I upgraded to 5.3 and on the next login I was placed in a basic xwindows desktop. Running /etc/init.d/gdm give me the response "GDM already running. Aborting!" Not sure where to look next.

Among them were: fontconfig, pango, gtk+, cairo, glib. goffice, pixman, tiff, and atk. Afterwards, I got missing fonts with some apps, but the biggest problem is interference with my Vmware Workstation GUIs. Yesterday I removed all the libraries I installed hoping to recover. Now things are better, but when I open a terminal on the desktop it opens jammed in the upper-left corner with the top grab bar out of reach of the mouse. Before I remove the ~/.gnome* directories, how to restore things?
View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter upgrading the distribution from 10.1 to 11.3 I was not able to start the GNome-Desktop. The first error message I received was "maximum number of x display failures reached". I figured out that there was a problem with the ATI Display driver. I guess I fixed this one now, since I do get a Login-Screen.
But after login, I only have a completely empty Desktop (no Icons, no Taskbar, etc.). Also Keyboard-Shortcuts don't work. I tried it with different user-logins, but always the same result. Then I found information regarding gconftool-2 and the recursive -unset switch. Tried this one for /apps/panel and /apps/nautilus. But still no Desktop. Below is some information from .xsession-errors, which I don't know how to resolve.

View 3 Replies View Relatedserious problem here: am running centos 5.4 gnome (updated to the latest updates automatically offered). worked fine till yesterday. now on startup logged in as my normal user, the desktop is empty...!! i get a desktop background, an the bottom and top bars (top with �pplications places, system'an some icons and day and time) no folders/items !! (there were many in it).
opening a terminal and looking in the home directory of the logged in user, the Desktop directory is present, and contents files/folders, so nothing has vanished really.. how do i get back my desktop?? (btw: logged in as root gives an empty desktop too, same as above)

By that I mean, one is displaying a part of the string(a Label) and the other is not displaying the string at all. I will include some relevant information such as the software uses SWT kit. Also the string is displayed perfect in Windows. If it's still not clear I will sum it up in a sentence. I am trying to display a label using SWT kit and, its being displayed correctly on Windows,partially correct on KDE(Half of the string) and not displayed on Gnome.
I have tried GridDat.grabExcessHorizontalSpace=true, but it didn't. how to approach the problem otherwise?
There is a weird thing happening with my FC14 installation. When I log in, I have no icons displayed on the desktop, although I may (and I do) really have them there. One other thing: There is also no "right click" on the desktop.This is solved by opening a folder (which means launching nautilus?), but that's awful and I would like to solve it. ;-)Some information on the system:

I can see the desktop drop down menu when I log in as user root
however I can not see any of the desktop drop down menus if I log in as regular user

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am running CentOS 5.4, which I am occasionally managing via VNC from windows machine. This all occured after one long VNC session although I can't confirm this was the real reason. I also must say that I've seen some posts from people that had the same problem, but not anything helpful. Here is what happens:
Even if I start the machine from scratch I get the following error messages just before the login prompt and type of session window shows:
COULDN'T RECOGNIZE THE IMAGE FILE FORMAT FOR THE FILE '/USR/SHARE/GDM/THEMES/TREEFLOWER/BACKGROUND.PNG
THERE WAS AN ERROR LOADING THE THEME AND THE DEFAULT THEME COULD NOT BE LOADED. ATEMPTING TO START THE STANDARD GREETER.
If I choose GNOME and login I get more errors (for every icon I guess) saying:
COULD NOT LOAD ICON. UNRECOGNIZED FILE FORMAT.
Desktop then loads but there is no background image (other backgrounds don't work either) and the icons are question marks. All the menus and programs work normally.
KDE on the other hand works normally with all visuals, so I assume there must be something wrong with GDE PNG library or something, maybe GDE corruption. If I make another user it's the same story.
After upgrading to i am not seeing any drop down options being displayed in gnome-display-properties
No options are displayed under resolution or refresh rate :-(
Is this because I modified the default boot options

On my home test 5.5 VM, after converting to ext4, moving items to the trashcan in Gnome results in nothing showing in the desktop Trashcan. Looks like a bug in gnome-vfs' support (or lack of it) for ext4, or have I got some other more subtle corruption going on? It's of little importance to me as I'm rarely in the GUI, but it would be nice to see confirmation or otherwise.
View 7 Replies View RelatedAfter seeral attempts to load Ubuntu 10.19,I ourchased anew dis in case downloaded one was faulty.I load the disc in and it starts loading.I then get sveral "gnome"errors displayed.I clck to "not delete"and it then contiinues to loadI get a sreen up to select "language",eventually I get the "forward" which I click.It then appears to start loading.However it is still in this state seven hours later.
I have noticed that prior to start loading the title says "Debian 4.1" is this correct or is this in my PC.Should I be using another disc to wipe this out???? is this the unrecoverable error?

My problem is that icon is not working in menu! I can find my program in Utilities->Time->ETM Manager and this is what I wanted, but there is no icon for the program.

In KDE's Konsole, I can do the following from the terminal:
dcop kwin KWinInterface currentDesktop
And it will tell me which desktop my terminal is connected to ( per [URL])
How can I determine what desktop number the current gnome terminal in a gnome session is connected to?
Older machine here that I upgraded to 10.04 after a clean install of 9.10 some months ago. When booting into GNOME, the desktop image flashes on the screen and the second the bars on top and bottom try to appear the system boots out of the desktop and returns to the log on screen. I assume this is a crash of Xserver, but just guessing. Per another page I ran: lspci | grep VGAand returned:

I know - old machine Typing this from failsafe mode, would be great to hear from someone as to what I can do to get this working in normal mode again.
When i logged into a gnome desktop i got this message: "The GNOME session manager was unable to read file:'/home/(desktop name)/ICEauthority'. If this file exists it must be readable by you for GNOME to work properly. try logging in with failsafe session and removing the file." What commands do i use for that? or do i need to do something else?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm running Fedora 15 with Gnome 3. I installed Gnome-Do using 'yum install gnome-do'. I opened it from the Terminal by typing 'gnome-do' but I keep getting an error message that says
Could not load desktop item: libgnome-desktop-2.so.17
Gnome-Do opens but it doesn't display any application I search for and when I try opening the Gnome-Do preferences, it quits.
I installed gnome-desktop-2.32.0-8.fc16.i686.rpm from here: [url] and then installed Gnome-Do. Everything works fine now.
I have my Unity desktop just how I like it, but sometimes I like to log in to the Gnome (Ubuntu Classic) desktop. However, I was playing around with CCSM while in Gnome and I've totally messed it up, I have the Gnome panels and also the Unity launcher, it's a total mess. Is there a way to reset my Gnome desktop to default without affecting my Unity desktop?
