I have installed the GNOME desktop environment using yum groupinstall 'X Window System' 'GNOME Desktop Environment'and then when i did gave startx command, the desktop environment was not at all clear. As I am new to this, i am not sure how to use it too.

my KDE and gnome desktop don't work ,but root's works. Now when I log in I have just a black screen. From several days ago after liging in and working for hours I had just a black screen that waiting for it to appear normally diden't respond, and I finally had to reset system. What was its main job these days was running longtime fortran programs.I have CentOs 5.2 .

serious problem here: am running centos 5.4 gnome (updated to the latest updates automatically offered). worked fine till yesterday. now on startup logged in as my normal user, the desktop is empty...!! i get a desktop background, an the bottom and top bars (top with pplications places, system'an some icons and day and time) no folders/items !! (there were many in it).
opening a terminal and looking in the home directory of the logged in user, the Desktop directory is present, and contents files/folders, so nothing has vanished really.. how do i get back my desktop?? (btw: logged in as root gives an empty desktop too, same as above)

I am running CentOS 5.4, which I am occasionally managing via VNC from windows machine. This all occured after one long VNC session although I can't confirm this was the real reason. I also must say that I've seen some posts from people that had the same problem, but not anything helpful. Here is what happens:
Even if I start the machine from scratch I get the following error messages just before the login prompt and type of session window shows:
COULDN'T RECOGNIZE THE IMAGE FILE FORMAT FOR THE FILE '/USR/SHARE/GDM/THEMES/TREEFLOWER/BACKGROUND.PNG
THERE WAS AN ERROR LOADING THE THEME AND THE DEFAULT THEME COULD NOT BE LOADED. ATEMPTING TO START THE STANDARD GREETER.
If I choose GNOME and login I get more errors (for every icon I guess) saying:
COULD NOT LOAD ICON. UNRECOGNIZED FILE FORMAT.
Desktop then loads but there is no background image (other backgrounds don't work either) and the icons are question marks. All the menus and programs work normally.
KDE on the other hand works normally with all visuals, so I assume there must be something wrong with GDE PNG library or something, maybe GDE corruption. If I make another user it's the same story.

i find this is an issue which might be tiresome for everyone except for those experts. Esp. for the computers which are dual booting(both windows xp and centos installed in the same computer), that when we are in CentOS we need to switch onto windows immediately. and vice versa. i see this is possible only by shutting down the centos/windows and then restarting onto the other OS.
Can anyone tell me the the solution to work simultaneously both xp and centos without the need of shutting down and restarting There maybe or may not be the solution...but i find the pleasure to know if there is for example, remote desktop connection in windows xp, is there any solution, we can work on windows via centos or vice versa ( in the same machine),

How to install absolutely minimal Gnome without gnome-games, any cdrecord, dvd rw-tools, dialup modem tools, gnome-screensaver, festival etc. on Centos 5.5? If I try to remove these software separately then Gnome is gone.

I am trying to install CentOS 5.2 on an HP rp5700 desktop unit. These units were originally sold as a Point of Sales unit I believe, but HP also markets it as a high life cycle server for SMB market.I tried to load CentOS on this unit via CD (created from downloaded ISO of course). It presents the initial CentOS banner page and waits for the obligatory "enter" to continue. It begins the boot process up to discovering the PCI stuff and just locks up, no response. I have to power down to restart.Since this does not even get to the point of installing. I am at a loss what to do next. Has anyone had a similar issue with other PCs.The boot stops at the lineACPI: PCI Root Bridge [PCI0] (0000:00)

My Dell poweredge server running CentOS 5.4 and booting kernel-2.6.18-164.15.1.el5. All boot processes seem okay and the graphical screens for CentOS operate, but just before the desktop loads the screen goes blank and the arrow/cursor is being circled by small spheres. This remains indefinitely. While the arrow is being circled, here are the results of 'getinfo.sh device'
Quote:==================== BEGIN uname -rmi ====================
2.6.18-164.15.1.el5 i686 i386

I'm currently in the last steps of migrating a CentOS mailserver to the x64 version. However, under the old 32 bit version, I was using XRDP to access the Centos box from my Windows boxes. However I can't seem to find the XRDP package in the standard repos so this is prompting me to look at possible alternatives (XRDP was incompatible with my windows 7 box anyway soI had to RDP to another server of ours running 2003 to RDP into the mailserver which was far from ideal).Basically, I'd like to be able to seamlessly access the Centos box with a standard RDP client.
I know VNC Server/Clients would be an option but RDP gives me the freedom of any windows box being able to access the server on the same adress/port without installing software on any windows box I encounter. Are there any viable alternatives to XRDP ?There's no "add-on" to VNC server that could enable it to accept RDP connections ?

On my home test 5.5 VM, after converting to ext4, moving items to the trashcan in Gnome results in nothing showing in the desktop Trashcan. Looks like a bug in gnome-vfs' support (or lack of it) for ext4, or have I got some other more subtle corruption going on? It's of little importance to me as I'm rarely in the GUI, but it would be nice to see confirmation or otherwise.

Against all advice in Centos docs, I built and installed several gnome packages in order to upgrade to the latest Gnumeric. Among them were: fontconfig, pango, gtk+, cairo, glib. goffice, pixman, tiff, and atk. Afterwards, I got missing fonts with some apps, but the biggest problem is interference with my Vmware Workstation GUIs. Yesterday I removed all the libraries I installed hoping to recover. Now things are better, but when I open a terminal on the desktop it opens jammed in the upper-left corner with the top grab bar out of reach of the mouse. Before I remove the ~/.gnome* directories, how to restore things?

Problems with xen 3.1.2 creating and installing domU CentOS 5.5 I am trying to do a virt-install --prompt --paravirt, and the install error out while trying to download install RPMs. I have googled for xen centos virt-install and various permutations. I have found similar howtos for 5.4 and 5.3, but they resulted in the same outcome. I did find several posts with similar issues, but no solution was posted.[URL]..

during installation I uncheck Gnome and check Kde for desktop environment.
my regret is that i'm never like Kde coz it's too complicated.
so when I try to reinstall Centos again, it prompt an error saying the packages already installed.
Is there a way to change to Gnome desktop environment?
I use Package Manager and check Gnome and uncheck Kde but to date I'm still not able to change to Gnome.

I'm experiencing weird issues with Gnome themes. Basically, when I use gnome-theme-manager and I choose a theme it... does not work. Nothing happens, nothing changes. Everything is working for pre-installed themes.
I thought there might be something with the theme I tried to install so I downloaded and tried over 50 themes. None of them works correctly.
On my second PC, I got Debian installed and everything is working correctly there, every single theme works.

I am trying to run X windows on CentOS with GNOME. When I first enter startx i get the message:
Fatal server error: Server is already active for display 0 If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock and start again.
Then I removed the .X0-lock file ran startx again and I got this message:
_XSERVTransSocketINETCreateListener: ...SocketCreateListener() failed _XSERVTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners: server already running Fatal server error: Cannot establish any listening sockets - Make sure an X server isn't already running
Finally, I ran startx -- :1 and then it flashed a black screen with the X mouse cursor but a second later it just went right back to the desktop.
