CentOS 5 Hardware :: S3 Savage4 Resolution Locked - How To Unlock It
May 22, 2009
For some reason, I can't seem to get the videocard to use the native resolution of any monitor I plug in, no matter what EDID information passes by the hardware. The hardware built into this server is a S3 Savage4 8MB. I tried to use the EDID info to create Modelines in xorg.conf, but it seems these get ignored outright Trying to reconfig with different drivers, the only ones that work (properly) appear to be VESA and SAVAGE (S3 and S3ViRGE didnt work). XRANDR wasn't much help either, it listed many short modes, maxing at 1024x768 Modes available:
1024x768
800x600
640x480
Monitor Modes of Monitors Tested available and in EDID, which CentOS/Xorg/whatever is ignoring:
Olevia 237-S11
Native Size: 1360x768
Resolution Maximum: 1920x1080 (downsample)
[code]...
All three of the monitors above, even with reconfigure and their best-bet drivers failed to offer anything but those three resolutions I listed above. Can anyone clarify for me if I'm missing something, or was the way the Savage driver coded that it is limited to 1024x768 maximum, regardless of panel and videocard capability?

I used playonlinux for a manual install of a game that needs more than one cd. I can't eject to install the next cd in line. How do I unlock the drive? I'm now in the middle of installing.

but I think I have a reasonable handle on the /etc/init.d, /sbin/service, chkconfig, and runlevels stuff under CentOS. However, when I install particular daemons (not part of CentOS distro), I get a weird issue. If I log in as root and do /sbin/service <daemon> status, it says "... is running...", however, if I log in as a non su, and do the same /sbin/service ... status, it says "xxx dead but subsys locked." Is the daemon running or not? I assume it's some kind of privilege issue with how the daemon is setup versus the non root login.I would like to have users be able to use service to query daemon status as works with the base daemons like sshd and httpd.

I have centos 5.5 64bit installed. When I start the httpd service I get the above message. The message is bogus because the server is running and web pages work. Is there a fix out there to resolve this?

I've got a box with a fresh installation of CentOS 5.6, but had several configs copied from an old 4.8 box that I've now got to finish. Most everything seems fine, but I can't get apache running. It reports that it starts up fine, but immediately stops and reports "httpd dead but subsys locked"Most of the advice I've found while searching suggests to just delete the http.pid file and restart, which doesn't help in my case. I did find a few problems where SELinux was restricting httpd from creating or touching certain files (I found reports in /var/log/messages) but I've worked through that.
So the big question here is: /var/log/messages and /var/log/httpd/error_log are now empty, and don't show any more errors when I restart httpd. Does anyone know where else I can look for reporting/logging on what's happening to httpd to cause it to die?

I have a 10x2tb disk array that i'm trying to build into a single software raid 5 i have tried this 2 times now the first it made it to 58.7% and the machine locked up and the array would not restart after a reboot. On my 2nd try all was looking good until about 50% i noticed that the speed dropped in 1/2 and that ksoftirqd/2 is taking up a lot of cpu (about 90%) the md0_resync and md0_raid5 are also taking 60-90% when the build started they took 7%. when i do a dmesg i see a lot of the message compute_blocknr: map not correct.
For a little info on the physical setup this is running on an Atom 510 with 2GB of mem the drives are connected to an addonics 4-Port RAID 5 / JBOD SATA II PCI Controller using the sil3124 chipset. I'm using 2 addonics 5X1 SATA Port Multiplier connected to the controller to get the 10 drives attached. All drive show up and don't seem to have any issues. I'm running a fully updated as of 3/20/10 version of centos 5.4
I will let this continue to run over night but i expect it to be locked up by morning if it follows what the last attempt did.

I have a centos 5.5 server, without a monitor connected to it.Sometime i need to connect to it with VNC, but maximum resolution is 800x600.How can i increase it at least 1024x748 ??I tried in system-config-display changing the monitor to a generic CRT 1024x768, and rebooted. But only allowed resolutions are 800x600 and 640x480.

i have been searching for the past few days on how to do this i have found many articles all telling me slightly different ways of doing so but none have worked. the monitor i am using displays at 1680x1050@60Hz however most access will be from a laptop running at 1366x768 through VNC i have the VNC working thats not a problem my current problem is that when i turn it on the screen defaults to 1600x1200@60Hz when i go to System>Preferences>Screen Resolution the options i get are 1600x1200, 1280x1200,1024x768, 800x600, 640x480 however when i change to something other than 1600x1200 the refresh rate changes to 85Hz and cannot be displayed by my monitor so i have to wait for it to default back, not that i want to change it to any of those in the long term /etc/X11/xorg.conf looks like this (i have only edited the Modes line)

