CentOS 5 Networking :: Does Network Install Assign Pingable Ip During Installation
Jul 23, 2011
Does a network install assign a pingable ip during installation? I am trying to verify why I get an error during installation that "stage2.img" cannot be found and I'm guessing that since I can *not* ping the static IP I assigned, that the network functionality is not working during the install process. Can anyone confirm if I should be able to ping a system during installation using the assigned static IP?

I have installed a Netgear WG111v3 wireless USB networking adapter on an OpenSUSE 11.3 system. I'm using ndiswrapper to run the Windows driver. Using the "Network Settings" GNOME applet (says "Network Settings - YaST" in the title bar) it shows that I have the adapter installed as wlan0, but it's not connected. However, if I go to the "Network Tools" applet (says "Devices - Network Tools" in the title bar) and select "Wireless Interface (wlan0)" from the drop-down, it says that I have an IPv4 address of 192.168.1.104. This is a plausible address that my router could have served. However, I cannot use the network interface from the box itself.

On every machine that SSHes in, the connection gets dropped randomly between immediately, and 30 minutes into the session, while the user is actively using the remote system (typing, etc). Before, during and after the disconnection, the system responds to pings regularly (0% packet loss). It takes about 5-10 minutes before I can make an SSH connection again.I have tried restarting SSH on the server and rebooting the server. I even removed and reinstalled sshd and it is still happening. What might be causing these random disconnects and how might I solve this?

I have been installing CentOS 5.5 on a VirtualBox virtual machine using the netinstall iso (leaving almost all options on default). It automatically obtained addresses of the nameserver the host machine was using. However shortly before the installation would have finished the nameserver went down and the installer started giving error "file ... cannot be opened".
After changing the nameserver address (to Google DNS 8.8.8.8) in /etc/resolv.conf , addresses can be resolved again (wget, ping) but the installer still gives the same error and attempts to connect to the original DNS.It there a way to tell the installer about the DNS change and resume installation? Or do I have to either wait for the original DNS or to do the whole installation again?

I'm trying to install CentOS 5.4 from my local repo, booting the server from centos54-netinstall iso (vmware). I write "linux URL..." during boot. I eventually get prompted for network config, where I choose manual configuration. Hitting OK ignores my config and defaults back to dhcp, which won't work since I don't have any dhcp server available.Whats wrong? Is there a bug in anaconda?

How would you assign a server a public static IP ?
Ok.. I guess to better ask my question... how to assign server public static IP centos? Like for example I am in the router itself.. where would I go to point ip 44.33.33.21. to ?> 192.168.1.4
What would be the most common in the routers?

I have installed Ubuntu 8.10 Server Edition on Virtual Box. When I start the virtual machine I do not have connection to my home network. The router I have does not assign any IP address to this machine. Now I have some questions which I am finding hard to find answers for over the internet and other forums.
If I do have a network interface (I checked this using ifconfig -a) then is there a command to actually make the operating system connect to that network (something like repair on windows)?? Also what is the difference between a network interface with alias eth0 and eth5? I know that when it was eth0 the virtual machine used to connect to the network automatically. Now that it is eth5 it does not! I do not know however if this is related.

i know exactly what i need to do, im just not familiar enough with command line to do it properly.i have 7 computers.the first 4 are connected to a router via wireless at one end of the house. of the last 3 only 1 will be able to access the router via wireless, so it needs to share it's one wireless connection via ethernet. this computer i'm going to call 'server'server will have two IP'swlan0 192.168.1.6 this connects to the router that has internet access.eth0 i intend to have the following settingsip:192.168.0.1sub: 255.255.0eth0 will connect to a second router, where the cat5 cable goes from the server, into the internet port of the router where i will define the router's static IP:IP: 192.168.0.100sub: 255.255.255.0gateway 192.168.0.1i have then set the router IP for LAN handling as 192.168.27.1 and all ethernet connections will have a 192.168.27.x IP.
so i need to know how to, without a gui application, use the terminal to assign server eth0 a proper IP address, and tell the server to take the connection it has and share it through eth0 to supply internet for the last 2 computers via ethernet.i had it set up in this way with a windows machine being the one that had the wifi access, but i'd rather have it setup for the ubuntu server to do this task. security is imperative for these 3 remaining machines, so just getting 2 more wifi adapters for a connection to the initial router isn't an option.the 2 that connect to server do so through SSH and though server IS connected via wireless it only makes outward connections through

My server has 2 network cards. I have SLES 10 SP2 installed on this server. I had configured Ethernet bonding on this machine using 2 NICs. Now I want to assign 2 different IP's to 2 different NICs. I am able to do this without any issue using yast. ifconfig command shows that eth0 has 192.168.1.10 and eth1 has 192.168.1.12. Rest all networking details are same (netmask, gateway, DNS)
Strange thing: When I unplug only eth0, (eth1 is plugged in correctly) I am not able to ping any IP.
If I unplug only eth1, (eth0 is plugged in) I am able to ping both IP's.

I have set up a cloud (Ubuntu) environment in my test lad and it's working fine I am confused setting up the public IP in the production environment. The cloud instance will get only a Internal IP address ( Private) we cannot bind the Public Ip to the cloud instance as it uses Elastic IP, so I am confused how can I set up this if I have about 250 Public Ip to 250 cloud instance. How will I map this 250 Public IP with the 250 internal IPs is there any hardware device.
