I had the elrepo kmod-r8168 driver running smooth for a while on my development box.
Yesterday, I did a clean install on it and when I tried to install the latest kmod-r8168 rpm, it failed to enable the networking support:
# yum --enablerepo=elrepo install kmod-r8168
The install performed all proper steps to disable the 8169 driver, I double checked to be sure. This is not a connectivity issue. If I remove the kmod-r8168 rpm, reboot the server and run the ifconfig eth0 up to activate the interface, everything works as expected. I use the latest kernel (2.6.18-194.26.1.el5 x86_64).
First, I performed a clean install, activated the eth0 and did a yum update, then installed the kmod-r8168 with yum. Then, I reinstalled the OS again, activated the eth0 and installed the kmod-r8168 on a 5.5 CD based kernel, same fail results. The only hiccup is: every time I start the box, I have to activate the eth0 interface (with default CentOS 8169 driver):
# ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.3
# ping -c 3 192.168.1.1 (no packets lost)
# ifconfig eth0 up
Once I do this, I have network connectivity.

I want to monitor network bandwidth/usage/stats on an interface dedicated to iSCSI traffic.I've read nagios is one of the better solutions available, and I've found a How-To here: Installing Nagios on CentOS 4.x/5.x.But it seems yum won't install it. Am I missing something? Is it no longer possible to install nagios with yum? Should I use a different mirror?

When I attempt to install a new hardware system over the wire via NFS I get the following error:"unable ro retrieve http://192.168.0.1//install/images/stage2.img."The httpd.conf file is configured to use /var/www/html as the root. I have placed the installation files in /var/www/html/install. In the http install screen I enter the following information:Web site name: 192.168.0.101CentOS directory: installI have tried many different variations in these two entires, but the error always is the samw: the installation script searches for an address which has an extra / character interposed between the server IP address and the directory path entered in the next line.

I'm familiar with linux (Debian/Ubuntu), but new to CentOS. I recently installed CentOS 5.2 on a new server for my radio station. I can log in and do everything fine, save connect to any network. I only have a Broadcom wired nic. I know the wire and ethernet jack work fine, so that lead me to the server's settings. I'm not sure if I missed something somewhere, or a similar post (I'm sorry for double-posting if this has been done before).
There is a static IP address set, and that's done correctly.
From what I've seen, someone would like to see /sbin/lspci | grep -i ether: 03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5722 Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express

We have a process whereby we used a rescuecd and partimage to take a snapshot image of one of our laptops, then we use it to lay down the snapshot on other laptops as requests for them come in. The image was created on an HP (Compaq) 8510, and has always worked laying it down on other 8510s.
So now we get a stack of HP Elitebook 8530s, which will be our new standard. So we're testing how laying down the old 8510 image will work laying it down on the new 8530s. As far as putting down the filesystem image, all looks great. However, we'reseeing the msg "bringing up interface eth0: e1000 device eth0 does not seem to be present, delaying initialization." Which I believe is his way of telling me "sorry, whatever driver you've given me can't drive this ethernet card." And needless to say, ifconfig -a doesn't even show anything on eth0.
I'm thinking (hoping) that if we get and install the proper driver to drive the ethernet adapter that's onboard the 8530, we can get this guy some network connectivity, at which point the rest of the tweaks we need to make should be comparatively easy.
how to get the proper driver and b) how to install it? Keep in mind this machine has no connectivity, so I'll have to sneakernet it over from my laptop to the machine.

I have been trying searching and reading for a few days now and I have had no luck getting a Encore ENLWI-G2 wireless pci adapter to install. I downloaded their Linux driver [URL]...and I keep getting errors on the makedrv (attached). I get a couple "make: *** /lib/modules/2.6.18-92.el5/build: No such file or directory. Stop. " errors but the modules appear to be there.
I have not touched Linux in 5 or 6 years, so pretty rusty. I have a call in at Encore support and will post their solution if they get to me first.

I have recently set up a CENTOS server using the kernel 2.6.18-164.el5xen (x64 5.4 Install I believe). Originally I set it up with Xen to becasue I was goig to create the odd VM on it, however I no longer need to do this.Further, I believe I am having networking issues due to the installation of Xen. The machine cannot seem to locate any network addresses (eg websites) unless I put in a hosts entry for them. I believe this networking issue would be easier to rectify if the virtual networking interfaces for Xen were not installed but to do this requires a Kernel replacement. Im not experienced with doing this and the machine is located remotely to me and I dont have the original install CD available. How would I go about replacing the kernel to the non Xen version if I dont have the install CDs?

I'm trying to install CentOS 5.4 from my local repo, booting the server from centos54-netinstall iso (vmware). I write "linux URL..." during boot. I eventually get prompted for network config, where I choose manual configuration. Hitting OK ignores my config and defaults back to dhcp, which won't work since I don't have any dhcp server available.Whats wrong? Is there a bug in anaconda?

Does a network install assign a pingable ip during installation? I am trying to verify why I get an error during installation that "stage2.img" cannot be found and I'm guessing that since I can *not* ping the static IP I assigned, that the network functionality is not working during the install process. Can anyone confirm if I should be able to ping a system during installation using the assigned static IP?

I have just purchased an Edimax EW-7128g with Ralink RT61 chip and physically installed it in a system running CentOS 5.2. Trying to follow the installation instructions, I get the following:
[root@webtest Module]# make all
make -C /lib/modules/2.6.18-92.el5/build SUBDIRS=/root/drivers/2007_1210_RT61_Linux_STA_v1.1.2.0/Module modules
make: *** /lib/modules/2.6.18-92.el5/build: No such file or directory. Stop.
make: *** [all] Error 2
The problem is that although /lib/modules/2.6.18-92.el5/build exists, it appears to be a link:
[root@webtest Module]# ls -l /lib/modules/2.6.18-92.el5/build
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 43 Mar 23 15:34 /lib/modules/2.6.18-92.el5/build -> ../../../usr/src/kernels/2.6.18-92.el5-i686

I just started setting up a linux box in the office...I have some experience with ssh commands but not setting up a linux system and stuff. The box is connected to our network but I have no clue how to make windows & osx talk with it. How can I go by doing that and also setting up an apache server to be able to connect through network. Right now I have apache/linux/mysql running it works when i go to localhost, but I would also like to let all the computers in office to access it. I would guess that will deal with virtual host which I know how to setup. I just need to setup an IP.