I am having trouble changing the resolution in my Computer,I am new to Linux and somehow, Lucky, I got this program to install, I installed it on a Dell PowerEdge 1850 with a Radeon 7000 Video card,I had another one set-Up before which gave me a resolution of 1400 x xxxxx? Was great, this one only offers 800 x 600 and some other very low resolutions, The programing allows me to change it and demands I log out, Restart x and log in again, took me a day to figure out what was "x" and how to restart it, but no response. Still the same.
In reading the Forums I see this command allot "/sbin/lspci -m" But, too bad, nobody tells exactly where to type that series of digits to get any response,

I am installing CentOS 5.6 on an old PC with a small LCD monitor. Anaconda did not determine that the resolution of the monitor is limited and it configured the display to 1280 x 1024 which is out of range for the monitor. So I connected a different monitor and completed the install then set the resolution to 1024 x 768 which the monitor should accept. I connected the small monitor but it still displays "OUT OF RANGE" when the PC boots.
I then connected to the PC over ssh and changed /etc/inittab to start in runlevel 3 and rebooted the PC. At the moment I am downloading the necessary updates with yum and pondering the problem. Some Internet searching tells me that I can adjust the resolution with Xconfigurator. That beings back old memories of Red Hat 7.x.
However, Xconfigurator is not present on the CentOS 5.6 install. So... short of shutting down the PC I am on now and transferring the monitor back to the old PC and trying another resolution etc. Is there a way to change the resolution without running the gnome gui and using the System; Preferences;Display Resolution tool? I am not running any proprietary video drivers on the PC.

OK, I have Googled to the end of the Earth and am starting to got nuts! I cannot seem to get my onboard graphics to display a resolution greater than 800x600. As mentioned in the title, I am using CentOS 5.2 and the graphics chip is a SIS 661FX. I have checked that the latest driver is installed, changed the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file to include:
[Code]..
Now, if I restart the system, on occasion I have seen the correct resolution (1204x768), but if I check in "system, administration, display", I only see 2 options (800x600 and 600x480). The next time I restart it goes back to 800x600.
I should add that I have tried several options for modeline (present and absent) and modes in the xorg.conf. The automatically-generated xorg.conf file (after installation) has detected the "sis" driver.

I'm setting up a LDAP server to centralize the admin of a bunch of Centos 5.2 servers. I've got the LDAP server set up. I've got my client machines reading their autofs mount tables from LDAP. Now, I'd like to get name resolution working via LDAP.
Here's what I have so far:
1) /etc/nsswitch.conf contains the line "hosts: files dns ldap"
2) /etc/openldap/ldap.conf has URI and NSS_BASE_HOSTS set up to indicate root of "hosts" subtree in LDAP database.
3) "hosts" node in database is an "orginizationalUnit" object.
4) Below "hosts" I have a number of "ipHost" nodes defined with "cn" set to host name and "ipHostNumber" set to host's IP address
This setup doesn't work. Attempting to ping a host by name locks up. If I take the "ldap" keyword off of the "hosts:" entry in the nsswitch.conf file, the ping then returns immediately with "unknown host".
I'm surprised that there isn't better information available online on how to do this. I've found bits and pieces, but nothing concise. how to get name resolution working through LDAP?

I use a VMWare ESX Server and installed CentOS.
Within the CentOS I can only use the Screen Resolution 800x600.
As I have a VMware installed I use the VMware grafic adapter shown in the hardware selection.
Even if I configure the VM graphic adapter within the ESX to use 1600x1200.
Is there any change to configure a higher resolution?

I am having video issue with ubuntu 9.10 and centos 5.4 cannot get resolution higher than 800x600 on Viewsonic vg930m monitor...The first time I installed ubuntu 9.10 worked great, since then no better than 800x600 on both linux distros. Any ideas it is very annoying, like using web browser on a small tablet pc....This monitor works great with opensolaris, though.
Using both distros in virtualbox right now but even if not virtualized install on hard drive I cannot get higher than 800x600...Driving me nuts.

I have Centos 5.5 64 bit (with all updates) installed on a new computer that I built, and everything works perfectly out of the box except for the fact that if I try and change the resolution of the display to the max resolution that I can use (aka native resolution of the monitor at 1920 X 1080) using system-config-display, as soon as I log out and log back it in, it reverts to 1280 X 1024. I am very leery of changing the xorg file because this is an expensive monitor and I do not want to trash it, and I have absolutely no experience setting up these video parameters in linux. I did try switching from the vesa driver to the radeon driver using system-config-display, but Centos forced a reconfigure of everything, bringing it back once again to vesa at 1280 X 1024.
I have no desire to to any gaming in Linux, so 2D resolution at 1920 X 1080 using open source drivers would be fine (Whatever the easiest solution would be). I would consider updating drivers, but I my number one concern in doing so would to keep Centos stable. All I ask for is text that is easier to read when I open a terminal, because I work almost exclusively from the command line. My very old computer which is running Fedora 13 and much older hardware has absolutely brilliant graphics in comparison (Obviously newer drivers, kernel, looks like it does not use an xorg file, etc).
