed on RAID0 drive
CentOS installed on a separate RAID0
Windows fileshare on RAID5

I'm guessing that since the RAID controller doesn't "see" separate drives in each array, that I'll need to do some "fudging" to get it to work, like maybe using Windows' pathetic loader to load GRUB and go from there, but I have no idea how. Do I have to make the drive "seeable" by Windows first by assigning it a drive letter under Windows Disk Manager, and then add it to the bootloader ini file?
